During the event, Mr. Katz offered the students valuable literary advice, and suggested that the students seek inspiration from what makes them happy and to incorporate humor into their creative writings. LI AA Champs Connetquot High School girls varsity volleyball team recently took home their second consecutive Long Island AA Championship after beating Massapequa 25-16, 25-21 and 25-20 during the championship match held at SUNY Old Westbury on November 12th.

While this win is shared by the team as a whole, several team veterans were singled out for their outstanding leadership - Nicole Migliozzi had 41 assists; Cassandra Patsos recorded 16 kills; Taylor Konzen finished with 11 kills; Taylor Cole had eight and Mackenzie Taylor finished with seven

Today, the Islip Town Board voted 4-1 to approve the 2017 operating budget, which includes an increase in taxes of $4 per month for the average homeowner. Dozens of residents turned out at the Budget Hearing November 10th to voice their opinions, the majority of whom expressed their support of the modest $48 per year increase. Several attendees embraced their vulnerability and participated in a movement exercise with Kendra. Everyone in the room was supportive and applauded their colleagues’ willingness to learn about themselves through dance.

BLUE LINE UNVEILED - On November 12th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Neil Foley were at the Blue Point Fire Department headquarters to “unveil” the new blue line painted down the middle of Blue Point Avenue. The line was painted in front of the headquarters to honor the men and women of the Suffolk County Police Department for their service to the community. Schools throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently showcased their love and respect toward the nation’s veterans through various means of appreciation. Close to 50 military veterans, along with their proud families, recently attended the annual breakfast celebration held at Ronkonkoma Middle School. Members of the American Legion Post 155 (Ronkonkoma), led by former Commander Paul Attard, were among those in attendance. During the event, the students proudly honored veterans and enjoyed speaking with

them about their service. At Idle Hour Elementary School, a schoolwide assembly honoring veterans was held. Organized by Idle Hour Youth and Family Services Coordinator Lara McNally, the event featured dozens of relatives from both students and faculty members who have served in the U.S. military forces. After each veteran was individually introduced, students joined together by grade level to sing patriotic songs and a select number of students read essays, expressing words of respect and gratitude toward the veterans for all

they have done to protect the country. A slideshow presentation displaying the veterans in their military years left many in the audience teary eyed. Fifth-grade students at John Pearl Elementary school visited the Bohemia location of The Arbors Assisted Living Community to honor American military veterans. Donna Leopardi, John Pearl Elementary School Youth and Family Services coordinator, arranged the visit which had students singing patriotic songs and distributing gifts created within their art classes.

Outdoor Research Connetquot High School students in John Halloran’s Science Research class and Jessica Conrad’s Environmental Science class recently engaged in a hands-on science exploration at sites along the Connetquot River to celebrate this fall’s “A Day

in the Life” initiative. The program offers high school students the opportunity to collect firsthand information that will yield results as to how the Connetquot River fits into the larger ecosystem. CHS students examined the physical and chemical

aspects of each aquatic ecosystem, measuring such factors as salinity content and the oxygen levels in the water. Their work assisted in further determining the health of the aquatic ecosystem and biodiversity of the Connetquot River.

can-eat homemade soups, and scrumptious deserts generously supplied by Sayville faculty, students, families, and such local merchants as Crickets, Koi Sayville, and Off the Block (see full list below). For the price of a $10 ticket/donation, patrons were able to pick handcrafted bowls - there was an artistic array of ceramics designed by the students and faculty - that were dishwasher and microwave

safe while enjoying good food and great company. For ten years the Empty Bowls soup/salad dinner fundraising event has been feeding more than just dinner guests. Thanks to the generosity of those who attended this year, Empty Bowls collected over $1000 for the Greater Sayville Food Pantry and other local charities.

Swimmingly Spectacular

The Girls’ Varsity Swimming and Diving team did AMAZING this past Friday and Saturday at the Suffolk County Championships. After an undefeated season, the girls placed 3rd in the county. The girls who made Counties were: Ally Alliegro, Katherine Brady, Meghan Caraher, Megan Donnelly, Leighann Gensch, Brenna Horan, Katie Kolar, Megan Romano, Melina Piervencenti, Patricia Shiebler, Mackenzie Thomas, and Calista Tomasetti. At Friday’s Suffolk County Diving Championships, Megan Romano made States with a score of 449.95 and placed 8th in the county. Calista Tomasetti also beat her best score with a 397.65 and placed 12th in

