Mindful Giving

Earlier this school year, Fire Island’s Woodhull Elementary School introduced an eightweek mindful education program, which included lessons on becoming more empathetic and understanding toward others. As part of this mission, the school

recently coordinated two community service drives for those living locally and working abroad. Working together, the school students and staff collected several boxes of nonperishable food items for a Thanksgiving food drive benefiting Long Island Cares and families in need. The first and second

grades also donated 17 pounds of Halloween candy to Dr. Tichler’s dentist office for soldiers serving the country. It was noted that Woodhull’s donation was among the top amounts received, for which they were awarded a letter of commendation.

He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldfish quite like you.

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

Author Visits Woodhull Woodhull Elementary School students had the chance to learn about the writing profession firsthand when author Maria LaPlaca Bohrer visited the building as part of the school’s PARP program. Bohrer, author of

Sofia’s Stoop Story, spoke about the writing process and emphasized the importance of revision as showed her original manuscript and the 27 rewrites she completed. Bohrer also spoke about the collage and acrylic

style of the illustrations and took the time to point out in detail the meaning of each picture. At the end, students had the opportunity to ask questions and purchase signed copies of the book.

Identity theft occurs when someone steals personal information such as your Social Security number, birth date or mother’s maiden name. Many people don’t know they’ve been victimized until a collection agency comes knocking on their door. Identity theft is a growing problem but there are steps you can take to prevent it. • Never give out personal information over the phone, on the Internet or through the mail unless you initiate the transaction or know whom you’re dealing with. • Don’t reveal any personal information before you find out how it will be used and shared with others. When someone requests your Social Security number, ask if you can provide alternate information. At medical offices, use an identifier that is not your Social Security number. • Ensure the passwords to your credit card, bank, phone and all other online accounts aren’t easily available and can’t easily be guessed. Avoid using obvious information such as your birth date, digits in your Social Security number or your mother’s maiden name. Change your passwords periodically, particularly those associated with financial accounts. • Keep items with personal information in a safe place, such as a locked storage device or password-protected electronic file. Tear up or shred all unnecessary papers containing Social Security numbers, account numbers and birth dates before discarding them so “dumpster divers” can’t retrieve them. • Protect your mail. Veterans Breakfast Recently, the Sayville High School History Club student members and moderators Sue Hart and Mike Pace celebrated their second annual Breakfast for Veterans in the specially decorated High School Senior Lounge. After History Club President Jared Burgen and Vice President Shreeya Panigrahi welcomed everyone and expressed gratitude for the Veterans’ service and sacrifices, Sophomore Emily Llewellyn, opened the event with a moving a capella

rendition of the National Anthem. Her performance was immediately followed by the impressive Sean Barry, in full traditional attire, playing America the Beautiful on the bagpipes. As the guest Veterans introduced themselves one-by-one and explained their service histories, the History Club members demonstrated both great respect when listening to the Veterans and genuine enthusiasm when they engaged in conversations later over a delicious breakfast. Mrs. Hart and

Mr. Pace were not only pleased to see forty-five History Club members attend, they were thrilled with how well the Veterans and students mingled. At the end of the breakfast, the History Club made one final presentation. Knowing how much the Veterans like to play scratch-off, the History Club members made a gift of $200 in scratch-off lottery tickets for the Veterans who will be participating at the Holiday Luncheon this year.

Think Bright, Do It Right Ms. Susan White, Principal of Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School in Bohemia took part in several interactive skits performed by the school’s 5th grade Peer Moderators. On October 23rd, Ms. White and YFS (Youth & Family Services) Coordinator Mrs. Donna Leopardi, watched as students performed several anti-bully/anti-drug skits as a kickoff to the district’s

United We Stand For A Drug And Bully Free Community week. The 5th graders acted out the danger of illegal drugs, and the scourge of bullying. The performances demonstrated how being mean, verbally or physically, in a threatening manner is not only inappropriate, but hurtful, especially to youngsters. The audience was encouraged to speak up when they encounter

a bullying situation, not stand by, but try to get the attention of an adult who could help. Ms. White thanked the Peer Mediators and Mrs. Leopardi for the thoughtful skits, and the important messages they shared with their classmates. During Connetquot’s United We Stand week, district students renew their commitment to a healthy, drug-free and bully-free, lifestyle.

