Joan Perrini, New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Retiree Service Consultant reported on concerns the organization has for upcoming New York State legislation, and potential changes to the pension system. Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) insurance Ombundsman Pat Troniar was on hand to answer questions from the members. Current Connetquot Teachers Association President Tony Felicio, Jr., also addressed the retirees, and answered questions related to contracts and retirement. CRTA President Peter Leis, and the members of the CRTA Executive Committee wish its members, and their families, a Happy Holiday, and Best Wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2018.

Musical Makerspace Inspiring ingenuity hit a high note as Lynwood Elementary School fifthgrade students in the Sachem Central School District constructed musical instruments in their makerspace room out of everyday household items. Students in Tara Trimboli’s fifth-grade class turned ordinary items into musical instruments as they collaborated to build various types of sound-making inventions.

They incorporated everyday items found around a home such as paper towel rolls, paper plates, shoeboxes, rubber bands, corn kernels and balloons. Each student was challenged to construct a functional sound-making instrument using only the items provided. Throughout the activity, students were encouraged to revisit designs to make improvements as they continued through the construction process.

Members of the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) attended the annual Holiday luncheon at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore on an appropriately snowy December 14th! This business meeting and fund-raising get-together puts the retirees in the spirit of the holidays, and helps raise funding for the association’s May, 2018, Scholarship luncheon. The CRTA grants several $500 scholarships to the children, or grandchildren, of retired Connetquot teachers, at it’s scholarship luncheon. Close to 75 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news and enjoy a tasty lunch! CRTA President Peter Leis said that the organization meets “ … three times per year, at which time we can share updates on legal, medical, financial matters, and trips that are arranged for our members.” CRTA Secretary, Pat Duda, distributed a directory of

In December of 2016 Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Antony Felicio, Jr., made a donation on behalf of the CTA to the BideAwee Pet Adoption Center after arranging to visit teachers at Connetquot High School. There was so much support for BideAwee and the little friends they brought along, that this year three adorable black lab puppies visited Oakdale-Bohemia and Ronkonkoma Middle Schools on December 15th. CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., presented a check in the amount of $200 to “…this wonderful rescue group located

in Westhampton, Long Island.” Felicio continued “… our teachers had a chance to visit with the puppies during some free time, to play and share their love with them.” Everyone present agreed that interacting with these beautiful puppies releases stress, and puts a smile on everyone’s face. The CTA would like to thank Beth Albert, Terry Mennona and Lauralee Flynn for helping organize this year’s BideAwee visit. After visiting the high school in 2016, and the middle schools in 2017, the plan is to have this wonderful rescue organization visit Connetquot’s elementary

schools in 2018! Members of the CTA agree that it is a pleasure supporting such a wonderful organization that does so much for abandoned, and abused, pets, and the families that adopt them. Distracted Driving Demo

The Suffolk County Police Department recently visited Bellport Academic Center to discuss impaired and districted driving with students and to demonstrate how difficult it is to operate a vehicle while either under the influence or multitasking. Bellport Academic Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special education

services to students. The police had student volunteers wear impairment goggles, which simulate the effects of being intoxicated or distracted, while attempting to drive a pedalpowered kart through a small course lined with cones. This exercise proved to participants and viewers how difficult it is to perform simple tasks accurately

after consuming alcohol or trying to drive while focusing on other activities, such as texting. Everyone at the presentation quickly realized it was impossible for the drivers to successfully navigate the course. The police discussed the far-reaching consequences of getting arrested for driving while impaired or districted, including the expense and an arrest record that can prevent them from securing employment. “It’s very powerful to hear this information from someone who wears a uniform,” said Sue Goltz, school principal. “This presentation definitely resonated with our students and we hope the impression they made will help them to make the right choices when they get behind the wheel of a car.”

District Language Program

Sunrise Drive may have been the first Sayville elementary school in the District to participate in the weekly language arts program being introduced this year, but don’t worry, parents. Each of the three elementary schools will be experiencing one trimester of this new offering to learn Spanish. While the program offering is currently for Third grade students, Fourth and Fifth grade students are able to participate in the BeforeSchool Enrichment Club. “The World Languages Department is excited to partner with the elementary schools this year,” announced Stephanie Bricker, the Department chairperson, “in offering–L.A.C.E.S. (Language and Culture at the Elementary Schools). Señora Kristin Chirichella, a member of the World Languages Department at the high school, is the instructor for this fun and innovative program.” Learning the Spanish language along with the traditions and practices from Spanish-speaking countries was the goal of this program. “We started each class off with a daily ‘Today Song’ that incorporated the day, date, weather, and positive

