Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism and science advocacy organization, announced today that it has awarded more than $250,000 to 54 local organizations through its 2013 Chapter Grants program which was open to all 11 Autism Speaks Chapters (Carolinas, Chicagoland, Long Island, National Capital Area, New England, New Jersey, Ohio, Southern California, South Florida, St. Louis, and Western Pennsylvania). stressing out over their decision ever since. As I am writing this, mile marker zero is less than eighteen and a half hours away. Next week, you will be hearing if I made it in or not. It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

mind that this school is right for me. If only the admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. The first line of that letter will read either “congratulations” or “unfortunately.” Preferably, it will be the former, but everything happens for a reason. I will be content wherever I end up attending, even though I will never be able to shake that possible feeling of rejection. Stay tuned...

BRINGING CHEER TO PEDIATRICS - LI Ducks’ QuackerJack, along with Manager Kevin Baez, B103 personalities, the Wiseman and Frank and owners of PC Richard Appliances visited the Pediatric Department of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip to celebrate the holiday season. They went room to room distributing toys, donated by the Richard family and collected through a toy drive at the ballpark. Among those visited was LI Ducks’ fan, 9 year-old Emma. QuackerJack and his friends put a huge smile on the little girl’s face.

Four professional hockey players from the New York Islanders played Santa on December 18th and scored big points with hospitalized children at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36), defensemen Aaron Ness (#55) and Radek Martinek (#4) along with goalie Kevin Poulin (#60), delivered toys, other gifts, and good cheer to the patients and their families. During the previous week, the Islanders took a break from the ice to go on a shopping spree to choose gifts ranging from board

games to Barbie dolls to bring to Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. About 70 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The foursome walked through the entire inpatient pediatric unit and the pediatric unit at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. They were able to spend some time with the kids and signed autographs, took pictures and gave away those famous blue and orange team teeshirts. The Islanders even gave out ticket vouchers to some of the families, good for any date their children were out of the hospital and well-enough to attend

a game. The visit was organized by the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s and the New York Islanders. Through the Child Life Program at Stony Brook Children’s, professionals provide therapeutic, educational, and recreational activities to meet the unique emotional and developmental needs of hospitalized children. Activities include medical play therapy, games, arts and crafts, as well as specialized programs such as animal assisted therapy, music therapy, and birthday and holiday parties.

The Islip Animal Shelter’s 2nd Annual Holiday Toy Drive brought in double the amount of donations over last year’s event. Families across Long Island dropped by on Saturday to place treats and toys in the 90+ holiday stockings that hang on each animal’s cage. This year’s event was sponsored by Live.Love.Bark Dog Rescue Inc., the shelter’s new non-profit 501c3 volunteer organization. The volunteers of Live. Love.Bark and the shelter employees worked together to raise more

than 200 gallons of toys for both dogs and cats. “When our residents come together to donate to our animals, especially during the holiday season, it is truly heart warming,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Everyone deserves to be happy for the holidays and that includes all of our animals waiting for their forever homes.” Along with toys and treats, more than 300 pounds of dry food and 20 gallons of canned food, an abundance of Milkbone boxes, and roughly 10

gallons of collars and leashes were also donated. Also collected were bottles of laundry detergent, dish soap, towels, sheets, blankets and food bowls. Live.Love.Bark also raised a monetary donation of $354.00, which will be used to purchase items from the shelter’s Amazon Wish List that were not yet donated. The school’s student council coordinated a pajama and book drive for the Bay Area Head Start Program. Teaming up with the Pajama Program, which provides new pajamas

and books to children in need, the school was able to assist the 136 children at the facility. During the two-week drive, the student council collected approximately 180 pairs of pajamas, more than 150 books and an $80 donation from teacher’s aides, assistants and other faculty members to supplement the clothing donation. It was the group’s hope that the donation, when paired

with the age-appropriate book donations, would help to provide a warm and welcoming nighttime routine for these families. Additionally, the school’s National Honor Society coordinated a “Thanks for Giving” hygiene drive for the homeless. The school collected close to 300 products, which were donated to the Department of Social Services before the holiday break.

as well as interactive ‘experiments’ to explain the power of nicotine, the effects of tobacco smoking on the body, and encourage students not to be tempted to start smoking. One of Ms. Bohman’s experiments had students take a drinking straw, pinch their noses, and breathe through that straw. This, she told students, is what people with emphysema struggle with every day. At least one member of the audience knew of a relative who struggled with the disease, which was a result of decades of smoking. Mrs. Toscano, Mrs. McNally and these Idle Hour 5th graders listened

intently to the lessons offered by Ms. Bohman, which seemed to reinforce their determination to avoid smoking altogether. YFS Coordinator, Mrs. Lara McNally said that “The goal of these workshops was to help the 5th grade students have a better understanding of the dangers of tobacco, and learn that the best way to keep your body happy and healthy is to never put harmful drugs into your body.” Mrs. Bancroft’s 5th graders thanked Ms. Bohman for visiting, and sharing such important information with them.

