Fire Safety Lesson

ylvan Avenue Elementary School kindergartners learned about the importance of fire safety during a comprehensive and interactive program at the Bayport Fire Department. Local firefighters spoke with the students about the different pieces of equipment at the firehouse, invited the students to take an up-close look at the trucks and even allowed each student to take a turn handling a working fire hose. A great time was had by all.

Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children celebrated the opening of their third Medical Facility in Stony Brook with a successful comedy show fundraiser on November 14th at Farmingdale’s Colonial Springs Golf Course. The 7 p.m. evening event was hosted by “Laughter Saves Lives,” a comedy groupe inspired by their own struggles to

aid others in need. This spectacular fundraiser to benefit Angela’s House featured comedian’s Mike Keegan, Maria Walsh and headliner, Tom Daddario. The Colonial Springs Golf Club treated guests to a wonderful variety of dinner options while raffle items ranging from home appliances to rock music memorabilia sat on display. Text Free Teen Driving In observance of National Teen Personal Safety Awareness Week, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau is helping to spread the word about the dangers of texting while driving, an epidemic that is rapidly spreading across America. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killer of teens in New York State and texting and distracted driving is a factor in 8 out of 10 accidents. The Islip Youth Bureau is distributing Wrist Band/ Phone Guards empowering High School students to be safe TEXT FREE DRIVERS. “Motor vehicle accidents are the leading killer among teenagers in New York State,” noted Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “And texting and driving is a significant factor in 8 out 10 accidents. We commend high school students who realize and appreciate the serious consequences of texting and driving. Texting and driving is dangerous to everyone in the car and everyone else on the road.” High School students will be able to get free “DNT TXT N DRV” wrist band/phone guards at their schools. The bands, which can be worn or wrapped around a cell phone to block texting, will serve

as reminders of the dangers involved. Even a quick text message can be deadly. In addition to the bands, students are encouraged to take the Text Free Driving Pledge. Some statistics

On Saturday, November 16th, the Camp-Pa-QuaTuck Patrons transformed the Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck’s newly renovated dining hall into a Las Vegas casino floor in an effort to raise money for the camp’s special-needs programs. The event raised $6,400. More than 100 people attended the event, which featured unlimited access to exciting games such as blackjack, craps, and slot machines, which guests could play using “fun bucks.” A Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle were also offered for those who wished to test their luck. Local caterers Island East Events and La Volpe Restaurant prepared an elegant buffet and passed hors d’oeuvres. Learning Fire Safety Sylvan Avenue Elementary school kindergartners learned about the importance of fire safety during a comprehensive and interactive program at the Bayport Fire Department. Local firefighters spoke with the students about the different pieces of

equipment at the firehouse, invited the students to take an up-close look at the trucks and even allowed each student to take a turn handling a working fire hose. Students also learned about the importance of developing family emergency evacuation plans, checking fire alarms

and the proper ways to react in the case of an emergency. To demonstrate how they can fight fires in even the tallest buildings, the firefighters hoisted the grade-level’s teachers high into the air using the 100foot ladder on top of a fire truck.

Owl Project As a conclusion to their study on owls, first-graders in Tammy Santora’s class at Academy Street Elementary School showcased their newfound knowledge for the school’s fifth-graders in an owl fair. During the event, older students were invited to visit a series of interactive learning stations designed by the first-graders. These

included a handmade pine cone baby owlet station, where the fifth-graders could hold and feed an owlet as well as learn about facts; an owl puppet show focused on habitats; an owl pellet dissection center featuring the skeletons of different prey that owls eat; a display of the students’ handmade books which included facts about the

owls; and lastly, a “haunted owl woods” walking tour, where the students flew paper owls over the heads of those walking through. The interactive event helped to reinforce many of the lessons the students learned in the classroom and incorporated a multidisciplinary approach to education.

