In addition to Mr. McElheron’s expansive résumé as an educator, he also served as a school psychologist in the Sachem Central School District for 23 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Le Moyne College, a Master of Science degree in education from Queens College with a sixth-year professional diploma in school psychology, and an advanced graduate certificate in educational administration from Stony Brook University. He is pursuing his doctoral degree in administration and supervision from St. John’s University.

History of the Dreidel to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of

the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels

instead, says Chabad. org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”

New York Blood Center And Area Hospitals Launch Initiative To Increase Blood Donations Area hospitals and academic medical centers including NYC Health + Hospitals, Northwell Health, NewYorkPresbyterian, Weill Cornell Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Mount Sinai Health System, Montefiore Health System and Catholic Health Services of Long Island are joining forces with New

York Blood Center (NYBC) to increase blood donations. Temporary blood shortages are not uncommon during summer and winter holidays each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has created a chronic shortage across the country that shows no sign of improving. This reality is particularly dangerous given the looming uncertainty

surrounding the pandemic’s trajectory over the course of this winter. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Prior to the pandemic, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations,

but nearly all high schools, colleges, offices and other community groups have had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19. Blood donors can now make appointments to visit donor centers, but donations are at just 65% of pre-pandemic levels - well below what is needed by hospitals and patients in our area. “The entire foundation

of the way people donate blood has changed. The convenience factor of walking down the hallway while at work, getting out of class or donating after religious services is gone. Instead, we have to rely on people taking the extra step of proactively seeking out a place to donate. So far, that isn’t happening at the level we need,” said Andrea H.

Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director of Recruitment & Marketing for New York Blood Center. “In normal times, announcing a blood emergency would create a short-term increase in blood donations, but this will not solve this particularly difficult shortage longterm. This is an incredibly challenging time for our communities.”

Congratulations to the students in Lauren Daquet’s Food Prep class at Islip Career Center. Every Thursday, these students prepare lunch for staff and students who place orders in advance, which gives them authentic restaurant experience. They organize incoming orders, handle the money, prep and prepare every meal under deadline pressure, and deliver everything as well. During a recent week, they produced more than 100 meals for the lunch rush,

which is three times more than the average Thursday. The class changes the menu each week to reflect what they are learning. The recent marathon rush incorporated sauces, such as marinara sauce for the chicken parmesan, a derivative sauce for the penne a la vodka, and a traditional béchamel to create macaroni and cheese. Said Daquet, “My students are working just as they would in a restaurant. It’s fast paced, it’s stressful.

They are focusing on teamwork, sanitation, time management; they are multitasking. They are training to not only work in a kitchen, but for any job that has similar demands.” Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that offers Special Career Education Programs, which provide skills training to students with special education needs. This training may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries.
