Continued From 4 January 31st. The 2018 firearms deer season in Suffolk County will begin Sunday, January 7th and continue until January 31st, including weekends. Town permits are now only required in the Towns of Southampton, Islip and Smithtown. DEC regulations require that lands eligible for firearms deer hunting must be at least 10 acres in size, and hunters must possess a valid big game hunting license, a signed landowners endorsement, and a town permit where required. Deer may be taken only by: · Shotgun, using a single ball or slug; · Muzzleloading rifle or pistol, shooting a single projectile having a minimum bore of 0.44 inches. Shotgun barrels may be rifled, and telescopic sights may be used. Crossbows are not a legal hunting instrument in Suffolk County. Hunters should check with local towns and villages to determine any local restrictions or discharge ordinances. Hunters who wish to hunt on statemanaged lands in Suffolk County will be able to take advantage of the expanded special firearms deer season as well the extended archery season. The Child Care Council of Suffolk (CCCS) will host a Professional Development Day program on Saturday, December 16th, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the HYATT Regency in Hauppauge. This free program will be presented by the agency’s registration and education departments to provide training, support and resources to registered child care providers and their support staff. “While child care ranks among Long Island’s largest industries – bringing billions of dollars into our local economy – it falls far below other industries in terms of financial profitability for the individuals who serve the Island’s working parents,” stated CCCS Executive Director Janet Walerstein. “It is therefore vitally important for the Child Care Council of

Suffolk to offer this special day of recognition to inspire, uplift, revitalize and empower those individuals who dedicate their time to Long Island’s children and working parents who collectively earn more than $10.6 billion annually.” The Professional Development Day will be highlighted by a keynote speech from Jeanine Fitzgerald of Hubbardston, Massachusetts, titled: “Don’t Pop Your Cork.” A certified Human Behavior Consultant and Specialist and Owner of The Fitzgerald Institute of Lifelong Learning, Fitzgerald specializes in research-based strategies in educational leadership, relationship-building, motivation, preventing the factors that compromise the fulfillment of a child’s maximum potential and

HARMONY CAFÉ!

Harmony Café is one of more than 60 community cafés in America and abroad with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, affordable and delicious meals to all who walk through their door. They are a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. Their philosophy is that everyone, regardless of economic status, deserves the chance to eat healthy food while being treated with dignity. When one enters the Harmony Café, there is a suggested donation of $10 to dine and enjoy the entertainment provided. Guests can pay the suggested donation, pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a fresh meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. I recently met with Rosemarie McCarthy, Director and Founder of Long Island’s first community café, Harmony Café. She stressed the importance of not only feeding one’s stomach, but feeding their soul as well. At Harmony Café, each meal is offered over 2 ½ hours and is always accompanied with live music. Rosemarie mentioned that, “There is a great need to have social connections; it is essential to one’s overall health and well-being.” Therefore, she spotlights the importance of engaging in conversation with one another at her events. The business model for these types of cafés isn’t one that is easy to get off the ground; therefore, as of now, Harmony

Café only offers one 2 ½ hour event - a fresh meal and entertainment - on the second Wednesday of each month. Harmony Café currently operates out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, Rosemarie has a goal for Harmony Café to have a storefront in the Patchogue area that will be open five days a week for lunch and dinner. The following volunteer positions are needed: event planning committee volunteers; a volunteer coordinator assistant; servers and kitchen help volunteers; community advocate/ outreach volunteers; and, most importantly, she needs volunteers to help fundraise, and volunteer board members (passionate people who can give a minimum of 10 hours a month to help plan ahead and discuss the organization’s needs and wants). Rosemarie mentioned that she values passion over experience in these areas because experience can always be gained! Sponsors are needed to help support the mission of Harmony Café by helping to fund each event and, in return, they will have their business promoted by the Café. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program has received a grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation to enable the program to provide information about breast reconstruction. The funds will be used to create bilingual educational materials in print and online. Two bilingual social workers regularly meet with breast cancer patients at the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) Breast and/or Oncology Clinic and address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Move It for the Military In honor of the connection several Woodhull Elementary School students and staff members have to the military – in particular the local Coast Guard station – the Fire Island school community came together to participate in an interactive weeklong initiative called “Move it! for Military Kids.” The initiative, which was created two years ago by the Military Child Education

