Holiday Toy Drive The Town of Islip Youth Bureau is calling all Santa’s elves and holiday cheerful, to help spread joy this holiday season, with the 2019 Islip Town Youth Bureau Annual Holiday Toy Drive! Come be a part of this great initiative to illuminate the holidays for a child less fortunate, by donating new and unwrapped toys by December 16th. The Zing is an inspirational book written by Licensed Mental Health Counselor, motivational speaker and founder and director of Family & Personal Counseling, Ronald Villano. Ronald tragically lost his son in a car accident in 1998 and his life changed forever. However, through writing this book, along with working in a field which allows him to help others, he has changed the lives of many for the better in memory and honor of his son. Changing your perspective on your circumstances can truly transform your life. The Zing was originally published in 2006 but it has regained popularity recently. Author Mr. Villano said, “I believe it’s the only self-help book that doesn’t tell you how to think, it provokes you how to think.” This book will teach you to change your perspective, make healthier decisions in your relationships and reduce stress. The book also includes pictures and opportunities to journal. Villano values journaling as a way to assist in any healing process. The Charity of the Month for December is: John Theissen Children’s Foundation www.jtcf.org
In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was
the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age

You can get involved with this Foundation in various different ways. All the Veterans were presented with lapel pins handmade by Valerie Lowe. This was followed by special presentation honoring W.W. II Veteran Petty Officer First Class E6 Navy Donald Decker, the grandfather of Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Decker. (Mr. Sal Nicosia and Mr. John Longo were specially honored last year.) After sharing his grandfather’s accomplishments (see insert), Mr. Decker presented him with an American Flag plaque (hand crafted by retired teacher Cheryl CallenAdams) to commemorate his service. The tribute continued with the Sayville Middle School community announcing that as a result of a fundraising activity, they had collected $500 to donate to two local veterans groups— Sayville VFW Post 433 and American Foreign Legion Post 651. In addition, guest dignitaries 7th District
Assemblyman, Andrew R. Garbarino and 4th District, NY State Senator, Phil Boyle shared a few words thanking the Veterans for their heroism and service. Principal Thomas Murray closed the ceremony with reminders why Veterans Day is important. This very special Middle School Ceremony demonstrated to the students that freedoms we all enjoy are hard won. Veterans Day is one way to acknowledge the service and sacrifice made by these brave men and women in the military who have shown tremendous moral courage to defend our country. To all our Veterans, thank you! After the concluding video salute of Amazing Grace, some of the Veterans remained to visit the classrooms and speak in smaller groups about their military experiences.
DECKER HONORED - During the 2019 Sayville Middle School Annual Veterans Day Tribute, 97-year-old Donald Decker, a World War II Veteran, was honored and presented with a handcrafted wooden American Flag by his grandson, Sayville Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Decker.

It’s “Home for the Holidays” in December at the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Town Waives Dog and Cat Adoption Fees All Month Farmingville. The Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is celebrating the holiday season with its “Home for the Holidays” promotion, featuring free pet adoptions throughout
the month of December. Each adoption includes free neuter or spay, vaccinations, microchip, license, heartworm test, flea and other tests. The normal adoption fees are $137 for a dog and $140 for a cat. Among the approximately forty Veterans invited to the 2019 Sayville Middle School Annual Veterans Day luncheon reception, three—Mr. Donald Decker, Mr. Sal Nicosia and Mr. John Longo—were Veterans in their nineties having served in WWII. Lunch was just the beginning of the special tribute for the Veterans in attendance. Once they had their picture taken at a restored Jeep parked in the Commons (donated for the occasion by Linda Davis), the Veterans were escorted to the main event in the filled-to-capacity auditorium of students and faculty. The Middle School Band played a military fanfare as the Veterans paraded into the auditorium where they were welcomed with a standing ovation lasting several minutes. Opening the celebration, the students and staff honored the Veterans who were seated on stage with America the Beautiful, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Middle School chorus sang God Bless America. A moving video tribute to the U.S. Military was followed by a few words from social studies teacher and veteran Major Mike Huggins. Selected

First Annual Health & Wellness 5K Walk/Run
Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez of the 9th District in collaboration with Pastor Steve Mangum of The House of Judah (THOJ) in Sayville, hosted the first Annual Health & Wellness 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, November 16, in Brentwood. Legislator Gonzalez and Pastor Mangum created the Health & Wellness 5K Walk/Run (a USA Track & Field (USATF) certified course) and Expo to promote the benefits that come from eating a balanced diet, engaging in physical activity, and getting out in nature. In keeping with the Health
& Wellness theme, the 5K started on the tranquil Sisters of St. Joseph campus in Brentwood, proceeded through the neighborhood, and returned. The windy, frigid weather could not chill the spirit of the attendees. To stay warm, entrants did calisthenics, ran in place, and participated in an impromptu Step / Line Dance. Children 12-years and under ran with all their might to win the gold, silver, and bronze medals in the kids 1/2–mile event. EMTs from Brentwood Legion Ambulance were on standby while the Heart and Health Mobile Medical
Unit performed free blood pressure screenings in their state-of-the-art van. Pastor Mangum stated, “I have known for some time that a healthy lifestyle helps to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Unfortunately, diseases like these are all too common in our community. Increasing awareness can save lives.” “So many people are too busy earning a living to eat right and exercise. I believe that there must be a balance, for you are rich when you have your health,” said Legislator Gonzalez.
Students Showcase Talents Beautiful renditions of several familiar songs rang through the auditorium at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School as several members of the Tri-M Honor Society took to the stage to perform
in this year’s talent show. The featured acts included student singers, instrumentalists and even dancers. In addition to the performers, several Tri-M members volunteered
behind the scenes with the stage and lighting crews. Audience members were highly impressed with the students and left looking forward to the next performance.

testing phase, the students competed in a schoolwide competition, yet again testing distance, power and accuracy. To the cheers of their fellow classmates, students competed in several rounds before a winner was named for the best overall catapult and best distance catapult.

Wall Constructed To Honor Veterans High School North alumni and those who responded were featured on the wall with their picture and branch of service. In addition to the wall, students and staff were able to show support for veterans in their life by writing their name on a yellow ribbon to be hung in a designated place in the
building. The wall is now a temporary addition to the building’s hallway, but the club plans to create a permanent fixture after compiling a full list of Sachem alumni who have served in the military, to recognize them for their selfless service to the county.
