Bosti Elementary School’s fifth-graders for their performance of the 2016 “Cirque du Jour” circus event, held at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School. Bosti Elementary students worked for two weeks during physical education classes to learn special circus skills, tricks and activities. A great time was had by all.

Historical Presentation Libraries treasure and preserve the history of local communities. Knowing who and what came before, the words, memories and photos, bound in books, are precious resources for future generations. The Connetquot Public Library celebrates the history of our local community by presenting programs which highlight principal figures who changed its landscape. On Wednesday, November 2nd, local historian Philip Selvaggio visited the library to share his research on Oakdale resident and millionaire Frederick Gilbert Bourne. In the process of writing a book, Philip uncovered many interesting details of Bourne’s life. Philip grew up in Oakdale on Dale Drive, an area where much of this history resides. Through a series
of slides, he told the story of a man whose presence still impacts the local community. Frederick Gilbert Bourne was born in Boston, Massachusetts on December 20th, 1851 to Reverend George Washington Bourne and Harriet Gilbert Bourne. An Episcopalian minister, George Bourne also spent his time counseling young seafarers and their families. Though his father’s example, Bourne learned compassion and the importance of being part of a community. In 1860 Bourne and his family moved to New York City. His first two jobs were at the Atlantic Submarine Wrecking Company and the Mercantile Library in New York. During this time, Bourne also sang with the Mendelssohn Glee Club at the Old Trinity Church.
Here he met, Alfred Clark, the person who would alter the course of his life. Alfred’s father Edward was a founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company along with Isaac Singer. Upon his father’s death, Alfred urged Bourne to take an active role in the company. By 1889, Bourne became president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company, eventually earning one million dollars per year. During his tenure he initiated the installment plan, increasing sales and making sewing machines a “household item.” He served as president until his retirement in 1905. Aside from his work, Bourne had a family and a series of outside interests. He married Emma Sparks Keeler in 1875 and they had 12 children. Unfortunately some of these children did not survive their

Experiencing Democracy Academy Street Elementary School students in the BayportBlue Point School District recently gained valuable insight regarding the political process as the 2016 election drew to a close. During an assembly program with Sen. Tom Croci, the school’s fourthand fifth-grade students learned about the life of a politician as they asked the elected official about
such things as the process of becoming a senator and what qualities make for a successful candidate. Additionally, the school’s thirdthrough fifthgraders participated in a mock “debate.” Fifthgrade students took to the podium to represent a chosen presidential candidate and his/her running mate and spoke about their political stances on a number of issues. Leading up to the
event, the students put in an extensive amount of research in order to ensure they were best prepared to present the most factual and in-depth information. To keep everyone involved during the political themed-event, the students not only represented the candidates but also contributed to the debate moderator team, asking and brainstorming new questions to ask the “candidates.”
youth. While the losses affected him deeply, he chose generosity as a way of navigating his grief, a generosity he bestowed during time in Oakdale. The Bourne family occupied the first floor of the Dakota in New York City. The purchase of land in Oakdale, designated as a summer residence, overlooked the Great South Bay. Having designed the Singer buildings in Manhattan, architect Ernest Flagg, was assigned the task of building the Bourne estate, “Indian Neck Hall.” With over 100 rooms, it was the largest estate on Long Island in 1897. The property allowed Bourne to build stables for his collection of prized horses. Bourne’s keen interest in sailing allowed him to serve as the Commodore of the New York Yacht Club from
1903-1905 with his prized yacht, the Delaware. His adventurous spirit led to an interest in cars. Bourne owned several expensive automobiles, the Daimler Benz, his favorite. With a love of racing, he invested in the development of Vanderbilt Motor Parkway and participated in the Vanderbilt Cup Races. He served on several boards including the Long Island Railroad. Frederick Bourne died at the age of 69 in March of 1919 and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Bourne’s kindness drew no fanfare, but his generosity endures. Every Christmas the Bourne family gave a party and purchased gifts for all the children. From various charities to churches, hospitals to fire departments, the Bourne family invested in their community with a quiet
anonymity. Throughout Oakdale and West Sayville the presence of this legacy remains. For some who attended, the discovery of connections to a prolific history, sparked new and exciting branches of a community tree. The site of the Bourne mansion eventually became home to LaSalle Military Academy then home to a satellite campus of St. John’s University School of Graduate Studies. Recently, Amity Education Group purchased the site from the University. The beauty of the mansion, still visible and the spirit of Frederick G. Bourne’s humanity teems in those who acknowledge his place in our history.
Stepping Into Gym As part of the district’s ongoing efforts to proactively address the infrastructural needs of its facilities, the Connetquot Central School District recently completed a gym floor replacement project at Idle Hour Elementary School. District staff, administration and board of education members helped to mark the
completion of the project during a special ribbon cutting ceremony this fall. “The Connetquot School District is committed to providing the safest and healthiest environment for our children and staff and is constantly looking for ways to reach these goals,” said Assistant to the Superintendent John Allen. “We are excited
to have completed this flooring update at Idle Hour and know our students are eager to begin using the new space.” With this new gym floor provided, students will continue to be able to get the most out of their physical education activities within a safe and durable environment.

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the
fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.
Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

bookmarks with a class in India. After locating India on a map and discussing the geographic and cultural differences and similarities with the country, students fashioned individual
bookmarks with the help of librarian Karen Deaner. They chose materials, followed a procedure, and ultimately evaluated their bookmark while looking for ways to improve it.

Having a Ball Students, teachers, friends and family recently witnessed the flying colors and dazzling talents of Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School’s fifth-graders for their performance of the 2016 “Cirque du Jour” circus event, held at Oakdale-
Bohemia Middle School. Bosti Elementary students worked for two weeks during physical education classes to learn special circus skills, tricks and activities. Throughout the course of their training, students learned the skills necessary to work
as clowns, jugglers, stilt walkers and masters of the Diablo Stick. As a culmination to the study, each student had the chance to showcase their skills before the packed audience during a special evening performance.

Westy Self Storage, together with the East Northport Chamber of Commerce announces its support of St. Vincent dePaul Food Pantry located at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach by hosting a non-perishable food drive. The drive will run through December 15th. Westy Self Storage in East Northport will serve as a designated drop off location for donations. The Saint Anthony of Padua Parish Outreach consists of a dedicated group of parishioners who respond to the needs of others compassionately and professionally. They together bring people who are in need of assistance
with people who are trained to help them. Parish Outreach empowers those in need to help themselves. This program offers the parish community a way to respond to those among us who are hurting financially, emotionally and/or physically. Please support the community by dropping off a non-perishable food donation at Westy Self Storage in East Northport located at 4049 Jericho Turnpike, across from Barnes and Noble. “Food drives are critically important as we work to provide nutritious food for the hungry right in our area,” said Loriann Pineo of the East Northport

Frederick Marshall has always had a passion for music. He was in the Merchant Marine Band as a young man, which led to studio musician work and becoming a drummer in the “Big Bands” of the Era. When he retired from music, he focused that same passion into
learning how to paint using watercolors from books, classes and his wife Thelma. Throughout his retirement years, he became an accomplished watercolorist. Frederick is now a resident of Momentum at South Bay Rehabilitation & Nursing,
which sponsored an art show on his behalf on November 4th. This show was a complete success, from the works of art, to the hors d’ouvres and the champagne. Look for another event in the spring!

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:
Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for
long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative
condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,
including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.
Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report
from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.”

Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them, and that can help prevent the development of a resistance. Confirm need. Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identified. These illnesses may include
strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.
