Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of more than 335 NYSHFA/ NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit

artwork. Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care

facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’ calendar provides a forum for these talented and interesting individuals to shine.” The 2017 “Art from the Heart” calendar can be purchased for $12 by visiting www.thefqc. org and www.nyshfa.org. The websites also include images from the “Art from the Heart” calendar. Proceeds from the calendar benefit the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. a non-profit, grantsupported organization that focuses on improving the quality of care and quality of life in New York State nursing homes.

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Now in its fifth year, the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island Half Hollow Hills Invitational has become a staple of the local FIRST Robotics Competition season. The event, which this year was held on Saturday, November 19 at Half Hollow Hills High School West in Dix Hills, New York, with support from School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), is a way for teams to face off using the previous season’s robots one final time before launching into the next build season. This year’s event featured 24 teams, which competed using the robots they built for the 2016 Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, held in March, the challenge for

The December 6th Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education meeting was full of recognitions, highlighting the efforts of both the high school’s girls varsity volleyball team and district’s PTA members. The Class B Long Island Championship volleyball team members ANGEL TREE EFFORTS - Islip Town employees recently participated in the were celebrated for their teamwork Salvation Army’s Annual “Angel Tree” program, where local children in need are given outstanding the gifts they’ve asked for in the tradition of the holidays. This year, 65 children were ‘adopted’ by Islip employees, and hundreds of gifts, including seven full-size bicycles, a toddler’s trike and dozens of toys, games and clothing items, were purchased and carefully wrapped by employees. In recent years, it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and has even being brought to Mexico. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope Francis, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities’ seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Friday, December 2nd. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, a Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help also attended the service. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed. In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns when it was also shared at St Joseph’s RC Church (Ronkonkoma) on Sunday, December 4th, at their Lessons and Carols, at St Thomas More RC Church (Hauppauge) at their Tree Lighting ceremonies on Saturday, December 10th (following their 5pm Celebration of the Holy Mass), as well as in East Northport at Cub Scout Pack 5’s monthly Pack Night on December 9th. For Alex Urmaza, there was nothing more humbling and “spine-tingling.” Alex had a very exciting opportunity to perform in the New York Pops’ Veterans Day Concert for Courage - a grand tribute concert to our armed forces - on November 11th at Carnegie Hall. The Sayville sophomore had been invited to Carnegie Hall to play in the cello section with the full New York Pops Orchestra and the members of The Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band. The only student selected for the performance, Alex was more than honored to be on stage with this prestigious orchestra and hear the patriotic songs sung by those soldiers who serve our country. Playing at Carnegie was partly happenstance for Alex. Local businessman Chris Quartuccio, owner of Blue Island Oyster Company and family friend, had been aware of an opportunity for a student musician to perform with the New York Pops on Veterans Day, and knowing of Alex’s music experience, inquired if Alex would be interested. Alex replied, “Of course!” As Alex’s mother Christine Urmaza explained, “Chris recommended Alex’s name for this performance opportunity and gave me the name of the New York Pops coordinator to whom to send Alex’s music resume.” Although opportunity came a-knocking, it was mainly Alex’s reputation for his outstanding musical talent that actually opened the door. Among the music accolades he submitted to the New York Pops coordinator for consideration, Alex included this year’s LISFA Studio Grant, a scholarship awarded

Then Alex waited for their response. “I received an email in September saying that Alex would be getting the music to perform on Veterans Day,” said Christine Urmaza. “This opportunity was not

The conductor took him aside after the concert and congratulated him on his good work.” Having earned his seat for the Veterans Day concert, Alex was introduced as a featured guest by New York Pops conductor Steven Reineke on stage, took his seat with the cello section in the full orchestra, and performed Richard Rodger’s classic theme for a World War II TV series called Victory at Sea. Alex admitted to feeling nervous about going on stage before a large audience for his first performance at Carnegie Hall, but he said Steven Reineke was a kind and collaborative conductor who made it all seem great fun; also the members of the orchestra sitting around him made him feel comfortable. “The sweet thing that happened as he left his seat after his performance with them,” Christine Urmaza added, “was the cellists nearest him tapped him with their bows as he walked by them.” “Playing alongside these amazing musicians and meeting them back stage to talk with them gave me a sense of what it would be like to a professional cellist,” said Alex of his unique experience. “I could not have asked for a better way a formal competition. I think they based the invitation to experience my first performance at Carnegie Hall on his music resume. This media attention would propel Birdie’s last song to the top of the charts, Albert will be able to get out of the show biz rat race for a more respectable job as an English teacher, and then, as Rosie hoped, she and Albert could get married at last. It seems a sure thing. What could go wrong? How about: Albert’s meddling mother, Mae Peterson, who opposes Albert and Rose marrying and runs interference with the likes of tap dancer Gloria Rasputin; Kim MacAfee’s overprotective father whose life has been turned upside down by hordes of crazed teenage girls serenading the rock star staying in his home;

