Shelters Need You r Help
I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. “To be remembered is to live forever.” Librarian Janet Eagan echoed this sentiment as she opened the Connetquot Public Library’s 40th Anniversary celebration, “40 and Fabulous.” The day was designed to honor not only the history of the library, but the community that brings it to life. Throughout the year, Janet Eagan and Librarian Diane Haberstroh conducted interviews with longtime local residents, creating a “Memory Lane” of lasting reflections. Guests were treated to excerpts of interviews chronicling the early life of district members and the places they call home, from the rich Czech influence in Bohemia where poultry farming and mushroom picking were ways of life, to the formation of the Czechoslovak Society of America Hall. Landmark establishment Chateau La Boheme, a former speakeasy’s transformation to the Normandie Inn,
and the delicious delights of family-owned Cerny’s Bakery, were all staples of life in Bohemia. Infamous character and centenarian Charlie Miller lived a legendary life as the owner of Bronco Charlie’s in Oakdale. Frederick Bourne, a selfmade millionaire, called this hamlet home, which eventually became the location of the LaSalle Military Academy. Arthur Premm and John Pearl’s dedication to education have left an indelible mark in the Connetquot district. Add the trails and treasures of Byron Lake Park, Connetquot State Park and Lake Ronkonkoma to create the foundation on which this community proudly rests. These places and individuals were vital to growth, evolution and the realization of lasting change. Their history prevails through the preservation of their stories, whether fact or folklore, truth or tale. Many
thanks to those residents who so generously shared their time and a slice of their lives to create an enduring and permanent legacy: Stephen Birkeland, Richard Buonocore, Marie Cantella, Stephen Carlisle, Anthony DeSimone, Lawrence Hinkson, Raymond Lindsey, Lorraine Mays, Rhoda McManus, Judy Pedneault, Sandra and Sherman Robinson Gloria Rysanek, Philip Selvaggio, Edward Surbeck, Edwin Taylor, Vincent Vaughn and Richard Wolfe. Library Director Kimberly DeCristofaro spoke about her own experience as a young child when the library was just beginning. She offered her thanks to all who have made the library the success it is today. Original board member and retired educator, Susan Fufaro, detailed the idyllic life of sweeping pastures and endless possibilities that marked her childhood in Oakdale. In 1963, the Suffolk

40 and Fabulous County Library System offered a bookmobile, which made stops in Oakdale, Bohemia and Ronkonkoma, where residents could borrow books. As the task of providing materials grew, residents had the option to join other libraries by paying a membership fee. It was time the district had a library of its own. Susan spoke about its formation from the distribution of fliers to the October 16th, 1974 vote establishing a public library. With its five founding Board Members, James Bunting, Eileen MacArthur and John Randazzo, along with Robert Dennis and Susan, who, at present, still serve today, the dream became a reality. Susan gave recognition to the board members, past and present, dedicated employees and, most importantly, to the community the library serves. Four decades of expansion, as well as social and technological change,
create an exciting and vital resource to be shared by all who enter through its doors. “It was good to walk into a library again; it smelled like home,” said Elizabeth Kostova. The latter part of the program continued with the deejay playing Kool and The Gang’s “Celebration,” a word that culminates a yearlong commemoration of the Connetquot Public Library. Celebrating a decade where the glitter of a disco ball and lava lamp illuminated the night, where music and film discovered its edge, and platform shoes and paisley dressed a generation, it marked a “pivot of change.” It is a decade when the library gave a generation and the generations to come a voice, a place to be heard, a place called home. Dance instructor Barry Masten invited guests to the dance floor, as the deejay spun the anthems of youth. Barry demonstrated the Hustle and Freestyle, as well as performed some
solo magical dance moves and a few with his talented dance partner, Stephanie Watt. Lost in the magic of the moment, time froze, as people shared memories, and moments were relived and recaptured. Pet rocks and vibrant attire were celebrated and rewarded. It was a community gathered, carefree and reflecting upon the past and looking toward the future. It is difficult to imagine how a small trailer could evolve into the large “community center” that exists today. Understanding the resolve of a community to establish a place with an “enrich your mind, explore your world” ideal, it becomes a beacon where hope resides and all things are possible. “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.” ~ William Shakespeare.

Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own
name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,
include playing video games and streaming on Twitch. Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good. After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. I recently came upon a column I wrote just about a decade ago for this very space, detailing that strange phenomenon that occurs around this time of year – the annual appearance of the species known as “the male shopper.” Following is an excerpt… Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes.

A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip
to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.
Talent, indeed. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. A column for the ages.

The Honorable Patricia K. Romeo of Patchogue Village presided over the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center (BAC) @ PatchogueMedford High School Student Council Induction Ceremony. Romeo swore in members and officers at a ceremony held in the school’s auditorium, saying, “It was a great honor.” Student Advisor Patricia Rizzi said, “We were grateful to have Judge Romeo swear the students in again this year. She is an inspiration to all of them.”
Romeo is the first woman justice in the village and as a long-time resident of Patchogue is committed to serving her community. The ESBOCES Student Council is also committed to serving the community, engaging in several projects throughout the school year. The council’s motto is, “Making a better tomorrow, today!” “The motto is a guiding tool for the students,” said Rizzi. For the past several years, council members have sold pink and white cookies, donating the

“Too often we hear in the news about student athletes behaving badly, so it is quite a breath of fresh air to witness something truly heartwarming here at Sayville High School,” remarked Sayville Speech Teacher Angela O’Hoppe. “It is a feel-good story that leaves me smiling every time I think about when I leave the building each day.” Since the beginning of the school year, a student with special needs has been participating in an afterschool physical activity. Along with his aide, he has been walking the track surrounding the football field before going home. “Jacob, for the entire football season, has interacted with members of the football team before, during, and after his walk around the track.” Ms. O’Hoppe continued. “Each day, Jacob instructs the boys to ‘line up!’ Immediately, the squad stands shoulder-to-shoulder, with their hands on their hearts, and sings the National Anthem with Jacob. When the song is over, they burst into applause and Jacob turns beet red with delight. This ritual that takes place every Monday through Thursday at our school is a shining example of our mission.” And Ms. O’Hoppe should know. As an adviser for the Sayville Flashes Leadership Club, it has been her goal to encourage students at the high school to be confident and kind by extending compassion to others when no one is looking. “I told the boys they make me very proud to work and live here.” Although technically not part of the team, Jacob

The breakfast, hosted by the Sayville Booster Club and held at the Sayville Fire Department, has been a longstanding tradition. This year, however, Football Booster Club parent Michelle Galante thought Jacob’s presence would be a welcomed addition, especially because Jacob and the Football team had formed a bond of friendship

It was this companionship, born from such a kind, spontaneous gesture “when no one was looking” that not only demonstrated the fine character of the team players, but touched so many people when the word about their uplifting routine spread. Following the breakfast, the team headed over to Stony Brook University for the Suffolk County Championships, and Jacob with his family joined them. “After winning the title of Suffolk County Championship,” Mrs. Galante explained. “Our boys recognized Jacob, proudly wearing his Sayville Football sweatshirt in the stands. They immediately removed their helmets, faced toward Jacob and broke out in unison to sing once again The Star Spangled Banner. “These boys,” Mrs. Galante added, “are amazing young men, and we are so proud of them both on and off the field.” Jacob’s mother Alice expressed how impressed she was “by these boys, both on and off the field. Immediately after they won, they sang the National Anthem with Jacob,” adding the quote, “No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.” After the Long Island Championship game on Sunday, November 29th, at Stony Brook, where the Golden Flashes set new records and won the Class III title with a score of 59-15 against Plainedge, the Champs proudly joined one last time in song with Jacob, proving they are winners where it counts the most - in their hearts.

This year’s staging of the Nutcracker is again scheduled for six performances: December 18th through 21st at Stony Brook University’s Staller Center for the Arts. This classical ballet rendition has earned praise from critics and audiences alike. The cast will be led by
guest artist Nick Coppula (Cavalier) formerly with the Pittsburgh Ballet plus Seiskaya’s award winning principal dancer Alexandra Palma with 1st soloists Jenna Lee, Natasha Butkevich, Diana Atoian, Brianna Jimenez, Madison Mursch and Jamie Bergold. The company’s 2015 Nutcracker season should again garner praise. The Seiskaya Ballet’s

Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 17th year. This drive will run until December 18th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations.
