A Conversation with “The Conners” Star Lecy Goranson By Allison Kugel

Allison Kugel: When you stepped off the Roseanne set for the last time in 1997, did you ever think that you’d be playing Becky Conner again all these years later? Lecy Goranson: No (laughs), I didn’t! Being back has made me realize the time I missed when I was away. It’s an interesting feeling that hit me, that the show continued on without me [back then]. Everyone was still together after I left. I had a lot of mixed feelings about it. Not regret, but I thought, “Wow. I really love these people and I made a move, but it’s been such a blessing to be reconnected with everyone.”

Lecy Goranson: I never really had a chance to talk to her until we were on Amy Shumer together. We went out to dinner and it was really interesting to hear what she had to say, which was a lot! Anyone who gets a job like that, it’s very exciting, especially if you’re

Allison Kugel: I’ve heard you say in several interviews that you left the original Roseanne during the height of its success to have a normal college experience. I have to ask, what prompted you to become a child star in the first place? Lecy Goranson: I was a dancer, and there’s a place in Evanston, Illinois called the Noise Cultural Arts Center where they have dance, acting, painting and different classes in the arts. I was taking dance classes. Right down the hall was the Piven Theatre Workshop, started by Burt and Joyce Piven who were coming from Second City Comedy Troupe. I started taking classes there and Burt and Joyce were affiliated with a [talent] agency in downtown Chicago. They asked me to go on a couple of open calls. My parents wanted me to be involved in activities because they were working a lot. So that was the

amount of their vested interest, just to keep me busy and productive. I did two auditions and the second one was for Roseanne. I think they hired Laurie Metcalf, who was also from Chicago, and me, because they wanted to have some actors that were actually from the Chicago area to give the show that flavor. But yeah, it was a total fluke. Allison Kugel: Now it makes sense to me that you would one day, as a teenager, realize you wanted to step away and just be a college student. Lecy Goranson: Yes. But after college I had to say to myself, “Look, you love being an actor and this lifestyle of suffering (laughs). This is what you really want.” It’s funny when you have to parent yourself. Allison Kugel: Twenty years later, what are you now bringing to the role of Becky Conner on The Conners? Lecy Goranson: I’ve been doing theatre for so many years. Like any skill, you build muscle by repetition. I’ve also had the privilege of working with great actors in the New York theatre community. The character of Becky is really strong, grounded and wise. It’s interesting re-approaching a character in this way, with all of my own life experiences. And I feel it when I am there; I feel my age! I’ve been around the block, but I think back to my former self as a child and I think, “Hmm, what was it like?” It’s hard for me to remember a lot of it. There is a part of youth that is so unconscious, and there’s such a beautiful thing about that in retrospect. That unconsciousness gives you a lot of bold confidence. Allison Kugel: A lot has been said about Roseanne Barr in recent months, through the media. Tell me what it was like growing up around Roseanne and John Goodman when you were a kid... Lecy Goranson: I’ve always felt really close to John. Our personalities are similar, and I have always felt very connected to him. I hate to use the term “genius,” because people throw it around, but they both do have a genius for the work. Roseanne, the way her mind would think, comically, was really advanced. And John is such an incredible actor. His genius is in being so present in every moment, and tweaking the script in his own way. He is one of the most present actors I have ever been around. The two of them together were just like a

couple of big kids, encouraging each other to go further. They were a great team, and they’d bring out the best in each other. They both loved humiliating the kids in a scene. Yes, they would get off on embarrassing us! Allison Kugel: How about your TV siblings Sarah Gilbert and Michael Fishman, who still play your sister and brother, Darlene and D.J., on The Conners? What’s the relationship like between the three of you? Lecy Goranson: I live on the east coast and they’re on the west coast. Apart from Laurie Metcalfe and John Goodman who do theatre in New York occasionally, I don’t see everybody that much. Sarah and I are very close. We spent all this time apart and then when we were reunited, I remembered how well we know each other. You can’t help but be close like that if you see each other every day for however many years, and you’re the only two young ladies on the set. Michael is just a doll. He’s turned into such a mature, loving, wonderful person. I feel a lot of pride for the fact that we have turned out pretty good. Allison Kugel: Last year, before Roseanne became The Conners, how did the reboot come together? Lecy Goranson: It had a lot to do with Sarah. I also know that Roseanne had been thinking about doing it for a long time, independently. Michael and Roseanne had been talking about it. It all came together, and Sarah took on the role of Executive Producer. When Sarah reached out to everyone, we all said, “Let’s do it.” And we’re still doing it! Allison Kugel: I love the fact that everyone was game to come on board. If you are known and beloved for playing an iconic television character that people identify with,

