A Tribute and Interview with Late Comic Book Icon Stan Lee By Allison Kugel

In the winter of 2006, I was granted the opportunity to interview the iconic comic book writer and creator of some of the most celebrated fictional characters in our popular culture, Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber). I must admit that at the time, I was not entirely familiar with his work, although I was aware that his imagination was a national treasure and that if not for him, there would be no Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, X-Men, or a plethora of other famous superheroes. Motherhood was still a solid three years away, so my son wasn’t yet around to school me on the mythical status of Stan Lee. Suffice to say, I was still excited for the interview. Upon the start of my conversation with Stan Lee, I was instantly at ease and we felt familiar with one another, like two old friends. Perhaps our shared Jewish heritage didn’t hurt (there is a definite cultural shorthand). The man, himself, was warm, friendly and so willing to share detailed musings about his life.

We spoke about his childhood fondness for movies and movie stars of his early days, how his teachers encouraged his writing ability when he was a boy, and his early break

getting hired to be an assistant at a magazine and comic book company. The conversation steadily built towards his memory of thinking up the character of Spider-Man, which really set his career into the stratosphere. It is with all of this in mind that I share some of my favorite moments from my interview with the late, great Stan Lee. Allison Kugel: Tell me about the Stan Lee creative process. What is your routine or pattern for coming up with a new character and writing a story? And are you more successful when you designate a time to sit down and write, or is it better when it just comes to you as you’re doing something else? Stan Lee: To tell you the truth, I think I’m probably the quintessential hack writer. I don’t get inspirations as such. And when I don’t have something to write, I’m not thinking about it at all. But, I’m sort of a pressure writer. If somebody says, “Stan, write something,” and I have to have it by tomorrow morning, I’ll just sit down and I’ll write it. It always seems to come to me. But I’m better doing a rushed job because if it isn’t something that’s due quickly, I won’t

work on it until it becomes almost an emergency. Allison Kugel: I’m going to test your memory here. Do you happen to remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you thought up the idea for Spider-Man? Stan Lee: I had already done The Fantastic Four and I had done, I believe it was The Hulk, and they were doing pretty well. My publisher said, “How about dreaming up another superhero?” So I said, “Okay.” I was sitting at my desk trying to think of one, and I saw a fly crawling on a wall. I said “Gee, wouldn’t it be cool if I could get a hero who could crawl on walls like an insect?” But I think I’m not telling you the truth, because I couldn’t have said, “Wouldn’t it be cool,” because that word wasn’t in common usage back then. So I probably said, “Wouldn’t it be groovy?” You see, when you do a new superhero the biggest problem in the beginning is what super power do you give him? They’ve all been taken! (Laughs) But the idea of somebody who could stick to walls like an insect, I thought that was original. So then I needed a name for him. I figured, how about Insect-Man? And that didn’t sound dramatic. Mosquito-Man? Nah. I went down the list. And when I got to Spider-Man, somehow it sounded dramatic. Spider-Man! So, I had my name. Because he was called SpiderMan… I was working with an artist, Steve Ditko, and we decided, hey why shouldn’t he shoot webs also?! That’s how it happened. Allison Kugel: So then you described exactly what you saw in your mind’s eye and he drew it? Stan Lee: First I gave it to Jack Kirby to do, but Jack always drew these very heroic characters, like Captain America. I said to him, “You know Jack, I want this fellow Peter Parker, I want him to be just an average teenager. Don’t let him look like your typical muscular superhero.” I guess Jack was so used to drawing those kinds of people, that after he drew a page or two I looked at it and I said, “No, that’s not right.” So I said, “Forget it Jack. I’ll give it to another artist.” And Jack didn’t care; he had a lot of other things to do, and we didn’t realize this was going to become such a big script. So I gave it to Steve Ditko, who tended to draw things a little more realistically and more down to earth. And he did it, and I really don’t interfere much in what the costume will look like. Steve pretty much invented the [SpiderMan] costume, himself.

Allison Kugel: You make cameo appearances in all of the films that feature your famous characters. How did that tradition start? Stan Lee: I think it started with Spider-Man. No, actually it started with the X-Men. It was in the first X-Men movie. There was this scene on the beach, and they had me selling hot dogs in the background while something went on. You only saw me on the screen for a couple of seconds. But being the perfectionist that I am, I kept saying to the director, Bryan Singer, “What is my motivation? Should this hot dog that I’m trying to sell have mustard and sauerkraut?” (He breaks up laughing) …. Allison Kugel: (Laughs) Is it kosher?

