Academy Street Elementary School fourthgrader Keira Rooney is one step closer to winning the NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick Competition, as she earned top scores in the New York State championship held before a New York Jets game at MetLife Stadium this October. Select winners from the state championship will advance to compete nationally at this year’s

NFC championship game in February. Rooney, who was a finalist in the Long Island Championship, participated in the competition through the school’s physical education department. Academy Street’s third through fifth-graders took part in the annual program, which tested their ability to properly kick a football the furthest.

Six Academy students – fifth-graders Brendan Most and Hannah Woolsey, fourth-graders Keira Rooney and Ryan Costa and third-graders Ben Morris and Taylor DiBiasi – were named Suffolk county winners and competed in the Long Island Championships at the Annual Oyster Festival in Oyster Bay.

Paying It Forward

Dianna D’Amico, a special education aide at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) imagined a way to spread love, pay it forward, and bring smiles to people on Thanksgiving, especially those less fortunate who are dependent on food pantry assistance or live in temporary housing. Dianna created a campaign, 45 Pies in 45 Days on Facebook and Go Fund Me. She said, “The campaign began on October 13th, forty-five days prior to Thanksgiving. Contributors can sponsor a pie for $10 for a homeless family or a family in need. The pie(s) will be delivered prior to Thanksgiving.” Principal Sue Goltz approved the activity for ESBOCES students at Centereach Academic

Center to empower them to pay it forward and help community members. The four students involved in making the pies are Robert R., William Floyd UFSD; Gabriella C., Comsewogue CSD; Diana D’Amico, ESBOCES aide; Matthew V., Comsewogue CSD; and Pa’shaun M., William Floyd UFSD. These students are working toward their Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) Credential. They work together, take direction and responsibility, and earn hours and experience. They will receive the credential at graduation in June 2015. Matthew said, “I learned that you can be a student, a teacher, anyone, and you can make a difference in someone’s life.” The

students said they enjoyed working on this project because they all enjoy cooking and eating. They learned culinary skills and worked on their social skills while working side by side in the school kitchen. The 45 Pies in 45 Days exceeded its greatest expectations. With more than a month before Thanksgiving, over 200 pies have been commissioned to be baked for local shelters. D’Amico said, “Local establishments have donated to the campaign to cover the cost of supplies such as pie ingredients, boxes for the pies, and labels for the boxes. It’s as easy as pie. Sponsor a family in need for $10. Pies, smiles, and love will be spread to those less fortunate this Thanksgiving.”

Liam Harrison’s audition tape - his solo work on the trombone - must have blown the judges away! The Sayville Senior was one of four tenor trombonist chosen nationally to perform in the All-National Jazz Ensemble with the AllNational Mixed Chorus, Orchestra, and Band at the

National Association for Music Education (NAfME) held in the Grand Ole Opry, Nashville, TN for the threeday festival that took place in late October. As one of only nineteen performers in the entire Jazz Ensemble, Liam encountered a caliber of musicians, directors, and conductors who surpassed

his every expectation. Liam felt it was truly an honor to share this experience with the best in the nation. In addition to his demo tape, Liam’s performance last year in the All-State Jazz Ensemble, along with his updated resume, qualified him for this distinction. Congratulations, Liam!

Commended Student Dr. Richard G. Shear, Principal of Connetquot High School in Bohemia, recently announced that Kevin K. Phan has ben named a Commended Student in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by Dr. Shear to this scholastically talented senior. About 34,000 Commended Students

throught the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. “The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for MNSC. “These students represent

a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” Congratulations to Kevin K. They’re bright yellow, they sit around your child’s neck and they are the main reason as to why your child complained the first two weeks of school more than any other year prior. The new Massapequa High School student ID lanyards are known to everyone in the school as a cumbersome burden that serves no real and effective purpose. This new form of “security and safety enforcement,” as Doctor Barbra Williams puts it, “is to make sure that the security staff can prevent unwarranted intruders from entering the school.” Robert Catinella, a Massapequa High School Senior, compares the new lanyards to “dog collars” and, just like a dog, when a student forgets his collar, he or she is subjected to unfair punishment. When one person forgets his or her “collar,” they are given a lunch

detention, meaning that they cannot go outside for lunch for the day. In addition, that lunch detention can be found on one’s permanent record. For some kids, this could mean everything when it come to getting into a good college. Who is to say that these lanyards, and the supposed purpose they serve, will even be a factor in a high stakes situation? If the school district wants to increase safety, they need to increase security, not tag their students with an ID card that serves no other purpose other than to act as a red flag for security guards. And, to be completely honest, a yellow nylon lanyard isn’t going to stop any one crazy person from getting into a school building. Rumors have been circulating in the building between the staff and students that these lanyards will soon have a magnetic strip in them, which will be required

to be used in order to enter the school. Teachers have to do this in the morning to gain access into the building before the students. Along with every student arriving in the middle lobby for all periods, this new policy, if implemented for the 2015-2016 school year, would make an already broken system chaotic and inefficient. Massapequa School District is not alone in this new wave of “smart safety.” Students in Farmingdale, Amityville and Copiague high schools are being subjected to this plague too. The only way to fix the problem of school safety is to actually address the issue properly and efficiently. In this post Sandy Hook school shooting society we live in, we must not forget that, as a community, we should be pushing for safety and not some false sense of security.