and you are a part of pop culture history, that’s amazing! What’s wrong with that?! Lecy Goranson: I think also the fact that, at the end of the day, our show is about a family. There is something appealing about keeping that family unit alive and revisiting them at a later time. I think we are a special show to a lot of people, and the family dynamic that we have makes it so. Allison Kugel: Why should people continue to tune in to The Conners? Lecy Goranson: Because it’s the best show on TV, of course!

Allison Kugel: You’re referring to your character Becky being re-cast with actress Sarah Chalke during the fifth season of Roseanne. There are three characters in television that were famously re-cast during the height of a show’s success. You’ve got the two Darrens from Betwitched, the two Lionels from The Jeffersons and the two Beckys from Roseanne. I’m sure you’ve talked with Sarah Chalke at length about her taking over your role all those years ago. What was it like for Sarah to step into your shoes halfway through the series’ original run?

a small-town girl from Canada, which she was. I was talking with some of the other actors about what it might feel like to be a guest star on our show. For me, I know all these people and I’ve worked with them for years, but I still feel like I really have to bring my A-game. There’s a heightened feeling of responsibility in working with such amazing people. I can only imagine how intimidating that was for her, beyond the sheer joy of having a job like that. Stepping into a character that was already established, it was challenging for her. But she stepped into an environment where there were a lot of loving people, and really talented people to help her bring her game up.

It is nothing short of a miracle. Having eyes to view a sunset, ears to hear a beautiful piece of music, legs to run and jump, arms to hug, our imaginations to create with; these are the true gifts of life. Everything else, well, everything else is advertising. The love and support of a true friend or loved one, and the camaraderie of our communities, if we allow it to, can truly bolster and propel our spirits forward. Material things are fine and can be enjoyable to experience, but balance is key. So give thought to what you hold as valuable, and ask yourself, “If there were no crowd to impress, no willing participants to applaud or express their envy, would I still find this item to be of value to my life?” While some of the things we possess are big, fast or shiny, with large pricetags attached, others are simply... priceless.

I can recall, back in 2012, reading a fascinating article about the discovery of a new planet made entirely of diamond. Can you imagine? That precious stone that Marilyn Monroe famously crooned about ala Diamonds are a girl’s best friend... and there’s a whole planet in our galaxy that’s made up of the stuff?! I laughed to myself at the time, pondering the thought, “Would diamonds have nearly the same value and prestige as they do here on earth, if we lived on a planet where the very bedrock beneath our feet was made of diamond?” I believe the answer is no. If that were the case, gifting your paramour with a diamond ring would be the equivalent of going to the nearest beach, and picking up a simple rock off the ground. It would be considered “ordinary.” You laugh, but think about it. I am not trying to belittle the value of diamonds, and there is certainly

nothing wrong with enjoying some material things. Rather, I am illustrating that what we covet is often a matter of perception and societal conditioning. Have you ever asked yourself, “What would I hold most dear in my life, if not for what I have been indoctrinated into valuing by my society or social circle?” As human beings, we tend to value things that cost great sums of money, or things that we perceive as hard to attain. The things in life that are given to us freely and easily, we often take for granted. The great irony here is that the things with large monetary price tags attached to them are largely replaceable, whereas the things we are given for free like love, friendship, good health, knowledge of oneself and the world, our imagination, and even our bodies, are not replaceable. Did you know that the price of an artificial limb can be as much as fifty thousand dollars? Unless you’ve had to be the recipient of one due to disease or an accident, I bet you’ve never concerned

A number of Connetquot High School students recently paid a visit to the Ronkonkoma Middle School Computer Club in an effort to explain the many benefits that come along with following career paths surrounding computer coding. Connetquot High School students Jack Russo, Joseph Vita and Dominick Manicone were kind enough to discuss

their experiences with computer science and coding, including the many opportunities offered at the high school level and the competitions which take place both in and out of school. Additionally, they discussed their plans for the future, and what being part of the clubs and taking classes at the high school has done to help develop their career paths thus far.

