he winners of this year’s Fire Safety Poster Contest at Blue Point Elementary School, which was sponsored by the Blue Point Fire Department, received a ride home from school to remember just before the Thanksgiving holiday. The winners, three from each grade, were invited to board one of the department’s fire trucks and travel through town to celebrate their award-winning designs, which urged peers to take care regarding fire.

last month, a repeat of his 2010 accomplishment. Entering the junior college Final Four as the fourth seed with a 19-40 record, Suffolk played number one seed and host, Herkimer Community College, on November 14th. A twelfth minute goal by Romario Hulea was all the Sharks needed to

As a player, Vertullo played in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), for the North Babylon Bulldogs and Massapequa TNT. Frank also competed for three years on the LIJSL Select Team and two years on the Eastern New York ODP. Vertullo played at Dowling College from 1997 to 2000 and was Conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference three

times, captain of the team for three seasons and starting center back. He also played for the New York Freedoms of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 2002 and 2003. Vertullo served as Dowling’s assistant coach from 2001 to 2006, helping lead the Golden Lions to four NCAA Division 2 Final Fours and the 2006 National Championship. Vertullo took over the Suffolk Community College men’s program in 2007 and has led the Sharks to five Region XV titles and two National Championships, been honored as Region XV Coach of the Year four times and NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2010. Vertullo also won the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NYMISOA) Sportsmanship Award in 2008.

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has named Suffolk Community College Men’s Soccer Coach Frank Vertullo as its Personality of the Month for December. Vertullo, 34, of Babylon, coached the Suffolk County Community College Sharks to the National Championship

Former patient, 4 yearold Bobby Volk, who came through the Pediatric Emergency Department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital in September and needed emergency surgery, presented a giant check to Dr. Richard Scriven, a pediatric surgeon, today in the lobby of Stony Brook Medicine. Weeks after a successful surgery and very positive experience at Stony Brook

Children’s, Bobby was watching a television show and the episode was about a bake sale. He asked his mother if he could have a bake sale. After questioning him, he said he wanted to have one for Dr. Scriven, his team, and all the other children at Stony Brook, stating that “they need stuff.” Bobby and his mom Andrea baked cookies and brownies; Bobby packed

up his wagon, and sold the goodies to people at his mother’s job. In the end, Bobby raised almost $300! Bobby, along with his parents, joined Dr. Scriven and members of Stony Brook Medicine to show their gratitude to the hospital and presented a check which will be contributed to the Children’s Hospital and the Child Life Program.

My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle hints that may have been dropped throughout the year. These are generally few and far between.

The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of

DISNEY WORLD Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks. The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do. You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. The Child Care Council of Suffolk, Inc. (CCCS) recently held its Champions of Children 29th Anniversary Luncheon at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. The event honored two Long Island champions: New York State Assemblyman Robert K. Sweeney and John A. Rizzo, economist, the Long Island Association, and professor of Economics, Stony Brook University.

“We are grateful to all our Champions of Children attendees. The proceeds from this event help support our vital programs and services for children, child care providers and the community,” stated Janet Walerstein, CCCS executive director. “By offering child care providers educational and technical assistance, connecting parents with child care options, and through empowering and enlightening members

Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.

There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Nearly a dozen Suffolk County Community College Culinary program students will jump out of the frying pan into the fire to compete in a Choppedlike culinary competition in which students will receive a mystery basket of ingredients and must turn them into a mouthwatering dish. The competition is similar to the popular reality television show “Chopped” airing on the Food

Network. The judges -- five of Suffolk’s faculty chefs -will evaluate each student’s creation on creativity, presentation and taste. The public is invited to witness the student chefs in action. Will the chefs be as cool as a cucumber? Can they cut the mustard? Who will bring home the bacon? Stay tuned! The top chef will win a seven-night stay at the

