onnetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently treated their kindergarten classes with a schoolyard filled with handsized pumpkins and balloons. Principal John Delio credits the PTA parents and his staff for creating a wonderful morning activity where the children were able to pick their own pumpkins, label and decorate them and then take them home for Halloween weekend.

The Connetquot Central School District Board of Education recently honored several middle school students for their achievements during the annual, Suffolk County-wide Battle Of The Books, a competition between all the Suffolk County Libraries which took place at The Javits Lecture Center at Stony

Brook University. The students were part of the Connetquot Public Library team. The competition gives students two months to read several books, and each library’s team battles for the top by answering 80 questions divided into four intense rounds. Out of the 41 participating Suffolk County libraries in

Battle Of The Books the competition, the Connetquot Public Library tied for 7th place. The Connetquot Public Library also received the Team Choice Award, a non-scoring award voted by other teams that determines which team other enjoyed battling the most.

Costume Donations Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students helped to make this year’s Halloween a magical one for those less fortunate by collecting hundreds of items during a schoolwide Costume Drive. The initiative, which was organized by the building’s fifth-grade

peer leaders, benefited the Long Island Women’s Empowerment Homeless Shelter in Brentwood, which currently houses 250 children. The peer leaders prepared for the drive by decorating the school’s hallways with colorful posters and creating a collection bin in

the main lobby to hold the donations. The generosity of the school’s family and staff resulted in the donation of more than 100 items – including accessories such as magical wands and masks – to this worthy cause.

Bayport-Blue Point School District teachers Kim Benedict, Jenn Kleiber, Stacey Loeffler, Lori Mandell, Ashely Olmstead and Ashley Silvering represented the district at the Council for Exceptional Children Annual Convention this October.

Under the direction of Beth Lakretz, the district’s co-teaching consultant, the teachers shared how to plan and implement differentiated lessons in co-taught classrooms. The presentation described the planning process, which includes implementing Common

Core Standards and co-teaching practices, differentiating instruction and creating modifications. The co-teaching teams shared their best practices at the convention based on lessons they had planned and implemented.

Anxiously Awaiting A Decision Waiting to hear back from a college is stressful! After applying “early decision” to a toptier college last month, I have begun the nervewracking time period that can only be likened to purgatory. Waiting for that admissions packet to land in my mailbox is truly the most anxiety provoking task that I have ever been subjected to. As tortuous as it was to apply to college, the wait is so much more stressful. Now that I have applied, I am starting to realize that my whole life has been a road leading up to this point. Every decision, every action

I have ever taken, will boil down to one letter. One decision. Whether I get accepted, rejected or even waitlisted, the decision from that university will shape the rest of my life. Some say it is all luck. Even if you are a stellar candidate, you still have a shot at rejection. I like to think that I am what many would call a “wellrounded student.” I am good in school, I have decent test scores, I am on a sport, I am involved in many clubs and I wrote a decent essay. Sadly, if I get rejected, none of these factors will matter. They wouldn’t carry any weight.

Even if you were to try your whole life to be exactly what a college would desire, you could still get turned down. There is no guarantee of admission. The entire college admissions process is one big gamble. If you don’t get in, it was not meant to be. If that particular college does not want you, another college will. The point that I am trying to make is that if you don’t get in, don’t sweat it. The place you spend your four years does not define you. Everything always works out for the best.

The Age Of Innocence By: Jamie Lynn Ryan To be a child once again, that carefree spirit, unconcerned by the world outside of our miniature universe – one of Barbie dolls and tea parties and recess and school friends – shielded from the stress of reality for as long as our parents can protect us. Back to that sense of innocence when we assumed that all those “best” friendships from elementary school would never fade… when we never anticipated a day that those relatives we loved so dearly would ever leave us… when all was right with the world – our world – and

we had no need or desire to look beyond the immediate. Some would say this sense of idealism was misplaced and only served to make the subsequent realities that much harsher; in fact, just a quick look at the children of today would suggest a great loss of that innocence I reminisce over now. And which is better? To grow up jaded, or to develop that cynicism over time? Or, better yet, to not let outside forces beyond our control shape our being to the point of losing our sense of self in the process? If only the right answer was always the simplest. So we grow up, and we

grow. And we realize that each day brings with it new obstacles and reality checks that we may have never anticipated. But this is life, as childhood becomes adulthood, and ultimately, this growth is all part of that process. We can’t have it any other way – and we shouldn’t want to. People come into our lives for a reason, this much is true. Sometimes they stay, other times they go; but either way, we are never meant to be the same. Although, there are definitely days when we could all use a little time on the swings at recess with our friends.