Bayport-Blue Point High School seniors Brendan Bateman and Nicole Copping received the 2014 Suffolk Zone annual award from the New York Association for Health, Physical Education,

Recreation and Dance. This award recognizes students who have demonstrated excellence both in the classroom and on the athletic field. Nominees are selected by their high school physical

education teachers based upon physical education achievement, scholarship in the classroom, outstanding character, leadership and, of course, being a role model in class.

On October 29th, Connetquot High School Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Brodsky, along with Youth & Family Services (YFS) Coordinators and students, continued the process of distributing Super Bowl gear throughout the district. 400 boxes containing winter wear, including a jacket, hat, scarf, gloves and backpack, were distributed to schools throughout the

district. The YMCA of Patchogue generously donated brand new Super Bowl XLVIII gear that was generated for volunteers who worked at last year’s Bronco’sSeahawks championship game hosted at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Mr. Brodsky thanked the YMCA organization for passing these colorful, warm, memorable, jackets for distribution to members

of the Connetquot community. Nothing Short Of Magical Sayville Middle School Music Department’s presentation of The Wiz was nothing short of magical, from the fanciful costumes, high-tech special effects, entertaining acting, and especially to the amazing voices. Launched in 1974, The Wiz was the familiar story of Dorothy’s trip to Oz, retold with soul, along with new music and story adaptations. Forty years later, after numerous national tours and Broadway revivals, its legacy remains in such popular songs as Ease On Down The Road, Believe In Yourself, Y’All Got It and Soon As I Get Home. Upholding Sayville Middle School’s exceptional reputation for remarkable Musical productions, The Wiz was a crowd-pleaser. The costumes alone appealed to every Wizard of Oz fan, but the wizardry behind the animated sequences - especially when inserts of the actual performers became part of the animation, i.e., Eighthgrader Alex Pittari as the Wizard appears to sail off in the hot air balloon, and the good witches, Kaitlyn Maher and Allison Lynn, also are seen waving gracefully as they float away in a magical bubble - immensely impressed audiences of all ages. (“How did they do that?” a youngster whispered out loud in awe one night, echoing the quieter thoughts of nearby adults. Credit goes to High School Junior and animator Sean McNally who used video-game-maker software for the effect.) While live theatre often has challenging moments that might seem like cyclones descending on Kansas cornfields, the cast and crew weathered through such unexpected twists (microphone woes, digital glitches, and a sick lead performer) with professionalism and talent, pulling off an ovation-worthy production every night. There are so many to congratulate for creating memorable magic, beginning with the following performers: Cast as Dorothy, Samantha LoGrippo was stellar, always in perfect character as the spunky, determined Dorothy who was whisked away to the wondrous world of OZ on an adventure of a lifetime. Similarly, Sam’s beautiful voice, as powerful as the gale force winds, transported audiences to believe Dorothy “would be alright’ even before she could “get home.”

The stumbling Scarecrow in search of a brain was as adorable as ever thanks to Jonathan Nolan’s high-energy witticisms, comic timing, and physicality that imbued life into the bumbling bag of straw who learns to think on his feet. Evan Powers, the upended trash barrel of a Tin Man, gave a cast iron performance as the re-formed woodsman who, even without a heart, protects and defends his companions with his emotional intensity. (A ‘showmust-go-on moment’ occurred on Friday night when back stage Evan was abruptly incapacitated by a sudden stomach virus right before his entrance. Resourceful directors, cast, and crew found the quickest solution: ensemble member Cameryn Surdi bravely filled the Tin