Sheraton Clearwater Beach Resort in Clearwater, Fla., and an opportunity to work under the supervision of the resort’s executive chef. The contest’s “Battle for the Beach” prize also includes round-trip airfare and ground transportation. On Sunday afternoon, November 23rd the SYAG junior division ‘Oregon Ducks’ football team completed an undefeated season of competition by defeating the ‘Avengers’ in the annual ‘Super Bowl’ championship game. The Sachem Youth Advisory Group (SYAG) ‘Super Bowl’ Championship game was played on the beautiful artificial turf field at Sachem East High School. Stating Facts The historical importance and key facts about each of the nation’s 50 states were on display at Blue Point Elementary School’s fifth-grade “state fair.” Leading up to the

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports

(NAPSI)—The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. Spreading good cheer during the holiday season has taken on new meaning for Suffolk County Community College student Evan Feliciano, 21,

of Hauppauge, who created a unique way to pass forward the good tidings of the season all year round. “I think it’s important to spread kindness and get a chain reaction going,” said Feliciano, who attends classes on the college’s Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood. Feliciano created S.H.A.R.K! cards to help his mini on-campus movement that he hopes to spread to Suffolk’s two other campuses. The card’s name, a take-off on the College’s athletics teams’

Spreading Good Cheer name - is an acronym for “Students Here Are Really Kind” - and Feliciano and a team of helpers pass the cards out whenever they see students or campus visitors being nice to one another. Feliciano and his friends, in turn, encourage the card recipients to likewise pass the card along if the holder witnesses a good deed. “So far, it has been received very well,” Feliciano said. “I hope I can spread it to our other campuses.”

On Friday, December 19th, all four JVC Broadcasting radio stations will broadcast live from Brookhaven Town Hall to promote the Town’s INTERFACE Toy Drive. All the popular on-air personalities from My Country 96.1, LI News Radio, Party 105 and LaFiesta will be broadcasting from the lobby of Town Hall. Last year, residents donated thousands of toys ranging from stuffed animals, board games, dolls, toy trucks and bicycles. The event runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is open to the public and those who stop by are asked

to donate a new unwrapped toy to help bring joy to a family in need. Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “Thanks to our Youth Bureau, JVC Broadcasting and the generous residents of Brookhaven Town, so many children will enjoy a Merry Christmas this year. Two families who’ve worked tirelessly to provide the best lives for their families have brand new homes in time for the holidays, thanks to Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk. At the age of 20, Kimberly Butler joined the U.S. Army. She has dedicated her life to giving back to the people who served alongside her. She now works as a jobs coordinator for the United Veterans Beacon House, assisting homeless veterans with locating employment. Throughout the years, Butler has found temporary housing for her daughter and herself, but as Ryan entered middle school, Butler wanted to provide her with a stable, safe living environment to call home. Her partnership

with Habitat has now made this dream possible. Laura Arrington is a Dental Assistant at Moriches Dental, and she attends Suffolk Community College, where she’s taking prerequisites for the nursing program. Philip Jackson is a glazier for Moriches Glass, and attends Briarcliffe College for his Bachelor’s in Business Administration. They care for their 12 yearold year old son Philip and 12 year-old nephew Kyren. Laura and Philip’s first residence was a room in Riverhead. Gradually, they moved to an apartment of their own. Now, thanks to their hard work and Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk they have a new place to call home. Both houses were

dedicated in Mastic Beach on November 26th, just in time for Thanksgiving dinner and during the ceremony Habitat volunteers and staff, and major sponsors of the home Brookhaven Science Associates, National Grid and Bank of America joined the families for the key presentation. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s goal is to build an average of 12-15 houses annually, building for as long as needed to make sure every family in Suffolk County has a simple, decent and affordable place to live and call home. as decorations on the Hospital’s holiday tree in the main entrance before being distributed to those in need through Infant Jesus RC Church, Long Island Cares and the Salvation Army. The hospital will also collect NEW plush toys for distribution to pediatric patients in Mather’s Ambulatory Surgery

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $2,500 grant from The Laura B. Vogler Foundation, Inc. for the Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) program. “Through these funds, LICADD can continue to expand and enhance prevention program that helps children build core social competencies, refusal skills and protective factors relating to tobacco and other drug use during their critical formative educational years.” says Executive Director Steve Chassman.
