Staff members helped decorate, heat food and serve students a delicious meal that included turkey, stuffing, potatoes, corn and green beans. Woodhull Gives Thanks Fire Island’s Woodhull Elementary School students and staff helped to mark the holiday season during a school feast in the newly renovated school lunchroom. Staff members helped decorate, heat food and serve students a delicious meal that included turkey,

stuffing, potatoes, corn and green beans. Ms. Crawson’s primary class donned turkey hats which they made themselves and after the meal performed a short song “Five Plump Turkeys.” Later, Ms. McNulty’s early elementary students together read aloud a Thanksgiving story

Learning the Basics with PSEG and the new 211 nonemergency health and human services phone system in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The event featured a combination of hands-on activities and video clips from Sesame Workshop. Through the activities, the students learned the importance of knowing their address, what to do in case of an emergency,

the proper use of 911 and 211 phone numbers, and locating important items such as blankets, flashlights, bandages or water, in case of emergencies or disasters. Students each received yellow hard hats and an educational coloring book with crayons as part of the event.

At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. the students collected 80 pounds of candy along with a plethora of items from the Blue Star Mom’s list, such as toiletries, socks, games, protein snacks, and gum. “It was a win-win-win situation,” Maurici said. “The students donated their candy which was

My Grownup Christmas List When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Centereach Academic Center staff and students honored veterans who served in World War II, Vietnam, and Korea at a Salute Our Veterans and Thanksgiving luncheon. Special Education and Social Studies Teacher Zachary Gallo said, “The luncheon was a time to thank the veterans and spend time with them. We have our freedoms and rights because of their service to our country.” Gallo said, “Students learned a valuable lesson in patriotism and what it means to serve in the military.” Some of the students had never met a veteran or someone who served, or is serving, in the military. Honorees included Roger Kilfoil from the Honor Flight Program;

Douglas Cox, World War II Veteran; Michael Chierico, Vietnam War Veteran; Derrick Sperling, Air Force Veteran; Michael Calderone, Army Veteran; Brian Darren, Vietnam War Veteran; and Matthew McGiff, active duty service member. Ninety-two year old World War II veteran Douglas Cox spoke of his experiences as an aeronautical engineer during World War II and shared how he transported supplies between Hawaii and other locations within the Pacific. He also spoke about his trip with Gallo to Washington D.C. through the Honor Flight Program. The Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization that was launched to transport World War II and Korean War veterans to

Washington, D.C., to visit their memorials. Gallo personally escorted Cox to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials. Gallo’s students also wrote letters to Cox thanking him for his service and told him how they were inspired by him. In his closing remarks, Physical Education Teacher Chris Poplaski said, “It can’t be said enough. Thank you to the veterans and to those actively serving. You are the heroes that inspire us to do great things.” Students in the carpentry class were inspired to create a patriotic clock made from repurposed materials. It is being donated to the VA Hospital in Northport where Mr. Poplaski donates his time.

GINGERBREAD HOUSE - On Friday, December 2nd, children from pre-school to teens decorated Gingerbread Houses at the Connetquot Public Library. With programs in the morning, afternoon and evening, children utilized their creativity to build imaginative and tasty gingerbread houses for the holidays. With the help of Guy Gagliano from Swan Bakery, children used colorful delicious candies and icings, creating delectable designs for the holiday season!

Stitching Together Traits In an effort to promote the sharing of positive character traits, fourthgraders in Kimberly Rall’s Academy Street Elementary School class recently made a quilt showcasing various traits and symbols that the students consider important to everyday learning. “In the first unit, students learned about symbols and communities,” said Ms. Rall. “As the culminating

activity, students designed a symbol that represents a skill or personality trait, and included various colors that are symbolic of important ideas as well. For example, a student drew the scales of justice because she is fair to others, and another student drew a meter that shows a scale starting at ‘bored’ and ending at ‘eager’ because he thinks that being eager is an important part of learning.”

The completion of the quilt was made possible due to the generous contribution from Christine Scorza and Deborah D’Ambrose of 112 Sewing Supplies Inc., located in Patchogue. The business donated a brand new sewing machine courtesy of Brother Industries in order for the class to complete their quilt.

Week in Review Connetquot High School students enrolled in English teacher Ross Castaldo’s Sports Journalism half-year elective course have recently been writing, producing and filming an end of the week wrap-up, titled “Week in Review.” This is an opportunity to update all faculty and students of news-worthy happenings throughout

twenty-four students the opportunity to stretch their dramatic wings and engage in the flights of fancy with comedy. For years now, the goal of the Sayville drama program, as spearheaded by Hailey, was to give as many students as possible the chance to enrich their understanding of others by stepping into the shoes of dramatic characters for stage performances. Time and time again, the Sayville Players have proven they can fill those shoes. Such was the case with The Odd Couple. Three casts in four nights added up to great comedy. Whether you attended The Odd Couple performances with Florence and Oliver performed by the two women’s casts or The Odd Couple with Felix and Oscar (or saw all three casts), you were not disappointed with the hilarious portrayals of these beloved Neil Simon

characters. The dynamic chemistry among the actors along with the fastpaced dialog sustained the comic timing, made you forget the performers were high school students, and delivered lively entertainment each night. While both versions of The Odd Couple had distinct differences, particularly due to gender perspectives, they shared in common the universal truths that focused on the challenging friendships among a circle of friends with sharply different sometimes polarizing personalities. Both version were staged with paralleled scenes, yet each cast delivered a fresh dynamic. Congratulations to the young ladies and young men who demonstrated maturity, ability, and comedy in every one of their believable performances.