- Kim’s jealous boyfriend, Hugo Peabody, who is spurred on to punch Birdie on national television by a spurned Rosie. Showcasing the enormous singing and dancing talents both of the lead players, as well as the ensemble students, were such entertaining musical numbers as: An English Teacher, The Telephone Hour, Put on a Happy Face, How Lovely To Be a Woman, A Healthy Normal American Boy, One Boy, Honestly Sincere, Hymn for a Sunday Evening: Ed Sullivan, One Last Kiss, Spanish Rose, Rosie, What Did I Ever See in Him, A Lot of Living to Do, and Kids. It was hard to pick a favorite. Kudos To The Players: Suave-voiced Hunter Caiazzo charismatically personified the teen idol Birdie with such rousing performances in Honestly Sincere, One Last Kiss, and Lots of Living To Do. Aidan DeVerna carried the lead role of Albert with

gusto and charm in Put On A Happy Face and Rosie. Triple-threat Caterina Harris delivered a clever Rosie, singing An English Teacher, What Did I Ever See in Him, dancing (Spanish Rose, Rosie), and demonstrating exceptional grace under fire especially when targeted by Mae Peterson’s constant zingers. Instantly endearing as Kim MacAfee, Gianna Romano showcased her exquisite voice especially in How Lovely To Be A Woman, One Boy andHymn for a Sunday Evening: Ed Sullivan. Victoria Earvolino was hysterically magnificent as the smothering martyr Mae Peterson. Evan Powers delivered comic bluster as the enormously frustrated Mr. MacAfee and fantastic harmony in the Hymn For a Sunday Evening. Nora O’Donnell as Mrs.MacFee not only harmonized the discord between Kim and MacAfee but also provided a lovely

balance in the four-part Ed Sullivan song. Dylan Schneider was a stand-out Randolph MacAfee with quick comic asides, but especially distinguished his singing talents in the Ed Sullivan song and the musical reprisal of Kids. Olivia Reiss exhibited great voice and highpitched enthusiasm in her role as excitable fangirl Ursula. With superb singing, smooth dancing, comedic portrayals of clashing cultures between grownups and kids, and a team of screaming teens chasing celebrity/heartthrob Conrad Birdie, there was hardly a dull moment on stage. The story opens with the upsetting news that rock-and-roll idol Conrad Birdie has been drafted. The star’s struggling songwriter Albert Peterson is in a panic. Birdie was his last chance for fame and fortune. Now with his star vehicle going into the army, Albert will have to close his company. But thanks to his resourceful assistant and long-suffering girlfriend Rose Alvarez, all is not lost. Rosie devises a way to turn misfortune into opportunity with a clever publicity stunt: Get Conrad on the Ed Sullivan show;

Honoring Local Veterans

Following the success of last year’s Greenlight A Vet Project, in which green light bulbs lit the front porches of West Sayville homes and Sayville stores, the Cherry Avenue school community (West Sayville) and Greenlight organizers Mrs. Geraldine Batterberry and Mrs. Nicole Teufel decided to go one better. In addition to reminding all Sayville town to light up the green bulbs like they did last year to honor vets, the Sayville School district elementary school hosted a Thanksgiving Celebration for our local vets. “We decided to put a Thanksgiving twist in the mix this year because Cherry Avenue is so THANKFUL for those who

serve,” said Kindergarten Teacher Mrs. Batterberry, whose father is a Vietnam Veteran. “Children in our school were asked to invite a vet to our breakfast. If a child had a vet come to the Thanksgiving brunch, they were invited to stay and eat with their Veteran. We had over fifty local veterans show up.” Mrs. Teufel, whose husband is a twenty-year veteran, prepared her Second-grade class for the special Thanksgiving brunch celebration. Joining Mrs. Batterberry’s kindergarten class, the students sang, recited poetry and handed each vet a paper airplane with a message inside. (The teachers admitted they

were inspired by the heartwarming Paperand-Packaging television commercial in which a little boy throws paper airplane letters to his serviceman father over his neighbor’s fence, and the good neighbor secretly collects them and sends them to his dad. Later, the boy receives his father’s replies via paper airplanes from the neighbor’s yard.) Just like in the commercial, the veterans and the students were greatly touched by this opportunity to share, and thanks to the generosity of the Cherry Avenue PTA, this Thanksgiving brunch for Veterans was indeed a memorable meal.