At Sylvan Avenue Elementary School, the nation’s veterans were celebrated not just on one day this November, but for an entire week. Leading up to their schoolwide Veterans Day assembly program, the school’s students and staff coordinated several fundraising activities for veteran support organizations, wrote hundreds of letters to wounded veterans and created a “Hallway of Heroes” to showcase the names and pictures of family members or friends who have served in the armed forces. After members of the Marine Corps Honor

Guard presented the colors to signify the start of the school’s ceremony, several presenters spoke to the students, staff members and local veterans in attendance about this significant topic. Retired Brig. Gen. John Digilio discussed the importance of service and the freedoms Americans enjoy while Faye Cambria, a member of Patchogue’s VFW Ladies Auxiliary, spoke about the Honor Flight, an organization that sends WWII veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial for free. Senioritis

For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Towards the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy towards school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress

that comes with waiting for your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their car, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average

drops a single letter grade, the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.

Tis’ The Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Tis’ the season for outdoing ourselves – in every way… for feasting for what seems like days on end, for running up the credit cards on gifts for all our friends and loved ones – and occasionally ourselves – for “decking the halls” with extravagant garlands and twinkling lights and precious ornaments… There are many who detest this time of year, for precisely these reasons. But I love it.

Tis’ the season to be jolly, right? And why not … we spend enough of our days consumed by outside issues beyond our control. We deserve this brief reprieve from the madness, don’t we? No time like the present to savor the moment and enjoy all of life’s blessings. And, for me, this holiday season will be a year of firsts: First Christmas in my new apartment. First opportunity to decorate and put up my very own tree. First chance to perhaps host a gathering

of my own and – dare I even say it – cook?!? Perhaps not. We wouldn’t want to be too ambitious! But still, the season will be exciting. It is a time for establishing new traditions and carrying on old ones. For reconnecting with those we have lost touch with over the last year. For spending quality time with those who mean the most. It is time, time we cannot get enough of. However you choose to spend it, may you enjoy it wholeheartedly.

During a commemorative letter of intent signing event at the school, six students put pen to paper to mark their commitments to their future schools, with one honored for being nominated to attend a military service academy. “These individuals have worked tirelessly both in

Hands-On Experience Bayport-Blue Point High School juniors had the chance to experience a range of potential careers that await them during this year’s Job Shadow Day. The program, which is held in the fall for juniors and the winter for sophomores, gives students the chance to get an up-close look at what the working world is like and how the skills they learn in school can be put

into action. During the event, students were paired with professionals from the local and surrounding communities based on their interest. The students shadowed these mentors throughout the daylong program and completed some of the daily tasks involved in their chosen career. This year’s participants

Legislative Welcome Recently, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, and Legislator Lynne Nowick honored former New York Jet Marty Lyons at a meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, on the occasion of his induction to the New Yorks Jets Ring of Honor. Mr. Lyons, one-fourth of the feared front four of the 1980’s Jet teams, known as the New York Sack Exchange was known for his hard work and ferocity on the field, but maybe is better known for his kindly and charitable ways off the

field. While with the Jets, Mr. Lyons started the Marty Lyons Foundation, helping give wishes to terminally ill children between the ages of three and 17. It was because of this work with his foundation that Mr. Lyons won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award and the Heisman Humanitarian Award. This year, the Jets inducted Mr. Lyons into the New York Jets Ring of Honor at Metlife Stadium during a ceremony featuring past honorees, and former teammates of Mr. Lyons. “Besides being

a national champion at the University of Alabama, an 11-year veteran with the New York Jets, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, a successful businessman and broadcaster, it is Mr. Lyons ‘s work with the community right here in Suffolk County that is his biggest accomplishment,” said Legislator Kennedy. A Play On Plays Monahan’s zing) delivered one-liners that showed no mercy; Playwright Phyllis (Gabby Giovan) or Philip (Jake Vail) were dithering, bothersome, and masterfully intrusive as the writer who cannot stop rewriting. Nor could the “murder–mystery” be redeemed by its “actors.” Perpetuating this comedy of errors were: The ludicrous Henry Benish (Rowen Mahoney),

as “Lord Dudley,” who sported a frozen grin and melodramatic pose every time the curtain opened (for which Rowen earned huge laughs!); Shirley MacLaine’s insightful quote: “You have to be talentedly insecure … to be a good actress” did NOT apply to not-so-good actress Polly Benish (although the good talents of Mary Nichols and Meghan Marshall, who shared the part, made the role uniquely amusing).

