onnetquot Central School District’s Duffield Elementary School recently welcomed two new fifth grade students, Edward Gutierrez and Isabella Satalino, to the community. The new students were introduced to their “Bee Buddies” program mentors, who are trained how to assist new students managing the stressful transition to a new school. Two elementary school students in each class are chosen to be “Bee Buddies.”

There are few things more frightening for a family than discovering that a loved one with a cognitive disorder has wandered away from home. As the hours go by, the hopes of finding these individuals start to dwindle. And, even if they are found, there is an increased risk of them straying once again. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) has been working with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office in dealing with wandering adults with dementia as part of the Project Lifesaver program. A non-profit organization, Project Lifesaver aims to increase the location and recovery rate for those who wander off due to Alzheimer’s, dementia, Down syndrome, autism and other related cognitive conditions. Accomplishing this in a timely fashion not only reduces the possibility of injury, but has proven to

Subsequent to the Conference, Joan Motley, Outreach Coordinator for ADRC, invited the Sheriff’s representatives to speak at ADRC’s Caregiver Support Groups. The Sheriff’s Office conducted six presentations at ADRC’s caregiver support groups, which resulted in many families enrolling their loved ones in the program. ADRC has offered a courtesy table to the Sheriff’s Office at the West End Walk, which was held in August, where attendees learned about the importance of the Project Lifesaver program. The Sheriff’s Office has also been invited to attend ADRC’s East End Walk in October and will collaborate with ADRC in several speaking engagements that are on ADRC’s calendar for the remainder of 2015. “ADRC is well-known as the regional leader of care, support services and education programs for families battling Alzheimer’s disease,” says Officer Bryan Stoothoff, Aide to Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco. “Joan and Mary Ann are extremely receptive to our program, as they recognize the extreme need for incorporating Project Lifesaver throughout agencies in Suffolk County.” Using the ADRC informative palm card in conjunction with their training, law

Enjoying delicious soups with family and friends was as memorable as ever at The Eighth Annual “Empty Bowls” fundraiser - a Sayville High School Art Club event in recognition of National Hunger Awareness Month (October). New recipes and some returning favorites were homemade by teachers, staff, families, and such local merchants as Café Joelle (Autumn Bisque Soup) and Green Pear Catering, while sides also included fresh salads and
rolls. For the price of the $10 admission, attendees not only enjoyed their dinner fare, but they were able to select a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic bowl created by Sayville High School Art students and teachers. Empty Bowls, which is a fundraiser for the Sayville Food Pantry, was organized by the High School Art Club under the supervision of advisers Evan Hammer and John Verschure, with the assistance of Art Department Chairperson
Debbie Urso, the National Art Honor Society run by Jennifer Berotti, and supported by the entire Art department districtwide. Many thanks go to the student volunteers (see list) who either sold the unique hand-crafted bowls (which are both dishwasher and microwave safe) or ladled the soups to hungry customers. By the time everyone had their fill at the well-attended supper, the fundraiser had collected more than $1,500 for the Sayville Food Pantry!

Enterprising Students The new class offering, Virtual Enterprise International (VEI), was only launched in September at Sayville High School, but the students in both Mr. Chad Cross’ and Mr. Bryan Coon’s classes quickly coordinated and prepared to showcase their business savvy at the VEI Business and Entrepreneurship Leadership Conference held in early October. “Both Mr. Cross and I are teaching separate VEI classes.” Technology/ Business Department Chairperson Bryan Coon explained about the new course offering. These two classes are independent of the other “with the students in each class starting up a totally different type of business.” This year, the
two VEI companies were Ohana Surfboard and a 24/7 Meals. At the conference, a representative from the two Sayville “firms” gave a 30-second “elevator pitch” (a short summary used to quickly and simply define a process, product, service, organization, or event) before an audience of over one-thousand business leaders, college administrators and professors, high school teachers and students in the Tilles Center for the Performing Art at LIU Post. For Mr. Cross’s VEI class, Hunter Bauland (12th grade) spoke as the Chief Operating Officer of Ohana Surfboard Company. He explained in his pitch that the Sayville based company designs and manufactures
surfboards, sells them on their company website, and will ship globally at a flat rate. For Mr. Coon’s class, Jack Saracino (12th grade) was the Chief Executive Officer from the firm 24/7 Meals and gave his 30-second elevator pitch to explain the offerings and benefits of the virtual firm he represent “Both students did a terrific job delivering 30-second “elevator pitches,” Mr. Coon said. “It was an invaluable learning experience for both classes. I was very impressed and proud of both of our firm speakers,” Mr. Cross added. These enterprising students have just begun to explore their business options with the new Virtual Enterprise International.