Ready, Set... Ready Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Getting ready, for a girl, is a complicated affair. Rare is the female who can simply roll out of bed, jump in and out of the shower in 5 minutes, throw on the first outfit she pulls out of the closet, skip the makeup and extensive hair prep – and just go. I admire those who can, really, I do. Imagine how many hours, days, weeks even, that are saved over the course of just one year – time that could be spent out and about, actually living. But no, most of us have a whole routine, one that,

if anything, becomes lengthier and more complex the bigger the occasion. Like a weekday wedding, for instance. Forget attempting to go into work, leave a little early and freshen up at home on the fly. No, I need to take the entire day off, allotting at least a good five/six hours to the beautification process. Crazy? Perhaps. But who wants to rush? It’s nice to have some time to kick back and relax, allow plenty of time for hair mishaps, smudged makeup, chipped nail polish, runs in your pantyhose, traffic… all

the wonderful nuisances that only seem to happen when you have somewhere important to go. Of course, in the end, people rarely notice all the effort. For the 5th year, the Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk, scheduled to take place in Long Island on Saturday, December 6th, will bring runners and families together to raise funds to fight and cure arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. The annual festive event, which features a holiday costume contest, kids’ fun run, music and a sponsor expo, will be held at Hofstra University at 10 a.m. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Hundreds of Long Island residents including competitive and recreational runners, walkers, corporate teams and families are expected to participate in the Jingle Bell Run/Walk this year. The race is run on a USATF-certified 5K course with finisher awards in each age bracket. “Arthritis affects more than 50 million Americans, or roughly one in five adults,” said Jennifer Regan Haight, Regional Director of the Arthritis Foundation Long Island Chapter. “Contrary to popular belief, arthritis is not an ‘old person’s’ disease. Two-thirds of people with arthritis are under the age of 65.” More than 300,000 children also live with arthritis including tenyear-old Sean Carlo, this year’s Jingle Bell Run Youth Honoree, who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis at age four. “When people think of arthritis, they automatically think of minor aches and pains, which is far from the truth,” said Regan Haight. “Various forms of arthritis can seriously affect joints, muscles, internal organs and eyes, and the disease claims the lives of nearly 10,000 people each year.” Voted as one of the nation’s “Most Incredible Themed Races,” the

Continuing with the Bayport-Blue Point School District’s tradition of honor and excellence, James Wilson Young Middle School recognized the scholastic achievements of 42 eight-graders and induced them into the building’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society this October. During the ceremony a variety of speakers addressed the inductees and encouraged them to embody the founding

Current members also spoke in detail about each of these attributes while leading the candle lighting ceremony and the school’s band, chorus and orchestra provided musical interludes. All 42 inductees exhibited their first act of service by donating one or more food items to a local

food pantry. To qualify for induction, all applicants were required to meet a strict set of criteria. This included: a 92 unrounded, unweighted raw average throughout the last two marking quarters of sixth-grade and all four marking quarters of seventh grade; 10 or more hours of community service; involvement in school sports or clubs and a personal essay describing why they believe they should be a member.

Splashes Of Hope previously sponsored four mural panels in the jail’s Visiting Room. The mural was painted over five weeks during the months of September and October. Over the course of the project, participants in the Sheriff’s Youth Tier Initiative received both classroom and hands on instruction in the art of mural painting. Larsen, a lecturer at the Parsons New School in New York City, worked with the incarcerated youth several days a week to produce the massive eighty-five foot mural in the jail’s main corridor. The mural

depicts soothing scenes of nature and water, as well as a bridge which is meant to evoke a sense of passage to brighter times. More than 15 male youth worked on the project. A second phase, which will begin in the coming months, will include young incarcerated women. The unveiling was attended by Splashes of Hope’s Director of Operations and Muralist, Diana Fogarty, the artist, Kirk Larsen, Theresa Santmann, the project’s sponsor, several of the incarcerated youth who worked on the projects,

and members of Sheriff DeMarco’s staff. Sheriff DeMarco praised the organization and thanked everyone at Splashes of Hope for their continued support, “I am touched by Ms.

Santmann’s generosity and I thank everyone at Splashes of Hope for making this project a success. It undoubtedly left an impression on the youth who participated by imparting some confidence

and helping them to realize their talents. It also brightened up the hallway for our staff, and presents a positive image for all of the inmates who come through the facility.”

COMMUNITY CLEANUP - The Holbrook Beautification Committee partnered with the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce to promote the clean-up and beautification of Holbrook’s main roads and sidewalks.
