CAPS announced today the launch of its SUSS (Students United for Safe Schools) website http:// suss.capsli.org to promote and expand its bullying prevention team building program for middle and high school students. This innovative program was designed and created through the CAPS Bullying Prevention Center and is the first of its kind in the region. SUSS teams are committed to changing school culture and reducing bullying and cyberbullying behaviors in their school communities. In the last three years more than 20 Long Island and Westchester middle and high schools have started a SUSS team. These teams have created public service announcements, posters campaigns, mentoring activities, and participated in national campaigns sponsored by GLSEN and

Teaching Tolerance. The goal of these campaigns is to create school communities where all students feel safe, valued, and respected. We have had SUSS teams appear on News 12 and receive a national Character Education Partnership Award. Funding from the Long Island Community Foundation through its Youth Violence Prevention initiative has enabled CAPS to develop the website, expand the SUSS program, and share and publicize the work that school teams are doing towards creating safe school climates. “Now all Long Island students will be able to benefit from CAPS’ SUSS initiative, fostering positive school climates where all children can feel safe. All L.I. middle and high schools will have the opportunity to create a SUSS team and receive

Well there it is. I hope you enjoyed autumn. Did you savor the glorious foliage on your drive to work? Did you pick enough apples and pumpkins to last you through your winter hibernation? Did you take in the requisite corn mazes and haunted houses and eat far too much Halloween candy in the process? Like it or not, once those leaves begin to brown and flutter to the ground en masse, autumn is officially past its peak. Forecasters are already beginning

to utter that dreaded four-letter word as the temperatures drop each evening. Heck, even some retailers seem to have hit fast forward, starting their “Black Friday” sales the day after Halloween this year. Um… did we miss something? As far as I’m concerned, “winter” is still a few weeks out. There’s still plenty of turkey and trimmings to be enjoyed, leaf piles to jump into and mum plants to admire. The shopping and decorating and wrapping and cooking can wait a bit. There will be plenty of time for all that over the next

month or so. And then… well, then it’s just plain old winter. Slow down. Savor. Repeat for next season. It’s not that difficult. Perhaps if everyone wasn’t in such a great rush, there would be more time to accomplish things. Mindset is everything. In the meantime, enjoy the cool, crisp autumn air as you rake your leaves and plan the Thanksgiving menu for next week. Be thankful we have four seasons to enjoy, and be thankful for all those whom you are blessed to share them with.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students not only scared up a few treats this Halloween, they also pounded the pavement for worthy causes as they celebrated the spooky holiday. As part of their study on human rights, the school’s fifth-graders had been learning about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and how the 30 articles of this document are being

challenged and upheld across the globe. Using their newfound knowledge of the topic, the grade level elected to participate in UNICEF’s annual Trick or Treat program. Throughout the effort, the students collected more than $647 in spare change and donations from community and family members. The money collected will go directly to purchasing such items as water pumps for villages,

vaccinations for children and bicycles to deliver medicine Following the holiday, the school’s students also donated their unwanted candy to a support drive organized by the building’s peer leaders. Contributions to the sweet treats drive were delivered to a local orthodontist, Dr. Egan, who will send the candy to American troops currently deployed.

Paint, Palettes, and Pinot Night at the Sketchbook Studio in Patchogue provided an artistic experience for members of the community and local educators to learn something new, have fun, and fundraise for SkillsUSA, an organization that partners students, teachers, and industry to work together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. Meg Healy, program director, teaching artist, and owner of Sketchbook Studio, offered her studio for a fundraiser as an alternate way of raising money. In addition to owning Sketchbook Studio, Ms. Healy is a special education aide at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) in the Horticulture Program at Islip Career Center. The center serves students with disabilities from ESBOCES component school districts. The students learn technical and academic skills that prepare them for future careers and employment. SkillsUSA encourages all individuals to be involved and embraces inclusion and diversity. The organization offers student competitions at the regional, state, and national level. “The studio is a venue that provides social interaction and the relaxed

atmosphere nurtures artistic expression.” Her website offering Paint, Palettes & Pinot, a fundraiser geared toward ESBOCES staff, drew the attention of community members. ‘No painting experience necessary’ says Ms. Healy. “I supply the materials, acrylic paint, canvas, brushes, and a smock. Step by step instruction is provided so each person can create their own unique piece of art.” The programs at the studio are inclusive on many levels. Inclusive in the sense that everyone at every level of artistic ability is welcome to attend. More importantly, Healy is an approved provider and participates in the Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), Consolidated Supports and Services (CSS) model. She specializes in working with children and adults with unique challenges, especially those students with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Marge Coffey, a community member from East Patchogue who attended, said, “It was a perfect venue. Everything was included; we just brought our own refreshments.” Ms. Coffey is the executive director/ owner of South Shore Home Health Services in Oakdale. “I don’t consider

myself an artist,” said Coffey, “but I really enjoyed the evening. I met some new people, the event was for a good cause, and I came away with a painting that I really am proud of.” Donations raised at the Paint, Palettes & Pinot fundraising event covered the cost of SkillsUSA jackets for several students at Islip Career Center.