As the wife of Henry and playing Lord Dudley’s wife “Lady Margaret,” Polly was just annoyingly insecure and easily outraged, perceiving every comment as a personal criticism, whether real or imaged. Fellow actor Saul Watson (mastered by Sean Valazquez) fed Polly’s imagination. No opportunity to insult his colleagues and their ineptitudes eluded him; but he was not without flaws - hitting the bottle on performance night rendered him inebriated and sloppy (enhanced by Sean for comic effect) as “Dr. Rex Forbes.” Actors and their characters; Billy Carewe as “Stephen Sellers” (played well and convincingly for laughs by both Jamie Baio and Sean McNally) and Violet Imbry (Angelina Keller and Savannah Votino added sparkle and glitz to their comedy) as “Dianna Lassiter” were secret sweethearts bumbling through both their onstage and off stage romance. Even Smitty (Dara Scolnick and Raven Dushnick who knew their places perfectly) was always on edge, but never on cue for her smallest of parts as “Doris the Maid.” While “rumor” has it that actual lines may have occasionally been dropped and some scenes didn’t go according to plan every night for the Sayville Players, the clever layering of comic blunders throughout the entire production made it sometimes difficult to discern scripted from unscripted flubs. Thanks to the hard work of both the Sayville Players cast and crew, what was certain was that audiences enjoyed the “errors” as part of the overall live-theatre comedy-experience every night.

Opening the 2013-2014 Season with Rick Abbot’s PLAY ON, a gem of a comedy about the disastrous pitfalls of producing a play, the Sayville High School Drama Club, The Sayville Players, gave audiences a good laugh. Within the story of the play, the cast of characters struggled with so many problems: their lines, the insane rewrites by a self-absorbed author, whether the cursed/poisoned “Delhi Diamond” necklace should be renamed the White Ruby of Ranchipur or even the Darjeeling Diamond (to disassociate it from deli liverwurst sandwiches), and basic production continuity issues like unfinished stage sets, sound-tech malfunctions, and misplaced props. In contrast, the Sayville Players seemed at ease portraying the dreadful rehearsal with humor intact. As each repetition of the play-withinthe-play was “rehearsed” on the stage, the real audiences acquired a frame of reference for just how badly the “show” was progressing. By the Final Act of this coincidentally named Murder Most Foul murder mystery, when the actual performance was underway, even things that hadn’t gone wrong in rehearsals went hilariously wrong. PLAY ON required a small company of actors to play the roles, but each Sayville Player made sure no part was small. Beleaguered stage manager Aggie was sympathetically and humorously played by both Emily Llewllyn and Jessica Leigh-Manuell; Director Gerry (embodied by Gina Mizzi and Emily Nowlan) had commandeering bark and witty bite; Technician Louise (through Eileen

For 20 years, Sayville Middle School has been offering Wellness Week, a program that addresses health and wellness issues such as anti-bullying, destructive decisions, hate crimes, tolerance, as well as Fire and Railroad Safety. This year for Wellness, the Middle School program put DASA in sharp focus. Since New York State passed the Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) in 2010, DASA awareness has been embedded in Sayville school programs and training. This law ensures that all students are protected from harassment, discrimination and bullying because of “actual or perceived race, color, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, weight (or other physical features), sexual orientation, gender identity, or biological sex.” Wellness Week reinforced D.A.S.A. training for students and faculty through topics presented by a variety of guest speakers. Launching the Wellness Week assembly, guest STRONG MAN Jon Pritikin gave an unforgettable presentation about bullying. Besides impressing the students with his enormous strength (ripping apart phone books, curling iron pan - a feat which has earned him citation in the Guinness Book of World Records, hoisting students up in the air for a helicopter spin, and bending an iron bar in his teeth) Pritikin touched their

Youth Alliance provided workshops on overcoming bullying, staying strong to your goals, and stopping bullying when we see it. There was a night program for parents and students with the same theme, and the D.A.S.A. training to teachers was provided through Youth Alliance as well.” Again this year, the annual Wellness program was spearheaded by Student Assistance Counselor Paul Simonsen who coordinated the guest Wellness speakers along with Mr. Murray and Mrs. Lloyd-Matthews who assisted with topic information and faculty training. Even after twenty years, the Wellness program continues to provide workshops because it is never too early to teach our youth wellness behaviors that can be, at best preventative, if not life changing.