Suffolk County.” At the swimming championships on Saturday, every single swimmer beat her time in one or more of her events. The 200 Medley Relay (Mackenzie Thomas, Meghan Caraher, Megan Donnelly, and Leighann Gensch) finished 1st in Suffolk County with a 1:49.51, broke the school record for both meters and yards, and will be representing Sayville/ Bayport/Bluepoint at the State Championships on November 18th-19th. Mackenzie Thomas also broke the school record in the 100 backstroke (which she will be swimming at States) with a 57.69 and placed 2nd in Suffolk County. Megan Donnelly made the State qualifying cut in the 100 butterfly

earlier in the season, but over the weekend she beat her best time with a 58.94 and made States in the 200 freestyle with a 1:56.88. She placed second in the county in both of her individual events. Meghan Caraher made States in the 100 breaststroke earlier in the season, beat her time with a 1:07.42 on Saturday, and placed 4th in the county. Meghan also beat her time in the 500 freestyle and placed 2nd in Suffolk County. The final event to make States was the 400 Medley Relay with Megan Donnelly, Leighann Gensch, Patricia Shiebler and Mackenzie Thomas. They took 7 seconds off their best time to place second in Suffolk County with a 3:39.65. Congratulations, girls!

If you haven’t heard the 103.9 LINews Radio series Spotlight on Long Island Schools, hosted by Robert Vecchio and broadcast in two ten-minute segments, then you are missing out on positive news about Long Island students, teachers, and school programs. A particularly heartwarming broadcast that aired on October 29th focused on a group of Sayville students and their experiences in the district’s groundbreaking Functional Academics and Career Development program. After commenting that the students were accompanied to the radio booth by a “whole entourage” of supporters, LINews host Bob Vecchio began his interview with Sayville Special Ed administrator Tracy Von Eschen who outlined the benefits and goals that are available for the FACD students. During her introduction, Von Eschen gave a snapshot of services, explaining how FACD Special Education Teacher Donna Trpicovsky works with the students and engages them in a diversity of opportunities. Along with the academics, these students work in the school store, receive assistance from job coaches, belong to SHS sports teams, and had in the fall participated in the Homecoming preparations and the parade. “The program is unique in that you integrate all student populations to help mentor those taking some of the vocational courses,” Vecchio stated before inviting one such mentor to the microphone. Jayna, a Sayville Freshman who had worked with special education students when she was in Sayville Middle School, expressed her sentiments that she shared with other volunteers. “My favorite part is watching them

learn. It’s great to see the bond that we’ve already have together, and I know that we are going to have a lot of fun throughout the year.” As FACD is year-round program, the students had also spent four days a week for six weeks this past summer going out to different job sites, such as Applebees, Bobs, and Petco, to learn both new skills and discover new interests. On the fifth day, they had returned to the Sayville High School’s greenhouse to reinforce their academics and business management skills.

Vecchio continued the conversation with Claire Rymer, Transition Coordinator, who has the task of preparing the students for what’s next beyond the school district. “Transition is change,” Rymer said. “Transition begins at age fifteen….we work together… with the parents and students to develop a plan for these children for when they graduate, whether it be at eighteen or whether

Over the last four years, Tracy and I have worked on the program …to bring students back [to the district]…and really develop a program where there is not only emphasis on academics but there’s a huge emphasis on career and making a lot of these young kids career-ready when they leave us.” The most inspiring part of the broadcast, however, was listening to the FACD student express themselves - after receiving gentle encouragement from Vecchio and the Sayville educators - to talk about their school program on the air. And the students, despite their personal challenges, were more than willing to try. Highlighting their Functional Academics and Career Development program on LINews Radio was a wonderful and exciting experience for the Sayville High School “entourage.” But the real rewards came after they had signed off. Each of the students, along with their parents and educators, could not help but beam with pride for another job well done. Sayville Board of Education President John Verdone, a great supporter of the Spotlight on Long Island Schools Radio series, had been present when the FACD students taped the show. He was thrilled with the results. “The opportunity to attend this broadcast was one of the most rewarding experiences for me. As a community, Sayville is truly blessed with dedicated staff, students and parents that put the best interest of our children first. A special thanks to Long Island News Radio and Bob Vechicco for giving us the opportunity.”

On Friday, November 4th, teens from the Connetquot Public Library participated in a Soldier Support program for service members stationed overseas and for those in hospitals. This program allowed teens to design notebooks, write letters for Operation Gratitude to a newly enlisted soldier or to thank a veteran for their service. Frank Bania, of Boots on

the Ground NY, a volunteer organization of veterans helping veterans, visited the library for this special program. In addition to preparing notebooks and letters, teens filled care packages with a host of items, including snacks, toiletries, socks and DVDs. The program, initiated by teen Librarian, Angela Breslin in 2012, gives teens the opportunity to earn community service,

but more importantly it enables them to understand and appreciate the sacrifices of those who serve. As a teen librarian, Angela focuses on crafting programs to create a sense of purpose, a sense of inclusion and to broaden the scope of our teens on every level. With over 20 care packages labeled and sealed, we simply say, thank you.

