Lifetime Member On Saturday, November 23rd, members of the Community Ambulance Company, elected officials, and residents joined together to dedicate ambulance 3-28-16 to Lifetime Member Michael J. Ferrara for his consistent leadership and dedication to the communities of Bayport, Bohemia, Oakdale, Sayville, and West Sayville, throughout the course of his career. “Michael’s lifelong dedication to public service has made him more than an admirable recipient of such a distinguished honor and his immense commitment will have an everlasting impact on our community,” said Legislator-Elect Bill Lindsay III. “Michael’s family and friends should truly be proud of all that he has accomplished, and I wish him the best of luck in his continued service.” Michael joined the Community Ambulance Company as a Youth Squad Member at the young age of 15. Throughout his 22year career, he has served as the organization’s Chief of Department, 1st Assistant Chief, 2nd Assistant Chief, Director of the Board, President, and Captain. Michael’s managerial experience has also proved vital to the many improvements of the Company, including the creation of a retirement program for all active members and the influx of new cutting edge

technology and equipment that has decreased the response time and increased communication during an emergency. Michael also enjoyed the role of Youth Squad coordinator and Lieutenant of the Department when current Chief, Jamie Atkinson, was only 15 years-old. “Mike encouraged me to join the ambulance company and eventually inspired me to rise up through the ranks the same way he did,” said Chief Atkinson. “Mike has always been a driving force for me to continue and encouraged me to never give up. He has consistently been someone my officers and I will call upon for advice, both operationally and administratively, due to his vast amount of knowledge from holding every single rank in our agency.” A plaque honoring Michael Ferrara’s career will be placed on the side of Ambulance 3-28-16. Michael will remain a volunteer member of the Company and is actively continuing his efforts as an Advanced Life Support specialist, Chairman of the By-Laws Committee and Business Advisor to the Company’s Board of Directors. Eastern Suffolk BOCES Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) SkillsUSA students put “fun” back into fundraising at their Flapjack Fundraiser. The event was held at Applebee’s in Patchogue. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled
workforce. SkillsUSA helps keep students on the path to high school graduation and successful futures. Created by the Sayville Rotary Club, the program is designed to provide special read-aloud stories to the second-grade students. Working collaboratively, Chestine Coverdale, a member of the Sayville Rotary Club, and Nikki Restivo, adviser for the high school Interact Club, ensure that great role models are selected to visit
the school each month to read these stories to the students. Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally
even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.

Preparing For The Postseason
On October 17th, the Connetquot High School Field Hockey team took on local rival Ward Melville in a game that could be a preview of the upcoming league championship tournament. That game was also the last scheduled home game for the Thunderbirds, as they recognized the seniors that have been so important to the school’s Field Hockey program. Head Coach Jen Piscitelli reports that “… the Connetquot Field Hockey team is having a great year! Our record is currently 9-3-0, holding on to 4th place, looking forward to a playoff spot and hopefully another home game. If we finish in this position
at the end of the season, we will be named Division Champions, a title we have not held since 2011.” “So, the players and staff are working towards that goal in a tough division. All I ask for my team is ‘to play each game as if there were no tomorrow’. The team, led by our seniors, is definitely leaving their hearts on the field for each game. Senior Erin Massmann was recently named the Field Hockey ‘Player to Watch’ by MSGVarsity.” In a pre-game ceremony involving parents and friends, Coach Piscitelli thanked the seniors for their dedication to the sport, and the Connetquot Field Hockey program

Thank You Breakfast During the month of November, the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) has made an effort to show it’s appreciation to our local heroes, the volunteer firemen that protects us, and our families. On Saturday, November 23rd, CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., and several members, took the time to visit the Bohemia and West Sayville firefighters with a ‘thank you’ bagel breakfast, including coffee and ‘fixins’. Felicio told the firefighters at each fire station, “On behalf of our active and retired teachers, this breakfast is a small token of our appreciation
for what you volunteers do, day in and day out for our communities. Unfortunately, sometimes, people take your sacrifices for granted, and we want to let you know just how appreciated you all are. So, thank you for what you do.” The CTA President also expressed his gratitude to active CTA member Annamarie Damore, who teaches at the John Pearl Elementary School, and retired teachers Pat Goff and Virginia Spiess, for arranging our ‘Fireman Thank You’ breakfasts. The Bohemia Fire Department breakfast was interrupted by the wail of the fire siren, and it took
minutes for the volunteers to drop their coffee, put on their protective gear, and jump aboard the waiting fire engine! On November 10th members of the CTA stopped by the Lakeland Fire House in Ronkonkoma with breakfast. Felicio would also like to thank Joann Ianne, a teacher at the Idle Hour Elementary School, for making those arrangements. The CTA President also said that arrangements are being made to visit the volunteers at Community Ambulance with their own ‘Thank You’ breakfast in the near future.