The 3rd annual Pajama Program Drive convened a “pajama party” of approximately twenty-five Sayville students to the Sayville Congregational Church for a special purpose - to prepare gifts of pajamas and books for those less fortunate. Working once again in conjunction with www. pajamaprogram.org and thanks to the generosity of the UPS of Sayville that donated boxes and tape, the students volunteered their time to sort pajamas by gender, age, and size, pack, and then decorate boxes for the 117 donated pairs of pajamas and 73 books they had collected this year. This concerted effort not only will bring a little extra comfort in time for the holiday season to homeless children it also rewarded

the mix of Sayville High School and Middle School student volunteers who experienced the wondrous spirit of good will. “Our donations this year will be going to HELP SUFFOLK,” explained Lisa Murtha, mother of Brock the Sayville High School Freshman who launched this drive when he was a Seventh-grader three years ago and who continues to organize it still. “HELP Suffolk is a 76unit transitional housing facility for homeless families.*” “We have so much fun getting together to decorate the boxes and sort the pajamas by size and pack them,” explained Seventh-grader Macklin Murtha, Brock’s brother. “We listen to Christmas music and have food. Not

only is it fun for us, it’s meaningful because we are giving to kids who don’t have much.” “I love doing this every year,” Freshman Joe Vanderborgh said. “It’s become a tradition for the holiday. We are so lucky and it feels great to do something for kids and families who are down on their luck.” Fellow Freshman Kevin Golka agreed. “This is my third year doing this, and I hope we continue it for many years. It’s something that kids can do for kids, and it just feels right.” Lisa Murtha added with pride and enthusiasm that watching the students be so engaged and committed to this very “feel good” project was ‘truly amazing.”

Bosti Elementary School recently gave a preview performance of their winter concert material to students, faculty and special guests from The Arbors Assisted Living at Bohemia. Steaming trays of everyone’s favorites: bacon, eggs, omelets, French toast, home fries, along with bagels, fresh fruit with yogurt, juice, coffee, and all the trimmings were provided by Parkville Deli and served by volunteer Senior Class parents. This year’s Class of 2017 entertainment added a new feature, “Faculty Superlatives” that gave

lighthearted recognition to select staff members. After the traditional slide show, the breakfast ended with the “Class Superlatives.” Each student named received a cap with the Superlatives description written on it. Originally launched by Senior Class Adviser Mrs. Marie JoostCox and former High School Principal Joseph Buderman, the annual Senior Breakfast remains a tradition and a privilege enjoyed by generations of Sayville students.

Hour of Code Elementary school students throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently explored the basics of the ever-growing industry of computer coding by participating in the internationally recognized program, Hour of Code. At Sycamore Elementary, with the help of school math specialist Susan McInerney, students

of all grade levels were able to sign into the program and learn about a global movement that reaches tens of millions of students in over 180 countries. “These one-hour tutorials, available in over 40 languages, currently total over close to 200,000 Hour of Code events around the world,” said Mrs. McInerney. “Every class at Sycamore,

kindergarten through fifth grade, participated in this worldwide initiative.” Students from Edward J. Bosti and Helen B. Duffield elementary schools enjoyed playing educational games with themes such as “Star Wars” and “Minecraft,” all the while learning important coding techniques along the way.

For an unbelievable twenty-nine years, Sayville Seniors have been enjoying the annual Senior Breakfast, and there is no reason to stop now. This wonderful tradition offers the students the opportunity to bond as a class, to reflect about their years in Sayville, and to give thanks to those who have made their journey memorable. Rocking the Relay Connetquot High School recently hosted a benefit concert headlined by a Connetquot student-led youth rock band, Route 111, to help raise awareness for both the Relay for Life event taking place May 13th and the “Tumor Tacklers” initiative. The Relay for Life helps the American Cancer Society fund groundbreaking research, important patient care programs, and provides education and prevention information. Connetquot High School will host the Relay for Life for the first time, during which

community members will join together and walk to remember those who lost their cancer battles, the survivors making strides and raise funds to support the American Cancer Society. The ‘Tumor Tacklers,” in association with the National Brain Tumor Society, works to raise awareness and much needed resources to fund critical brain tumor research in support of Connequot’s Director of Fine Arts and Music, JonMichael Lasher. “Our main goal was to generate interest in

our upcoming Relay for Life, and I believe we accomplished that,” said Courtney Huguenin, Connetquot High School psychologist and coorganizer of Rock the Relay. “After the holidays we will have a Relay for Life informational meeting for community members who would like to participate or provide support.” Route 111 consists of Connetquot High School students Thomas Foschino, Paul Foschino and Micah Varriale, and Smithtown High School West student Nick Santori.

In preparation for the upcoming holiday season, Connetquot School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School students in Krysten Lineman’s and Keri Farrell’s first-grade classes were recently joined by

their family members for a fun-filled gingerbread house building activity. The students were previously taught the fundamentals of building a proper gingerbread house in their classrooms, and then used their knowledge

PARK RESTORATION - The Friends of the Grange organization, which is dedicated to promoting and restoring the historic buildings at the Islip Grange Park in Sayville, recently presented the Town with a check for $50, 972.05.