“This is a great opportunity for the students,” said Mr. Castaldo. “The biggest reward that the students will be able to take out of this is that they’re getting the hands-on skills required to be a news reporter, and none of this would have been possible without Christina Poppe, our district director of English Language Arts.”

Service to Community Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco presented a proclamation to honor the Excellence in Library Service Award winner Linda Accardi of the Patchogue-Medford Library. Accardi was given the award for her years of dedicated work serving the Patchogue-Medford area.

Lauren Nichols was presented a Proclamation by Legislator Calarco for her service to the community. Nichols was instrumental in reopening the historic Carnegie Library and has served as director of the PatchogueMedford Library since 2013. She is stepping down

as director of the library on December 31st. Legislator Calarco presented the proclamations to Nichols and Accardi at a General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature on November 22nd at the County Legislative Building in Hauppauge.

Card Recycling Drive Keep Islip Clean’s annual Card Recycling Drive promises to be a record breaker, with cards already pouring into the KIC office just days after the official start to the project. Many people contribute used holiday cards in January, but greeting cards of all kinds are also wanted. KIC’s Junior Commissioners will sort

the cards, remove the backs and send the neatly prepared fronts to St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. Volunteers at that organization will construct “new” cards, repackage and sell them to support children’s programs. KIC is also accepting brand new cards with their envelopes, which will be used for a letter writing

campaign to soldiers overseas. Greeting cards can be dropped off at the KIC office, 660 Main Street, Islip until Tuesday, January 31st. For their annual Fall ‘Bare Bones” production, the Sayville High School Drama Club performed two versions of The Odd Couple over a fourday period. The famous original The Odd Couple - the male version with Felix and Oscar - written by prolific playwright Neil Simon in 1965, had starred Walter Matthau and Art Carney on Broadway; the updated female version with Florence and Olive, also written by Simon two decades later, starred Rita Moreno and Sally Struthers in the title roles. Thanks to an abundance of acting talent among the Sayville students, Sayville Players director Steven Hailey decided not only have his drama troupe perform both versions, he also assembled a third cast for the female version. As there were only eight-parts per cast, having three casts allowed

the school. Connetquot High School junior Maggie Gioia and sophomore Joe Savino, both aspiring journalists, have been serving as the news anchors since the broadcast’s inception in mid-November. They will be continuing this effort through mid-January, when a new group of newscasters will take over for them.

and Megan Romano did very well. The 200 Medley Relay, with Meghan Caraher swimming the breaststroke, Megan Donnelly swimming the butterfly, and Leighann Gensch swimming the

freestyle, placed 15th in the state. The 400 Freestyle Relay, with both Leighann Gensch and Megan Donnelly, placed 24th in the state. Megan Romano placed 38th in the state. Great job girls!

FEED LONG ISLAND - Often, pictures are worth a thousand words; and in this case, the more pictures, the merrier the story. On a Saturday in November, the Sayville High School Interact Club, along with the Rotary Club of Sayville, sponsored the “Feed Long Island Program” with The Outreach Program. Gathering for one purpose, the Sayville students, faculty, administrators and community volunteers packaged 8,500 donated meals for distribution to local food pantries.

On the Air If you haven’t heard the 103.9 LINews Radio series Spotlight on Long Island Schools, hosted by Robert Vecchio and broadcast in two ten-minute segments, then you are missing out on positive news about Long Island students, teachers, and school programs. A particularly heartwarming broadcast that aired on October 29th focused on a group of Sayville students and their experiences in the district’s groundbreaking Functional Academics and Career Development program. After commenting that the students were accompanied to the radio booth by a “whole entourage” of supporters, LINews host Bob Vecchio began his interview with Sayville Special Ed administrator Tracy Von Eschen who outlined the benefits and goals that are available for the FACD students. During her introduction, Von Eschen gave a snapshot of services, explaining how FACD Special Education Teacher Donna Trpicovsky works with the students and engages them in a diversity of opportunities. Along with the academics, these students work in the school store, receive assistance from job coaches, belong to SHS sports teams, and had in the fall participated in the Homecoming preparations and the parade. “The program is unique in that you integrate all student populations to help mentor those taking some of the vocational courses,” Vecchio stated before inviting one such mentor to the microphone. Jayna, a Sayville Freshman who had worked with special education students when she was in Sayville Middle School, expressed her sentiments that she shared with

other volunteers. “My favorite part is watching them learn. It’s great to see the bond that we’ve already have together, and I know that we are going to have a lot of fun throughout the year.” As FACD is year-round program, the students had also spent four days a week for six weeks this past summer going out to different job sites, such as Applebees, Bobs and Petco, to learn both new skills and discover new interests. On the fifth day, they had returned to the

