Cirque Du Jour Celebration

onnetquot Central School District Cherokee Street Elementary School recently hosted its annual Cirque du Jour, where 5th grade students worked for two weeks in Physical Education classes to learn special ‘circus’ skills to entertain their friends, teachers and families. Students performed as clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers and more. The circus program is designed to motivate students to participate more fully in physical education.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very ﬁrst holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reﬂect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma

bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family

Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Battle For The Beach Leonardo Figueredo won Suffolk County Community College’s Chopped-like culinary competition Battle for the Beach with a delectable baked airline chicken breast with natural au jus and butternut squash risotto seasoned with cream and fresh thyme. Student contestants were presented with a mystery basket of ingredients

- a whole chicken and butternut squash - that they had to turn into a mouth-watering dish. The competition is similar to the popular reality television show “Chopped” airing on the Food Network. The judges - five of Suffolk’s faculty chefs and Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun McKay - evaluated

each student’s creation on creativity, presentation and taste. Huntington’s Victoria Shannon placed second with her roasted breast of chicken paired with roasted cauliflower, garlic mashed potatoes and butternut squash. Candice Weiss of Bayport placed third with baked chicken, roasted maple glazed butternut squash and asparagus

Tapping Into Programming Celebrating computer science week, BayportBlue Point School District’s fourth-graders and James Wilson Young Middle School students learned basic computer programming skills as they participated in this year’s nationally recognized Hour of Code. Working with their

enrichment teacher, the elementary students completed various webbased assignments as they experienced computer science for one hour. They learned basic commands to create interactive games and had the opportunity to continue to learn about the subject from home by accessing their free, online

Reading Detectives Ms. Oquendo and Ms. Dow are advisors to the Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Reading Detective Club. Ms. Dow explained that the purpose of the club is to “support conversation and the idea of sharing among students reading the same book. Through working on mini mystery cases, students explore

the wonders of the reading process and, at the same time, strengthen their reading skills and strategies.” Ms. Dow explained to Duffield Principal Mrs. Lisa Farrell that the students put their reading detective skills to work while reading and discussing a mystery novel together. Making Holidays Comfortable Bayport-Blue Point High School student council coordinated a donation drive to help make the holiday season a warm and cozy one for families in need this December. During the annual pajama and book drive, the school collected more than 165 pairs of children’s sleepwear and favorite

nighttime stories for the HELP Suffolk in Bellport. This establishment is a tier II homeless sheltered that provides temporary housing for 76 homeless families. Members of the student council had the opportunity to help deliver the donations just before the holiday season and meet with several families

benefiting from the organization’s services. This year’s drive was once again organized through the pajama program, whose mission is to provide new pajamas and books to children in need, may of whom are in shelters like HELP Suffolk.

to continue their work with Operation Wounded Warrior. Students asked questions that are relevant to their young lives, and future. Zachary White asked the panelists what their greatest challenge was during deployment. While the answers varied, one common theme was missing home, family, and the comfort of the lives they left behind. Another common theme was that while their real families were thousands of miles away, their brothers and sisters in arms became just as much a family. Each of the panelists agreed that the bonds developed on the battlefield remain just as strong many years after their return home. Ryan Lopienski asked Mr. Donohue how the use of the Arts help veterans re-integrate back to civilian life. Donohue talked about the difficulty many veterans feel when they return home, and how writing, and poetry, seem to give those veterans an outlet to express their deepest feelings, and anxieties. Each of the veterans talked about their love of country, and dedication to

the American way of life. They each believe that their military experiences allowed them to grow as individuals, and taught them the skills to believe in themselves, and provided the tools for future success. Dr. Richard Shear, interim Principal of Connetquot High School, thanked the veterans for sharing their experiences, and passion for defending the American way of life. Connetquot Board of Education President Ms. Lee Kennedy, VP Leo R. Marinick and Superintendent Lynda G. Adams were in attendance, and also praised the veterans for their service. The Optimum Community - Meet The Leaders program provides students the opportunity to listen, and ask questions, of local, successful, leaders and role models. These programs are taped, and broadcast by Cablevision. Many students, and teachers, remained in the auditorium long after the program concluded, to thank the veterans, and learn even more about these local heroes.

ROCK PAPER SCISSORS DONATE - Connetquot Central School District Cherokee Street Elementary School Student Council hosted its first Rock, Paper, Scissors night where students came together to play the popular hand game and donate over 200 new, unwrapped toys to less fortunate children in the community through the Toys for Tots holiday program. Former Connetquot student and current member of the United States Marine Corps, Nicholas Musto attended the event to personally thank the children and their parents.

Academy Speller Advances

Words spanning centuries and derived for different origins were the focal point of this year’s school spelling bee at Academy Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. The event, which ran

seven individual and two championship rounds, challenged the top spellers from each fourth and fifthgrade class to showcase their talents and vie for the title of top speller. This year’s winner was fourthgrade student Keara

Schneck, who captured victory with the word hydroponic. She will now compete at the Long Island Regional Spelling Bee at Hofstra University. This year’s runner up was fifth-grader Katherine LaFountain.

LETTERS TO SANTA - Connetquot Central School District Cherokee Street Elementary School students in grades K-5 recently wrote letters to Santa Claus about the magic of the holiday season to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The letters were delivered to the local Macy’s store, and the company donated $2 per letter to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, totaling over $700 raised by the 5-10 year old students. This event was designed to teach the students about the importance of giving back to the community, especially during the holiday season.

