Thawing A Turkey According to the Food Network, thawing a frozen turkey takes several days. The popular food-based television channel says it can take roughly four to five days for a frozen 20-pound turkey to fully defrost. Thanksgiving hosts who plan to cook turkeys that weight more than 20 lbs. should afford their turkeys even more time to fully defrost. The Food Network also recommends that cooks who want their turkeys to have crisp skin leave the bird uncovered in the refrigerator overnight.
DESCRIPTION AND PROPOSED LOCATION OF THE PROJECT The Applicant executed a 25-year Offshore Wind Renewable Energy Certificate (“OREC”) contract related to the Sunrise Wind Farm (“SRWF”) and the Project with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (“NYSERDA”) in October 2019. The Project will deliver power from the SRWF, which will be located in federal waters on the Outer Continental Shelf (“OCS”), to the existing electrical grid in New York (“NYS”). The Project includes offshore and onshore components within NYS that are subject to Public Service Law Article VII review and will interconnect at the existing Holbrook Substation, which is owned and operated by the Long Island Power Authority (“LIPA”).

The Project’s electrical transmission facilities will be comprised of both onshore and offshore cable systems. Specifically, power from the SRWF will be delivered to the existing mainland electric grid in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York via distinct Project segments: the submarine segment of the export cable (the “SRWEC”), which will be located in both federal and NYS waters (the NYS portion of the cable is referred to as the “SRWEC–NYS”); the terrestrial underground segment of the transmission cable (the “Onshore Transmission Cable”); the new Onshore Converter Station (the “OnCS–DC”); and the underground segment of interconnection cable (the “Onshore Interconnection Cable”). The Onshore Transmission Cable, the OnCS–DC, and Onshore Interconnection Cable are all located in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County. The SRWEC–NYS is a direct current (“DC”) electric cable (320 kilovolt [“kV”]) that will deliver electricity generated by the SRWF. The SRWEC enters NYS waters at a point 3 nautical miles (“nm”) offshore from Fire Island and will consist of one submarine export cable bundle up to 6.2 miles (10 kilometers [“km”]) in length in NYS waters to the landfall location on the eastern portion wi Smith Point County Park on Fire Island in the Town of Brookhaven, and a segment up to 1,575 feet (480 meters) located onshore and underground up to the transition joint bays (“TJB”) within the parking lot for Smith Point County Park. The transition of the SRWEC–NYS and Onshore Transmission Cable will occur where the cables will be spliced together at colocated TJBs and link boxes that will be installed in the parking lot within Smith Point County Park. The Onshore Transmission Cable will consist of one underground DC transmission circuit (320 kV) up to 17.5 miles (28.2 km) in length that will be located within existing developed rights-of-way (“ROW”) to the extent practicable in the Town of Brookhaven. Power from the Project will be delivered to the NYS electric grid via a new OnCS–DC to be constructed in the Town of Brookhaven. The purpose of the new OnCS–DC is to support the Project’s interconnection to the existing electrical grid by transforming the Project voltage to 138 kV alternating current (“AC”). Interconnection to the electric grid will occur at the existing Holbrook Substation, which is also located in the Town of Brookhaven, via the Onshore Interconnection Cable. The Onshore Interconnection Cable will consist of two underground 138 kV AC circuits, approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) in length, which will connect the new OnCS–DC to the existing Holbrook Substation. The Onshore Interconnection Cable will be located within existing roadway and utility ROWs in the Town of Brookhaven.

