The Closing Chapter By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
When you look back over the course of your life, there are often certain places that seem to stand out as the setting for your most treasured memories. For me, that place was always my grandparents’ house. From holiday gatherings to backyard barbecues, childhood sleepovers to Yankee baseball game viewing; countless events were centered on that old beloved split level. My grandparents had moved there in 1960, one of the first of their family to have had the opportunity to “move eastward” to the country-like expanses of Long Island from the cozy
confines of Long Island City. With them came my then eight year-old mother and my four year-old uncle, followed a number of years later by my aunt; and thus the perfect “starter” home became the setting for the decades of memories which followed, not only for them but for the next generation as well – myself included. Little did they know that the nearly vacant block they moved onto would grow into the close-nit community it is today, filled with neighbors and friends, and even a few family members, on the surrounding streets. Fifty-six years later, the house that became a home
to us all is no longer “in the family,” passed on to another young couple, moving from the city, looking to begin their lives in the suburbs in much the same way that my grandparents had all those years ago. Sure, it was only a house; but it served as so much more to all those who had the pleasure of stepping foot across its threshold. And so, with the end of 2016 comes the closing of yet another chapter for my family. Life goes on, to be sure; but some things leave a sizable imprint so that life – as it was known, and lived – is never quite the same. Farewell to #580… Thanks for the memories.

Toiletry Drive Students throughout James Wilson Young Middle School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District recently put in extra care and effort to help ensure that individuals in need would be able to enjoy a safe and happy holiday this year. Eighth-grade class club officers, with assistance from the seventh-grade class club officers, were
able to collect enough toys for the Toys for Tots initiative to fill four large cardboard boxes to the brim. According to their website, the mission of the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program is to collect new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distribute those toys as holiday gifts to less fortunate children
in the community in which the campaign is conducted. Additionally, members of the National Junior Honor Society hosted a collection drive in order to provide less fortunate individuals with necessary toiletries. The students were able to collect almost 1,000 separate items, all of which were donated to the Patchogue Neighbors Inn.

Utilizing Skills In an effort to help students build multilingual skills, fifth-graders at both Academy Street and Blue Point elementary schools were recently visited by Bayport-Blue Point High School juniors in the college level Spanish class and seniors from the Advanced Placement Spanish program for a
“Cultural Breakfast and Book Exchange,” an initiative sponsored by the SEED program. Throughout the course of the event, the fifth-graders were given the opportunity to showcase the books they made in their Spanish classes, and explain to the upperclassmen fun facts about themselves using
the Spanish language. Additionally, a large feast was prepared for the students, and they were asked to place their order for such items as empanadas and mango nectar while using their newly adopted language skills.

Districtwide Accomplishments The December 13th Connetquot Central School District Board of Education Business/Audit Committee meeting was full of recognitions and celebrations, celebrating multiple students from throughout the district for their varied accomplishments. The night began with the recognition of Connetquot High School’s girls varsity volleyball team, who recently traveled upstate to Glens Falls, to compete in their second consecutive New York State Championship Finals. Although the team fell short of this year’s
top state honors, their successes are bountiful as they remain threetime Suffolk County Champions, two-time Long Island Champions, 2015 New York State Champions and 2016 New York State Finalists. During the meeting, both the district and Sen. Tom Croci and Legislator Tom Cilmi recognized the team members and their coaches for their sportsmanship and athleticism. The varsity girls swim team members were also congratulated for earning personal best times this year, and were collectively
honored for being ranked second in their league and second in the county. Additionally, they were praised for attaining the title of Suffolk County Champions in 200m freestyle relay; a title they have held for the last seven years. The girls varsity gymnastics team was also honored for their undefeated 2016 fall season record, for being ranked first in League II, and having advanced to compete in the Suffolk County finals. This year marked a special one for the team, as it included a male addition, Liam
Summers, who is the first boy ever to be on a Section XI girls gymnastics team. The girls varsity cross-country team was celebrated for tying for second place in the league and for many team members attaining personal records. According to coach Mike Austin, he calculated that this team would have been 30 to 40 points over any other team in Connetquot history and noted that team member Kelly Iocca was the number one runner in the league and set six school records this year. Cathy Mongiello’s fifth-
grade class at Cherokee Elementary School was highlighted for recently winning the Sumdog’s Eastern Suffolk Math Contest. Student Brandon Ziegler came in first place, scoring a total of 985 out of 1,000 points, and in doing so the class won a free subscription to Sumdog’s Math Games. The contest paced students with a limited time, and tested both their accuracy and speed. In keeping with the theme of mathematics, Amanda Perrone, a ninth-grade student at Connetquot High School, was named Long
Island Young Scholar of Mathematics by the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY College at Old Westbury. As such, she has been accepted by the Institute to pursue mathematics and mathematical science applications. To qualify for this honor, Amanda competed in one of three program divisions against approximately 600 of the top-ranking students nominated from school districts all over Long Island.