For months, I’ve been agonizing over what will be one of the biggest choices of my life. During the fall, high school seniors from all over the world fill out their applications and make their college decisions. For me, it turned out to be an easy choice. I have decided to apply early decision to the University of Miami. Only time will tell if my dream of attending “The U” will become a reality. I am looking forward to potentially spending the next four years alongside my brother, who is currently a sophomore at the University of Miami. Although he transferred there - and I’m applying straight out of high school -
we both realize that Miami will provide opportunities for us that cannot be found anywhere else. The vast challenges and possibilities that can potentially be afforded to me by the University of Miami are enticing. I am excited to undertake the next chapter of my life, and I can only hope that chapter takes places in Coral Gables. When I attended the Manhattan Information Session on October 22nd, I was amazed by the presentation. The speakers detailed the financial aid process, the historic football dynasty and the stellar academic reputation associated with the University of Miami.
After the event, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Goldman, the Assistant Director of Admissions. He was happy to answer all the questions that I had regarding the admissions process and left me feeling comfortable about my choice to apply early decision. I was impressed with how knowledgeable and professional he was. I would recommend attending an information session like this to anyone interested in applying to institutions of higher education, and more specifically, The U. That evening truly sealed the deal; I want to be a Miami Hurricane in the fall of 2016.

In this role, the Sheriff and his officers will be responsible for training law enforcement agencies south of Albany that wish to launch the Project Lifesaver program in their jurisdiction. The Nassau County Police Department has since been trained on the program and will be launching their program in the near future. “We are proud to work with the Suffolk Sheriff’s Office in providing the palm cards as part of the Project Lifesaver program,” says Ms. Malack-Ragona. “The cards have proven to be very successful in helping to find those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and have wandered from their homes. Law enforcement can bring the person home sooner, ensuring the person’s safety and easing the family’s fears. At the 3rd Annual AllElementary Duathlon, excitement was as sharp as the crisp October air. Bringing bikes of all shapes and sizes, wearing hats and thermal outerwear, and sporting colorful helmets, all 418 elementary school student-athletes geared up at 7:30 for the early Saturday-morning start of two events - the Fun Run and the Duathlon. “These events are not races,” the Sayville Elementary School Duathlon organizers emphasized during opening remarks. “The students should be proud of their participation, no matter how long it takes to complete the course. There are two simple goals - to finish and to have fun doing it!” The Fun Run’s halfmile run around the Lincoln Avenue field was specifically for students in Kindergarten through First Grade who choose the
running event. After their race, the older students lined up for the Duathlon. On the “go signal,” the first wave of participants, Fifth-grade boys, who had assembled at the starting line, sprang into action. Fifth-grade girls started one minute after, and the succession of fourthgraders, third-graders, second-graders according to genders was similarly paced one-minute apart, until the First-Grade level, in which boys and girls ran together. After completing the first circuit around Lincoln Avenue fields, the “Duathletes” grabbed their bikes for the second part: a 2.5-mile ride on a designated route in the Lincoln Avenue vicinity. Once the bikers returned to the Lincoln Avenue School, they corralled their bikes in the transition area, and took the final 1/2–mile run around the field both to cross the official finish line and to achieve their
personal best. Cheering them on to a successful finish was a host of enthusiastic family members and volunteers. Everyone was flushed with enthusiasm by the time the last contenders crossed the finish line. Special thanks go to Duathlon organizers Gary Jensen, Lincoln Avenue Principal Dr. Michele LeBlanc, and Coach Bolger, along with Paula Troha for all their efforts coordinating the event. In his opening remarks, Mr. Jensen also acknowledged, “a large group of people who made this event possible.” Extra congratulations go to all the participants who made history; this year’s Third Annual AllElementary Duathlon was bigger than in the previous years, boasting a new record of 418 participants, compared to 288 last year and 255 the first year.
Batty Lesson As a conclusion to their studies on bats, Academy Elementary School secondgraders hosted a Bat Cave Museum to showcase the knowledge they gained on this nocturnal creature. Prior to the event, the students researched an
individual species of bat and created a diorama of the mammal’s habitat. They also created batthemed math story problems, wrote bat poems and bat paragraphs. The completed pieces were put on display during the event
for parents and family members to review. The project was truly multidisciplinary, as it made connections to the grade level’s science, math, literacy and English Language Arts curriculum.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Swim and Diving Team recently welcomed League I rivals Half Hollow Hills High School to a home game attended by dozens of family, friends and classmates. Despite being on the
short end of a 99-82 score, Connetquot coaches and fans were pleased with the effort, and look forward to improving as the season moves forward. Connetquot is currently 1-1 in the league standings, just coming off a big win against defending county champion Ward Melville
H.S. Connetquot is ranked among the top five teams with a shot at the Suffolk County title. This year’s team is led by senior captains Tara McCoy, Emma Breiner, Victoria Catizone, Kelsey Burchard and Emily Louschner.
Fun & Fitness Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students are focusing on physical fitness and cardiovascular activities as part of a new mileage club at the building. During their physical education classes, the
students work to obtain different lifelong fitness goals and promote overall health and wellness. In October, the students took part in a half-mile pumpkin run. Each student who completed the run earned a pumpkin token for a

necklace, and additional tokens for completing the activity under a specific time. The mileage club will host a themed event each month that focuses on a different physical activity or skill set.