Stan Lee: “With great power comes great responsibility.” (From SpiderMan) And then there was another one… I think it was a Silver Surfer story, where somebody is talking about the most powerful person in the world. The Silver Surfer says, “There is only one who is all powerful, and his greatest weapon is love.” I wrote

Allison Kugel: You’ve talked about how you like for the characters that you write, or the superheroes that you’ve created, to be just as flawed as they are powerful.

Stan Lee: I think if they’re not flawed, they become incredibly uninteresting, because they become one dimensional. If the character can do no wrong and is perfect in every way, he is not a terribly interesting character. I’ve always tried to make the characters I’ve written as realistic as possible, and then just give them one attribute that makes them incredibly colorful so that you want to read about them. But beyond that attribute, they should be as realistic and empathetic as possible. Allison Kugel: Do you think that being a powerful person makes somebody more vulnerable in some ways? Stan Lee: No. Not unless the writer inserts it. As an example, Superman never had that vulnerability. And I think it’s one of the reasons that Spider-Man almost always outsold Superman. It was a little difficult to worry about Superman when you were reading the stories, because you knew nothing could hurt him. And that’s why they finally had to invent Krypton later on. The writers realized what a problem it was to get any reader to really feel there’s any suspense to the stories. So, it’s not that when you’re powerful you have to have vulnerability. It’s that if you’re writing about a character, if he’s a powerful character, unless you give him vulnerability I don’t think he’ll be as interesting to the reader. Allison Kugel: Can you give me one

The American Culinary Federation will announce which teams placed first, second and third in March. Scholarship winners will each receive $28,000, $20,000 and $16,000, for first, second and third

place, respectively. The Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Six teams of three students each were paired with a professional chef advisor. All competitors were informed in advance of the protein they would be given (a raw, whole chicken) and they were also required to

Without having to take a trip to Mexico, students from the Connetquot Central School District recently learned about the traditional Spanish celebration of Dia de los Muertos during events held right in their classrooms. Students enrolled in Aimee Padavan’s Spanish classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School participated in a homemade feast, consisting of traditional Mexican dishes such as empanadas, fried plantains, plantain chips and pan de muerto. The students also used

their creative talents to create an “ofrenda” or offering in an effort to commemorate their loved ones who have passed away. For this activity, the students were asked to interview their relatives and trace back their family trees in order to provide facts and information about their loved ones to be shared amongst their classmates on the ofrenda. Prior to watching the Disney film “Coco,” the students took part in a sugar-skull decorating contest which was guestjudged by Ronkonkoma

Middle School Acting Principal Joseph Licato. Additionally, students in William Bedell’s Spanish classes at Connetquot High School kicked off Dia de los Muertos by decorating edible calaveras, which portrayed sugar skulls, a popular symbol representing the Day of the Dead. Students also completed reading and writing activities pertaining to the holiday and Mr. Bedell created copal, an incense intended to fill the air with sweet scents during the holiday’s celebrations.

County Summer Youth Award Bellport High School student Gionnah Hicks was one of 100 students countywide who received a Suffolk County Summer Youth Award for Leadership Ability from Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. During the summer, Gionnah participated in Suffolk County’s Summer Youth Work Experience Program, where she performed administrative and clerical duties for the

Butterfly Effect Project, a nonprofit organization that empowers young women. In conjunction with the county’s Department of Labor, the Butterfly Effect Program is housed in the First Baptist Church of Riverhead, under the direction of executive director Tia Fulford and Pastor Cynthia Liggon. The goal of the program is to provide girls with marketable skills and job readiness training.

Pastor Liggon described Gionnah as exceptional, a quick learner and wellspoken. She noted that Gionnah’s ability to secure and schedule professionals for the Butterfly Effect Program’s job readiness training seminars was remarkable. “Gionnah is the most stellar worker and is most deserving of this award,” Pastor Liggon said.

School Board Recognition Week In honor of School Board Recognition Week, both staff and students of the Connetquot Central School District showed appreciation for members of the board of education through a number of ways during its meeting on Oct. 23. To begin the night’s events, members of the Connetquot High School Concert Choir delivered a breathtaking vocal performance for all in attendance. Under the direction of director Brad Drinkwater, the extremely talented studentmusicians performed the numbers “Danny Boy” and “Muie Rendera,” receiving a standing ovation at the conclusion of their

performance. Connetquot Central School District Director of Fine Arts and Music Jon-Michael Lasher was on hand to speak of the multiple accomplishments that student-musicians throughout the district have attained in recent years. Additionally, he presented the board of education with a large sign commemorating the district as one of the Best Communities for Music Education 2018 as named by the NAMM Foundation. Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Principal and President of the Connetquot Central School District Principal’s Association Stuart Pollak also addressed the board

in an effort to show his appreciation toward all of their efforts in assisting the Connetquot community. Connetquot Central School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams then addressed the crowd to unveil an extraordinary plaque recognizing the renaming of the Central Office Building as the Helen R. Maloney Administration Building. In addition to being a highly loved and respected community member, Mrs. Maloney served as both a member on the board of education for a number of years, along with multiple other roles in community associations and committees.

