The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

Training Classes Announced County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken recently announced upcoming Opioid Overdose Prevention ProgramNarcan Training Classes. Masked Ball A Success Brookhaven Memorial Hospital held its 2014 Hospital Ball on November 15th. This year, guests donned Venetian Masks to add to the festivities. The event had over 460 attendees dining and dancing at East Wind Inn & Spa in Wading River. Some of them expressed their creative side with masks ranging from the court jester worn by attendees, Ralph Maust, and John Sullivan to the distinctive long nose Zanni mask sported by past Chairman of the Board, Robert Schwartz. Still others took the liberty of expanding the scope of

the traditional Venetian masks and wore Batman and Phantom of the Opera, with one fellow deciding on the scream mask, quite the unusual choice. Nevertheless, the evening was an elegant affair that raised over $640,000 dollars to help fund our Knapp Cardiac Care Center currently under construction on the north side of the Hospital campus. Brookhaven was proud to honor Nicholas H. Racanelli, of Racanelli Construction Co. Inc., as the recipient of the Community Service Award. Nick’s generous

spirit is manifested in his substantial commitment to Brookhaven as well as his involvement with many charities that benefit the Long Island community. The Dr. Jacob Dranitzke Award, given annually to an individual who demonstrates involvement, support and commitment to his/her profession, the Medical Center and our community, was presented to co- recipients Drs. Charles R. Dennis and Hirendra P. Sinha. These two outstanding physicians have collectively served this hospital and the community for over a half century.

Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently welcomed Long Island Rail Road’s safety specialist Chrisann Fabio to discuss railroad safety with students. The safety expert spoke with the students about

safe behaviors to practice when on a train, on a train platform, or anywhere near the train tracks. The students also learned the importance of avoiding peer pressure and making unsafe choices when riding the train or around a train track.

Riding Safety Students also had the opportunity to watch an animated short film about the differences and importance of appropriate behaviors versus inappropriate behaviors about train riding.

BEST & BRIGHTEST - Sagamore Middle School honored its best and brightest Tuesday, November 18th, in a wonderful ceremony to celebrate the induction of 48 students into the National Junior Honor Society. The select students meet the highest levels of criteria set forth by the organization including excellence in scholarship, leadership, character, service and citizenship. A reception and refreshments donated by Sagamore’s PTA followed the ceremony. Congratulations to these future leaders!

Returning to their Alma Mater for a panel discussion, Sayville graduates Brendan Barrett (Owner, SayvilleSmithtown Running Company) and his brother Casey Barrett (Sales Representative, Mizuno Corporation) spent some time talking shop with students in the Sayville High School Business Department. With Business teacher Mr. Chad Cross as moderator, accompanied by technology teacher Mr. William Vogel who often collaborates on Business projects with the classes, the Barrett brothers addressed the students from the Sport’s Marketing and the Business Skills classes on the topics of Marketing Basics & The Power of Branding as well as Essential Business Skills in the Workplace. After a brief introduction about their backgrounds, i.e., the colleges they attended (Brendan; Notre Dame University and Casey: Fordham University), their athletic involvement with track and cross country, and their majors (Brendan – history and computer applications; Casey – marketing), Brendan acknowledged the common dilemma graduates experience once they finished college. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. While pursuing a dream to open a running shoe store in Sayville, Brendan researched the right marketing strategies, considered his choices for locations, and made connections to bring the dream into reality. “I graduated college in 2005,” Brendan told the high school students, “and got the store open by April 2006. From there, with the store in Sayville…I just opened a store in Smithtown this year in May.” Six years younger, Casey explained how working for his brother in the summer months when he was home

from college gave him insights in the retail market, and through internships during college which helped develop his marketing skills, he networked with companies that sold their brand in Brendan’s store. Starting with a company called Saucony, Casey worked two years in a marketing position (called a “Tech Rep” in the industry) and from there, he was hired as a Sales Representative

with manufacturer Mizuno where he currently works. “I basically see the product that is coming out in the future—the future of shoes, the future of apparel—and show it off to accounts like Brendan’s….” During their visit, the Barretts drew from their real-life experiences to answer questions from the moderator and students. Among the many aspects discussed, Brendan explained that running a successful business required promotions to catch the interests of consumers, as well as personalized attention to ensure continued customary satisfaction.

Likewise, Casey was not only enthusiastic about Mizuno’s product line but also with the manufacturer’s online marketing tools that allowed individual retailers to adapt services and programs to attract specialized customers. Successful strategies also yielded national attention for Mizuno. According to an online article posted at McKinney Advertising’s website: “Mizuno implemented one of the most effective U.S. marketing campaigns in recent history. The marketing campaign success was due to cutting the budget in half, and taking the money they saved and spending it by giving away product to prospective customers.” It became quite evident to the Sayville business department students that both the retailers and the manufacturers needed collaboration on many levels, including sponsorship, brand and logo recognition, and communication skills to succeed in a competitive market. “Casey and I really had a great time talking to the students and visiting the High School.” Brendan stated. The feelings were mutual. “Like always, it was a pleasure having Brendan speak to my classes.” Mr. Cross commented. “This year, my former student, Casey joined him. I couldn’t be more elated to have them both paint a picture to my students on what it is truly like in the business world. Each year we try something different, from a store visit, class discussion, or panel discussion. I look forward to next year.” Overall, the student showed a keen interest in the sporting merchandise as consumers themselves and enjoyed the glimpse into the successful business ventures of the two Sayville brothers.