Coalition, invited participants to engage in a physical activity of some kind and to raise awareness of the plight of children in military families, who often deal with moving, separation and other transitions related to their parents’ service. Throughout the week, all Woodhull class participated in a variety of activities including, top 10 favorite PE activities, yoga with the principal, a nature

walk, a disco dance party and a hula hoop contest. This year’s event was once again coordinated by Fire Island’s Director of Health Services Janet LaViolette, who thought of the many students from the Babylon Coast Guard base that have attended Woodhull over the years. Woodhull is proud of its Coast Guard students and families and thanks them for their sacrifices. STATE CHAMPS - Congratulations to the Connetquot High School Girls Volleyball team from Islip Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. She joined Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and New York State Senator Phil Boyle to wish the girls good luck as they departed for their competition. They came back New York State champions.

They talked about the necessary supplies and equipment, the market for each method, and how the service can drive sales for salons. The Fashion Merchandising students at the Long Island Academy helped to bring attention to America Recycles Day on November 15th, which was created to raise awareness about recycling and purchasing recycled products. Students worked in partnership with Savers in Holbrook to “upcycle,” or compose innovative fashions by repurposing pieces from many garments found at the store. The Fashion Merchandising class is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES.

Extension Workshop

Read to Feed Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District connected literacy and learning during a recent community service initiative – the Read to Feed food drive. The initiative, which benefited the Sachem Food Pantry located at

Sachem High School North, works through a pledge system. For every 75 minutes of reading accomplished outside of school, a friend or family member donated a food item to the participating classes. Throughout the drive the students watched the donations

add up, as colored feathers representing the classes were added to a turkeythemed bulletin board. In addition to the literary connections, the drive also incorporated mathematics, as students tracked all weekly donations and used the data to graph their progress.

Display of Knowledge Students enrolled in Patrick Brennan’s and Tracy McIntyre’s fourthgrade classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently displayed their vast knowledge of the Iroquois people, as they invited family and friends into the school’s atrium for a Native American Museum event. The project came as a conclusion to the students’ classroom lessons on the

Iroquois tribe, covering important topics such as hunting and gathering techniques, the most common forms of shelter and family lineage facts. With their immense knowledge of the tribe on hand, the students chose one particular aspect of Iroquois culture and wrote a detailed report on it and created artistic representations of their topic. Some of the incredible displays of art

included representations of hunting traps, comprehensive longhouses and wigwams, tomahawks, fishing poles and even a Haudenosaunee version of a lacrosse stick. The invited guests enjoyed walking around the room, asking the students about their chosen project and learning important historical facts along the way.

Escape Room As an effort to raise funds for their club and promote mathematical learning, the Connetquot High School Mathematics Honor Society (Mu Alpha Theta), along with adviser Chris Dolce, recently turned the Connetquot High School library into an Escape Room Game,

inviting students to utilize their mathematical logic to “escape” the room within the allotted time frame. Multiple teams worked collaboratively throughout the day to solve the puzzles and find the secret map in under an hour. The top time was 39 minutes and 16 seconds, achieved

by students Athena Roopnarine, Dominick Katrivanos, Chris Battista, Kaitlyn Iocca and Matthew Lopez. Due to the combined efforts of students, $500 was raised to directly benefit the Mathematics Honor Society.

Two Merrimac Elementary School siblings in the Sachem Central School District went above and beyond as they organized a kickball tournament aimed at collecting nonperishable food items and cleaning supplies to donate to the nonprofit organization Island Harvest, benefiting those affected by the devastating hurricanes Harvey and Irma. As part of the Leader in Me program, third-grade student Gabriel Nagel and fifth-grader Sarah Nagel organized the engaging benefit to involve all students of Merrimac Elementary by creating friendly competition amongst classes. With help from gym teachers Robert Romano and Nicole Kessinger, the drive was arranged so that every two days each class’ donations would be tallied to arrive at that class’ total score.

Adding an interesting twist to the drive, the inclusion of cleaning supplies as bonus items counted as 15 points added to the class totals. During each gym class throughout the week, every point scored by students during the kickball games was added to their overall totals. The Leader in Me is a program that provides students the opportunity to organize a service learning project that will contribute to the community. Each proposed project is presented to students and staff before implementation. The student duo worked together to create flyers and announcements to promote the Kicking for a Cause drive throughout the building. The fundraiser provided students across all grade levels an opportunity to synergize and work toward a common goal while having fun.

