Rice Krispies are a classic breakfast cereal and chicken is always a dinner favorite. Blend the two and you’ve got a fun and delicious dinner recipe that the whole family will love!
What You Will Need:
Rochelle first learned about this recipe when her children were growing up and she was looking for new ways to engage the whole family in dinner. “A good friend of mine told me about a cereal chicken recipe that was passed down through her family, and she assured me that my kids would love it. She was right! We’ve been making it ever since, and now my daughter makes it for her own family.”

New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact
entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because
I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!
The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost! When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.”

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

Athletes Helping Athletes Members of the Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club recently stopped by Edith L. Slocum Elementary School to engage the fifth-graders in a variety of leadership and team-building activities. During their visit, the high school students told the younger students of their personal accounts as they moved to the upper grade levels, which included more demanding schedules and the option to consider new clubs and athletic teams. Each of the visitors talked about how they learned to believe in themselves and continued
to work to reach their goals. Additionally, they took time to explain the many advantages of participating in extracurricular programs such as music, band and cheering, as well as sports. “Athletes Helping Athletes members visited the fifth-grade classrooms to share their experiences of overcoming obstacles, working hard and persevering through adversity,” said Philip Clark, Connetquot High School guidance counselor and AHA adviser. “This is the first of several visits that AHA will make to the fifth-grade classes at
each of the Connetquot elementary schools to promote confidence, leadership and value-based messages.” The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes Club has a large participation rate, with more than 60 serviceminded student members who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and to share their experiences with elementary school students. For almost thirty years, the Centereach Civic Association has celebrated their community with a Christmas tree and Menorah lighting. This year’s event took place on Wednesday, December 5th at 2100 Middle Country Road, across from the Suffolk Diner. Over the years this event has evolved and grown steadily! For about the last 8 years, various choral groups from Dawnwood Middle School and Centereach High School have performed at the event. The groups take turn singing Christmas Carols, Hanukkah songs and some miscellaneous songs chosen simply as a crowd pleaser. The attendance this year at this community event was record breaking! There
was an estimated 270 to 300 people enjoying the festivities. As the almost 50 foot tree was lit, a fire truck came around the bend with flashing lights and Santa aboard, who then went around to greet everyone! At the microphone throughout the night was Diane Caudullo, the Centereach Civic President. She encouraged everyone to take the time and look around, say hello to one another and realize that “by mere location we have become neighbors, but by choice we have become friends.” Although everyone certainly enjoyed the complimentary hot cocoa and fresh baked cookies served by Gerard and Lynn Donohue of JeJoJo Bagels and ate donuts
provided by Hilda Gonzales of White Castle, the true takeaway was good old fashioned holiday cheer, a sense of community and an unofficial start to what can be a wonderful but stressful time of year! This Civic Organization believes this is one event that truly brings the community together and they look forward to many more years of hosting it. As the night wrapped up, the younger kids were invited to take the microphone and sing their favorite Christmas Carols. Diane’s final words were to wish all “a healthy, happy, safe and enjoyable holiday season.” She reminded all that “although nights are now darker, traffic is heavier and the pressure is on, we are all in this together.”
Mathematics Honor Society Thirty-six Connetquot High School students were recently inducted into the Mu Alpha Theta chapter of the National Mathematics Honor Society on December 5th. Adviser Christopher Dolce introduced the officers of this prestigious group, along with Connetquot School District Director of Mathematics Louise Burger. Mrs. Burger welcomed the newly inducted members, as well as the proud family members and friends who attended the ceremony. The induction
ceremony was held in the appropriately-decorated high school cafeteria, and began with MAT officers addressing the history of the national organization, its purpose, as well as the history of mathematics. According to Mr. Dolce, membership in the Mu Alpha Theta chapter is quite selective for the more than 2,100 chapters across the United States and several foreign countries. During the ceremony, Mr. Dolce asked the newest members stand up and take the honor society pledge before distributing
the commemorative certificates to each of them. “I am beyond proud of our students and their achievements in mathematics,” said Mr. Dolce. “I would like to thank our entire team of math teachers, our director, Mrs. Burger, and the board of education for their support as we honor our outstanding mathematics students.” Following the ceremony, light refreshments were available for the members and their proud family members and friends.

Holiday-Themed Tech Project In celebration of the holiday season, firstgraders from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School collaborated with James Wilson Young Middle School students in the James Wilson Young Middle School’s technology room for a festive woodworking project. To begin the project, the middle school students
used their measuring skills to line up the height of their first-grade partners next to a large slab of wood. With the proper safety gear and precautions equipped, the students then received assistance from technology instructors Robert Donarummo and Iain Zambri as they cut the wood in the marked location based on the
students’ height. The students then worked together to apply a thin layer of white paint to all surfaces of the wood. With their completed wood planks on hand, the first-grade students are going to build a large snowman which will be displayed in the lobby of Sylvan Avenue Elementary School later on this month.

The district would like to congratulate Edward J. Bosti Elementary School fifth-grade student Natalie Strekowski for being named a national winner of Storyworks Magazine’s
Titanic Contest. Utilizing her creative writing talents, Natalie wrote a detailed paragraph describing her resemblance to her greatgrandmother, following a set of guidelines from the magazine which asked her to incorporate two nouns that mean “a copy,” one verb that means “to copy,” and on idiom that means “an exact copy.” The students’ writings from both Kim Patterson’s and Joanna Zalewski’s classes were then submitted to the national contest, a
program sponsored by Scholastic designed to support students love for reading and writing. Natalie’s entry was so extraordinary and full of detail that she was declared one of five winners throughout the nation, and was rewarded with a token of appreciation and an official “Storyworks” journal to continue her writing journey.
A Christmas Carol in London Without having to leave the comfort of their classrooms, seventh-grade English students from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently traveled to London to celebrate the magic of “A Christmas Carol” with assistance from technology integration specialist Victoria Pappas. Prior to reading the acclaimed play in class, the students were afforded the
opportunity to experience a virtual tour through Google which included important maps, locations, images, videos and hyperlinks. Amongst the locations visited was the house of Mr. Dickens, which included interactive photographs and bits of information pertaining to his life. The students guided the Google-based “Pegman”

character, renamed “Scrooge” for the activity, across various locations in order to deepen their understanding of the play’s setting before enjoying it for themselves. During their two-day tour of London, the young explorers were also asked to complete a digital scavenger hunt with questions pertaining to their many travels.

Foundation For Healthy Habits Drugs curriculum, the trained student educators empower sixth-grade students with the skills to make healthy decisions that lead to a substance free life. “It is important for younger students to have positive role models,” said Elizabeth Reimer, president of the Teens as Teachers Club. “This course teaches students how to navigate middle and high school by making healthy decisions, managing emotions and setting positive goals to achieve.” The peer educators who participate in the program
will travel to each Sachem middle school as part of a four-workshop series educating sixth-grade students on these healthy strategies. “The sixth-graders are not the only ones who benefit from this program,” said Chairperson for Secondary Health Education Lori Hewlett. “The peer educators build valuable leadership skills, improve communication skills, build confidence and contribute to the success of fellow students. Our program has expanded by acting as a model which other school districts seek to emulate.”