Connetquot High School’s Student Government recently hosted its annual Holiday Character Breakfast to provide community residents with a fun and safe holiday environment to celebrate the festive season. More than 50 high school
students volunteered to take part in this year’s event and each volunteer was dressed as a well-known character from children’s stories. The admission fee entitled the children and their families to enjoy breakfast in the cafeteria, alongside the opportunity to meet with some of

Character Breakfast their favorite characters, including Santa Claus. “This event is such a success because of the outstanding student volunteers and teachers who love to work with the children of the community,” said Jen Piscitelli, co-advisor to the CHS Student Government.

smiles to their faces, and make the holiday season brighter and more joyful, brings our members great joy and happiness as well,” said CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr. “Teachers exemplify thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity throughout the school year inside and outside of the school house, but doing so around this time of year brings warmth to all of our hearts.” The Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex, which is operated by the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC), provides a safe environment for youngsters while their families are involved in court proceedings. For more than a decade, the Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books,
healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters visiting the center. The Center is open five days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and has serviced over 1,000 youngsters last year. Connetquot teachers have also provided hats, scarves and gloves for the children that visit the center. When children leave the center with their parent, they leave with a new book, and warm clothes. According to CTA member Carolyn Paul, “This was an amazing experience. So many donations by Connetquot teachers, and the association, make me realize that we really do work in the best school district on Long Island!”
STUDENT OF THE MONTH - On December 19th, Councilman Kevin LaValle visited Sachem High School East to honor December Student of the Month Elias Zaoutis. In addition to being a strong student academically, Elias is captain of the varsity soccer team, a member of the business honor society, and is involved in numerous extracurricular activities outside of school. Next fall, Elias is off to college to pursue a degree in finance.

Working with Cohalan Children’s Center supervisor Jacqueline Dwyer and program aide Kathleen Meade, the CTA “adopted” two local families and dropped off toys, games, books, clothes and gift cards for those needy families. Exploring the Origins of New Year’s Resolutions
For millenia, people around the world have commemorated the arrival of a new calendar year by adhering to various traditions. Once such tradition is making resolutions for the year ahead. Resolutions are widely practiced, but some people may not understand the origins of New Year’s resolutions and why they have become the norm. Some historians tie the practice
of making resolutions to the ancient Babylonians. More than 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians celebrated the New Year in March rather than January. The spring harvest was in March, and a festival called Akitu, which lasted 12 days, was celebrated. An important part of the festival was the crowning of a new king. Special rituals also affirmed a connection to the gods. The Babylonians made promises to the gods, which included vows to return borrowed objects and pay outstanding debts.
Resolutions can also be traced to ancient Rome. The Romans were instrumental in creating a more formal calendar, and the start of the new year was moved from March to January (January and February were added to the Roman calendar under the rule of Numa Pompilius). Julius Caesar wanted to honor January’s namesake, Janus, the Roman god of beginnings. Janus’ two faces enabled him to look back into the past and forward into the future. Sacrifices to Janus were made, and worshipers exchanged gifts
with one another. A custom of setting resolutions began during this period as well, with Romans promising to be good to one another. Eventually, these resolutions were funneled into prayers and fasting when Christianity was adopted by the Roman Empire. Other religious parallels include the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, which is a day of atonement and reflection as celebrants examine their wrongdoings and seek forgiveness and to behave better moving forward. Yom
Kippur follows Rosh Hashanah, Judaism’s own new year. Resolutions also may be loosely tied to Medieval times. During this time, knights took a “peacock vow” at the end of the Christmas season. Each year, these knights would reaffirm their commitment to chivalry. Today New Year’s resolutions are largely a secular tradition, but they’re still connected to a desire to be a good person and put one’s best self forward.
