GRANT RECEIVED - Options for Community Living, Inc. is the recipient of a $6,500 grant from the Burpee Foundation. Project SEARCH was designed to assist students with disabilities transition to adult life, and obtain and maintain competitive employment. The goal is for the students to learn marketable skills. At the ESBOCES Islip Career Center, Austin was enrolled in the Facilities Maintenance Program. There he learned how to spackle, install and maintain landscaping, do light carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.

This provided practical experience for Austin when he was accepted into the internship program at Medford Multicare. Throughout the internship, Josephine will work with Austin and the other students to learn complex yet systematic tasks. She said, “My job is to learn the job that a student will be doing. I break down the tasks of each job and create task analysis data. Austin is now able to do a 17-point check when he monitors and maintains the hallways at Medford Multicare. He doesn’t need a mentor for that anymore. The goal is for Austin to gain independence and feel accomplished.” Mr. Restrepo commended Austin’s spackling ability. He said, “I thought one of my maintenance men had done the work. When I found out that Austin did it, I asked him where he learned to spackle; he told

Celebrating PARP As an extension of the district’s work to foster students’ lifelong love for reading, Woodhull Elementary School in the Fire Island School District once again participated in the Parents As Reading Partners program this November. The initiative, coordinated by the school’s PTA, was a monthlong program that encouraged students and families to read together nightly and participate in daily

activities and events. The program kicked off with a schoolwide breakfast in early November, for which students and teachers alike came to school in their pajamas. As this year’s PARP was themed “Uncle Sam Wants You…to Read,” many of the events were patriotic in nature. Participants were encouraged to design a state flag to hang in the hallway, design a license plate for any U.S. state,

show their true colors by wearing only red, white and blue, or wear a T-shirt that could be read. In addition, there was a book fair and treasure hunt at Barnes and Noble and a schoolwide book swap. The program culminated with an arts-in-education program titled “Spirit of America” and a pizza party to celebrate the hundreds of minutes the students collectively read.

Making The Tough Choices

Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

Antibullying Message Cherry Avenue Third-grade Teacher Karen Donnelly scheduled a culmination of a very special unit for her Sayville students – a Celebrating Our Heritage Dessert Feast. The class began the unit with a reading of the book Molly’s Pilgrim by Barbara Cohen. “It is about a Third-grade girl named Molly who came to America with her family from Russia.” Mrs. Donnelly explained, paraphrasing the book jacket’s story summary. “Molly is bullied in school because she doesn’t talk and look like the other children in her class.When her teacher assigns the class a Pilgrimdoll project, Molly’s mother makes a clothespin doll to look like a Russian woman. Something wonderful happens as the class learns the true meaning of Thanksgiving, and that it takes all kinds of people to make up a great country like America.” Mrs. Donnelly asked her students to report on a country of their origins, present it to the class, and prepare a dessert from their country for the end-of-the-unit dessert feast - just before Thanksgiving break. The students were urged to invite their parents,

grandparents, aunts and uncles to the celebration. “I have encouraged students to bake with a member of their family. Last year I was so pleased to have a greatgrandmother of a student come to our feast and tell me that she and her great-granddaughter made Italian

Donnelly emphasized the lesson about bullying derived from Molly’s Pilgrim. “My students broke into groups to discuss and answer specific questions, such as: What does bullying look like? What does bullying feel like? What can you do if you are bullied? What can you do if you see bullying? They wrote their answers down on sentence strips, and we have it displayed in front of our classroom. As an extra credit project, students designed their own ‘Pilgrim clothespin dolls’ from their country of origin, which are displayed as well.” As entertainment for the guests at the Dessert Feast, the Third-graders performed a Reader’s Theater Script, recited a poem and sang a song. This was immediately followed by everyone enjoying desserts from around the world as they met each others special family members. “In our lives often filled with busy days and stress,” Mrs. Donnelly commented, cookies from an old, family recipe from generations “this unit is one of my favorites for bringing people before. Highlighting State Facts The historical importance and key facts about many of the nation’s 50 states were on display during this year’s fifthgrade “state fair” at Blue Point Elementary School. In preparation for the annual event, the students researched their assigned state and created

