Hundreds of students from the Connetquot Central School District walked the halls of Connetquot High School on Oct. 26 to celebrate the annual Safe Halloween Spectacular as sponsored by the CHS Student Government. Along with advisers Sal Piscitelli, and Jennifer Piscitelli, more than 150 high school students volunteered to take part in this year’s
highly-attended event. Each group of student-volunteers selected their own theme, and together they decorated an assigned area on the first floor of Connetquot High School. Forty classrooms were designated for “trickor-treating,” and the cafeteria provided music and fun games for the young students to enjoy. “This Safe Halloween event has been a long
standing tradition in the high school that we are so happy to continue, and it just gets bigger and better with each year,” said Mrs. Piscitelli. “Today was also the kick start to our food drive in the high school; we collected cartons of nonperishable food items that will be so helpful to our community during the holidays.”

The Charity of the Month for November is: Long Island Cares www.licares.org
Long Island Cares is one of the region’s most comprehensive hunger assistance organizations, which serves thousands of individuals and families in need. They provide food when and where it is needed, sponsor programs that promote self-sufficiency and they educate the public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. So who faces hunger on Long Island? More often than not, it is people who are just like you. Fewer than 5% of the individuals served by Long Island Cares and other organizations fighting poverty and hunger in our community are actually homeless.
There are approximately 283,700 people on Long Island that receive emergency food every single year. That equates to 64,900 people every week. 39% of Long Islanders who receive emergency food are children under the age of 18. While children are among the largest single population of hungry, they have virtually no voice; their needs are easily dismissed and overlooked and they must rely on others to access the feeding programs and services they need. Additionally, children who are hungry are more likely than their peers to experience behavioral issues, reduced ability to learn social skills and impaired cognitive learning, even permanent brain damage. Lastly, I think it is important to mention that Food Banks are by far the single most important source of food for agencies with emergency food providers, accounting for 69% of the food distributed by pantries, 39% distributed by kitchens and 45% by shelters.
Michelle is a 28 year old veteran of service in the Middle East. As she ended her service, she found integration back into civilian life difficult. Through Long Island Cares, Michelle has been able to access food and support services and comes to their Military Appreciation Tuesdays regularly. Visiting their pantry weekly, she receives food for herself and for her puppy, which eases her financial concerns as she navigates applying for SNAP and other benefits. So how can you get involved with this organization to help those in need? There are many ways! You can volunteer with the organization, even if it is just for a few hours, to help make a difference in the lives of others. Volunteers can participate in the following areas: Warehouse Sorting & Repacking (lifting is required), Clerical Tasks, Mobile Pantry, Food Pantries, Special Events, Food Drives or their Student Volunteer Corps. Food donations to Long Island Cares is one of the simplest ways you can make a difference in the lives of your neighbors. You can drop off your food donation at one of their ongoing or upcoming food drives or a Long Island Cares food pantry on weekdays from 8:30AM-4:00PM. Students Say No” To Strangers Students from Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently welcomed Patrick Chierichella of the Rose Brucia Educational Foundation who spoke to students about informative strategies on avoiding strangers. During the presentation, Mr. Chierichella and his staff talked to the students about being aware of their surroundings, who they interact with and how to make decisions that will ultimately keep them safe. Using a series of engaging skits and characters, students participated in strategies that would minimize the chances of interacting with a stranger. Founded by Matthew J. Barbis after a tragic event, the Rose Brucia Safety Awareness program focuses on educating elementarylevel students on the concepts of awareness, safety and trust.

Concert Choir Achieves High Honors The student-musicians of Connetquot High School’s Concert Choir continue to make vast strides in the musical world and most recently earned several state honors. Based on their talents, the studentmusicians were selected as the only high school ensemble to perform a featured concert at the New York State School Music Association’s Winter Conference in Rochester in December. Additionally, the choir was asked to sing at
the American Choral Directors Association’s Conference in March 2020. In order to be selected for these high honors, the Concert Choir was chosen by a blind panel of experts based on recordings of the ensemble from the last three school years. According to Concert Choir Director Brad Drinkwater, being selected to perform at the NYSSMA winter conference is the highest honor a school band, orchestra, or chorus can receive in New York State.
“I am so proud that the Concert Choir was chosen for these opportunities to represent our school and share our music with a wider audience,” said Mr. Drinkwater. “It is a testament to the quality of instruction these students have received from my outstanding colleagues starting in kindergarten in the Connetquot School District and proof of what our community already knew – that our children are doing extraordinary things as part of our school music program.”

Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program in New York State. GOSR proposes to provide $1,122,706.00 in CDBG-DR funding to the Eastern Federal Lands Highway Division, the sub-recipient, for the Fire Island National Seashore – Burma Road Improvement Project (the “Proposed Activity”), which will improve the aggregate surface of Burma Road between the Fire Island National Seashore Lighthouse Checkpoint and Kimset, Town of Islip, Suffolk County, New York. The length of road that will be improved by the Proposed Activity is approximately 0.57 miles. Burma Road is the only east-west road between the Lighthouse Checkpoint and Kimset, a vital access route for emergency vehicles. In 2012, Hurricane Sandy substantially damaged Burma Road. Since then, minor repairs have helped keep the road in passable condition, but longer-lasting road improvement is needed. This Proposed Activity will strengthen the road bed with hard packed sand and an aggregate of sand and stone, established at an elevation and alignment that will resist flooding and erosion in the future. Other miscellaneous work such as ditch clearing, and signing will take place as part of this action. The Proposed Activity will take place within the footprint of the existing access route. Heavy equipment including trailer trucks, road graders, excavators, and payloaders will be used to complete the Proposed Activity. All work,
including staging areas, will take place on previously disturbed areas of the access route. The Proposed Activity is estimated to have a total cost of $1,122,706.00.

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, kindergartners from Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently took a field trip to the Bayport Fire Department in an effort to solidify their understanding of important fire safety practices. Upon entering the fire station, the students were
greeted by firefighters, who offered a number of valuable tips and life-saving information. The students learned the importance of changing their smoke detectors’ batteries every six months, the proper emergency telephone number to call in the event of a fire and how to stop, drop and roll. Additionally, the students
were broken up into groups and visited various activity stations geared toward enhancing their fire-safety skill sets. The stations allowed them xto operate a fire hose with firefighters’ assistance, sit inside a real fire engine, and practice their stop, drop and roll skills in a mock emergency situation.