Anti-Smoking Campaign Ms. Linda Bohman, of the Suffolk County Department of Health, visited with students and staff of the Idle Hour Elementary School in Oakdale on Thursday, October 24th. As part of the Connetquot School District’s annual United We Stand for a Drug Free, and Anti-Bully, Community, Ms. Bohman came to talk to students about the dangers of smoking, and was welcomed by Idle Hour Principal Mrs. Denise Toscano, and Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator Mrs. Lara McNally. Ms. Bohman used a multi-media presentation,

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting a series of six open houses for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs over the next several months. Parents should bring their child if he/she will be a new camper in order to allow them to get a sense of the camp and what they will experience throughout the summer. Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

Mailing Holiday Cheer James Wilson Young Middle School students and staff members helped grant holiday wishes for many Long Islanders in need this winter when they collected hundreds of new toys during a schoolwide collection drive.

The community service project, which was coordinated by the National Junior Honor Society and the eighth-grade class council, ran for a week and a half. Students and staff members generously donated throughout the

drive, as well as during the seventh- and eighth-grade dance and sixth-grade movie night. The hundreds of toys collected were donated to Toys for Tots and the MakeA-Wish Foundation just before the holiday break.

Woodhull Elementary School students on the Primary and Intermediate teams recently presented their culminating activity for the Where We Are In Time and Place unit of study. During this interdisciplinary inquiry, students examined the discoveries, explorations and migrations of humankind. They focused on the relationships and interconnectedness of individuals and civilizations from both a local and global perspective. As a complement to

their study, students in first and second grade organized their learning in stations. They created visual representations of the lessons learned in the classroom in the form of murals, dioramas, interactive white board activities and even a game of Twister. The Intermediate Team, comprised of grades five and six, used a newscast format and “broadcast” from Channel 5626 to document their newfound knowledge. The videos included live performances as well as interviews,

a travelogue, breaking news and even a cooking segment. The sharing of their learning experiences helped to increase the students’ awareness of and sensitivity to the experiences of others beyond the local community. These types of hands-on projects also reinforce the district’s commitment to developing the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside.

Fifth-grade Peer Leaders at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District helped to make the holiday season a cheerful one by crafting more than 30 handmade cards for a

local nursing home during their monthly meeting. Tapping into their creativity, the students drew an assortment of holiday scenes and penned messages of warm wishes in hopes that the

recipients would enjoy a brighter holiday season. The package of cards was delivered by club adviser Nicole Greco just before the holiday break.

REENACTING THANKSGIVING - More than 30 kindergarten students from Connetquot Central School District Edith L. Slocum Elementary recently reenacted the first Thanksgiving feast. The group of students performed their rendition of the event in front of family and school staff members. The students dressed as pilgrims and Native Americans, told stories of the voyage across the ocean to the “new land,” the pilgrims’ encounter with Native Americans and how it all led to the first Thanksgiving feast.

INSPIRING STUDENTS - Hundreds of students from Connetquot Central School District Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently received a visit from former Philadelphia Eagles football player Vince Papale. The former football player inspired the middle school students with his story of overcoming obstacles and bullies to accomplish his goal and made them promise to stand up against bullying. The middle school students pledged to overcome all obstacles when pursuing their dreams.

CELEBRITY SIGHTING - Nine students from Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School recently attended a country music concert at MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma and had the opportunity to meet famous country singer Rodney Atkins. The group of high school students participate in a community based work experience program at the MacArthur Airport every Tuesday during the school year. The concert was a reward for their hard work and dedication.

EARNING A DOCTORATE - Connetquot Central School District Ronkonkoma Middle School Assistant Principal Mr. Joseph Licato recently took the time to congratulate Dr. Frank Saladino for earning his Doctoral degree. Saladino earned a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from Five Towns College in Dix Hills. Dr. Saladino is a veteran music teacher, having inspired his music students at Ronkonkoma Middle School since 2001.