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from the Health Related Occupations Program (HRO) took their first steps to learn about the health care industry and job opportunities when they toured Medford Multicare Living Center. Presently, seven ESBOCES students are engaged in Project SEARCH internships at Medford Multicare learning marketable skills. Every ten weeks, Project

SEARCH students rotate into a new department and learn new skills. Said ESBOCES Teacher Linda Niosi, “We want the students to feel fulfilled and learn more and more skills.” Islip Career Center HRO Teacher Deirdre Kroupa said, “My students are learning the skills and knowledge necessary for entry-level employment in health related occupations. It is important for them to

see firsthand, and become orientated with, the workings of a health care facility.” Project SEARCH students at Medford Multicare are engaging in field experiences and class instruction while being introduced to roles and responsibilities of health care facility jobs in the areas of housekeeping, dietary, clerical, maintenance, and transfer.

SPARKY VISITS - Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School Principal Mrs. Denise Toscano, along with Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator Mrs. Lara McNally, recently welcomed Sparky, the mascot of the New York Islanders hockey team, and his friends to the school to help students realize the importance of making healthy choices. Sparky and his friends Deena, the Arena Hostess, and Ashley, a New York Islander Ice Girl, discussed the importance of exercise and healthy eating. With the help of different videos that featured NY Islanders hockey players, coaches and trainers, Sparky and his friends emphasized the importance of teamwork, achieving goals and what to do when confronted by a bully. During the event, younger students paraded around to each display and learned one central fact about the spotlighted state. The project offered students a hands-on and in-depth approach to studying their researched state as well as other states in the nation.

Acting The Part

French historical icons such as fashion designer Coco Chanel, singer Edith Piaf and Gustave Eiffel, the engineer of the Statue of Liberty and Eiffel Tower, came to life at James Wilson Young Middle School as students took part in the fourth annual Wax Meets Night at the Museum. During the event, the school’s 45 eighth-grade French students embodied a historic French individual of their choosing. After a visitor tapped their “activation buttons” and brought them to life, the students recited prepared monologues about the life and historical impact of their person. “This event allows

students to learn about French culture and history while honing public speaking skills,” said French teacher Gilles Desrochers. Prior to the event, the students completed preliminary research on personal areas of interest to find the character they’d like to learn about and depict. The students then completed a twoweek research project under the guidance of school media specialist Kelly Noeldechen, who provided them with research strategies, instructions on how to document their sources and help creating a final Internet project consisting of music, information

on the character and a timeline. This year, the students used MovieMaker as their primary software. Throughout the project, the students learned how to sift through the information they uncovered, evaluate their sources and decide on what separates fact from fiction. “This is purely a classmotivated activity to provide an alternative method of learning through character research and presentation,” said Mr. Desrochers. “I find public speaking an essential tool as students move forward in their educational careers and beyond; this helps to begin that process.”

The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO) is inviting high school-aged orchestral musicians and choral singers to audition for the July 8th through 21st, 2014 performance tour of The People’s Republic of China. Vandergelders’s employees Cornelius Hackl and Barnaby Tucker (respectively) “played hooky” from work to “have a good meal, spend all their money, see the stuffed whale in Barnum’s museum, almost get arrested, and each kiss a girl.” Each seventh grader played his big part with amusing showmanship and expertise—their comic timing, whether performing solo, in tandem, or while singing (both sang in It Takes a Woman, Dancing, and Luke soloed It Only Takes a Moment ) enhanced every scene. “Catching her gentleman’s eye,” dreamy Irene Malloy, owner of the millinery, was charmingly portrayed by a radiant Kate Donohue, giving audiences a special treat

when she showcased her delicate voice in the solo Ribbons Down My Back. A natural comedienne, Dea Ahlgrim, as a shop assistant Minnie Fay, was fresh, funny, and frolicsome in her lovely frocks and beautiful bonnet, acting the perfect foil for Barnaby (Jonathan Nolan). Melina Piervencenti was comical and effective as the perpetually wailing Ermengarde whose tantrums as Vandergelder’s niece were mostly ineffective in getting

