In Any Language, Self-Esteem Helps Sayville Students make S.T.R.I.D.E.S. Sayville School District’s Social and Emotional Wellness initiative, S.T.R.I.D.E.S., was launched last year to support out student’s emotional growth. The acronym of S.T.R.I.D.E.S. represented the important attributes that are “integral to personal happiness and success” which are:
S elf-esteem, T rust, R esiliency, I ndependence, D iversity, E mpathy, S trength.” This year, Student Services Director Jillian Makris is continuing to promote this themed approach to keep these core values in the spotlight as everyone deals with the stress and anxieties caused
by COVID-19 concerns. Since October is SelfEsteem month, students and staff throughout the district focused on promoting self-esteem. For Spanish class, Mrs. Petrone reminded her sixth grade students that they are incredible, important, special, kind, and unique. En español of course!
Sachem Science Research Student Recognized By BOE At the Nov. 4 meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, the Board recognized an exceptional student-scientist who was recently selected to publish her work in a professional scientific journal.
Sachem High School East student Christine Meiselbach, a senior in Michael Vaccariello’s science research class, has been selected to publish her research, “Earthworms Eisenia Fetida Recover from Roundup Exposure,”
in Applied Soil Ecology. Additionally, Sachem High School North and East were recently recognized by Sen. Monica Martinez’s office as Scholar Athlete Schools of Distinction.

Set up in the gym by school nurse Janet LaViolette, the students went “Mummy Bowling,” took turns at a pumpkin themed bean bag toss and even worked to pin the tail on the cat. PUBLIC NOTICE APPLICATION OF SUNRISE WIND LLC WITH THE NEW YORK STATE PUBLIC SERVICE COMMISSION FOR A CERTIFICATE OF ENVIRONMENTAL COMPATIBILITY AND PUBLIC NEED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE SUNRISE WIND NEW YORK CABLE PROJECT
PLEASE TAKE NOTICE THAT, on or about December 9, 2020, pursuant to Article VII of the Public Service Law of the State of New York, Sunrise Wind LLC (the “Applicant”), a 50/50 joint venture between Orsted North America Inc. (“Orsted NA”) and Eversource Investment LLC (“Eversource”), will file an application with the New York State Public Service Commission (the “NYSPSC”) for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (“Certificate”) to construct, operate, and maintain the Sunrise Wind New York Cable Project (the “Project”).
DESCRIPTION AND PROPOSED LOCATION OF THE PROJECT The Applicant executed a 25-year Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificate (“OREC”) contract related to the Sunrise Wind Farm (“SRWF”) and the Project with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”) in October 2019. The Project will deliver power from the SRWF, which will be located in federal waters on the Outer Continental Shelf (“OCS”), to the existing electrical grid in New York (“NYS”). The Project includes offshore and onshore components within NYS that are subject to Public Service Law Article VII review and will interconnect at the existing Holbrook Substation, which is owned and operated by the Long Island Power Authority (“LIPA”). The Project’s electrical transmission facilities will be comprised of both onshore and offshore cable systems. Specifically, power from the SRWF will be delivered to the existing mainland electric grid in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York via distinct Project segments: the submarine segment of the export cable (the “SRWEC”), which will be located in both federal and NYS waters (the NYS portion of the cable is referred to as the “SRWEC–NYS”); the terrestrial underground segment of the transmission cable (the “Onshore Transmission Cable”); the new Onshore Converter Station (the “OnCS–DC”); and the underground segment of interconnection cable (the “Onshore Interconnection Cable”). The Onshore Transmission Cable, the OnCS–DC, and Onshore Interconnection Cable are all located in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. The SRWEC–NYS is a direct current (“DC”) electric cable (320 kilovolt [“kV”]) that will deliver electricity generated by the SRWF. The SRWEC enters NYS waters at a point 3 nautical miles (“nm”) offshore from Fire Island and will consist of one submarine export cable bundle up to 6.2 miles (10 kilometers [“km”]) in length in NYS waters to the landfall location on the eastern portion wi Smith Point County Park on Fire Island in the Town of Brookhaven, and a segment up to 1,575 feet (480 meters) located onshore and underground up to the transition joint bays (“TJB”) within the parking lot for Smith Point County Park.

The transition of the SRWEC–NYS and Onshore Transmission Cable will occur where the cables will be spliced together at colocated TJBs and link boxes that will be installed in the parking lot within Smith Point County Park. The Onshore Transmission Cable will consist of one underground DC transmission circuit (320 kV) up to 17.5 miles (28.2 km) in length that will be located within existing developed rights-of-way (“ROW”) to the extent practicable in the Town of Brookhaven. Power from the Project will be delivered to the NYS electric grid via a new OnCS–DC to be constructed in the Town of Brookhaven. The purpose of the new OnCS–DC is to support the Project’s interconnection to the existing electrical grid by transforming the Project voltage to 138 kV alternating current (“AC”). Interconnection to the electric grid will occur at the existing Holbrook Substation, which is also located in the Town of Brookhaven, via the Onshore Interconnection Cable. The Onshore Interconnection Cable will consist of two underground 138 kV AC circuits, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) in length, which will connect the new OnCS–DC to the existing Holbrook Substation. The Onshore Interconnection Cable will be located within existing roadway and utility ROWs in the Town of Brookhaven.

Story by Linda Mittiga The challenges of 2020 may have changed the look of most awards ceremonies, but there are creative ways to give recognition for excellence to those who deserve it. This past spring, the COVID-19 Pandemic had postponed the 2020 National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony at Sayville Middle School. However, the Middle School recently created a virtual ceremony that was no less rewarding for the honors it bestowed on each deserving student. Middle School Principal Dr. Joseph Castoro and NJHS advisor Mrs. Dawn Lloyd Matthews, along with NJHS committee for the Sayville Middle School Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, staged a presentation that abided by social distancing restrictions.

–“The Power of Change”— to each. As English in the one subject required for four years by all high school students, these cans have been placed in each of the English classrooms for maximum coverage. Collecting pocket change makes “cents” for such a worthy cause! Student Government is optimistic they will have lots of change to make a change by the end of the school year.