In recognition of Veterans Day, Optimum Community brought a special Meet the Leaders panel of military veterans to Connetquot High School on November 7th. Among the invited veterans was keynote speaker, Islip Town Supervisor, New York State Senator-elect, and Connetquot graduate (’90), Tom Croci. Croci holds the rank of Commander, in the U.S. Navy, and recently returned from his latest tour of duty in Afghanistan. The hour-long program included questions from a number of Connetquot students, for the panel of 4 veterans. These leaders and role models discussed the importance of Veterans Day, public service and leadership. Besides Croci, the Veteran’s panel included Ms. Joan Furey, who volunteered as a nurse to serve in Vietnam; Kevin Duffy, a Connetquot teacher that served as a Paratrooper (1992-1997) in the 82nd Airborne Division and Patrick Donohue, who served in the U.S. Army, and continues as an Army Reservist. On December 17th, Marc Rosenzweig of Willow Pet Hotel presented a check from their second annual fundraiser, which raised $1,883 for the purchase of canine bulletproof vests for the local K9 units. Additionally, after seeing the story on NEWS 12, Ballistics Expert for the NYPD, Sal LaCova of Survival Armor, donated an additional vest for the cause to be presented at the event. Willow Pet Hotel’s 2nd Annual Pet Awareness Festival was a great success in raising funding for canine bullet proof

vests. MTA K9 officers James Chirillo (K9Danny), James Finn (K9-Glenn- named after the late Glenn Pettit), Alan Fong (K9-George), Al Kirsch (K9-Sentry) and Robert Savage (K9Cannan) donated their time by demonstrating how they work with their canines and explaining the importance of bulletproof vests. Since most municipalities lack the funding to provide canine vests, the event was important in creating awareness, as well as raising funds for the purchase of vests.

On Friday, December 12th, the members of Community Ambulance Company and Bohemia Fire Department helped spread the joy of the holiday season to children at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital following a multiple-vehicle accident in Bohemia. Thirteen children from a Commack Youth Group were traveling to Sayville High School for a holiday party where they were going to have dinner and receive presents from Santa Clause. While en route to the party, the van was involved in a multiple-vehicle accident on Lakeland Avenue. Community Ambulance received the alarm at 5:06 p.m., and responded with four ambulances and multiple first responders. After realizing the amount of potential patients, a bus was also requested from Bohemia Fire Department. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries, however, it was determined that the entire van of children needed to be seen at the hospital. Utilizing a triage system, all of the children were given tags with their information, and moved from the inoperable van to the Bohemia Fire Department bus for transport to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. In total, seventeen patients were transported from the accident to local hospitals. Since the children were going to the hospital, they were unable to make it to their scheduled dinner at

the Sayville High School, which was an event they had been looking forward to for quite some time. It is at this time that the members of Community Ambulance, as well as Bohemia Fire Department, went above and beyond the call of duty to truly demonstrate the motto of “neighbors helping neighbors.” The Chiefs of the two departments reached out to Sayville High School and

made arrangements to pick up the presents intended for the children and bring them to the hospital. This way the children would not miss out completely on their night. In addition, Santa Clause himself decided he wanted to hand deliver the presents to the children, so he boarded a Bohemia fire engine covered in holiday lights and rode

to Brookhaven Hospital. Members of both departments came out to show support, and even employees of the hospital joined in the event. Once the two departments arrived at Brookhaven Hospital with the gifts, the children were about to be discharged. Workers from their group gathered them all together and told them there was a surprise waiting for them outside the emergency room. As they walked out together and realized Santa Claus was waiting for them, smiles came over their faces as they ran towards the ambulance. Each child climbed aboard the ambulance, sat with Santa Claus, and received a present before leaving the hospital. Community Ambulance Company, along with Bohemia Fire Department, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Sayville High School, managed to turn this negative situation completely around for the children. What would have been a terrible memory of a car accident and a missed party turned into a fun celebration they will not soon forget. This was all because of the dedicated volunteers of these two great departments, who gave up their Friday night in order to bring some holiday cheer to the children involved in the auto accident.

At one point during the fundraiser, the spotlight was on officer James Finn. Officer Finn was interviewed by News 12 Long Island due to his decision to name his dog, K9 Glenn, in honor of NYPD Officer Glenn Pettit, who was tragically killed on September 11th, 2001. With that in mind, Willow Pet Hotel decided to donate these bulletproof vests in honor of Officer

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) announces the 2015 season for the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) will kick off on January 3rd, 2015, starting at 10:30 a.m. More than 40 Long Island teams will meet at Room 100 in the Jacob Javits Center at Stony Brook University to learn about the game for the coming year. Along with over 2,000 teams nationally, local teams will receive this year’s game rules via NASA satellite transmission from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire. They will then pick up their kits of parts to begin the 42-day period of designing and building their robots. As one of over 40 regional events, the SBPLI Long Island Regional FRC will take place March 26th-28th, 2015 at Hofstra University. Some teams participating in the local event will move on to compete at the 2015 Championship event at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on April 23rd-25th, 2015. Working with engineering mentors, they will apply concepts of math and science learned in the classroom. Students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition. Ultimately, many students are inspired to pursue further education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received more than $2 million in scholarships. This year, students participating in FIRST will have access to over 600 scholarships worth over $20 million. In addition, SBPLI will be holding a special informational session for the students’ parents in which they will learn about the organization, its mission and the importance of the robotics programs. “The FIRST Robotics Competition is not just about the design and building of sophisticated robots. These students also develop maturity, professionalism, and teamwork skills that enrich their lives,” said Deb Winter,