The food drive is a joint effort with Islip Rotary. The nonsectarian food drives, which began in July, will, as always, send all food donations to God’s Provisions, an affiliate of Long Island Cares. God’s Provisions supports 25 locations by distributing pre-boxed meals and bags of groceries to church pantries, shelters and senior communities. Director Dana Jahn said Long Island Cares provides 60% of the shelf stable resources. “In fact, they obtained a grant for us to do direct food purchase,” she said, adding that the organization also gets support from churches, local stores and community sources. There is significant support from St. Mark’s, where both parishioners and non-parishioners make food and monetary donations. At one point, there were eight people who would go out on a regular basis to shop, sort and volunteer to put bags together.
“This support helped pull us through the early months of the pandemic when the food banks were scrambling for resources,” Jahn said. “Every time I think we’re getting low, someone hands me a check. One day the shortfall was so great I was afraid we wouldn’t be able to support all of our locations, but days before St. Mark’s had a food drop which enabled us to continue.” In November, St. Mark’s and Islip Rotary filled 175 boxes to send to God’s Provisions and it’s estimated that 25,000 items were collected. “It might have even been more, “ said Organizer Irene Ross. “At one point, we just stopped counting.” “We want to be sure no one goes to bed hungry,” said St. Mark’s Rector and longtime Rotarian, The Very Reverend Richard E. Simpson, “In this time of pandemic, food insecurity is increasing, not shrinking. Rotary’s motto is “service above self.” When Astrid Fidelia, the Islip chapter’s president heard about this, she immediately mobilized everyone. They spread the word to members and to other Rotary chapters, including Bay Shore, Brentwood and Sayville among others, and they volunteer on the day of the
drives. Ross added that they are often recognized by the community surrounding the church. “In fact, some even wait for us! It’s a serious subject, but we try to keep it light and joyful with contests and challenges, kids and special waves; in December, we’re going all out for Christmas with lights, decorations, music and even a Santa. We want people to keep coming back.” The St. Mark’s food drop has also gotten community support, including from Tula Kitchen who recently donated a gift card for the winner of the September challenge. Duncan Weir, a congregant who’s also on the design team of Gorilla Wrap, creates beautiful, eyecatching banners that are hung well before the event, for those to see as they walk or jog past or stop at a traffic light, as a kind of Save the Date.” Volunteers will be at the tables in front of the church doors on St. Mark’s Lane. As always, no one needs to get out of cars; pop the trunk and volunteers will grab the food. Masks and social distancing are asked for those who do choose to get out of cars. Preservation Long Island, a regional preservation advocacy nonprofit, is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2021 Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP). Nominations are open to the public and can be submitted digitally through the EHPP 2021 portal on Preservation Long Island’s website. All nominations must be received by Friday, December 18, 2020. Do you know of an endangered historic place in your Long Island community? Preservation Long Island’s Endangered Historic Places Program (EHPP) offers Long Islanders an opportunity to advocate for preservation priorities in their communities while learning how to use tools like landmark designation, tax incentives, and public outreach. Our EHPP listing partners receive technical assistance and advocacy support as they work to preserve at-risk historic places threatened by a variety of adverse conditions, from outright demolition to the lack of sustainable long-term stewardship plans. EHPP listings are featured on Preservation Long Island’s website and social media. Listed sites may serve as locations for our Preservation in Progress Tour series, which highlights ongoing preservation projects at historic places throughout the region. We also support our listing partners in developing informational materials such as leaflets or brochures outlining the history of a site and its preservation needs. Listings are selected by a panel of Preservation Long Island staff, experts in architecture, historic preservation, and other related fields, as well as members of Preservation Long Island’s Board of Trustees.

However, the nominated site need not be listed on the National/State Registers of Historic Places or designated as a local landmark. Threat: The existence and/ or integrity of the nominated site must be seriously threatened. In addition to planned demolition, threats can include a pattern of neglect or exposure that will inevitably lead to loss; the planned introduction of harmful factors or insensitive redevelopment that will substantially diminish the context or setting; or inappropriate maintenance/alterations resulting in the loss of material integrity. Impact: EHPP listing will have a positive impact on efforts to protect the nominated site. The nomination demonstrates substantive community interest in preservation of the site. Local listing partners are sufficiently organized and prepared to advocate for preservation goals.

North Shore Rapid COVID-19 Testing Facility Moves to a New Location
In an effort to increase efficiency and ease of access of COVID-19 testing, Nassau County in partnership with Northwell Health has moved the North Shore drive-thru COVID-19 rapid testing facility to 600 Community Drive in Manhasset. The drive-thru rapid
testing site will be open from 10 am to 3pm Monday through Friday. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-833-4CARENY (1-833422-7369). This COVID-19 testing is provided free regardless of insurance or immigration status. Testing will be open to