Woodhull Elementary School offers students a wide range of clubs and activities to enhance programmatic offerings. The building’s Lego Club is designed to encourage students to use their imagination, try out their problem-solving skills and cooperate with others. Students use Legos in a fun, hands-on and engaging way covering a diverse number of curriculum targets within science, technology, engineering and math. Activities are designed for two to four students working together. Each student can contribute to the process of designing, building and testing solutions. Grim Reaper Day As part of this year’s Red Ribbon Week, BayportBlue Point High School students and staff members participated in a number of activities focused on the importance of making good decisions. During the weeklong program, which was organized by the SADD Club, red ribbons were tied around the large trees lining the front of the high school. Students were invited to sign a pledge

against drinking and drugs and informational posters were placed throughout the school to inform readers of the staggering statics tied to drinking and driving. Mangano Funeral Home, announced today that it is kicking off a toy drive aimed at collecting toys for Long Island’s children. Toys collected in conjunction with City on a Hill Community Church will directly benefit underprivileged children on Long Island this holiday season. As you are aware, some children will feel left out and wonder if they too will experience the joy of Christmas. The faces of all children should light up on Christmas morning. The purpose of this project is to open our hearts to those children in our community

who could not otherwise have a special Christmas celebration. “There is nothing better than watching children open their gifts on Christmas morning,” states Sal F. Superintendent Search The Connetquot Board of Education has begun its search for a new superintendent with the assistance of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Eastern Suffolk BOCES is experienced in this process and the search for a new superintendent will be

conducted by Mr. Raymond Fell, Search Consultant. Mr. Fell and ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Gary Bixhorn, met with the Connetquot Board on July 16th, 2013 to review the search process and timeline. Community and staff

For the Sayville students in Mrs. Nicole Baryk’s Firstgrade class, HALLOWEEN was the perfect occasion to showcase their new knowledge about the skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems. “Our class began the EngageNY Body Systems domain in early October,” Cherry Avenue elementary teacher Mrs. Baryk explained, referring to the New York State learning tools and resources, available online, that support the common core curriculum. As the Engage NY website states: “the Listening and Learning Strand consists of a series of read-alouds organized by topics (called domains), many of which are informational in nature.” The goals of the Listening and Learning Strand aim at helping students acquire gradelevel language competency through listening. Students specifically build a rich vocabulary, and broad knowledge in history and science through carefully selected, sequenced, and coherent readalouds. Through this curriculum resource that introduced “Dr. Wellbody” and her lessons, Mrs. Baryk’s First-grade students learned about five major body systems, what foods makes a healthy plate, such medical heroes like Louis Pasteur, and all 40 points described by EngageNY (see the list below of learning points). “We even had two

These artistic costumes were completed just in time for Halloween. Mrs. Baryk was excited about the success of the lesson.

I never expected this unit to be pre-med, but I actually do believe that it sparked an interest and lit a fire for some of our Onesters. I think the true Core of teaching is not engaging, but rather, empowering - empowering our students with the confidence that they can reach the bar that has been set for them and still have fun doing it! “ In anticipation of Halloween, Mrs. Baryk’s parent volunteers lent a hand; “To culminate all our incredible work, our amazing parents threw a fabulous BodySystems party with healthy food choices!” Among some of the snacks offered, each student was delighted to add a peeled clementine, which resembled a mini pumpkin and a banana-ghost to their paper plates of goodies. “The students wore their anatomy costumes designed by our art teacher, Mrs. Laxton, and played games that had to do with some gory science fun,” Mrs. Baryk was thrilled to report. “The students had to identify body systems and body parts hidden under boxes.... We touched ‘skin’ (soft tortilla coated in oil), ‘nerves’ (cooked spaghetti), and even ‘stomachs’ (apricots)!” And they loved it!

Memorial Garden Dedicated Friends, colleagues and family members attended the September 26th dedication of the Agnes Gaeta Memorial Garden, at Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS). Dozens of fellow teachers, former students, administrators and family friends attended the afternoon dedication, and reception, to honor the memory of a wonderful teacher, and friend. Agnes Gaeta (Lupinacci) was a beloved teacher and mentor at Ronkonkoma Middle School for more than 30 years. During that time she affected the lives

of thousands of youngsters, and colleagues, with her skills and kindness. Agnes passed away too soon, recently, and her RMS friends decided a Memorial Garden would be a loving method of remembering this wonderful friend, teacher, mom, sister and wife. RMS Principal Mr. Charles D. Morea, Assistant Principal Joseph Licato and close friends Debbie Galante, Heidi Edmonds, Jessica Unser and Danielle Donnadoni organized the design and construction of the memorial garden.

At the dedication Heidi Edmonds and Debbie Galante reminisced about the effect Agnes had on their lives, and those of her students. Agnes’ husband, Dr. Louis Lupinacci spoke of Agnes and how much she loved the Ronkonkoma community and its students. He also thanked everyone for the wonderful tribute to Agnes. The Memorial Garden is located in the peaceful courtyard at Ronkonkoma Middle School, just outside the classrooms Agnes used, to enrich the lives of her students.