Man’s shoes [actually his cap] and pantomimed the part, while off stage, Rowen Mahoney provided the voiceover from the script. The audience had no problem adjusting to the substitution and demonstrated their appreciation with hearty applause for Cameryn during curtain call.) Fortunately, Evan was a real trooper and reprised his role flawlessly as Tin Man on Saturday. Show-stealing Cowardly Lion was every bit the center of attention with Shaun Gibbons embracing the role with gusto, musicality and showmanship that made him a lively, hilarious, and memorable presence – fun to watch in every scene. Witches Addaperle (Kaitlyn Maher), Evillene (Christina LaFroscia) and Glinda (Allison Lynn) may have made brief appearances in character, but the young ladies played their small parts in a big way. Addaperle was less adept at magic, Kaitlyn was not short of talent in both acting and singing He’s The Wiz, especially with munchkin back-up. Making a frightening onstage presence - Evillene’s make up was masterfully horrifying - yet, Christina showed no stage fright with her wickedly diabolical acting, encantations of “eleka nahmen namen...” (borrowed from Wicked), and singing as the most feared witch in all of Oz. Bubbly Glinda in all her finery, played by the sparkling Allison, was beautiful to behold and hear, her lilting voice clear and resonating in Believe In Yourself. The Great Wizard, solidly played by Alex Pittari, was unbeatable as the ordinary man from Nebraska and revered master prestidigitator in Oz. Appearances by Aunt Em (Gabby Medeck) Uncle Henry/ Lord High Underling (Alex Maksimiak), Messenger (Matthew Zender), Gatekeeper (Adele Micelli), Toto (Cooper McNally) along with the Munchkins, Mice from the Mice Squad, Tornadoes, Crows, Yellow Brick Road, Poppies, Kalidahs, Trees, and ensemble cast filled the mystical world that would finally fade like a dream once Dorothy clicked her silver slippers three times. As all of Oz retreated somewhere over a rainbow, Sam LoGrippo’s Dorothy finished with a powerful reprise of Home that was so satisfying, audiences sighed, feeling the joy of reunion for all matters of home and hearth, along with heartfelt hugs for Toto, too. There was no great sorcery involved in producing Sayville’s Middle School musical; it was just the hard work and dedication of an amazing crew behind the scenes. Celebrating Togetherness

As popular as ever, the tradition of the Senior Class Breakfast has been giving members of the Sayville High School graduating class a unique opportunity to spend time together over a nourishing morning meal. This year’s Senior Class of 2015 Advisors Lynn Ann Perlin and Katherine Van Dorn showed great effort in making the celebration special. Photos, streamers, even the Frost Valley Banner, transformed the cafeteria walls, while every table was covered with tablecloths, centerpieces, glitter, and candy. For the

students’ reading pleasure, the Advisors compiled a souvenir booklet of memorable quotes by fellow classmates. In addition to the traditional slide show of pre- “Senior” moments, Mrs. Perlin edited a video, with the assistance of Mr. Rick Caskey, in which High School administrators, faculty, and staff expressed their heartfelt well wishes for the Class of 2015. It was such a very special treat for all. This year, Parkville Deli returned to provide the delicious breakfast fare, and Senior Class parents

doled out the portions to the hungry bunches of seniors, along with administrators, faculty, and staff who mingled in the breakfast line. Steaming trays of everyone’s favorites: bacon, eggs, omelets, French toast, home fries, along with bagels, fresh fruit with yogurt, juice, coffee, and all the trimmings were once again provided to make this great tradition, originally launched years ago by Senior Class Advisor Mrs. Marie Joost-Cox and Principal Joseph Buderman, as mouthwatering as ever.

INTERACTIVE HISTORY - Students from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently created shark teeth from plaster and rubber mold, carving scrimshaw - engravings done in bone or ivory - on them as part of the school’s interactive Native American history lesson. The school welcomed Christina Godfrey from the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences to speak to students about Native Americans and how they influenced the history of Long Island.
