As the team came home, they were greeted by a cheering crowd of more than 100 fans and two celebratory fire trucks from the Bohemia Fire Department. The 2015 championship win was the first in the school’s history.

Connetquot Central School District Sycamore Avenue Elementary School 4th grade students, 8-9 years-old, recently celebrated the fall with a seasonal “Pumpkin Roll.” The Sycamore Avenue
Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) sponsored filling the school’s recreation field with bright orange pumpkins, from which students selected their favorites. Each class of students to
visit the field was asked to roll the pumpkins from the bottom of the field to the top, where PTA members were waiting with plastic bags to help students wrap their pumpkins to take home.

Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2015/2016 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st, the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and we will be closed on December 24th, December 25th and January 1st. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours”, said Mrs. Weik. “On Monday, January 11th, the office
will remain open until 7:00 p.m.” Of course, residents can save time by visiting the Town of Islip website (www. townofislip-ny.gov) and pay their taxes online or by mailing their tax payments. However, to avoid penalty, all payments must be

King Kullen Grocery. Co., Inc. opened a new supermarket in North Patchogue on Friday, December 4th, at the site of the former Waldbaum’s at 440 West Sunrise Highway, South Service Road. Acquired by King Kullen this autumn after Waldbaum’s parent company, A&P, declared bankruptcy, the new King Kullen provides customers with greater selection throughout, including store-made prepared meals, an expanded fresh produce section, and a bakery whose original offerings include storebaked artisanal banquettes, available in traditional and multigrain varieties.
“From the moment we acquired the store we’ve been focused on how to make it better and give customers everything they want in a modern supermarket,” explains King Kullen Senior Vice President Joseph Brown. “I’m happy to say that while shoppers will find many changes and improvements, they will still recognize most of the same employees they knew from Waldbaum’s. A proud union company, King Kullen offered employment to these men and women and also hired additional workers from nearby stores that had closed due to A&P’s bankruptcy. We’re committed to
North Patchogue and the surrounding communities and are very excited to be here.” North Patchogue Store Manager Joseph Notaro says one way the new King Kullen is addressing the needs of the surrounding community is by offering time-strapped shoppers a number of options, including specialty prepared meals that are ready to bring home and serve. “We’re on the westbound South Service Road of Sunrise Highway,” he explains. “Many people pass the store on the way back from work or before turning down Waverly Avenue towards Patchogue
Village. Now they can stop in and pick up great, healthy meal options prepared by our culinary team, with the selections changing daily.” According to Notaro, the prepared items - which are available at the service counter or pre-packed and ready to bring home - include complete meals, such as London broil or roasted vegetable lasagna; nutritious salad options, ranging from grain-based harvest wheatberry to Thai coconut quinoa; and traditional hot and cold soups as well as more diverse choices, including shrimp and corn chowder or black bean with shredded pork.

King Kullen Opens Visitors to the new King Kullen will also discover a host of technological advances designed to facilitate ordering and enhance the shopping experience. For example, the deli department boasts two digital screens and four kiosks where customers can place orders and continue shopping. When the order is ready, they either receive a text message or are paged whichever they prefer. During peak times a deli employee will come out from behind the counter and take orders via a tablet. Even the store’s full-service pharmacy department offers online prescription refills to save people time.
“The new store makes shopping easier and more enjoyable,” observes Brown. “It’s what King Kullen is all about. Since our founding 85 years ago, we’ve been locally owned and operated. We’re still going strong because we listen to customers to determine how we can serve them better. We know what they want in a supermarket and you see that reflected in the new store.” The North Patchogue King Kullen is open 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. Monday to Saturday; 7:00 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays. Taking a Stand Mr. Failla spoke to the students about his experience serving the community, including how to avoid making destructive decisions, learn conflict management, accept personal responsibility and be a leader. He also spoke candidly with students about the negative effects of bullying, how to avoid
bullies, racism, internet safety and staying away from illegal drugs. After the presentation, RMS Guidance staff and Principal Charles D. Morea joined school community in thanking Paul Failla for sharing his experience and wisdom to help students protect themselves online and stand up against bullies.

