Connetquot Boys’ Basketball Season Opens With Exciting Confrontation With Sachem

Connetquot High School boys’ varsity basketball coach Kyle Black had been looking forward to the team’s 2021 home opener on November 30th against crosstown rival Sachem HS. So many fans were looking forward to watching the T-birds in action, live, for the first time in over a year, and weren’t disappointed by the team’s outstanding effort. Connetquot exchanged leads with the visitors throughout the first half, but fell short in the second taking the 56-41 loss confident that they will improve and work towards their potential

Tuesday, November 23, 2021 was a pretty busy day in the district for Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa. Due to the overwhelming response to his holiday food drive, he delivered many of the proceeds to Pastor Hank Kistler at Connect Church, located at 31 Horseblock Road in Centereach. Connect Church passed the food along to needy families. Legislator Caracappa

also visited an historic Revolutionary site in Coram, referred to as the “Burning of the Hay.” On November 23, 1780, Major Benjamin Tallmadge and approximately 80 of his revolutionary patriots burnt 300 tons of hay in Coram to deny the British that essential winter staple. Caracappa went to the location to pay tribute to this daring act of bravery. “I love how our community played a

significant role in the United States’ success in the Revolutionary War,” stated Legislator Caracappa. More importantly, I am so proud that our modern day community looks out for those in need, and really showed an outpouring of generosity with the many food donations my office received. I am truly fortunate to live in and serve the people of the Fourth Legislative District.”

Connetquot Students Winners In Fire Poster Contest Idle Hour Elementary School students Ethan Stuart from Claire Bancroft’s kindergarten class and Valentina Miller from Stephanie Zelinski’s first grade class were

winners in the West Sayville Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Poster Contest. The contest required participants to create an 8x11 inch poster of one of

the many fire safety and prevention rules. Each of the winners received a certificate and a $25 Amazon gift card from the fire department.

Outstanding Educators, to be held in November. This annual event highlights the legacy and accomplishments of St. Joseph’s College alumni in several categories, including the Rising Star Award that celebrates educators who have been teaching or working in education for less than three academic years. According to the

Teacher Celebrated As A Rising Star description of the award, educators like Ms. Onorato are making a striking impact during the early stages of their teaching careers and are displaying effective leadership, classroom innovation, collaboration efforts and creativity in the classroom that assists students in succeeding.

Connetquot Students Reach Out For The Holidays

Connetquot High School students reached out to the community in a number of ways this Thanksgiving, making the holiday special for struggling community families. The Interact Club, in conjunction with the Connetquot Teachers’ Union, held a coat drive throughout the month of November. Many Town of Islip residents will stay

warm due to the generosity of donors. The Helping Hands Club also collected food and assembled Thanksgiving baskets for community families in need. They also crafted handmade cards to accompany each basket, spreading cheer during the holiday. Additionally, the Ronkonkoma Middle School Peer Leaders

and Student Council collected food for local families at Options for Community Living in Ronkonkoma. Thanks to the students and with the help of the Connetquot Teachers’ Union and faculty donations, baskets with a full Thanksgiving meal were gifted to those families in need. Academy Street LEAP And Peer Buddies Celebrate The Holiday

Academy Street Elementary School Peer Buddies gathered in the school cafeteria with students enrolled in the Life and Educational Achievement Program for a fun-filled afternoon Thanksgiving feast and celebration. Under the direction of special education teacher Meredith Breen and school psychologist Samantha Demeusy, the students paired up for one of several meetings of the school year.

Ms. Breen explained that the fourth and fifth grade Peer Buddies meet monthly with the LEAP students to host centers, games and crafts. This first meeting of the school year was an opportunity to host holiday-themed activities, including a Thanksgiving food-tasting center. The students tasted and rated how well they enjoyed pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce and apple sauce. They also made construction paper turkeys based on instructions from

a kit and played a sorting game. Peer Buddy Jace Black, a fifth grader, said he joined the organization because he wants to help others. “I want to help others with their education,” he said. Meanwhile, Meaghan Needelman, also a Peer Buddy said, “I like the LEAP kids and just want to help them.” After the activities, the students gathered for a group photo to remind them of a fun day of working together.

North Science Students Lend Their Skills To Environmental Research The Sachem High School North Science National Honor Society recently went on a field trip to Sunken Meadow State Park to participate in “A Day in the Life of the Nissequogue River” as part of the “Day in the Life” program sponsored by Brookhaven National Laboratory, the Long Island Pine Barrens Commission and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The collaborative effort partners school groups with environmental science professionals to collect data at multiple

locations throughout an aquatic ecosystem to get an overview of the health of that watershed. As part of the trip, students from 10 different schools sampled various locations along the Nissequogue River. They collected water chemistry data, seined for fish, conducted a terrestrial wildlife survey, took soil samples and analyzed surrounding land use. In the coming weeks, students will collaborate with these other groups and agency professionals to upload, share and analyze data for the entire Nissequogue River system.