affirmations!” Señora Chirichella was happy to report, “The students enjoyed the singing and dancing and the cultural crafts that included making Spanish-speaking country flags, a mask for el Día de los Muertos, and their very own Guatemalan worry doll. In addition they had great fun using microphones to ‘interview’ each other on each new topic, while our class mascot ‘Nacho,’ a singing, dancing Mexican Chihuahua toy, proved a favorite for holding practice conversations. The students especially looked forward to the body and mind movement exercise “Máximo” as they learned the Spanish equivalent for identifying their heads, eyes, ears, hands, arms, elbows, knees, and toes.” The trimester flew by. Parents and teachers alike have told Señora how much they absolutely loved the program: “My son William Guillermo - is in the LACES program,” Mrs. Mitchell enthused, “and I just wanted to tell you how much he enjoys it! He can’t wait to share all the new information that he learns each week with us!” “My daughter has really enjoyed the program and

eagerly shares her weekly new learning with us!” Mrs. McGinnis agreed while Mrs. Robayo added, “Alec said you all had a blast! You’re the best!” “Thank you so much for a wonderful experience!” Mr. Frank shared. “The kids really loved starting off their Mondays with you and learning all about español. I know they will miss it.” Señora Chirichella said, “It was a wonderful experience having the children come in not knowing much Spanish and at the end of the program have them speaking it all the time. I enjoyed hearing them tell me each week how they used their Spanish and how they shared it with their families. It was amazing to see them be able to communicate with each other on so many topics. I believe that which students learn in a fun, exciting way, they won’t soon forget! This has truly been my pleasure to teach!” Now that the students at Sunrise have successfully completed their trimester, the verdict is in - “¡Lo pasaron de maravilla!” And ¡Hola! to the Cherry and Lincoln Avenue elementary students!

Connetquot High School Life Skills students recently lent their creative talents to design colorful and festive decorations for a fun-filled Holiday Craft Fair. Working with teacher Danielle Orobello, the students spent weeks putting together colorful holiday signs, tree ornaments and door decorations, which they offered for sale at school for all to enjoy. “An important part of the Life Skills program is teaching students the abilities they need to be successful in the workforce, as they get hands-on experience in the community working once a week with local businesses,” said Ms. Orobello. “Today’s first Holiday Craft Fair at Connetquot High School was a huge success, and we are all so proud to be a part of this outstanding experience!”

Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Of course, all the theorizing in the world can only accomplish so much. A life on paper is not a life at all; the words must take shape in our actions and follow through in order to make any discernible difference. And, in that, we create our very own snowflake, a composite of our unique qualities and circumstances, our passions and personalities. No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.

The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has flipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. Within designated workstations, the students explored what components of the habitat provided worms with the most desirable living environment. The students were highly engaged as they discovered multiple factors which would impact the worms’ environment, such as their reactions

to different intensities of light, the types of soils and substrates most beneficial to their living situation, and how they responded in dry or moist conditions. At the end of the experimentation period, the students gathered around in a circle and shared their findings amongst one another, explaining the factors they found to be most beneficial and harmful to the worms’ environmental factors.

During the month of December, students across the Sachem Central School District participated in a collection of computer science activities in honor of the worldwide Hour of Code initiative. For younger students, the Hour of Code initiative acts as an introductory experience to the world of computer science, covering programming as well as an exploration of how coding technologies are present in everyday life. For older students, the district’s continued participation in Hour of Code provides them with an opportunity

to expand their prior coding knowledge as they explore more challenging areas of the discipline. Elementary students throughout the district learned about algorithms and how they act as a list of steps to complete a task. Utilizing Code.org, students engaged in interactive games that included creating their own lists of instructions to move a character through a computer-generated maze. At Wenonah Elementary School, fourth- and fifthgrade students chose to forgo recess and help kindergarten students as they embarked on

their first coding experiences. Around other schools within the district, students participated in multiple “unplugged” coding activities, taking coding away from computers and integrating hands-on activities challenging students in other areas of coding. Ozobots were incorporated into code lessons as students controlled the tiny robots through colorcoded commands written on paper. As student grade level increased, so did the level of difficulty in the coding challenges they faced using the Ozobots. Middle and high school students took on more advanced coding activities as they navigated through drag-and-drop coding tasks before breaking up into teams to compete in robot races using mBots. Students also programmed the robots to move throughout different mazes. mBots are an all-inone educational robot that allows students to experiment in programming, electronics and robotics.
