onnetquot High School Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Coach Justin Hertz announced the outstanding success of the 2013 Dig Pink Challenge. On October 16th Coach Hertz’ Lady T-Birds hosted Half Hollow Hills East and came out with an impressive 3-set win against the visitors. This Thanksgiving, more families than ever are in need of help with food - especially with the cuts in food stamp programs. Lighthouse Mission feeds more than 3,000 people a week and needs frozen turkeys (or chickens) and all the trimmings - canned and boxed potatoes, stuffing, veggies, cranberry and gravy - to help those families in need. Turkeys & Trimmings Needed Lighthouse Mission has been providing Thanksgiving food for families in need for 21 years - by bringing their mobile food pantry right into the communities where there is the greatest need. This year, with SNAP benefits cut severely, and the economy still in recession, donations have been slow coming in. “We need more donated food to feed more than 3,000 people beginning the week before Thanksgiving,” says Wendy Wood, Executive Director of Lighthouse Mission in Bellport - one of the poorest neighborhoods in Suffolk County. “Because our nonprofit has been providing free food to nearly 10% of Suffolk County for all these years, people who are unemployed, struggling single parents, veterans and everyone else in need looks to us for help - about 3,000 people a week and climbing. Our phone is ringing off the hook, but donations have been slow to come in.”

If you can help, please spread the word and bring all food donations to Lighthouse Mission, 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays or 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Lighthouse Mission, Long Island’s largest and only weekly mobile food pantry, has been feeding people in need and sharing the love of God for more than 21 years in Suffolk County. In addition, the Mission provides enrichment programs to take children and youth from poverty to purpose. At the end of the walk, volunteers planted pinwheels in the Hope Garden in memory of a loved one who currently suffers or passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease. Following the walk, those who raised $100 or more were treated to a fall-themed lunch buffet.

Children enjoyed pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, and pictures with Ronald McDonald and delicious treats. On October 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) held its 2nd Annual Walk for Alzheimer’s and Fall Festival at the Village Green in Westhampton. A total of 37 teams and over 300 individuals participated in the 5-kilometer (3.1mile) walk, with more than $52,000 raised to benefit ADRC and the programs and services the organization offers. Mrs. Wilson, joined by Connetquot Board of Education Trustee Ted Imbasciani, presented 5year old Jilian Given with a Certificate of Recognition,

for Heroism! On September 16th Jilian Given made an emergency phone call to 911 that officials say “… saved her mother’s life.” Jilian recognized that her mom was on the floor of the bedroom, not moving, and would not respond to her. She tried to call her dad, but then remembered her mom instructing Jilian on how to use the

phone in the event of any emergency. That lesson was learned well, as Jilian made the call that brought police and fire department EMT’s from the Nesconset Fire Department. Jilian’s mom is a diabetic, and Jilian’s swift action brought emergency help, and glucose, which brought mom around again. At the September 27th presentation her teacher,

Mrs. Corcoran, called her students together and reminded them of what Jilian had done, and that they had the opportunity to read about her bravery in the local newspapers. Mr. Imbasciani also congratulated Jilian and her mom, and presented the young heroine with a very special ‘challenge’ coin. Imbasciani presented Jilian with this special

On October 24th, the winners of Canstruction® Long Island 2013’s annual design competition were announced at its awards reception held at RXR Plaza in Uniondale. Nine teams of architects, engineers, designers, contractors, vendors, students and community groups built colossal structures made entirely of cans of food, which are donated to Long Island Cares, the Harry Chapin Food Bank. This year’s event collected over 32,000 cans. The winning structures for 2013 are: Juror’s Favorite and Best Use of Labels “Without Change, There Would be no Butterflies” Lines & Designs and Social Harmony Structural Ingenuity and Most Cans (6,048 cans) “Send Hunger Out of this World” H2M Architects and Engineers Best Meal “Hunger is no Game” Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. Honorable Mention “Demolish Hunger ... Restore Hope” SBLM Architects Additional professional structures include: “Fighting to End Hunger” by Rosenbaum Design Group and “Hunger is Despicable” by Lockwood, Kessler & Bartlett and Nassau Community College Interior Design students.