The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund held its 3rd Annual Rock & Bowl event last week in an effort to provide three scholarshi ps for students looking to continue their education and promote aware ness among young people not to drink and drive. Over the past three years, the fund has offere d close to $10,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors at the Copia gue Memorial High School. This year, we hope to expand by offering the awards to other districts. Before Brittney was killed by a drunk driver only two days after high school graduation, she was always found helping some body, and even after she’s gone, she still is. The Fund and the scholarships are simple; being a 501c3 not-for-profit, all the money raised goes into a managed fund similar to your retirement 401k. This money earns interest and dividends. This earned money then goes to the awards, leaving the principal amou nt there for many years to come.

The Walsh’s lost a big piece of their family back in June three years ago, and feel it every day. Brittney’s mom, Cheryl said, “At times, it’s hard to smile and laugh, and the scholarship writing component helps us do it again.” What makes these three scholarships unique is they all require the scholar to write a 250-word essay detailing “The Funniest Thing You Ever Did” or “The Funniest Thing You Ever Saw.” Chery l continued to say, “You’d be surprised what these kids come up with.”

Perplexity of Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I find it truly fascinating how individuals can come away with such varying perspectives on the same topic, time and time again. Whether it be politics, societal issues or even something so lighthearted as this very column, everyone is entitled to their opinion – it’s just interesting how that view is arrived upon. Intelligent argument is one thing; shameless bullying quite another. For some, there doesn’t seem to be a middle ground. I suppose these polarizing issues are what make our world go ‘round. Discussion is the basis of everything, from school classrooms to kitchen tables to podiums
and soapboxes. Especially in this day and age of instant feedback, rarely can an opinion be expressed without an opposing argument cropping up almost immediately. Written forums are the best – or worst, as the case may be – since they afford people the anonymity of expressing often insulting, uneducated retorts. There is something about faceto-face conversation that affords a measure of respect, begrudging though it may be. Personally, I feel this world is full of enough tragedy and conflict without the need to touch on it in this column. South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers has always been a forum for celebrating our local school and community
happenings, of offering parents, teachers and coaches the opportunity to spotlight their children – the next generation of up-and-coming debaters. If you’re searching for controversy, there are plenty of mediums to find it. This need not be one of them. It seems to me that, whatever your lot in life, the best approach is always an objective one. Listen before you speak; think before you write; and respect before you reproach. Children learn what they see, and live what they learn; and there is more than enough hatred to go around without bringing it into the home or classroom, onto the field or stage. We, the adults, are the example. Let’s create one we can be proud to pass on.

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed forty-six recruits from Class 15-155 to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Friday, October 30th. As recent students of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated the Academy’s rigorous thirteen week training program. During their Academy
instruction, all officer candidates are required to successfully complete a variety of classroom and field instruction including, but not limited to, firearm safety and handling, defensive tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. They are also required to complete a community service requirement. Class 15-155 conducted a food drive for the non-profit organization
Island Harvest. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco welcomed the new Correction Officers during Friday’s ceremony. He shared his vision for the future of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility, and stated, “Correction Officers have one of the most difficult jobs in law enforcement, but it can also be one of the most rewarding.”

Learning from the Best More than 200 Connetquot Central School District 3rd 5th grade students, 7-10 years old, recently learned fire safety and fire prevention skills from Lakeland Volunteer Fire Department firefighters. After the lesson students also explored fire engines and a
fire safety smokehouse. As part of an Edith L. Slocum Elementary School initiative to teach students how to respond in dangerous situation, students learned how fire trucks respond to emergency calls and how each truck is equipped with water, fire hoses, foam
and a variety of rescue equipment for breaking and entering burning buildings. Students also had a chance to explore a mobile fire safety house and learn how to escape from a burning building safely.

Scholarship Opportunities Suffolk Federal is now offering local highschool seniors a chance to win scholarships for college. Suffolk Federal will award scholarships of $1,500 each to ten young deserving members. One scholarship winner will also receive an additional $2,500 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation which Suffolk Federal will match for a total of $5,000. To be eligible, students must be high-school seniors attending twoor four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2016. They must also be a member of Suffolk Federal. Applicants will be judged based upon their
academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities as well as the quality of written essays. Last year, Suffolk Federal awarded $20,000 in scholarships. “Each year, we welcome the opportunity to provide financial support to ten deserving local high school seniors as they begin their college experience and future career endeavors,” said William J. O’Brien, President & CEO of Suffolk Federal. “The Navy SEAL LT Michael Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation is honored to partner with Suffolk Federal in awarding a scholarship to a deserving high school graduate who is a member of this wonderful banking