“With the Leader in Me program our students have developed valuable skills such as leadership, communication, empathy and teamwork, all of which have contributed to a school culture that values project-based learning, goal setting and critical thinking,” said Merrimac Principal Veronica DeCicco. “All of the students learned a valuable lesson about contributing as a community.” As a result of the school’s generosity, hundreds of items were donated to the cause. At the conclusion of the drive, Michelle Nelson’s kindergarten class, Peter Gentzlinger’s firstgrade class and Lorraine Alvarez’s fifth-grade class were presented with trophies donated by Port Jefferson Sporting Goods to be displayed in their classrooms as the three winning classes.

Great Feats The Connetquot Central School District would like to congratulate Connetquot High School student-athlete Marina Duszak on being presented with the Ronan Guyer Memorial Scholarship on behalf of the County Cross Country Coaches Association. The award is named in honor of Ronan Guyer, who competed for the Southold High School cross-country team and passed away in 2012. It honors his memory, as it recognizes the courage of the male and female studentathlete whose personal

characteristics of courage, kindness, generosity and service to the community are reflected strongly. “Marina is a four-year member of the crosscountry team, Student Government president, ranks in the top 10 percent of her class, works part time as a Starbucks barista, is the leader of Connetquot’s largest fundraising program and is a cancer survivor,” said Connetquot High School girls cross-country coach Michael Austin. “We are all extremely proud of her.” Marina Duszak has continuously worked to

maintain her elite running status, even after enduring treatment for leukemia. Since beating her disease, Marina holds a steady pace runing a 21-minute 5K. Beyond the world of athletics, she organized a highly successful “Give Back” Chinese auction for the past two years that has raised close to $50,000, which supports the MakeA-Wish Foundation. In addition to receiving the Ronan Guyer Memorial Scholarship, Marina also recently acquired the Student of the Month Certificate courtesy of the Sayville Rotary Club.

The Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce kicked off the 2017 holiday season with its 11th annual Miracle on Main Street, an all-day celebration that began with a morning parade. The festivities occurred in conjunction with Small Business Saturday, and featured kid-friendly

activities for children within the “Winter Wonderland” theme, which included gingerbread house competitions, ice sculptures, a carousel, live performances, a gingerbread bounce, Santa meet and greet, and everyone’s favorite, the tree-lighting ceremony. The Chamber of

Commerce of Greater Bay Shore kicked-off their holiday season on Small Business Saturday, with a Winter Festival featuring music, treats, visits from Santa and Frosty, along with the lighting of the Christmas tree and Menorah located on Main Street in Bay Shore.

Spirit of the Season And later that night, as the team buses returned to the streets of Lindy, they were met by hundreds of proud community members lining the route, stretching from town hall all the way to the high school. What a wonderful sight to behold, to witness an entire town rally behind a team, an organization, a common cause. I imagine many towns across Long Island have experienced this at one time or another; it is this type of camaraderie which forges a connection that cannot be broken. Years later, residents will remember moments like these, and pass them along to their children and grandchildren. Perhaps this particular occasion was made all the more special coming as it did at the start of the holiday season, providing an added element to an already-festive atmosphere. What began

as a mere dream back in September turned into victory parades through town and more recognition than any individual could have ever hoped to receive. Even still, it remains a team victory; no man above the rest, all united in their Lindy Pride. Browsing through some of the many videos shared on social media following the victory, I came across one that appeared to be posted immediately following, taken during the post-game meeting of coaches and players. As the head coach praised the outstanding accomplishments of the season, he made sure to mention the town, the people, the community they all called home - without them, he said, none of this would have been possible. And that, in the end, is the most humbling achievement of all. Seventeen years later, I remain a proud Bulldog. Always.

I have not been a student of the Lindenhurst school district since 2000; but, come every Homecoming, I am there - along the parade route, in the stands, on the sidelines - snapping pictures for this very paper and cheering on the home team with the rest of the crowd, many of them fellow alumni. And last weekend, I was among the thousands who tuned in to watch the Lindy Bulldogs defeat the Oceanside Sailors in the Long Island Tournament - Division I Final, following their perfect 12-0 season. What a proud moment it was, to see this team go all the way for the very first time in their storied history, supported by their throng of loyal fans.
