In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. This initiative will allow the public to directly purchase Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards for homeless families in five counties outside of New York City. As part of the kick-off for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Start-funded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card, which he has purchased as a gift. CHI has also secured housing for this family of five all Long Island natives - which includes three school-age children, age five, 17 and 19, who have all been without a home for 14 months due to job loss and rent increases. “As we are all thinking about and preparing for the holidays, there are many families who are in search of a permanent home,”

provider of housing for the homeless in suburban New York, has connected with Bed Bath & Beyond to encourage individuals, families and businesses alike to purchase gift cards through the Bed Bath & Beyond special toll-free number; 844-52-I-CARE. One hundred percent of this anonymous, taxdeductible donation will be given to a family or individual currently living in a local shelter in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Dutchess and Orange Counties to purchase household items from the retailer. Donors will receive an acknowledgment of their contribution for tax purposes. “No family should have to spend the holidays in a homeless shelter, yet thousands of low-income New York individuals and families find themselves in that situation,” says Alexander Roberts, Executive Director of CHI. “Our goal is to provide a $100 gift card to each family when they find permanent housing, but the public may donate whatever amount they like, starting at as little as $5.” CHI provides housing for one thousand homeless people, including more than 200 families in Suffolk County - primarily single mothers and children each night in shelters and emergency apartments. While social workers and housing specialists do their best, families face the bleak prospect of spending the joyous holiday season alone with strangers. Finding an affordable, permanent home takes an average of four months. Since most people are in emergency housing due to eviction or foreclosure, they often have very little to their names. While counties provide the bare essentials - beds, a dining table, a couch - the gift cards will allow the families to buy linens, blankets, pillows and housewares that turn a house or apartment into a home.

Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we

can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In

the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. he Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently presented $65,333 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. This donation will enhance the hospital’s anesthesia services by supporting the acquisition

of an Apollo® Anesthesia Machine, an advanced system with ventilation technology to support patients of any age. This gift brought the Guilds’ 2015 donations to a total of more than $211,000 for various

programs, including surgical intensive care and emergency services. Made up of volunteers from surrounding communities, the Guilds have raised more than $10 million for the hospital since 1958.

For educators, creating a climate of constructive collaboration can go a long way at addressing diversity. As part of a Cultural Exchange program to bridge diversity on Long Island, forty Leadership Club students at Sayville High School welcomed forty Amityville students who were invited to spend a portion of their school day participating in classroom lessons and school-related activities at Sayville High School. After the Sayville Leadership Club greeted members of The Warrior Awareness Club (aka as the WAC PAC) at the main entrance, everyone enjoyed a breakfast reception, followed by successful “ice-

breaker” activities. Once the Sayville and Amityville students paired up, the Sayville students took their counterparts to classes. Later, they all reconvened for a large Thanksgivingstyle feast prepared by the Leadership Club organizers that commingled students from different geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic perspectives and allowed them to unwind and share stories and experiences. Both the WAC PAC and Leadership Club members expressed positive feedback about their day and look forward to the club’s visit to Amityville in Spring. The success of last year’s exchange and this year’s visit have encouraged

Leadership Club advisors Jennifer Wittman-Cahill and Angela O’Hoppe along with The Warrior Awareness Club advisor Jason McGowan to continue on their mission of closing the cultural gaps and all it has to offer in the future between the two districts!

It had looked like Santa’s Workshop, but it was the Sayville High School cafeteria. The sound of paper unrolling from their cardboard cores, the snipping of scissors, the snap of adhesive tape, and the chatting voices of the students had mingled to create an dynamic atmosphere of merry purpose and preparation - wrapping presents for the 535 children who, along with 125 adults, would be attending the Every Child’s Dream Dinner event later in the week. Many outside community organizations and groups have donated time, materials, and talents to make the Every Child’s Dream an extraordinary experience for the underprivileged, but for the past four years the venue has taken place at Sayville High School. And every year the High School community puts heart and soul into their efforts that contribute to the success of the whole. The Student Government, under the leadership of advisers Katherine Van Dorn and LynnAnn Perlin, had been coordinating the clubs, toy donations, and coat drives, to prepare for this festive event. Again this year, the Art students, working with Art Teacher Jennifer Berotti, had painted beautiful holiday scenes on the

Academy Street Elementary School students are working to cultivate kindness as part of a new schoolwide character education program. The premise of the initiative was introduced this December when inspirational speaker and founder of the ReesSpecht Life Foundation Richard Specht visited the building. During two assembly programs, Mr. Specht spoke with the students about a superpower each of them have – the ability to

cultivate kindness through even the smallest acts. In addition to sharing his original book “A Little Rees Specht Cultivates Kindness,” Mr. Specht wove in a unique explanation on how the ability to change the world is something that all can achieve, provided they have the right perspective. At the end of the program, the students were challenged to go out and make the world a better place and received Seeds of Kindness cards to help keep the kindness movement going.

Each class received a copy of Mr. Specht’s book and in the coming weeks the school will be creating a kindness tree to celebrate the acts of kindness witnessed through the school. The introduction of the program was based on a recommendation of the building’s school improvement team (SIT) as a way to continue to enhance not only the school’s but community’s positivity.

Thanksgiving Feast Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School kindergartners, teachers and staff recently celebrated the Thanksgiving holiday with a tasty feast. Students dressed in creative colorful Pilgrim and Native American costumes while they enjoyed a holiday

meal together in the school’s atrium. Kindergarten teachers Nadya Kauter, Lorei Rodrigues, Danielle Willie and English as a Second Language teacher Chris Allen helped the children create their costumes and developed the menu for the Thanksgiving dinner.