STANDING UP TO BULLIES - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Youth and Family Services (YFS) recently organized a special assembly for the district’s annual United We Stand for a Drug and Bully Free Community Week. During the assembly, students recreated the roles of bully, target, victim and bystander and acted out the specific language and actions to take when confronted with bullying. Following the program, each student was invited to sign an anti-bully poster which will be displayed at the Sycamore Avenue School to reinforce the community’s commitment to eliminating bullying behavior. Upon Dolly’s advice, struggling artist, Ambrose Kemper (played by a lively Harrison Bench) entered a polka competition at the upscale Harmonia Gardens so as to earn Vandergelder’s permission to marry his niece. Sam LoGrippo’s sweeping performance revealed a memorable Ernestina Money, as a crass and unsophisticated golddigger. Head Waiter Rudolph (brought to red-faced fury by the marvelous Richard Cotes) barked orders that had made the wait staff tremble. Ancillary characters who filled out the cast included: Mrs. Rose (Amanda Wessels), Stanley (Alex Pitttari), Policeman (Dan Cliff), 1st Cook (Zoe Rivera), 2nd Cook (Abigail Newman), Court Clerk (Adele Micelli) Judge (Moira Mahoney), Coachman (Reggie Elton), and especially the High School musicians who marched in the parade! Serving as a spectacular backdrop were the intricately painted sets, the no-less dazzling costumes of the gorgeously attired ensemble cast, and the prancing dancers who as the waiters in the posh Harmonia Gardens, punctuated the comic interplay between lead performers with breathtaking acrobatics. Congratulations to Director Jeff Hoffman, Musical Director Fred Diekmann and Orchestra, Musical Director/Producer Kristi Woerner, Sound: Andrew Giammalvo, Lighting: Steve Hailey, Construction: Ken VanEssendelft, Artwork: Cora Sparwasser, Choreographers: Jillian Brudi & Jillian Dymek, Costumes: rented from Rebecca Wallis, as well as all the unsung production assistants, High School and parent volunteers, set designers, and crew. Thanks to their hard work and creative energy, the 2013 Sayville Middle School production of Hello, Dolly!, which obviously took MORE than a moment to prepare, will surely be remembered and “loved a whole life long.”

PLANTING THE PROMISE - Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School’s Mrs. Laura McNally, Coordinator of Youth and Family Services (YFS), recently invited Idle Hour Elementary School students to ‘Plant the Promise.’ The purpose of this exercise was to remind students once spring starts that they each made a promise to lead a healthy lifestyle by being drug and alcohol free. The unit is staffed 24 hours a day with physicians and nurses specially trained and certified in the care of critically ill patients. Project Lifesaver Representatives of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office recently delivered a Project Lifesaver transmitter bracelet to Kim Covell of Watermill whose son has autism. The start-up cost of getting the device for the family was underwritten by the East End Police Foundation, which has recently partnered with the Sheriff’s Office to help promote the initiative. Ms. Covell is the founder of the Flying Point Foundation for Autism. Project Lifesaver is a tracking system for Suffolk County residents who care for children or adults that have the propensity to wander from their homes or care facilities. The system is designed

to assist law enforcement and rescue agencies with locating lost or missing persons. Registered Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery-operated transmitter bracelet that emits an automatic tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Each transmitter has a range of several miles, and has its own frequency, enabling Deputy Sheriffs to positively locate and identify a missing person. To date, the Sheriff’s Office has purchased a total of ten tracking units with asset forfeiture funds, and recently expanded the number of Deputy Sheriffs trained to use the

equipment. “I encourage anyone caring for a loved one with autism or other cognitive challenges to look into Project Lifesaver. It offers great peace of mind to know that we have the capability to find them if they wander away unnoticed, and more importantly, to find them quickly to best ensure they are brought home safely,” stated Sheriff Vincent DeMarco.
