UNITED WAY OF LONG ISLAND AWARDED JUMPSMART GRANT - Suffolk County officials led by County Executive Steve Bellone present United Way of Long Island’s Theresa A. Regnante and Craig Fligstein a $385,OOO JumpSMART grant. Suffolk County awarded United Way of Long Island a $385,000 JumpSMART Small Business Downtown Investment Program grant to provide handson training in clean energy and renewables for veterans and young adults. This will include participants of United Way’s VetsBuild, YouthBuild, and PowerUp! Wind, Solar & Renewables programs. The Workforce

Development Training Academy is being developed in conjunction with United Way of Long Island’s Net Zero Energy Building Campaign, an award-winning project that is setting a new standard in renewable energy for non-profit organizations across Long Island. Going Net Zero means the organization will save more than $70,000 in utility costs to be reinvested in

distinguished Outstanding High School Social Studies Classroom Teacher Award. Budris credits much of what he has accomplished in his classroom and within the social studies department to the unwavering support that he has received. In his classroom, Budris reinforces the curriculum through problem-based learning, a teaching tool that he has brought to his co-workers and that has earned him the opportunity to present at conferences at the local, state and national level. Budris has also presented

on the New York State Seal of Civic Readiness program, which he and Jackie O’Hagan, director of the South Country School District’s humanities department, implemented in the district in 2022. South Country was one of only a handful of school districts on Long Island last year to offer the new Civic Readiness pathway, an allencompassing program that teaches students how to apply civic knowledge, skills and mindsets to make positive impacts in their school, community and the world. It also aims to strengthen relationships with community partners

and civic leaders. An impressive 95% of the Class of 2023 graduated with the Seal of Civic Readiness attached to their diplomas. Budris, a Bellport resident, has been teaching at Bellport High School for the past 26 years. He currently teaches AP U.S. Government and Politics and co-teaches AP Research. He also serves as the lead teacher for the social studies department, a position he has held for the past seven years. He taught for two years in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn before moving to Bellport. The accomplished teacher

earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Siena College and his master’s in liberal sciences from Stony Brook University. He is currently working toward his doctorate in learning and teaching from Hofstra University. When not teaching, Budris and his wife, Ellen Hoffman, who is an English teacher at Bellport High School, are supporting their three-sportathlete daughter, who is a senior at the high school. Fire Island Students Run For Student Council First and second grade students in Karen McNulty’s class at Woodhull Elementary School in the Fire Island School District practiced their class representative speeches in advance of a vote for their participation on the Woodhull Student Council. Ms. McNulty guided

students prior to each speech on how to present themselves as candidates who not only bring something special, but who embody the characteristics strived for at Woodhull Elementary – safe, respectful, responsible and kind. One by one, the students

practiced their speeches in front of their peers, who then asked clarifying questions to strengthen each student’s meaning when they declared themselves as “good listeners,” “always ready for action,” “helpful with teamwork” and good “role model.”

“Without a doubt, these Woodhull students demonstrate the qualities we would all want in a leader,” Ms. McNulty said. ”This class is positioned to be well-represented in studentscouncil this year.”

Sachem North Creates A Lasting Memory For Pediatric Cancer Patient Students and staff at Sachem High School North created an unforgettable experience for a 9-year-old pediatric cancer patient named Tenzin through a “bridging rooms project.” The project was brought to Sachem North by James Orrigo, a motivational entertainer who partners with the Children’s Cancer Research Fund to create memorable, music-centered experiences for pediatric patients. Orrigo works with kids

throughout the country who are battling pediatric cancer and helps them write a silly song and create their own cartoon music video. He then brings the cartoon music videos to life with the help of schools across the U.S. “We do incredible, unforgettable projects like this where we get to bring an entire school and community together to show a pediatric patient who has been impacted by pediatric cancer how much

he is loved and how much he is cared about,” Orrigo said. Orrigo approached Sachem North to bring Tenzin’s music video to life. Tenzin created a song about a store he runs out of his own hospital room called “Junk and Stuf” where he sells goodies including lemonade and cosmic brownies. Several departments collaborated to bridge Tenzin’s hospital room to the classroom. The music department scored the song Tenzin and

Orrigo created, and the art department created props to turn the building’s little theater into a real-life “Junk and Stuf” store. Additionally, the school held a bake sale to raise funds for Tenzin and his family. “From my colleagues to every single department we have here in Sachem, everyone came together to make a little boy feel special,” Christy Zummo, High School North teacher and event organizer said. “In one day, in a few hours,

they brought it all. It’s a very proud teacher moment.” Tenzin arrived at Sachem North on Oct. 26 to film his music video and see his store in-person. He received a warm welcome as the student body lined the main entrance to greet him and cheer him on. Throughout the day, he interacted with Sachem North students who were more than excited to make Tenzin’s day one he will never forget. “I think that’s what kids need. They need

an opportunity to show empathy, be engaged and be involved and they don’t always get those opportunities. But when they do, they show up,” Zummo said.