Award Winners Dr. Richard Shear, interim Principal of Connetquot High School in Bohemia recently announced that seniors Anna Agnes and Brian Kissmer have been named 2014-2015 Suffolk Zone, Physical Education, Award winners. Agnes and Kissmer were selected by the prestigious New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance for this honor. These annual awards are presented to one male and one female student, from each school district, based on their effort, leadership, athleticism and outstanding character. Fire Safety Presentation Students and teachers at Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative Pre-School in Oakdale welcomed West Sayville Volunteer Fire Department 1st Assistant Chief Lucas Domingo on October 20th. Firefighter Domingo spoke to the excited youngsters about fire safety at home, as well as school. Domingo began his presentation by showing a short video about the dangers of fire, methods of avoiding injuries and how firefighters work to protect our children and community. Following a brief question & answer session with the youngsters, Mr. Domingo dressed in his protective

gear which included a colorful helmet, gloves, boots, breathing apparatus, jacket and pants. He allowed the children to touch the protective clothing, and stressed that children should not be frightened by the fireman’s protective clothing, mask or tools. Members of the West Sayville Fire Department visit Connetquot district schools to promote fire safety and education. Students had the opportunity to practice ‘stop, drop and roll’ in the event any of them should have their clothes catch on fire. Another important lesson to be learned was not to search for toys or

pets in the event of fire in the home … get out of the house and wait for mom and dad outside. The teachers and all the students, thanked Assistant Chief Domingo for visiting the Arthur Premm School to talk about fire safety. The children were reminded about the safety lessons they learn at school, and were asked to share firefighter Domingo’s safety tips with their siblings and parents at home. Before returning to the fire house, Assistant Chief Domingo distributed ‘junior’ fire fighter head gear, and colorful fire safety booklets to each of the excited youngsters!

Tri-M Inductions On October 8th, Ms. Susanne Bailey, Principal of Connetquot’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS), and Tri-M Honor Society Advisor Melissa Johnson, welcomed family and friends to the school’s 4th annual Music Honor Society Induction ceremony. Mrs. Johnson addressed the students and parents as she explained the significance of membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society. She expressed her pride in accepting, and congratulating, the newest inductees, and their parents. Mrs. Johnson was proud to name the 26

new members, as well as recognizing the 30 continuing members of the OBMS Tri-M Honor Society. OBMS Principal Ms. Susanne Bailey was also inducted as an ‘Honorary’ member of Tri-M. Tri-M is an honor society for music students of outstanding academic accomplishment with focus on community and school service. Connetquot’s Director of Music Education, Mr. Jon Michael Lasher, added that “…the organization promotes student leadership, and these students are the future leaders of the music department, their school,

and community.” Lasher was a member of Tri-M as a Connetquot HS student. Connetquot School District Board of Education Vice-President Mr. Leo R. Marinick and Trustee Mrs. Milynn Augulis were on hand to congratulate the students and their parents. A reception was held, following the ceremony, at the OBMS cafeteria for the inductees, their families, staff and friends. Congratulations to the current, and newly inducted, members of the Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School Tri-M Honor Society!

District Superintendent Mrs. Lynda G. Adams and Assistant Superintendent Dean Mittleman commended the members of the Board of Education for their collective years of guiding thousands of CCSD students. Thanksgiving Pull-Out

The Bayport-Blue Point School District introduced a multidimensional plan for the future of education in its schools this November. The design focuses on the vision for education as well as the priority areas for making this a reality. The design, Thinking Forward, stems from a yearlong conversation with the community about what all stakeholders want for the district’s students and how best to align its efforts with those desired results. Thinking Forward reflects the district’s commitment to continually enhancing

its efforts on behalf of all students. As no one element ensures student success, the design is comprised of four components – Learning, Connections, Environments and Pathways. “Thinking Forward reflects a belief that organizations are either improving or declining; there is no status quo,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “While the challenges currently facing all school districts are real, we cannot allow these obstacles to prevent us from enhancing the experience of the 2,400

students who go through their K-12 years only once. By purposefully allocating our time, energy and resources, we will be able to develop scholars who possess the social, emotional and academic skills needed to be successful adults.” The community is encouraged to continually visit the “Thinking Forward” section of the district website, www. bbpschools.org, to learn more about ongoing efforts on behalf of all students in Bayport-Blue Point.

One strategy that was used was the clock method to locate the food on the plate, in that the potatoes were located at 3 p.m., therefore allowing the person to successfully locate their food. The evening was a huge success with significant positive feedback from those in attendance at this unique event. SILO will be holding this event again next fall and we will be publicizing this event in the future. SILO is the New York State Designated Center for Independent Living Services. It is a non-for-

profit Human Services Agency dedicated to working with people with disabilities, elderly individuals and their families. SILO provides over 27 programs and services throughout the Long Island Region. The ultimate goal is to provide the necessary support for people with disabilities and the elderly to live independently within their communities. On September 27th, the Suffolk Independent Living Organization held their First Annual Dinner in the Dark Fundraising Event at the Sea Basin Restaurant in Rocky Point. The goal was to allow attendees to participate in a firsthand journey to appreciate the challenges encountered by the visually impaired as they strive to become more independent. As each person entered the restaurant they were led to a table and promptly blindfolded, which would lead to a unique sensory experience. Each table included a visually impaired person that helped each blindfolded individual go through the steps necessary to

Scholarship Opportunities Suffolk Federal Credit Union is now offering local high-school seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. Suffolk Federal will award scholarships of $1,500 each to ten young deserving members. One scholarship winner will also receive an additional $2,500 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation which Suffolk Federal will match for a total of $5,000. To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending twoor four-year accredited educational institutions for

the first time in the fall of 2015. They must also be a member of Suffolk Federal. Applicants will be judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities as well as the quality of written essays.