My No Column, Column “Shoulda, coulda, and woulda won’t get it done. In attacking adversity, only a positive attitude, alertness, and regrouping to basics can launch a comeback.” - Pat Riley Yes, you read that right. This is my no column, column. This morning I bounced into work, beaming with pride as I declared to my co-workers that my editorial work was “ahead of schedule.” This day would be a cakewalk. News done - check; covers done - check; calendar complete - check; entertainment feature laid out - major check! Just one last minor detail... what’s that thing I need to do again? I drummed my fingers on the desk and then jumped to attention with a start. My column!! My weekly dose of shared inspiration slid off this week’s buffet table like an off balance gravy boat. “Okay, Allison, think of something perfectly genius... crickets... any second now...” Wait. Something’s coming. “I could really use a snickers bar.” “Great! That’s the deepest

thought you can drum up today? Nice work kid!” Cue the “Meh” emoji. Suddenly a humorously vintage thought drifted through my mind; a Seinfeld reference. Jerry Seinfeld’s fictional pitch to NBC executives: “It’s a show about nothing (sorry for the obscure reference, millennials).” If it’s good enough for Seinfeld? So here is my column about nothing, or rather a very big something. The elephant in the room, if you will. That something I am referring to is the moments in life that are so significant that you’re at a loss for words and you realize how limiting the English language can be. Sometimes it simply fails you. Well, that’s been my week. In short, I’m processing, people. Raise your hand if you have ever been in an intensely emotional conversation with someone significant in your life, and you are feeling so much in that moment that you cannot open your mouth to utter a single meaningful word. The other party searches your eyes, trying

to decode your thoughts through osmosis as your innards scream out a million different things that your mouth won’t or can’t. I often think of my mind as a rubberband. I stretch it and stretch it, and tap it dry like a maple tree being squeezed of its last droplet of sap (sorry for mixing analogies), and sometimes it begs for a bit of slack; a week off to put its feet up, have a beer (or in my case, chocolate) and watch some reality TV. High brow stuff like HGTV’s House Hunters, not Jersey Shore. My rogue mind doesn’t go totally off the rails, thank you. Oh, and a massage would be nice too. So who am I to deny it that right? I would say its acting like a diva, but that would sound judgy. Okay mind, you can chillax this week. After all, it’s almost Thanksgiving, which is almost the holidays, which is really almost vacation, right? Sounds good to me! Let me know when you’ve given yourself permission slips in your own life to let it all go for a bit.

The Book Fairies, located in Freeport, NY, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that accepts donations of new and gently used books and connects them with organizations throughout all five boroughs and Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Some of those organizations are hospitals, schools, veteran organizations and soup kitchens. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers. The Book Fairies does more than just impact their local community; they are also dedicated to supporting literacy programs in underdeveloped nations around the world. Some of the books they receive that are in fair to average condition are packaged for partnering organizations to be shipped overseas! Since the program’s inception, they have helped build libraries in Africa, India, China, South America and the Caribbean Islands!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. - Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Sumdog Math Contest First through fifth grade students at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently took part in the fun and informative Sumdog Math contest. The mathematics-based games allow students to compete against other schools throughout eastern Suffolk County from the comfort of their respective classes.

The school is thrilled to report that the students in Dana Keyes’ second-grade class took home the firstplace prize for this contest, while student Samantha Oshrin placed in the top 10 scorers on the individual level. As the students successfully answer questions, their ranking on the live leader board would

increase which gets them closer to the ultimate goal — reaching the number one spot. During the course of the past few school years, elementary-level students from the district have found many successes when participating in Sumdog contests.