Sayville High School’s greenhouse to reinforce their academics and business management skills. Vecchio continued the conversation with Claire Rymer, Transition Coordinator, who has the task of preparing the students for what’s next beyond the school district. “Transition is change,” Rymer said. “Transition begins at age fifteen….we work together… with the parents and students to develop a plan for these children for when they graduate, whether it be at eighteen or whether

they stay on with us until they’re twenty-one. Over the last four years, Tracy and I have worked on the program …to bring students back [to the district]…and really develop a program where there is not only emphasis on academics but there’s a huge emphasis on career and making a lot of these young kids career-ready when they leave us.” The most inspiring part of the broadcast, however, was listening to the FACD student express themselves - after receiving gentle encouragement from Vecchio and the Sayville educators - to talk about their school program on the air. And the students, despite their personal challenges, were more than willing to try. Highlighting their Functional Academics and Career Development program on LINews Radio was a wonderful and exciting experience for the Sayville High School “entourage.” But the real rewards came after they had signed off. Each of the students, along with their parents and educators, could not help but beam with pride for another job well done. Sayville Board of Education President John Verdone, a great supporter of the Spotlight on Long Island Schools Radio series, had been present when the FACD students taped the show. He was thrilled with the results. “The opportunity to attend this broadcast was one of the most rewarding experiences for me. As a community, Sayville is truly blessed with dedicated staff, students and parents that put the best interest of our children first. A special thanks to Long Island News Radio and Bob Vechicco for giving us the opportunity.”

Sharing ideas for positive change was the reason that two hundred students from thirteen Long Island schools convened for the 2016 Peer Leadership Middle School Conference that was hosted by Sayville Middle School. An outgrowth of Leadership Conferences offered at St. Joseph’s College by BOCES, the Middle School conference welcomed keynote speaker Willie Green from the Youth Alliance. In his address entitled “Overcoming Adversity and Challenging Yourself Despite Circumstances,” Green shared insights with the entire assembly. Afterwards, the students

and chaperones broke into workshops. Topics included The Impact of Sugar (presented by Lety Algeri, Nutrition and Wellness Educator) The Impact of Drugs, Addiction and Recovery (presented by Louis Iacona, LI Helps), Vaping and Tobacco Dangers (presented by Martha Kahan, HS Student Assistance Counselor), Perseverance, Overcoming Adversity and Setting Goals (presented by Robert Rodriguez AMP, Amputee Basketball Team), and Bullying - All You Need to Know (presented by Peter Michelman, Bay Shore Schools). These workshops focused on fostering leadership, raising awareness, encouraging goals and showed the students how to implement this information into their school community.

“Students were excited about the knowledge they gained, being able to participate in this experience and were eager to bring the information back to their home schools,” said Sayville Middle School Health and Nutrition teacher Jodi Maurici. “The feedback was amazing and extremely positive.” The Peer Leadership Conference was the result of an exemplary collaboration of Sayville Middle School staff. Student Assistance Counselor Paul Simonsen spearheaded the conference and was assisted by the Middle School faculty who organized and implemented activities as well as provided supportive technology, classroom space and extra time to help to make this program a success.

This past weekend, over 650 Angela’s House children, their siblings and their parents joined together to usher in the 2016 holiday season. With the continued support from Arthur Krantz, owner of PRC Industries and founder of We Care for Kids, Inc. Foundation and John Guadagno and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local Union 25, the Hauppauge union hall was transformed into a winter wonderland for the children and families of Angela’s House. Founder and Executive Director Bob Policastro said of the event, “It was an amazing weekend! We Care For Kids, Inc. was able to setup a fantasy holiday environment that fostered great joy and smiles for the medically fragile children of Angela’s House. We are blessed to have the support to make this possible.” Balloon Bouquets of Long Island decked out the room helping to really set the tone of a festive party atmosphere and

Parties by Ziggy provided non-stop entertainment, helping get the children out on the dance-floor and setting the bar high for the energy level in the room. The entertainment also included enthusiastic volunteers from Hauppauge’s Venturing Crew 872 who dressed up as some classic characters such as Mickey and Minnie and included some more modern characters such as Olaf from Frozen and Ryder from Paw Patrol. Incredible Ices, Incredible Ivan the magician and some really talented face painters added so much to the event, as did performances from local kick-line groups and dance groups like the Arrowettes from Sachem and the Patchogue Medford Raiderettes. The children and their parents we captivated by the presentation and special guests that Long Island’s own Nature Nick provided, including an armadillo, monkey, owl and even a kangaroo! Each of the children and their siblings had an opportunity to receive

a gift, and thanks to Mr. Krantz and his unending generosity, each family went home with a car-full of goodies, to bring them some extra cheer during the holiday season. This year marked the seventh year that this beautiful and special event is held. The children, who had nonstop smiles on their faces, and their families not only enjoyed themselves, but were able to connect with other Angela’s House families that they otherwise had never met. For a few hours, the stresses of caring for a medically fragile child were backseat to creating lasting memories and enjoying the holiday season.