Library in the Lobby Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts (PTPA) is proud to announce an exciting new partnership with the PatchogueMedford Library (PMLIB). The partnership between the two community-based nonprofit organizations will expand lobby programming to the literary arts with “Library in the Lobby” (LITL), a new series aimed at providing an interactive experience for readers and writers alike with access to authors and their works, writing workshops and more to broaden the local arts and literary scene of the Greater Patchogue area. “We are proud to partner with our neighbor, the Patchogue-Medford Library,” said John Ashline, executive director of Patchogue Theatre for
the Performing Arts. “After the great success of our author event in October with mummy expert Dr. Bob Brier and receiving numerous requests for another event, we realized the literary arts were underserved in Patchogue and there was a niche to be filled. It was a natural choice to have the Library join us in this endeavor; a good pairing of public and private entities working together to educate and entertain the public.” “Library in the Lobby” joins Patchogue Theatre’s robust and unique lobby programming, which includes “Laughter in the Lobby,” live comedy in Patchogue featuring Long Island and New York City comedians for a low cost ($10 tickets); “The New Musicals Project,” Long Island playwrights and
musicians performing original musical theater works; and “Live in the Lobby,” which pays Long Island musicians to perform their own original music (rather than covers) for a live audience. Heralded by The New York Times as “...a felicitous space for music listening,” “Live in the Lobby” is celebrating its 10 year anniversary this January. Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts has truly become a “venue within a venue.” “We are delighted to partner with Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts to increase literary events available to our area. Being able to increase our offerings with the help of incredibly creative professionals in such a renowned venue, is a wonderful addition to our
current programs,” said Lauren Nichols, director at the Patchogue-Medford Library. “Providing access to writers and thought leaders is a fantastic way to cultivate community growth and engagement.” The first “Library in the Lobby” event will be in the new year on Sunday, January 10th, at 3 p.m., and will feature a book discussion & signing with Long Island University (LIU) political philosophy professor and author Michael Soupios, Ph.D. Soupios will give a 45-minute lecture on his latest book, “The Ten Golden Rules of Leadership: Classical Wisdom for Modern Leaders” (AMACOM), co-authored with LIU economics professor Panos Mourdoukoutas, Ph.D. With eight graduate
degrees, including four doctoral degrees, Soupios is a modern day renaissance man. He has written six books on the subject of political philosophy and is currently writing a seventh book. “Ten Golden Rules” answers today’s workplace leadership questions through the wisdom of classic thinkers such as Aristotle, Heraclitus and Sophocles. Call for Artists The Art League of Long Island invites artists from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit entries to the upcoming juried competition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” showing in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016. Deadline to submit application is February 16th, 2016. The Art League invites artists to submit their visual interpretation of motion. An art work may incorporate actual motion; that is, the artwork itself moves in some way. Kinetic art is live movement that displays actual motion when we view it. Or it may incorporate the illusion of, or implied movement. In a non-moving image, the artist captures the sense of implied movement through the attributes present in the image. Movement can be suggested visually in a variety of ways: through

A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.
As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-
state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

The Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) recently surprised its Ladies Volleyball Team in celebration of the team’s recent New York State AA Championship win. As the team came home, they were greeted by a cheering crowd of more than 100 fans and two celebratory fire trucks from the Bohemia Fire
Department. The fire department organized a colorful parade of vehicles to congratulate the team and welcome them home. Friends, family, Board of Education president Mrs. Milynn Augulis and New York State Senator and Connetquot Alum Hon. Tom Croci welcomed the team home with balloons, banners and flowers, showing their tremendous
pride in the CHS Ladies Volleyball team’s great accomplishment. The 2015 championship win was the first in the school’s history. Cassandra Patsos, Mackenzie Cole and Nicole Migliozzi were

The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and
the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know
there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School student-athlete Jenna Phillips recently announced her college commitment to Bucknell University, starting in the fall of 2016. During her time at Connetquot High School,
Ms. Phillips was an accomplished competitor in track & field, basketball and soccer. She will join the Bison track & field team at Bucknell, a liberal arts college located in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Bucknell competes in the NCAA division-I Patriot League and ranks #2 in

Bayport-Blue Point High School advanced placement Spanish classes visited with Academy Street Elementary School fifth-graders during a joint venture designed to enable both groups to utilize the Spanish language skills they’ve learned in the classroom in a practical manner. During the event, the
high school students from Kerri McGuire’s classes shared the original and individualized books they created for the FLEX students in Sally Miller’s fifth-grade classes. The high school students then taught a mini-lesson to their fifth-grade partners, which focused on ways to order food in Spanish, and engaged in small, informal
conversations. The groups then had the chance to sample several ethnic foods from various Hispanic countries. The Bayport-Blue Point School District’s elementary foreign language program introduces students to a language in the thirdthrough fifth-grades.

By: Alexandra H. Rodrigues, Massapequa The little blue spruce spread its twigs. To be noticed, it tried many tricks. With hatchets, workers chopped down all Of the evergreens that had grown tall. They took away all the towering trees. Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees. To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant. All over different cities they were sent. Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced. The grounds yawned where the trees had been. Only the unwanted little spruce was seen. Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall. He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim. On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone. “Father, oh father, come and see. Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!” The child exclaimed and stroked the tree. “This is just the right size for me!”