The specific site the students visited, Sunken Meadow Creek, a tributary of the Nissequogue, is the product of a longterm estuary restoration project. In the past, Sachem North students have aided in the restoration project by helping plant salt marsh plants and participating in longterm habitat monitoring and data collection with environmental science nonprofit and government professionals to document positive changes there for over 10 years.

United Way Of Long Island Awarded $1M Hud Grant To Help Low-Income Elderly Homeowners Age In Place United Way of Long Island has been awarded a $1 million Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Older Adults Home Modification Grant Program (OAHMP). Funds will be applied to make safety and functional home modifications and limited repairs to meet the needs of low-income elderly homeowners that allow them to age in place. Long Island’s population is continuing to age; according to 2019 U.S. Census population estimates, there are more than 300,000 Long Islanders 65 years of age or older. The number of residents age 70 and older in Nassau and Suffolk counties is expected to increase by more than 220,000 over 25 years, according to Northwell Health. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates falls are the leading cause of injury and death in older Americans, making the program even more essential. Stay at home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic shed light on housing conditions that put health and safety at risk. This program is designed to help prevent Long Island seniors unnecessary hospitalizations and/or skilled nursing facility admissions. “Seniors across Long Island have made their desire to live in their own homes resoundingly clear, which is why the work that United Way of Long Island does is so vital,” said U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer. “I was proud to support United Way’s federal funding application for their Safe At Home For Seniors program. $1 million is now on its way to help hundreds of seniors across Long Island with repairs and modifications to their homes so they can age in place and in dignity, and I will continue to advocate for a federal investment in home and community-based services.” The delivery of the HUD OAHMP grant requires a home assessment by a licensed occupational therapist (OT). United Way’s

community partners, along with the OT’s will help identify the repairs most critically needed for seniors to facilitate aging in place. The types of repairs to these homes will include bathroom renovations (i.e. installing no-slip strips, grab bars, transfer benches) and accessibility features (i.e. lever handles on all doors and faucets, handheld shower heads, wheelchair ramps). “There has never been a more important time than now to ensure the safety of our senior citizens when living independently at home,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “Small changes in seniors’ homes can make a huge difference in their lives. This HUD modification program will enhance United Way’s already existing Safe at Home for Seniors program allowing our elderly neighbors to safely age in place.” Since 1995, United Way’s Housing Division has provided healthy home and accessibility modifications to older adults, veterans, and people with disabilities to help them remain safe, healthy and independent in their homes and communities for as long

To qualify, residents must live in and own private residences and be at least 62 years old and reside in Brentwood, Central Islip, City of Glen Cove, City of Long Beach, Huntington Station, North Bellport, Riverhead, Village

of Hempstead or Wyandanch. United Way of Long Island also seeks to provide health and social services to older residents, helping them age in their homes. Troops sometimes find themselves needing support services provided by the United Service Organizations (USO). To boost morale for American service members all around the globe, the USO is meeting them where they are. “The heart of our mission is to ensure service members stay strong through connecting them to the things they love and fight for,” says Christopher Plamp, senior vice president

of operations, programs, and entertainment at the USO. “When the pandemic prevented us from serving in person as we have done for over our 80-year history, we innovated new ways to virtually foster the spirit of connectedness. As we look forward to a postpandemic future, we are proud to continue strengthening the military – no matter the time or place.” Here are a few ways the USO brings vital morale and essential services directly to the nation’s military in far-reaching corners of the world: • For military units stationed in distant locations where there is no USO presence, USO2GO packages bridge the gap. In 2020, USO2GO was heavily utilized to support quarantine sites for service members at military

These units also help serve the National Guard in times of natural disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, tornados and more. Equipped with food preparation areas, Wi-Fi, TVs, relaxation areas, gaming stations and outdoor activities, these USO centers on wheels are a welcoming haven for military members in hard-to-reach areas. • Virtual and inperson entertainment reconnects service members to experiences and memories of home. Since April 2020, USO Military Virtual Programming (MVP) entertainment programs have hosted 135 sessions with more than 170

entertainers. MVP events reached 49 countries, including 22 ships at sea and 52 U.S. states and territories. Attendees engaged with celebrities via live Q&A sessions, performances, oneon-one calls and more than 140 live “look-ins” at military locations. • The USO Care Package Program provides service members with two different types of care packages: Snack Packs and Toiletry Packs. These care packages give busy troops a needed boost. In November 2020, the 3 millionth care package since 9/11 was delivered to a service member stationed in East Africa.