Since 2007, the participants of Canstruction® Long Island’s annual design competition has raised over $350,000 to purchase and collectively donate over 264,000 cans of food representing more than 106 tons of food providing 175,000 meals for hungry Long Islanders. “These amazing structures compete in a variety of categories designed to showcase the talent and creativity of the professionals in the built environment,” said Tracy Lobdell, Executive Director, Canstruction® Long Island. “The teams have held fundraisers, solicited donations, and conducted raffles to raise the money needed to purchase the thousands of cans required to bring their designs to life. On the night of the buildout, they are given 12 hours to defy expectation, logic and gravity as they assemble these fantastic creations.” The exhibit, located at RXR Plaza in Uniondale, was open to the public every day from Friday, October 25th through Wednesday, November 6th, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The cost of admission was a can of food, which visitors used to cast their vote for the People’s Choice Award. In school, I am taking a class called Sociology. For this class, we have been instructed to do a research project. My topic for this project is how the media influences children into engaging in deviant behavior. For this project, I am employing many methods of gathering my data. Students in today’s world are faced with obstacles each and every day. America’s youth is pressured into conforming to society due to the increased prevalence of negative influences depicted in the media. Bad habits are developed as a result of repeated exposure to the products

that companies try to push to children. Via the media, messages of cigarettes, alcohol and other deviant behavior are justified. Because students see their favorite athletes using a product on the TV screen or a celebrity endorsing a certain brand, they will be pushed into buying that item. If companies tell children that “all the cool kids are doing it,” they are going to lead the kids down the wrong path. There are many methods that a company can use in seducing the consumer. The way we display a product to our youth has a direct impact on the way that they utilize it. For instance, the way the

media highlights alcohol, cigarettes and size zero clothing prods kids into purchasing them. If the media displays a product in a positive light, our youth will view the product in a positive light. Inversely, if a good is depicted negatively, a child will not be as likely to pick up that product. The problem is, the media portrays the worst of items in the best of ways. Captain Lucas Domingo and his staff of firefighters spoke to students about fire safety at home, as well as school. Dr. Cholden reminded the students that October is Fire Prevention month. “Every month the children are exposed to instruction regarding fire safety. They have participated in fire drills already this year, and we invited the West Sayville Fire Department to visit

with us and talk to the students about fire safety. The kindergarten and first grade students were also presented with coloring books and firefighter hats. The children loved the fire prevention video, and visiting the fire truck!” Students learned about the need for fire drills at home, and the importance of talking to their parents about developing an emergency escape plan. A headless horseman led the parade at the ESBOCES Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport followed by a variety of dogs, a goat and a pig. The handlers and animals were dressed as pirates, lobsters, spiders, witches, cavemen, dinosaurs, and a cow. Included in the parade were several local animal rescue dogs that were adopted by ESBOCES teachers. Performing tricks on the ESBOCES lawn was Kelly Belle, Frisbee dog extraordinaire. Owner Dan Huebner and Kelly Belle treated everyone to a howling good show. The parade was themed around Adopt a Shelter Pet Month (October). The Animals Science students are currently participating in the Mutt-i-grees curriculum which focuses

Animal Science Teacher Lisa Mongiello said, “We hope the event will help educate people on the importance of adopting a shelter pet.” Several industry professionals and community leaders came to support the occasion. TRIBUTE TO VETS - The New York State Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) of the Order Sons of Italy in America sponsored a Tribute to Italian-American War Veterans during Italian Culture and Heritage Month in October at the Sachem Public Library in Holbrook. What to write… It’s funny, as you go through daily life, there are so many topics that seem worthy of a column; yet, when I actually sit down to write my weekly contribution to this newspaper, I am often at a loss for words. I recently received a letter from a supportive reader saying, in part, that he was writing “to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” True enough. I must admit, when I first became interested in the field of Journalism, it was mainly due to the fact that I saw it as a wonderful cross-section of all those topics which interested me – English, History, perhaps some Political Science, Photography… really, the possibilities were endless. As elementary writing assignments

turned to full-fledged papers in middle school, followed by “true” journalistic work on my high school newspaper, I was sold on the career choice. This passion for the field only increased throughout college, as I was afforded the opportunity to explore various genres ranging from hard-hitting investigative pieces to in-depth features and profiles to the more subjective movie/music review. And then there was my senior Honors Tutorial and Thesis, a 50-page dissertation on the effects of September 11th on Journalism as a whole, for better or for worse. I had hopes of eventually expanding upon this mini-novel to broaden its scope into a book of sorts; but as time passed and the immediacy of the moment escaped our collective grasp, it seemed that hindsight would change the entire course of my research. And so it remained, 50 pages of reflection, compiled

between the Spring and Fall of 2003, preserved in hardcover. Fast forward to my job here, where I am fortunate to have the privilege to write this column weekly, and the freedom to choose my topics. Over 400 bylines later, there are times when choosing new material is difficult. Sure, there are plenty of sources – just an average day-in-thelife could probably generate a dozen or so possibilities – but not all inspirations should necessarily be captured in writing. Some are better left to the imagination, where they may one day flourish into more improved, developed ideas. In any case, the fact that I inspire anyone is truly appreciated. When you have a passion for your career, the hope is always that this comes through to others. Whether for an “A” in school, or a fan letter from a stranger…

