The Christmas Closet of cleaning out the house my grandparents had called home for nearly 60 years, I acquired several boxes of cherished holiday possessions to add to my already-growing collection. Don’t get me wrong: to the outside observer, it probably doesn’t look like much. And, for the remainder of the year, the vast majority of lights and garlands and greens are out of sight. Only I know what lurks behind those closet doors. (And now, you, dear readers.) It is only once the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers has been packed away in the fridge and the sounds of Christmas carols have invaded the airwaves that my mind turns to the menagerie that lies within. Usually, it is a two-week ordeal; one for the random figurines and wreaths, accents and novelties - and the other, for the tree, my skinny, sixfoot tall “apartment tree” that comes neatly folded in a box, possibly the most compact of

all my original purchases. Last year, I kept the decorations fairly low-key, favoring instead only the most special of my grandparents’ holiday mementos, a few white lights and my very own Charlie Brown tree. This year… well, let’s just say the process may need to be expanded to three weeks. The way I see it, as long as all is completed by a week or so before Christmas Eve, there is plenty of time left to enjoy. I’ve never been part of the crowd that feels the need to put up the nativity as the last of the trick-or-treaters is leaving; nor do I rush to pack it all away before the final present has been unwrapped on Christmas morning. To each his or her own. However you choose to celebrate, whatever the extent of your decorations… as long as you enjoy them, even if no one else has occasion to see them, that is all that matters. Happy decorating.
Third-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently took part in the STEM-oriented “Bridging the Gap” activity, working alongside one another to become architects and engineers for the afternoon as they built their own bridges and support structures. Prior to their building session, the students were introduced to the history of bridges during a presentation by a representative of the Maritime Explorium in
Port Jefferson. During this information session, the students were made aware of the different building materials which go into the creation of a bridge, including steel, stone and concrete. Additionally, they were able to compare differences in structure between bridges, noticing the inclusion of cables on some and the size of the guard rails on others. The young engineers then put their newly acquired knowledge to the test in an activity which asked them to use index cards to support the weight
of 25 small toy bears. They worked collaboratively to construct creative support systems, ultimately arriving at unique designs which were successful in holding the weight of the bears. Additionally, the students constructed “bridges,” with the goal in mind of allowing toy cars to cross successfully, keeping in mind the width of their bridge, the weight of the vehicle and the number of index cards necessary toward building the perfect bridge.

I used to love decorating for the holidays. Each year, I couldn’t wait for the lights to go up in my neighborhood, the house to smell like pine needles and all the cherished knick knacks to find their way to the shelves. That was, until I began accumulating more decorations than my own little apartment could handle. To say my closets resemble something out of an episode of Hoarders would be overly dramatic; however, the fact that my coat closet no longer accommodates clothing of any kind, but rather, a fairly hefty collection of boxes piled nearly to the ceiling, tends to give me pause. In order to sort through what belongs to Christmas, specifically, it is now necessary to remove nearly all of these containers, briefly peek inside, and then continue to dig. To be fair, these are not all my decorations. Not quite. Once my grandfather passed away and we began the painstaking process

The Bayport-Blue Point School District is pleased to announce Tara Falasco as the new principal of Blue Point Elementary School, effective November 27th. Ms. Falasco comes to the district from the Harborfields School District, where she has served as an assistant principal at two schools Washington Drive Primary School and Oldfield Middle School - since 2015. During her work in Harborfields, Ms. Falasco created and
implemented a schoolwide Character Counts program, which included gradelevel assemblies, student nominations, letters of recognitions to parents and a display in the atrium. Additionally, she updated the AIS program, bringing in the STAR reading/math program for progress monitoring, creating letters to communicate data with parents and managing a monitor list with parents. Furthermore, she supervised the LOTE

department and helped to create an interactive LOTE week at the school. Ms. Falasco began her educational career in the Comsewogue School District, serving as a special education inclusion teacher and classroom teacher for more than 10 years. Throughout her work in the classroom, she became well-versed in the New York State standards, developed collaborative working relationship with colleagues and was involved in developing units of study using Understanding by Design. She had also served as a literary consultant for the Distinctive Educator’s Institute, presenting to and sharing best practices with reading specialists throughout the county and State In addition to her educational work, Ms. Falasco belongs to multiple professional organizations, including,
but not limited to, the Special Education Parent Teacher Association, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum and the New York State Elementary Classroom Teachers Association. Boutique and Pastry Sale Each year members from Post 651 American Legion in Sayville are invited to Eastern Suffolk BOCES Sayville Academic Center so students and staff can honor and thank them for their bravery and distinguished military service. Both sides of the main hallway at SAC were lined with staff and students. With flags, posters, and banners in hand, everyone cheered and celebrated the invited guests as they paraded down the hall. Honored guests included Fred Hinze, Navy; Steve Antonacci, Army and Commander of Post 651; Pat Vetrano, Army and First Vice President of Post 651; Buddy Maure, Navy; Joseph Mahoney, Air Force,
and Charlie Magill, Army. After gathering in the gymnasium to salute the American Flag and sing the National Anthem, the veterans visited several classrooms, ate breakfast with the students, and answered questions about their military experience. Speech and Language Teacher Kathleen Martin said, “This is a meaningful learning experience for the students. They learn the significance of Veterans Day and then they sit and talk to local veterans and ask questions. Afterwards the students presented them with heart-felt thank you cards.” Buddy Maure was asked by a student to teach him how to properly salute. It
was a special moment for the veteran and the whole class. Commander Steve Antonacci said, “We look forward to visiting the Sayville Academic Center. The students ask great questions about where we served, why we served, how long we served, and we get the opportunity to share some of our unique experiences with them. It’s important to educate our youth about an organization like the American Legion.” The American Legion is devoted to mutual helpfulness, advocating patriotism and honor and continued devotion to service members and veterans.