Ronkonkoma Middle School Computer Club adviser Jackie Huston, Connetquot High School Computer Club and Programming Club adviser Robert Bachisin and Connetquot Central School District Director of Mathematics Louise Burger were also on hand to answer any questions that students asked.

Displaying Their Musical Talents Student-musicians from Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently put their musical talents on full display during the school’s annual Tri-Music Honor Society Talent show held on the evening of Nov. 16. During the course of the talent show, students shone brightly as they sang, danced and played their musical instruments for their family members

and the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School staff members in attendance, including Tri-M Music Honor Society adviser Melissa Johnson. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates all of the student-participants – along with the humorous emcees who hosted the event – for contributing to a highly successful

Holiday Food Collection In recognition of the holiday season, staff and students from Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently came together to collect various food items to benefit less fortunate families of the Cherokee community. With assistance from

Youth and Family Services Coordinator Nicole Coogan and teacher’s aide Nicole Masi, the fifth-grade peer leaders were able to fill about 20 boxes to the brim with holiday essentials such as stuffing, pie crust and mashed potatoes. The school would also like to thank the teachers of Cherokee Street

Elementary for donating enough turkeys to ensure that every family has one to enjoy on Thanksgiving. Due to the generous number of holiday foods collected, all extra items are going to be donated to a local food pantry to benefit other families in need of a proper holiday meal.

Recognizing Impressive Results During the Nov. 13 Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education meeting, a number of Connetquot High School students were congratulated for achieving incredible results on several challenging examinations. More than 20 high school

students were recognized by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams for joining the “Superintendent’s 100 Club.” These students earned a perfect mark of 100 percent on one or more Regents exam. Additionally, a number of students were presented

with tokens of appreciation for receiving a grade of 100 percent on their Foreign Language Association of Chairpersons and Supervisors Checkpoint B Exams, spanning the Spanish, French and Italian languages.

Connetquot Unveiling The Connetquot Central School District recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony in honor of the highly-respected former Connetquot Board of Education member and community resident Helen R. Maloney. During the ceremony, Mrs. Maloney’s children James Maloney and Susan Stokke were joined

by dozens of district administrators, staff members, community residents and their families. As a means of unveiling the central administration building as the newly named Helen R. Maloney Administration Building, Mr. Maloney and Mrs. Stokke grabbed a pair of ceremonial scissors and cut away at the tape,

unveiling the brand-new sign for all to see. In addition to being a highly loved and respected community member, Mrs. Maloney served as both a member on the board of education for a number of years, along with multiple other roles in community associations and committees.

Brookhaven Hispanic Advisory Board Award Four Bellport High School seniors received awards from Brookhaven Town’s Hispanic Advisory Board during the fifth annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration. Chelsea Argueta, Henry Chillogallo, Ivelisse Diaz and Katerin Fuentes Velasco were among the 64 Hispanic/Latino seniors

The Bellport High School girls varsity volleyball team clinched the League 4 Championship title this month and finished the season 10-0, with an overall record of 14-5. Larry Auth, who has coached the team for the past 23 years, noted that during his tenure this exceptional team has now garnered 15 league titles and nine secondplacements. “All the players have been dedicated to the team,” Auth said. “Everyone contributed to the team in different areas and worked together to make this a successful season.” Prior to the Oct. 29 playoff game against West Islip, senior team captains Jaelyn Conquest, Alyssa Mantione and Jamie Trowbridge described the team’s prescription for success. Alyssa and Jamie have played volleyball for

all four years of high school, while Jaelyn divided her time with both volleyball and soccer during her high school career. Jamie explained that in order to be an “unstoppable team,” everyone has to do their job on the court and play their positions well. “If everyone is on their A-game, then the team can accomplish a lot,” she said. “But they have to come to the court prepared and ready to play their best, and that’s what happened this year.” While commitment and dedication are commendable traits that mold a winning team, Alyssa believes that the team’s communication skills are what have helped this team achieve success. ”By communicating with one another both on and off the court, we have been able to keep everyone’s

Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!

