Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini will announce several enhancements to the Office’s newly-created Conviction Integrity Bureau, which aims to achieve and ensure justice by investigating claims of innocence, remedying identified wrongful convictions, and providing proactive support and recommendations to the Office to prevent wrongful convictions.
The enhancements include the appointment of an Independent Review Panel (“IRP”), composed of leading members of the legal community, to advise the CIB and review the Office’s investigations of wrongful conviction claims. District Attorney Sini will also announce the establishment of a dedicated intake line, email address and web page for the Bureau to

World Kindness Day As part of a schoolwide celebration of World Kindness Day on Nov. 13, students at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District gathered for a heartwarming assembly program which showcased numerous acts of kindness that the building had participated in this year. World Kindness Day is an initiative which
highlights good deeds in the community and focuses on the positive power and ability of kind acts to connect people from all ethnic backgrounds, religions and regions of the world. Throughout the assembly, the ideas of kindness, empathy and inclusion were reiterated as they were present in each of the student-led acts of kindness. It was announced at
the assembly that each Tuesday, Lynwood students will participate in Kindness Tuesday, when they will continue their ongoing celebration of kindness. At the conclusion of the presentation, each student received a shirt sporting the slogan “Lynwood Runs on Kindness,” courtesy of the Lynwood Avenue Parent Teachers Association.

Honoring Nation’s Veterans Staff and students from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the BayportBlue Point School district recently gathered in the school’s cafeteria to celebrate and honor the nation’s veterans in their annual Veterans Recognition Day assembly. To begin the morning’s celebrations, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School Principal Alane Dugan addressed the crowd and thanked everyone for attending this special assembly before asking everyone to turn and face the flag for the Pledge of Allegiance. Members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2913 were in attendance, and commander Dave Rogers
engaged the students in a question and answer session surrounding the topic of servicemen and women. Long Island Office of Veteran Affairs Representative Karen Saffari spoke to students about her firsthand account as serving as a medic in the U.S. Army from 1997-2000. Mrs. Saffari invited students up to the stage to try on her military-grade rucksack, and demonstrated the usage of the entrenching tool she brought along to show the students. To the crowd’s surprise, America’s VetDogs beneficiary Hugh Riley surprised the students by bringing along the
service-dog “Hoola,” who is trained to assist veterans with everyday tasks such as closing the refrigerator door and warning their owner about an oncoming medical issue. Along with contributions from the Teacher’s Union, staff and students of Sylvan Avenue Elementary School raised $250 which will be donated to America’s VetDogs. Additionally, the students were able to raise approximately $550 which will directly benefit the Honor Flight Network. The district would like to thank Sylvan Avenue Elementary School speech and language pathologists Laurie Katz and Christine Monahan for organizing this wonderful assembly.

Guest speaker U.S. Congressman Lee Zeldin said he hopes inductees experience their American dream through acquiring a college degree. “The benefits I experienced in college, I would not have otherwise experienced,” he noted. The induction ceremony was preceded by a dinner, hosted by the high school culinary students. Music was also provided by the Bellport High School flute choir, under the direction of music chairperson James Uzzi. The South Country Central School

How to Make Use of a Jacket “Don’t seek, don’t search, don’t ask, don’t knock, don’t demand... relax. If you relax, it comes. If you relax, it is there. If you relax, you start vibrating with it.” - Osho Much of our suffering comes from our unwillingness to relinquish control. Everything from large sweeping intersections in our lives to the smallest details that plague us daily when they don’t go our way; we often operate under the faulty belief that we can use force, manipulation, or anger to bend the universe to our will. Coming up to New York after living in Florida, my nine year old son grew accustomed to living his life in t-shirts and shorts, unencumbered by the heavy winter gear that New Yorkers wear. As the weather has grown colder, he has been resistant to wearing his jacket, hat and gloves; instead insisting on layering t-shirts and sweatshirts. For weeks now, our morning routine has included me begging, pleading, warning him about getting sick, threatening to take away various priviliges, and at
times, shouting in exasperation. “JUST PUT YOUR JACKET ON!” In reality, the thought of him getting sick, or even what the bus driver or teacher would think of me were my motivating factors for my panic. It was my own discomfort about the situation. What I’ve realized is, ultimately, I don’t have control. My job as his parent is to empower him with love, values, ideas, compassion, and the information he needs to make the right decisions for himself. All I can do is sit back and allow him to experience the world. This morning, as we were waiting together for the school bus to arrive, I observed that my son’s hat and gloves were inside his backpack; his winter jacket slung over his arm. None of these items were actually on his body. I said, “Uh... you know, carrying a hat and gloves, and holding your winter jacket won’t keep you warm. They only work if you wear them.” He replied, “I know that.” I nodded my head in mutual understanding and said, “Okay, good. I just want to be sure that
you’re aware of how the whole process works.” He stared at me and let out a sheepish giggle. Slowly, he reached inside his backpack for his hat and placed the hat on his head for warmth. Then, as if to say, “I’m not doing this because you want me to. It’s my decision,” he slung his arms through his jacket. As a singular stance of independence, he skipped the gloves. I was okay with that. The allowing and the space of freedom it created caused my son to put on his hat and jacket. It was more effective than the begging, the pleading, the vague threats of catching a cold. In life, the more we try to control others or our circumstances and surroundings, the more our desired outcome eludes us. Be in a state of allowing. Just as you would allow the water from a babbling brook to seamlessly run through your fingers rather than trying to clench and trap the water in your hands, allow things to simply be as they are, and watch as your suffering diminishes.