Learning From An Expert

Lincoln Avenue elementary students in students in Mr. Joseph Dragotta fifth-grade class will be benefiting from ongoing visits by Sayville Ninth-grader Ryan Rafferty. “Ryan Rafferty, a former student of mine,” Mr. Dragotta said, “came

to Lincoln to help my students by discussing how to be prepared for the Middle School, etc. His first visit was the ‘kick off’ for a team-teaching program I will be doing with Ryan monthly.” While Ryan will share his perspective about programs and opportunities as a

recent student at the Middle School, as the son of Middle School Reading Teacher Sue Rafferty, his insights on the whole Middle School experience will be balanced. “And he’s the right guy for the job!” concurred Mr. Dragotta.

NEW INDUCTEES - More than 100 students from Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) were recently inducted into the National Foreign Language Honor Society. The new inductees were addressed by CHS alumni who discussed the opportunities that come with mastering a foreign language. The students inducted into the honor society have displayed top proficiency in foreign languages such as French, Spanish and Italian.

Mrs. Donna Barclay recently welcomed U.S. Army, active duty, Sgt. Roldan to her students, and Cherokee Street Elementary School Principal Mrs. Bridgette Wilson. Mrs. Barclay explained that Sgt. Roldan and his wife are neighbors and how much her community respects, and appreciates, what our active duty soldiers, and veterans, do for us. On November 7th Roldan spoke to the Cherokee students about his 19-year career, his love for this country, and his dedication to continuing

to defend America and its citizens. He just returned from a tour of duty at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but has been deployed to West Point, Germany, Puerto Rico, as well as completing four tours of duty in Iraq. Sgt. Roldan thanked Mrs. Barclay for the invitation to speak with her students, as well as the thoughtful letters the children had been sending him while serving overseas. Mrs. Barclay promised Sgt. Roldan that her students would continue to write to other veterans as well, to remind them about

how they appreciate their sacrifices, and that they are not forgotten. Mrs. Barclay also explained how she and many other members of her community work to support our troops overseas, and how Cherokee students are eager to do the same. Mrs. Wilson was pleased with the thoughtful questions, and respect, that the students had for their visitor, as she too thanked Sgt. Roldan and his wife for spending time with Cherokee Street Elementary School students.

Mr. Joseph Licato, Assistant Principal of Connetquot’s Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) joined with faculty, students and guests, on November 8th to honor America’s veterans. Twenty-one veterans, along with their proud families, attended the annual breakfast and celebration. Among the veterans were members of the American Legion Post 155 (Ronkonkoma, NY), led by Commander Paul Attard. These honored veterans had the opportunity to mingle with old friends and spend time with their proud children and grandchildren. These veterans ranged in service, and age, from the

Cuban Missile Crisis, to Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr. Licato talked to the veterans about the pride he shares with members of the community, in honoring their service and sacrifice. Veterans from every branch of the service were called upon to stand as the RMS Jazz Band played the official themes for each service. Mrs. White’s ‘Soul Singers’ entertained the vets and their families with patriotic themes. Afterwards the veterans paired up and were assigned to classrooms where students respectfully asked questions of these citizen-soldiers. As the students asked their questions about the branch

of service, time they spent in the military and where they may have served, it was apparent that the veterans’ memories, and emotions, were still vivid. Each veteran spoke proudly of his military service, recalling experiences and friends they would always remember. Students, and teachers, were very impressed by this living history shared by these community veterans. Mr. Licato called upon the entire Ronkonkoma community to remember the sacrifices made on our behalf, by our veterans, and those that currently serve in dangerous places around the world.

Out of the 207 pieces on exhibit, BayportBlue Point High School seniors Madison Duignan, Elizabeth Galian and Kerri Nickel captured three of the 13 awards at the 26th Annual Nita Elder Student Scholarship Art Exhibit sponsored by the South Bay Art Association. The

annual contest features artwork by rising high school artists, which are judged in several award categories. Each student enters three individual pieces of artwork into the contest for the chance to receive several scholarships. Elizabeth was presented

with the Women Sharing Art $250 award, Kerri won the Emily Czaja $500 memorial award, and Madison won the Rob Price and Mike Maas $100 award. This year’s exhibit featured work from 11 high schools.

Mr. Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Boehmia, along with Youth and Family Services Coordinator Mr. Edward Kubik, recently announced the donation of canned goods to a local food bank. Kubik explained that in conjunction with the Connetquot School

District’s annual ‘United We Stand for a Drug, and Bully, Free Community’ week, students were asked to bring in canned food. As part of the school’s ‘Spirit Day,’ the students and staff acknowledged the importance of Peace & Dignity in their community. Food donations were collected for neighbors who need

a helping hand. The food items will be delivered to a local food bank that serves the Bohemia community.