Veteran Visit Shortly before this year’s Veterans Day, students at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District welcomed past Nokomis student, High School North alumnus and recent U.S. Marine boot camp graduate Amadeus GarayReyes for a special visit. Over the past few months, third-grade students in Laura Clifford and Tara Erb’s class, including Amadeus’ younger brother
Tyler, have been in contact with the new Marine during his time in boot camp, sending messages of encouragement, along with questions about his experience as a beginning military member. Amadeus replied to students with answers to their questions and thanks for their unwavering support. During the in-class visit, Amadeus thanked the students personally for their kind words and

encouraged them to always try their best in everything they do. He continued the visit by answering more questions for the students and explained what Veterans Day means to him. Concluding the eventful day, Amadeus was surprised by a visit from his favorite teacher Bill O’Neil, who was his inspiration growing up.
The Connetquot Central District is proud to announce that 138 Connetquot High School students have earned Advanced Placement Scholar awards from the College Board. These honorees include both current students and members of the Class of 2017. Of the 138 total students, 66 received the AP Scholar title for receiving a score
of 3 or higher on three or more AP Exams. Thirtynine were given the title of AP Scholar with Honor, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.25 on all of their AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. Additionally, 33 students were awarded the title of AP Scholar of with Distinction, as they achieved an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams
taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Four members of the Class of 2017, Anthony Mannino, Vincent Pariso, Mit Patel and Abigail Savit, received the high honor of National AP Scholar. This award is given to students who have earned a score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of those exams.

Sachem ROCKS – Reach Out Choose Kindness Sachem. A simple acronym with a meaningful message is blanketed across the new kindness rock garden in front of Sachem High School North thanks to a program to promote kindness in a unique way. An initiative that began in Andrea Biblow, Carrie Dansky, Jamie Durkin, Cheryl Haugie and Lauren Puleo’s communication skills classroom as a handson activity for speech and language students has transformed into a project with much more meaning. Painting by the dozens, these students are working
to transform ordinary rocks into colorful pieces of art inscribed with uplifting messages of kindness. Once completed, the rocks are then placed outside, creating a vibrant kindness garden in front of the school. During this ongoing project, students have received special help from members of the Suffolk County Police Department, fellow students and parents, as all were invited to participate and create their own colorful kindness rocks. Extending the garden further, transition program students who work throughout the
Sachem community practicing life skills in a real-world setting have been placing decorated rocks at their destinations, spreading kindness wherever they go. All who have participated are encouraged to include the hashtag “Sachem ROCKS” on their designs in order to help spread the kindness project beyond the borders of the school community. Throughout the month of November, opportunities for students to create their own rocks will be offered within the building to continue to promote the power of kindness.

Boxes of Love The Town of Islip donated 836 Boxes of Love and 751 turkeys to various agencies throughout the Town, who will then distribute those boxes and turkeys to families in need for Thanksgiving. This year’s count is nearly 300 more than last year, and is a new Town record! Islip Food for Hope donated $20,000 to the Town for the purchase of turkeys and holiday essentials. Those funds, coupled with the generous
donations of additional turkeys from various departments within the Town, set the new 2017 record. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was joined by Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, Thomas Owens, Commissioner of Parks and Recreation, Islip Food for Hope President, Liz Mayott and volunteers from the Town, at the distribution event Tuesday. “This record is a testament
to the generosity of our Town employees and Islip Food for Hope. It’s so very heartwarming to see the Town and the community come together to help those in need for Thanksgiving,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Pumpkin Chuckin’ Design and engineering principles propelled students during a competition at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District in which fifthgrade students were challenged to construct a catapult that could perform best in three challenges, testing distance, power and accuracy. Separated into teams, the student-engineers participated in an engaging design activity that incorporated several aspects of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Beginning with design, students were tasked with sketching two separate plans they
believed would obtain the best results. Picking one design, the students then constructed their catapults using household materials such as spoons, rubber bands and popsicle sticks. Once the creations were finalized, they then carefully used their catapults to launch miniature pumpkins and competed in three different challenges. The first challenge tested accuracy, in which the goal was to launch five cotton balls into a cup. Next, the power of the catapult was tested as the students pushed their catapults to the limit, launching a marshmallow as far as possible. Finally came the tower test, in
which accuracy and power were combined to topple a tower of plastic cups using miniature pumpkins. Furthering the connection to the design principles necessary to construct a successful catapult, students tracked their test launch results and graphed the effectiveness of angle adjustments and how they correlated to launch distance. Using the data collected from the accuracy test, they also calculated the accuracy percentage derived from fractions. At the conclusion of the testing phase, the students competed amongst each other in a schoolwide competition.
COMMUNITY HELPERS THANKED - During the November 14th Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting, student and staff representatives who assisted in coordinating the district’s first and highly successful Community Wellness Day event were recognized. On October 27th, the field behind the Grundy Avenue Elementary school in the Sachem Central School District was blanketed by students and staff members in pink supporting a great cause - raising awareness for breast cancer during a student-organized walk. the event was studentcoordinator and advocate Bret Auricchio. Bret, a Grundy thirdgrader, took the lead on this initiative last month to raise money for the American Cancer Society. After realizing the success these walks have had elsewhere in the district, Bret was
confident that his school could make a significant impact. He developed a plan for the event from start to finish, including creating and reading daily announcements and designing and distributing flyers for the students to bring home to their families. Reflecting on Bret’s actions, Principal Laura Amato remembered a quote from renowned American cultural anthropologist Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” As a result of student and faculty participation throughout the building, the breast cancer awareness walk raised a total of $1,100.