The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers.

Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library Island Harvest Donations Now through December 17th Island Harvest will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items and personal care items. MUSIC WITH GRANDFRIENDS - In recognition of Thanksgiving Day around the corner, students from Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently shared the joy of music with their “Grandfriends” from the Arbors Assisted Living Facility at Bohemia. Under the direction of music teacher Rachel White, the students first performed an “Autumn Rap,” which was accompanied by instruments such as tubanos, guiros and claves. The children then joined their “Grandfriends” to sing “The Visiting Turkey” in honor of the upcoming holiday. Before saying goodbye to their visitors, Mrs. White introduced the concept of down beat to the young musicians, as she sang “I’s the B’y,” a traditional Newfoundland folk song. A Noteworthy Duet An energized audience of sixth-grade students filled the auditorium at Samoset Middle School in the Sachem Central School District for a recent assembly led by Brent Daniels, an award-winning composer, producer, sound designer and recording artist. Daniels, whose most recent work has appeared
in numerous notable movie trailers, wowed students with his ability to improvise and create music using only sounds he created himself. With help from several student volunteers, Daniels brought to life a musical production composed of words spoken by the students. Throughout the assembly, students learned
about several areas of sound design, including different ways to make sound and digital sampling techniques. At multiple points during the production process, Daniels reiterated the accessibility of technology that is capable of mirroring the musical production he and the students crafted.

Fighting Fire with Local Heroes Sirens blared in the distance and flashing lights quickly came into view as the Bellport Fire Department swiftly responded to a couch burn demonstration at Kreamer Street Elementary School in the South Country Central School District. As part of the Fire Prevention Month event, students across grade levels gathered outside of the school building as the local fire department
extinguished a fully engulfed couch fire with help from building principal Sean Clark. Adorned in full firefighter personal protective equipment, Clark sprang into action with the firefighters to extinguish the blaze as students looked on in amazement. “The Bellport Fire Department has been a wonderful partner of ours for years,” Clark said. “With their help, together
we have organized several educational events teaching students fire safety and prevention.” Throughout the month of October, Kreamer Street Elementary School students engaged in numerous fire prevention events and activities, introducing and reinforcing essential skills to remain safe in emergency situations.

A FRENCH VISIT - Sayville World Languages teacher Suzanne Hoss welcomed to her home visitors from France: her longtime friend and current English teacher in France, Mrs. Ida LeMouel, with her two children, Solène and Erwan. During this visit, Mrs. Hoss brought her guests to meet the students in the Sayville French classes, colleagues Mrs. Richter and Mr. Nani, and to engage in a conversational cultural exchange. They talked “to the students about where they live in the Rhône Alpes region of France,” Mrs. Hoss said. “Our students learned about class schedules in France, foods, technology usage, French and American traditions, and the life of a typical teenager. Islanders hockey team. During the unit, students learned numerous hockey skills, such as stick handling, passing and shooting. As the students progressed with their new skills, they were then put to the test in several
floorball games before they collectively played a game of traditional floorball. The floorball unit served as an excellent opportunity to introduce a new sport to students and strengthen the skills of students who were familiar with hockey.

A Stand Against Bullying

Essential Functions: • Respond to requests for technical assistance by telephone and other channels. • Provide technical expertise to security professionals in the areas of installation, troubleshooting, upgrade and optimization of security hardware and software products. • Determine the best solution for each inquiry, issue or request by applying and / or adapting existing knowledge and best practices. • Utilize existing support tools, techniques and methodology. • Participate in the capture of new knowledge and solutions. • Document and track each customer interaction from initial contact through closure. Required Qualifications and Skills: • Experience in alarm systems, security products, locking products, access control or video. • Some experience in help desk, technical support, customer service or telephone support is desirable. • Good computer literacy, including MS Windows-based systems and basic networking experience (i.e. understanding of routers, switches, TCP/IP, etc.) • Extremely detail oriented, possess a high sense of urgency and demonstrate world class follow through skills. • Customer service oriented, ‘people person’ with great communication skills (verbal and written). • ‘Team Player’ with ability to work both individually and collaboratively. • Able to work on site within the hours of 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Friday (full 8.5 hour shifts). • Fluency in Spanish is a plus, although not required.
