The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org
Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self- sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island.
So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless. According to the national study, Hunger in America, here are some staggering statistics that will allow you to better understand the need for organizations like Long Island Cares on our island.
So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even
permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.

Shop Small Businesses to Improve The Holiday Experience Every time consumers visit local coffee shops to grab a latte, pick up a dress at a nearby boutique or patronize a farmer’s market down the street, they are supporting a small business. The Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving are some of the busiest shopping days of the season and they also can be some of the friendliest to small businesses. Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland. It may have been born in the Golden State, but the movement soon spread across the country. Plaid Friday is an alternative to big box stores’ Black Friday bonanzas. It is designed to promote both local and independentlyowned businesses during the holiday season. The name Plaid Friday was used to help people visualize the various threads of small businesses coming together to create a strong community fabric that was diverse and creativity. Shoppers can continue their small business
patronage with Small Business Saturday. This, too, is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The first event was created by American Express in conjunction with the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since its inception, many small business groups, merchants and politicians have touted the event and the Shop Small® mantra. The idea is that when small businesses thrive, communities and individuals thrive along with them. The Small Business Administration says that, since 1995, small businesses have generated 66 percent of all new jobs in the United States. There are a number of big reasons to shop small. One can start around the holidays and then continue all year long. • Shopping small businesses helps give back to the community directly. According to Civic Economics, a strategic planning business, on average 48 percent of
each purchase made at independent businesses is recirculated locally through tax money and other support. • Small business owners often strive to provide personalized, hands-on customer service. Repeat business is key to their survival, so they want to ensure shoppers are happy. • Small businesses, since they are not beholden to corporate oversight in terms of what they sell, have greater flexibility. That allows them to offer a diverse product selection. • Small business owners often live nearby, and they’re the people you see in town, schools and elsewhere in the local community. Many consumers are comforted to know they’re supporting their neighbors, especially during the holiday season. Supporting local businesses is easy, and shoppers who like what they see can share the good news with others on social media!
The non-profit New York Cancer Foundation recently honored CoFounder & CEO of Flatiron Health Nat Turner for his organization’s efforts to improve the lives of cancer patients during the inaugural Raising Hope Gala on Long Island. This newly established gala seeks to raise funds for cancer patients experiencing extreme financial stresses. The
inaugural gala event attendees were very generous and generated significant funding for people in the greater metro area undergoing cancer treatment. Turner’s company, Flatiron, is dedicated to improving the quality of care through shared technology. “My cousin’s battle against leukemia had a profound impact on me which help inspired
the creation of Flatiron Health,” said Nat Turner. “Nat and his company are responsible for improving the care of thousands of patients. Nearly 100 players, coaches and students representing Connetquot High School’s soccer program recently took part in the program’s annual Kicks for Cancer clinic on Oct. 14. Due to the community’s outstanding efforts, Connetquot girls’soccer coach Ryan Cavanagh and his players raised $1,600 this year in the fight against cancer. Future soccer stars in grades kindergarten through eighth grade took part in this third annual fundraising clinic which
included a soccer training session to develop essential soccer skills, such as possession, speed, agility and team tactics. Proceeds from this year’s clinic will be donated to the DEZY Strong Foundation. The organization was started by Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano, a Sachem Central School District assistant volleyball coach and Connetquot resident. Having been diagnosed with cancer, Mr. DiStefano decided to fight the disease and become an inspiration to others

Connetquot Kicks Away At Cancer during his inspirational battle. The foundation uses its resources to help families affected by cancer who do not have insurance, and provides programs and experiences to assist with the mental side of the battle against cancer. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates coach Cavanagh, his staff and the dedicated young ladies of the Connetquot soccer program for hosting another successful fundraiser.
LOCAL ORGANIZATION HELPS CHILDREN IN NEED - Help Mrs. Claus is a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, which answers Christmas wishes that are gathered from children in need. These children are living in NYC through the Harlem Dowling agency, a charity helping children succeed since the 1880’s. The Christmas wishes are first written out in the children’s Letters to Santa. Then Help Mrs. Claus steps in and helps to fulfill these wishes. Since inception 9 years ago, Help Mrs. Claus has granted over 2,000 wishes, but they will not stop there! They are currently in the process of gathering gift donations for the upcoming Holiday Season. With plenty of children in need, they are still looking for volunteers and donations. This, in turn, will result in more targeted molecular therapies, which will then have a positive impact on patient’s lives. Currently, he is a member of both the American College of Radiology and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, serves on committees of
SNMMI at the regional, and national levels and is the current Program Chairman of the SNMMI Greater NY Chapter. His work has been published in numerous peer-review journals. On Oct. 24, a number of talented student-musicians were inducted into the Ronkonkoma Middle School’s chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society during the sixth annual Tri-M Music Honor Society Induction ceremony held within the school’s Alice R. Schaefer Auditorium. Twelve talented students were inducted into the program during the course of the evening, as officers recited their pledges and acknowledged their duties as well as their promise
to support the interests of music education. Now there is a total of 32 members. Acting Principal Joseph Licato, along with Connetquot Central School District Interim Director of Fine Arts and Music George Rockwin, joined adviser Stacy Stollberger in welcoming parents, friends and invited guests to the evening’s events. Mrs. Stollberger explained the significance and expectations of membership in the Tri-M
Music Honor Society and congratulated the 12 new inductees, along with 20 continuing members. The district congratulates the newly inducted members of the Ronkonkoma Middle School Tri-M Music Honor Society – Varshith Basa, Drew DeSiano, Alexander DeVita, Keiran Fischer, Adrianna Giommetti, Thalia Guidice, Jeremy Jaquez, Lily Jonas, Justin Materazo, Ava Ross, John Tax and Ethan Widing.

Sayville EMTs Honored Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board, paid tribute to local EMTs for the safe at-home delivery of a newborn baby boy. On Monday, September 23, at 1:08 pm, members of Community Ambulance Company of Sayville were dispatched to a call from a resident who stated that his wife was in labor in their home. Within minutes of the paramedics’ arrival and checking the patient’s vital
signs, light contractions turned into one long contraction and with a single push, a healthy baby boy was delivered at 1:23 pm. Mother and child were transported to Southside Hospital Maternity Ward. Paramedics Melissa Blom; EMT Daniel Schappert; EMT Linda Kornreich and EMT Kate Apostolico were honored, along with two others who could not attend, EMT Michael Corrigan and Jordan Zanetti. “I’d like to commend
this group of paramedics for recognizing imminent delivery and demonstrating their true professional expertise by remaining calm, in what is probably one of the most stressful situations a provider can face. Being part of delivering a baby in the field is probably one of the most rewarding experiences to have. Congratulations to this group of EMTs on an outstanding job,” said Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