Connetquot High School Girls’ Varsity Volleyball Coach Justin Hertz announced the outstanding success of the 2013 Dig Pink Challenge. On October 16th Coach Hertz’ Lady T-Birds hosted Half Hollow Hills East and came out with an impressive 3-set win against the visitors. The most impressive part of the afternoon, though, was the support from the community to help raise funds to fight breast cancer. With the support of the girls from the varsity and junior varsity teams, their parents, friends, teachers and local businesses, Connetquot’s Dig Pink Challenge raised $4,125! That sum surpasses the last two year challenges, which produced donations of $2,500 and then $3,332! In just the last three years, the Connetquot Girls’ Volleyball program has brought about an important awareness of the

scourge of breast cancer, and donated over $10,000! Coach Hertz said that he’s “ … proud of what our players have accomplished this season, and especially their dedication to this year’s Dig Pink Challenge.” He gives all the credit for the fund-raising success to his players. Dig Pink is the name of the Breast Cancer awareness rally that takes place in gyms all over the country during October, Breast Cancer Awareness month. High school and college volleyball teams are participating in competitive games designed to energize their fans, and generate funds, and awareness of the threat of breast cancer. The overall goal of the Dig Pink Challenge is to raise funds to support research, and ‘Living with Cancer’ organizations. For additional information on Dig Pink, go to http://www. digpink.org. cakes and cookies, bracelets, t-shirts, hair extensions, raffles and generous donations, the Connetquot community again stepped up in the fight against cancer. Seventeen players from 11 different Sayville Little League teams hit a total of 42 home runs over the 2013 regular season, raising more than $2,000 in contributions in its first year. Home Runs for Charity officially gave back during this year’s annual Little League Banquet in September by presenting checks in the amount of $1,000 to Long Island’s own Ronald McDonald house, $250 to Long Island Cares and $500 back into the Sayville Little League. Slocum Elementary School in Ronkonkoma had the opportunity to participate in some TV - style game show fun on October 9th, when Peter and Randy of Hollyrock came by for a visit. Slocum Principal Mr. John Delio watched as the excited youngsters competed in a variety of spelling, math and history contests, followed by dancing, Simon Sex and

Hula Hoop challenges! Students were divided into a Blue, and Red, team which would earn points from each contest victory! The ‘Brain Challenge’ uses questions from the more than 5,000 that have been collected, and updated, over the years from teachers covering 15 school subjects. Veterans Breakfast Sayville’s History Club has created a wonderful tradition of interacting with our armed-forces veterans throughout the year. As a way of giving back, the club members usually volunteer their services at the VFW Post 433 on Lakeland Avenue for a Holiday Luncheon in December and a Veterans’ barbecue in June. These events have instilled in the students an appreciation for the sacrifices made by many who have paid the price for our freedoms. This year, student members and History Club moderators Sue Hart and Mike Pace launched an inaugural event - a Breakfast for Veterans - in the High School Senior Lounge that, for the occasion, was specifically decorated with flowers and balloons in patriotic colors. Before breaking the fast with the assorted fare on the buffet table, the guest Veterans introduced themselves one-by-one and explained their service histories to the student members. After the Pledge of Allegiance, everyone was treated to an impressive musical performance by History Club member Sean Barry, who not only played

the bagpipes but was attired in traditional kilt. The History Club members demonstrated both great respect when listening to the Veterans and genuine enthusiasm as they engaged in conversations while sharing in the delicious breakfast.

Safe Halloween Spectacular

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Student Government recently hosted the annual Safe Halloween Spectacular. The Safe Halloween Spectacular is an opportunity for student volunteers to ensure

the children in their community have a fun and safe environment to trick or treat in. Groups of students selected their own theme and decorated an assigned classroom that kids could ‘trick or treat’ in. Approximately 120 high school students, divided into teams of three,

volunteered to decorate 40 classrooms for this year’s Halloween event. Students collected canned food as part of the admission and donated the proceeds to both Long Island Harvest and a local church food bank.

Peer Leaders Meet & Greet

Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti School in Bohemia, recently visited with Mrs. Kaczorek’s class to witness their interaction with the school’s Peer Leaders. Dr. Cholden said that “Mrs. Kaczorek had invited the 5th grade Peer Leaders to class for a ‘Meet

& Greet’ with her excited students. The fifth graders will be coming weekly to assist with social skills.” The children paired up, and learned a bit about one another, as they ‘shared’ and talked to one another. Mrs. Kaczorek distributed a worksheet for the youngsters to work on

together which included their names, ages, and what each of them ‘likes’. Snacks made the visit festive, and party-like. Mrs. Kaczorek thanked Dr. Cholden and the Peer Leaders for the visit, and looks forward to their regular interaction with her students.