Kay Cameron Jewelers of 48 Main St., Sayville presented a $10,000 check from Jewelers for Children to Matthew’s Giving Tree as part of a Local Grant Program. JFC, a non-profit organization founded by the jewelry industry in 1999 is dedicated to helping children in need. The charity launched a Local Grant Program in 2013 and continued again this year. The goal is to fund ten $10,000 grants for local children’s charities around the country. Jewelers were asked to nominate their favorite local organization. Public

voting on the Jewelers for Children Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ JewelersforChildren) determined the charities to receive the grants. “We are so excited to be able to help Matthew’s Giving Tree,” says Kay of Kay Cameron Jewelers. “It was such an easy way to help support the excellent work Matthew’s Giving Tree does locally to help children in our community. Now, through our work with Jewelers for Children, we are able to help Matthew’s Giving Tree receive one of these generous grants.” Voting began on October

9th, and concluded on October 16th. More than 15,000 people were motivated to visit the Jewelers for Children Facebook page and vote for their favorite, local charity. Education Center Named The Community Ambulance Company of Sayville recently named their Education Center in their new headquarters located on Lakeland Avenue after the late Presiding Officer William J. Lindsay. Presiding Officer Lindsay helped pave the way for the Community Ambulance Company to cut through government red tape and helped to secure permits and funding to ensure that they had the necessary resources to serve the communities

of Sayville, West Sayville, Bayport, Oakdale and Bohemia. The “William J. Lindsay Education Center” will be used to train and educate the ambulance company’s personnel on new equipment, lifesaving tactics, and procedures. “I cannot tell you how honored my family is, and how honored my father would be if he could see this building and the education center named after him,” said Suffolk County Legislator Lindsay III, son of the late Presiding Officer

Lindsay. “My father truly fought for this Ambulance Company and rightly so, because the Community Ambulance Company provides the best care for our residents in need. They deserve this beautiful new building and I know that with new equipment, tools, and an educational center, our neighborhood will continue to have top of the line care from these outstanding first responders.”

Shop South Shore The Bayport-Blue Point, Bellport, Oakdale, Sayville and Greater Patchogue Chambers of Commerce will co-host “Shop South Shore on the Downtown Express” on Saturday, December 13th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A free trolley service, the Downtown Express, will be available to transport shoppers between the downtown shopping districts. “The Downtown Express links five great communities for a one-ofa-kind shopping experience and we look forward to this being the first of many collaborative endeavors of our South Shore Business Alliance,” said Jacqueline Dupre-Hensley, president of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and director of William J. O’Neill Sales Exchange. “On December 13th, we invite everyone to shop locally. Not only will you get great sales, exceptional

customer service and that special holiday atmosphere you can only find in your local downtown, you will also help support the vibrancy of our communities.” Shop South Shore on the Downtown Express was created by the South Shore Business Alliance, a partnership between the chambers of commerce located on the south shore of Long Island. Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden, along with Youth & Family Services Director Mr. Ryan McGuckin, welcomed students, parents and Connetquot Board of Education Vice President Mr. Leo R. Marinick to their annual ‘United We Stand’ assembly on October 26th. Dr. Cholden explained that, “annually, the students kick off Red Ribbon Week (United We Stand for a Drug & Bully free Community) with

a flag raising ceremony. The Bosti peer leaders did a skit on “Bucket Filling” orchestrated by Mr. McGuckin the Youth and Family Service Coordinator. Every class was awarded a bucket and given the challenge to fill their bucket with good and healthy choices.” The entire student body committed itself to making healthy choices by taking the drug-free pledge. The EJ Bosti Elementary School community dedicates the last week of

October emphasizing their commitment to a healthy, and drug free, lifestyle. Dr. Cholden also wanted to thank the Bosti community for its support of ‘Cantastic’ Week. The children were given the opportunity to reach a goal of 500 canned food items collected in one week. As of October 27, the community has already donated over 400 food items! The donations will later be distributed to families in need.

Courage To Speak On Wednesday October 22nd Ms. Susanne Bailey, Principal of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS), along with Mrs. Laraine Pincus, Youth and Family Services (YFS) Coordinator, welcomed Mrs. Ginger Katz to speak to the students. As part of the Connetquot Central School District annual ‘United We Stand for a Drug & Bully Free Community’, Mrs. Katz’

story about losing her son to drug abuse touched many of the students and staff members. Mrs. Katz’ drug prevention message targets middle-school students tempted to using tobacco alcohol, marijuana and prescription drugs. Katz’ message is carefully designed to inspire middle school students to resist drugs and make healthier decisions. Founded in

1996, the ‘Courage to Speak’ Foundation is dedicated to the promise Mrs. Katz made to prevent her family tragedy from happening to another family. At the conclusion of a very emotional, and inspiring, presentation Ms. Bailey and Mrs. Pincus joined students in thanking Mrs. Katz for sharing such an important message/

Celebrating The 5 Senses On Wednesday, October 22nd, Mrs. Donna Waldenburg of the Long Island Center for the Arts & Sciences visited Connetquot’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School to share fascinating facts with students about the 5 Senses: taste, touch, sight smell and sound! The children were excited to watch a slide-

show presentation of beautiful, colorful animals, and listen to the fascinating facts about their senses. Students also experienced how a McDonald’s restaurant menu which was written in Braille, for the blind. The youngsters also had the opportunity to play interactive games, closing their eyes and guessing the

origin of certain sounds, and smells! A round of Simon Sez, using sign language, rounded out the presentation! Mrs. Pennington, and Slocum Principal Mr. John Delio, thanked Mrs. Waldenburg for visiting, and sharing her exciting lessons about the five senses with the students.