DOORWAYS TO LIFE - Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School’s Library Media Specialist, Karen Deaner, recently completed a project called School Libraries-Doorways to Life with her 3rd grade students. Ms. Deaner’s students were paired with children from Anton Blobocnik Primary School in Postojna, Slovenia. Each student was asked to create bookmarks for exchange that illustrated the landmarks and culture of their community. John Pearl students used New York landmarks on one side of the bookmark and a scene from one of their favorite books on the other.
Mental Health Screenings Colder temperatures, shorter days and the approaching holiday season can cause some people to experience bouts of sadness or depression. NEW PRESIDENT - Dr. Davis Pollack, founder of Clubhouse of Suffolk in 1990, stepped down from his position as President of the Board of Directors after 24 years. Dr. Pollack oversaw the evolution of the organization’s growth from its origin to serving nearly 1,500 people per year. Clubhouse merged with Suffolk County United Veterans in 2012 and the Mental Health Association in Suffolk this past year. Youth Singing Contest Healthfirst and NuHealth/Nassau University Medical Center host the grand finale of the fourth annual 2013 Long Island Youth Singing Contest on Saturday, December 7th at Circulo de la Hispanidad in Hempstead, 605 Peninsula Boulevard, from 1 to 4 p.m. A total of 24 finalists, ages 9-18, will compete for the grand prize of $600 for 1st Place, $400 for 2nd Place, and $300 for 3rd Place. Steering a cart down a winding lane and walking the line in a field sobriety test proved to be huge challenges for the law enforcement students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Edward J. Milliken Technical Center (MTC) recently. The program utilizes impairment goggles, which create the altered depth perception of intoxication, and a pedal-powered go-
cart (nicknamed the Drunk Buster Buggy). Students have to navigate the buggy around a course outlined in cones in the school parking lot wearing the goggles without hitting the cones. Afterwards, they attempted to walk a straight line without losing balance, again, while wearing the goggles, in a mock field sobriety test. The STOPPED program is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Said Claire Kessler, law enforcement instructor at MTC, “You can preach to kids until you’re blue
in the face. There is no guarantee your message will penetrate. That’s why we value programs like STOPPED. It provides students with a safe way to experience the effects of impaired driving, complete with the compromised judgment and diminished reaction time. Additionally, many of these students plan to make careers for themselves in law enforcement. It’s important for them to know what they might possibly be up against one day if it’s their responsibility to interact with anyone who is driving while under the influence.”

Connetquot’s ‘star’ teachers and staff, including Interim Superintendent Dr. Ronald Smith and Board of Education President Lee Kennedy, performed before excited crowds of students, parents and members of the school administration for three nights. Journeying Into History
Mr. Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia recently invited Robert Vetter and Jamie Reason to visit the school and talk to the students about the lives of Native Americans on the Great Plains. Vetter is an anthropologist and educational consultant of Native American studies, while Reason is of Cherokee descent. On October 18th these historians, and wonderful story-tellers, described the lives of Native American adults, and children, who lived on the Great Plains,
in the western part of the United States. Jamie Reason dressed in typical Native American clothing, and talked to the students about the culture of these hardy people. He allowed the students to handle the leather hides, and clothing, that the natives wore, and explained how they made all their clothes and tools from what ‘Mother Earth’ provided. He also created a mini living area that the students could walk through. Bob Vetter took the students outside to demonstrate the types of games that children of

The following Student Council officers have been elected by their peers: Kyle Flaherty, President; Dayna Zirpoli, Vice President; and Chase Adamo, Secretary. The students will represent their peers throughout the community by addressing the needs of the students and the community. The students will work along with faculty advisors Mrs. Randazzo and Mrs. Sher.

Ferrara of the Sayville Community Ambulance Company for his years of service to the Islip area. In recognition of Mr. Ferrara’s contributions, the Sayville Community Ambulance Company has named one of their vehicles in his honor.