Options services are person-centered, collaborative and recovery-oriented. Care coordinators help to improve individual health by arranging medical care, doctor visits, participation in mental health treatment and substance use disorder services, pediatric health and specialty services for children, linkage to community groups and resources and more. Additionally, the agency offers Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to help individuals recovering from mental illness and/ or addiction. These services are personalized and include skill building, peer support and

Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives. Headquartered in Smithtown, their agency also operates satellite offices in Hempstead and Amityville and a thrift shop located at 392 Hawkins Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma. The thrift shop is open Tuesday – Saturday and relies on donations and community volunteers. The shop can be contacted at (631) 676-4579 and is in need of volunteers to help with sorting, tagging, working the register and additional duties. Volunteers must be 18 or older. Additionally, this organization takes donations of personal hygiene items (shampoo, hand soap, lotion and toothbrushes) and houseohld cleaning necessities (laundry detergent and cleaners.) Lastly, this organization is available to conduct presentations at schools or in the community regarding their programs and/or on matters pertaining to HIV/AIDS and mental illness. Suffolk County Holiday Parks Schedule Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the holiday events schedule for Suffolk County Department of Parks facilities this holiday season. After another successful year with strong attendance across all County parks, beaches and campgrounds, holiday events aim to continue to promote Suffolk’s robust network of pristine parks. "As the holiday season approaches, we are proud to continue our tradition of offering family-friendly activities year-round at our cherished Suffolk County Parks," said County Executive Bellone. Sachem Librarians of Excellence Two librarians from the Sachem Central School District recently received awards for their remarkable contributions to literacy and learning during a meet and greet of the Suffolk School Library Media Association, on October 19th at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site. Sachem High School North librarian Madelyn Haussner received the 2018 SSLMA Outstanding Contribution to the School Library Profession Award for her efforts in leading SSLMA at both the local and state level. Haussner served as the president of SSLMA for the past four years and previously held positions as the vice president and treasurer. In addition, she is on the executive board for the New York Library Association – Section of School Librarians, which represents approximately 600 Suffolk County and

Science Research Student

Sachem High School East science research student Vincent Zhang was recently selected to present his research at the 2018 Materials Research Society Conference in Boston on November 29th. The MRS Fall Meeting

and Exhibit serves as a key forum to present research to an interdisciplinary and international audience. Vincent’s work, “The Influence of Exposure to TiO2 Nanoparticles on Staphylococcus Aureus Infection,” addresses the health issues related to nanoparticles found in our environment. “Vincent is an outstanding research student,” said High School East Science Research teacher Michael Vaccariello. “With the exception of publishing research in a scientific

journal, presenting work at a professional conference is the highest goal for any high school science research student.” Last year, Vincent presented his research on a study to identify gray matter lesions in the subcortical structures of the human brain brought on by multiple sclerosis. He is formalizing this work to submit to the 2019 Regeneron Science Talent Search.

Launch Announcement Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini will announce several enhancements to the Office’s newly-created Conviction Integrity Bureau, which aims to achieve and ensure justice by investigating claims of innocence, remedying identified wrongful convictions, and providing proactive support and recommendations to the Office to prevent wrongful

convictions. The enhancements include the appointment of an Independent Review Panel (“IRP”), composed of leading members of the legal community, to advise the CIB and review the Office’s investigations of wrongful conviction claims. District Attorney Sini will also announce the establishment of a dedicated intake line, email address and web page for

the Bureau to facilitate the reporting and investigation of wrongful conviction claims. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is located at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Building #77.