As an extension of their class curriculum, Connetquot High School students in William Bedell’s Level III Spanish classes recently celebrated “Dia de Los Muertos,” the Latin American holiday meaning Day of the Dead, in a very creative way. While keeping in mind

the meaning behind the holiday – one meant to be a joyous occasion where the memories of the deceased are remembered and cherished – the students fashioned several customary holiday items. They worked collaboratively to create an altar where items are

offered in the memory of a deceased loved one, while Mr. Bedell created the copal (incense) that fills the air during the ceremonies. Additionally, the students had a calavera (skull) cake decorating contest based on the colorful skull symbols that play a large role within this custom.

Drone Technology

Students enrolled in the HVAC Program at the Academy at Milliken Technical Center are learning how to utilize small Unmanned Aircraft Systems aka drone technology in the classroom. HVAC Teacher Nick DeBlanco said, “Learning how to use a drone will improve their skills as HVAC Technicians and will make them more employable.” In 2014, Mr. DeBlanco received a Gary D. Bixhorn grant to purchase a DJI Phantom 3 Professional Drone; in 2015 DeBlanco was awarded additional grant money. He used the funds to obtain a Thermal Image Camera which he mounted on the drone. After the Federal Aviation Administration’s most recent rules were

issued in August 2016 for drones, DeBlanco and his Teaching Assistant Evan Damadeo, a FAA licensed Certified Flight Instructor and licensed small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) operator, have been working with the HVAC students on obtaining their Remote Pilot Certificate. “We are teaching them how to safely fly a drone and how to handle emergencies related to a drone,” said Damadeo. In the academic setting students have begun learning about registration, certification requirements, and eligibility for the certificate. Damadeo said, “Over the course of a week we’ve covered how to handle a strong force wind, or fly away conditions; how to safely handle, charge,

and store lithium batteries; what to do if you lose GPS; who the final authority is in case of an emergency; and, how to interpret and read weather reports.” After the lecture, the students practice flying the drone in a field outside their classroom under the guidance of either DeBlanco or Damadeo. An upcoming project involves the students visiting a local church and, utilizing the thermal image camera on the drone, find and propose a fix to any heat loss in the building. “This new skill will better prepare my students for future careers. Employers are already starting to utilize them in order to make their businesses more profitable, efficient, and safe,” said, DeBlanco.

To further develop a love of reading and writing, Blue Point Elementary School recently hosted an interactive workshop with children’s book author Alan Katz. During the event, Mr.

Katz offered the students valuable literary advice, and suggested that the students seek inspiration from what makes them happy and to incorporate humor into their creative writings.

After his humorous and insightful presentation, Mr. Katz took the time to sign copies of his books, such as “Take Me Out of the Bathtub” and “Poems I Wrote When No One Was Looking.”

Of Fuzz & Refurbishing What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Librarians from all three Long Island BOCES converged at the UPsky Hotel in Hauppauge for The Long Island School Library Systems 3rd Regional Institute. This unique event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Carl Vitevitch, Eastern Suffolk BOCES; Sara Kardasz, Western Suffolk BOCES, and Donna Rosenblum, Nassau BOCES. It was a day for professional development and so much more. Attending an event of this magnitude allows teacher librarians from across Nassau and Suffolk to share ideas, network, learn from each other, keep up with technology, and find new concepts and learning tools to enhance education. With twenty breakout sessions to choose from like The Compassionate Maker: Creating a Culture of Caring, Got Books? Bring them to Life! and To Your Health!, attendees learned hands on character education activities, how to expand students reading experiences, and acquired FREE resources for teaching and learning about the human body, health, and wellness. Eighteen vendors

including FactCite, Scholastic, OverDrive, Soundzabound, Infobase, Follett, edu.buncee, and Delaney, lined the hallways of the hotel offering solutions, creative inspiration, and innovative learning tools. Padlet is free software to create an online bulletin board to display information. Shannon and the attendees found the SPARK Connections presentation relatable because it wove the information and stories shared on Padlet to enhance the concepts of savvy, progressive, advanced, radical, and knowledgeable.

Nutcracker Anniversary Councilwoman Susan A. Berland honored the Long Island Ballet Theatre on their 30th Anniversary of The Nutcracker at Mac’s Steakhouse. The Long Island Ballet Theatre was founded by Jan Hanniford Goetz, a gifted choreographer who envisioned a chambersized ballet company comprised of professional dancers and student dancers capable of dancing with noted professionals. After 30 years, they include professional dancers, pre-professional dancers and students that study

at Huntington Ballet Academy which follows the American Ballet Theatre National Training Curriculum. The Long Island Ballet Theatre has featured classical productions of Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and a new Nutcracker in 2008 and 2010.