#GivingTuesday in Patchogue This #GivingTuesday, Patchogue-Medford Youth & Community Services (PMYCS) will celebrate by asking the community for continued support of its counseling, educational, mentoring and nutrition services. #GivingTuesday is a terrific opportunity for local organizations to leverage the power of a global movement,” said Kourtney Bevis, Executive Director of PMYCS. “Our goal is to encourage engagement with the community and provide those, who are often underrepresented, with a voice.” Forty-five percent of children in the Patchogue Medford school district are economically disadvantaged. In addition to high enrollment, the district ranks fifth in the county in terms of suspended students and drop-outs. Studies show

that early intervention programs, such as the ones PMYCS provide, prevents the onset of delinquent behavior, and supports the development of a youth’s assets and resilience. Poverty affects children’s roles within their families, communities, and in society as a whole, and denies children their human rights. It leads to a vicious cycle of deprivation, which is difficult to break without proper support or assistance. For over thirty-five years, PMYCS has been working with the PatMed school district to provide counseling to address disparities, provide basic human services and increase students’ chances for success. In addition to youth and family counseling, PMYCS also offers educational and mentoring programs as well as clothing, school supplies and nutritional

assistance. Last year, the agency was able to assist over 14,000 people in the community. Those who are interested in joining PMYCS’s #GivingTuesday initiative can visit www.pmycs. org. Computer Programming Advice Two students from Connetquot High School recently visited the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Computer Club in an effort to offer valuable insight toward the many computer programming and coding courses offered at the high school. Senior Joseph Vita, along with sophomore Albert Ang, shared with the students a PowerPoint presentation which offered advice toward why computer coding

would make not only for an excellent hobby, but a career path as well. The high school students were joined by Connetquot Central School District Director of Mathematics Louise Burger and high school mathematics teacher Robert Bachisin during their visit. While taking part in the after-school club, the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School students are granted the opportunity to write code using popular

platforms such as Scratch and KidOYO. “How many of you play the videogame Fortnite?” asked Joseph. “Well, being that it has made over $1 billion so far, you have to understand that without jobs invested in computer programming that game would have never existed.” Additionally, Albert had his own set of inspirational words for the students, stating that they should always follow their dreams, and never give up.

Recently, a group of twenty students from Leaders, DECA and video clubs at Newfield High School volunteered their time to help build and repair houses for Habitat for Humanity. Newfield High School students spent most of their day in masks and utility belts stripping down a house of old materials including insulation and foam board. Students spent five hours working together to improve

a community and to make a difference. Their volunteerism assisted in Habitat for Humanity’s effort to build 10-12 homes per year in Suffolk County. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit charity focused on providing housing to the disadvantaged, with a focus on communities impacted by natural disasters and those targeted for community revitalization. The Middle Country School District is incredibly proud of

this group of 20 students who volunteered their time to giveback to the community. Through opportunities like these, Middle Country provides its students with ways to not only be successful in the classroom, but also be well-rounded citizens. As part of a recent project on New York State, fourthgrade students across Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District explored numerous geographic features of the state and learned the

essential components of a map. Incorporated within each creative project, students labeled identifiable landforms such as the Catskill and Adirondack mountains, the Great Lakes and the Finger Lakes. Each

map also included the state capital, bordering states and the Atlantic Ocean. Completing their projects, students added a compass signifying the cardinal directions and a key to identify the symbols found throughout the map.

Recognizing Those Who Served Schools throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently showcased their appreciation toward the nation’s veterans through various assemblies and musical performances. At Idle Hour Elementary School, an annual schoolwide Veteran’s Day event was held in the school’s “cafetorium.” Organized by Idle Hour’s Youth and Family Services Coordinator Lara McNally, the event featured dozens of relatives from both students and faculty members who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. After a reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance by the school’s kindergartners, various musical performances filled the air with sweet sounds courtesy of Idle Hour’s studentmusicians, including stunning renditions of “Thank A Vet” and “This Is My Country.” The attending veterans were then recognized by all in attendance and showered

with applause, as their attending family member handed them a rose and thanked them for their service. Additionally, students were afforded the opportunity to showcase their writing skills as they read aloud essays thanking the servicemen and women for all they have done for America. At Ronkonkoma Middle School, twenty military veterans, along with their proud families, attended the school’s annual breakfast and celebration. Among the veterans were members of the American Legion Post 155 of Ronkonkoma as well as those who are active duty. These veterans ranged in service, age and participation from World War II and the Cuban Missile Crisis, to the Korean and Vietnam wars. Veterans from every branch of the service were called upon to stand as the RMS Jazz Band played the official themes for each service.

After the celebration, the veterans were invited into classrooms where students respectfully asked questions about their branch of service, time they spent in the military and where they may have served. Each attending veteran spoke proudly of his military service, recalling experiences and friends they would always remember. In honor of Veterans Day, Helen B. Duffield Elementary School welcomed students, staff and family members to the building for an outdoor concert to honor the nation’s servicemen and women. During the event, the American flag was properly raised, students and staff members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang a number of patriotic songs. Additionally, several students read poems honoring the veterans and local heroes such as policemen and firefighters.