Perpetuating Kindness

Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Principal Mr. Stuart Pollak congratulated the staff for organizing such a fun Thanksgiving setting and wished all the students, their parents, teachers and staff a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

With the support of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Library System, Fire Island students were treated to an up-close demonstration of a 3D printer. Technology integration specialist Deborah Gerkin met with students and

described the workings of the MakerBot Fifth Generation Replicator, which uses hot liquefied polymer to build 3D objects by “printing” in layers. Ms. Gerkin also demonstrated the computer aided design (CAD) software, which

effectively gives the printer its instructions. With the system set up in the school library, classes watched the machine build small plastic objects in a matter of minutes.

Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School Student Council Advisors Mrs. Kenna and Mr. Cavanagh recently helped more than 15 students, 7-8 years-old, write letters to Santa for Macy’s National Believe Day. Students wrote their letters in class and parents

were asked to donate one envelope and stamp to be used for the project. Members of the student council then stuffed the envelopes. Macy’s will donate $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each letter submitted by December 11th, 2015. Make-AWish grants the wishes of

children diagnosed with life-threatening medical conditions. Cherokee Street Elementary School students have already submitted over 150 letters. Students wrote letters to Santa Claus to practice writing and raise money for charity.

Overcoming Adversity More than 300 Connetquot Central School District Ronkonkoma Middle School students recently learned how to overcome adversity by listening to Dr. Frank Saladino, a veteran music instructor in the District, talk about how he overcame the challenges of his early life. Dr. Saladino discussed how he was raised by his young mother, left a widow

with two children and no formal education after a fateful car accident. He spoke passionately about his family’s daily struggle to survive, his mother’s addiction to drugs and his stepfather’s abuse. Despite these obstacles, Dr. Saladino told the students he knew he had a choice; instead of choosing to use drugs or alcohol to ‘escape’ from his difficult life he chose to improve

his education in writing, music and poetry. When he eventually attended college he realized he was the master of his own destiny, which has helped him be a better son, brother, father and husband. The students were deeply moved and inspired by Dr. Saladino’s story to recognize the choices in their own lives to overcome adversity. Toy Drive a Success The Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center recently hosted its Fourth Annual Holiday Pet Toy Drive, sponsored by the shelter’s volunteer group, Live.Love.Bark, which was successful in collecting more than 700 gallons of toys for dogs and cats. This year’s donations again surpassed the amount collected in previous years. Families across Long Island and even out of state made the trip to donate at the Shelter’s annual fundraiser which was held on Saturday, December 12th, to place treats and toys in the 100+ holiday stockings that hung on each animal’s cage. In addition to toys and treats, nearly 1000 pounds of pet food, an abundance of dog bone boxes, and an impressive amount

of laundry detergent, dish soap, hand sanitizer, towels, blankets, beds and sheets were also donated this holiday season. Various supporters and local companies also co-sponsored the event while others donated items or baskets to raffle at Toy Drive. Live.Love. Bark sold merchandise including both human and pet clothing and 2016 calendars that brought in more than $2000.00, which will be used towards the well-being and care of the 100+ adoptable animals that currently reside at the shelter. The Annual Holiday Toy Drive was started in 2012, with the donation of holiday stockings for each animal at the shelter. Now sponsored by Live. Love.Bark, the event has

tripled in size, collecting much more than just toy donations. In its first year, the Toy Drive saw approximately 50 people visit the shelter to support the effort, whereas this year, over 300 supporters walked the halls, stuffing the stockings and visiting with the animals. PROCLAMATION PRESENTED - Assemblyman Al Graf recently presented St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holbrook with a proclamation honoring its 150th anniversary. The building is one of the oldest in the community, and while it has gone through many name changes, served many different congregations and been through several renovations, the building has always been a place of worship.

The Islip Town Board recently honored the Bayport-Blue Point Salvation Army at the December 15th Town Board Meeting for their outstanding efforts this holiday season. The Bayport-Blue Point Salvation Army has shown outstanding dedication in ensuring that those who

are in need this holiday season are provided with the essentials that all individuals should have. Recently, the Town of Islip teamed up with this organization to do an “Angel Tree,” where employees went out and bought presents for those who may not otherwise receive one. Thanks to

the leadership of the Salvation Army, the Town of Islip was able to collect dozens of presents for numerous members of our community. T he Bayport-Blue Point Salvation Army has made it easier for our community members to have a brighter holiday.

V-Ball Champs Honored

The Islip Town Board recently held a special ceremony to honor the coaches and athletes from Connetquot High School’s Girls Volleyball Team. The team made history in 2015 by becoming Connetquot’s first girls volleyball team to win

the State Championship. The championship win came on the heels of their undefeated regular season and their victories at the Suffolk County Championship, as well as the Long Island Championship, which was also a first in the team’s

history. Off the court, these athletes and their coaches raised an outstanding $3,400 for breast cancer research through an organization known as the Sideout Foundation.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s fifth-grade Peer Leaders organized and implemented a holidaythemed fundraiser for a cause this winter. The students created colorful “Snowman

Popcorn” sleeves for individual bags of microwave popcorn and volunteered to sell the tasty treat during the school’s parent/teacher conferences. The suggested donation for each bag was $1 and, as a result of

the generosity of those in attendance, the Peer Leaders collected $126. The group will be finalizing which local charity the money will benefit during their January meeting.

SPECIAL DELIVERY - The Nassau County Emergency Ambulance Bureau Paramedics Association joined with Santa Claus to visit the pediatric patients at the Nassau University Medical Center and bring them a gift for the holidays recently.
