RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) cut the ribbon on a new beautiful permanent residence in Medford for formerly homeless veterans, which also celebrated new veterans housing in Riverhead and Mastic. The Connetquot High School Gymnastics team celebrated ‘Senior Night’ with flowers, gifts, cheers, and a nail-biting win over conference rival Middle Country HS at home on October 20th. The T-birds maintain their undefeated status with an overall record of 9-0.

Congratulations to Connetquot’s graduating seniors, Noel Cutinella, Melissa Giordano and Arianna Platti, and thank you for your dedication, and leadership. Arianna Platti placed third in the All-Around (34.9), while Alex Melchiona won with a

score of 36.625. The T-birds squeezed by the visitors with an impressive 168.5 – 166.3 outcome. Connetquot is looking forward to the Suffolk County Championships which are scheduled to begin shortly.

After combat, Patrick got hit right away with some less-than-ideal feelings, such as anxiety and depression. “I was totally lost and alone and I had pushed away everybody I loved and fear ruled my life. Anxiety and depression filled my day and I never thought that I would be able to be a regular person again,” said Donohue. “I avoided everything and everybody to best protect myself from the unknown. Finally when the pain became so great I had a moment of clarity and I asked for help. I checked into the VA hospital in Northport and began the process of what ultimately turned my life around.” Slowly but surely, things started to turn around for him. While he was in the VA hospital, he was exposed to some art and wellness programs that completely transformed the way he viewed himself. “I started writing poetry, meditating, and doing yoga and these activities had a profound impact on me.” He was looking to see if any veteran organization offered those programs and services outside of the VA and he didn’t find any, so at that time he decided that he would build it himself. Probably not even realizing how courageous and strong he really was, Patrick then wrote a business plan for what became this organization (Project 9 Line), so that he could bring art and wellness programs to other veterans on Long Island who might also be struggling. Little did he know that participating in those wellness programs and helping other veterans would become his calling and passion in life. In late 2020, Donohue was sworn in as an attorney and started his own law firm focused on veterans law, specifically VA disability and discharge upgrades. To this day he still runs that firm, and he also is an

Adjunct Professor at the Touro Law School Veterans Clinic, where he assists students with their veteran clients.

“Just a few years ago I had a tough time integrating and now I’m a productive and happy father, husband and attorney. I currently practice meditation, BJJ , yoga, play ice hockey, and I ﬂoat in a ﬂoat tank as often as I can. All of these practices are best for me as they bring me into the moment. I believe the best way to overcome trauma is to be in the moment as much as possible. In the past I have participated in many of Project 9 Line’s programs, including stand up comedy, which also helped me immensely on my journey.” Patrick still works on himself day to day, but knows that even if you face hard times, you can eventually get through them. Gymnastics Team Celebrates Senior Night With A Win

Homecoming—An Exciting Day with Parade, Skits, and NAIL-BITING Football! Enthusiasm was high for the return of Sayville High School’s Homecoming festivities on Saturday, October 16, 2021. Last year, this popular tradition had been eclipsed by COVID-19 and Homecoming 2020 was absent from the fall calendar. So this year, Homecoming 2021 was a welcome sign of normalcy with the following extra twists: The two undefeated Suffolk County Division III football teams—Sayville and East Islip—were preparing to clash in a fight to remain undefeated; Sayville football Alum and Notre Dame’s star player Jack Coan was visiting his hometown and would be watching from the stands; and There was a “friendly wager of dinner with their high school coaches,” made between WFAN Boomer & Gio radio celebrities and rivals Boomer Esiason (East Islip) and Gregg “Gio” Giannotti (Sayville)—loser would treat the winner— that was riding on the final score of this match up. Traditionally, during the week before the Homecoming Parade, Sayville High School classes demonstrate their competitive school spirit by participating in daily, themed activities—this year it was Formal Day, Tropical Tuesday, Country vs.Country Club, USA Day, and finally Spirit Day with a Pep Rally. Throughout the week, high school faculty noted and recorded the level of enthusiasm each class displayed. Those Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who wore their class colors or worked after hours to build tissue-paper floats and practice dance routines contributed to the scores. The week’s totals would be

tallied with those earned at the Saturday culminating events—the Homecoming Parade and Class Skits—by the Homecoming Judges, comprised of members of the Sayville Rotary Club. Their decision would be announced during the third quarter of the Football game. Saturday, October 16, 2021 was a lovely and temperate day for the Homecoming Parade. Colorful Floats, designed and built by students, were loaded onto flatbeds and lined up in front of the Sayville Fire Department. As the Parade moved through Downtown Sayville, cheering spectators were treated to the muchmissed pageantry. The blaring horns from the Sayville Fire truck and emergency vehicles led the marching groups. The Sayville Rotary were followed by the Sayville Teachers Association. Squads of Sayville Youth Cheer marched before the Sayville High School and Middle School Cheerleaders and a small army of Football Youth Club members kept step with their coaches. Then came the main attraction—the High School Class floats based upon Musical Genres. The Freshman float depicted a large roller skate to represent Disco Music, the Sophomore float with hay bales and scarecrows smacked of Country Music, the Junior Float displayed MTV in big letters for Pop Music, and the Seniors showcased a large guitar and their exuberance for Rock and Roll. Right before the game, the Freshmen and Sophomores performed their skits. This was immediately followed by the Sayville Football team charging through the Sayville Banner onto

the field. Once Sayville High School Junior Amelia Wells sang the National Anthem—her extraordinary voice bringing goosebumps of awe to the thousands of standing spectators—the game officially began. A tense first quarter— with Sayville behind— added to the already charged atmosphere between teams. Even though Sayville pulled to a small lead right before halftime, there were no guarantees who might win the game. During halftime, the Juniors and Seniors took the field to perform their skits. As the second half of the game resumed, back in the Press box, the Sayville Rotary Club Judges began their challenging work to decide which of the classes deserved First place. The Judges followed a criteria based upon the week-long spirit totals provided by the faculty, the number of participants in the parade, the float construction and visual appeal, the choice of music and choreography, the enthusiasm as well as the thematic cohesion before they could render their final decisions. Once it was all tallied, the classes were ranked: Seniors came in First, Junior were a close Second, Freshman were Third, and Sophomores were Fourth. Special thanks to the Rotary for their efforts: President Amy Hutchison, President Elect Drew Baldwin, Rotarians: Chris Imperato, Chamber President Eileen Tynzar, Debbie Walsh, Jillian Cassar, Pam Raymond, Fern Spies, Chris Olsen, and Sue Kubelle. Oh, yes, the game? It was a decisive victory for the Sayville Flashes with a final score of 51-44 over East Islip! Bon appetite, Sayville coaches!

SAYVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS CONQUER!!! - At the Sunken Meadow Cross Country Invitational on October 14, the Sayville Middle School Cross Country teams ran well and did an amazing job conquering the hilly course—one of the toughest in New York State. The Girls team won their race and Dylan Walsh placed second overall in the Boys’ race. State lawmakers gathered at the Long Island Welcome Center on the Long Island Expressway to commemorate the success of their hard work to address safety and efficiency concerns on the Long Island Expressway. The team of legislators, including members of both the state Senate and Assembly, were able to successfully direct attention to and ensure state infrastructure resources were dedicated to fixing the LI Expressway. The governor’s office announced last week that the project would replace more than 280 miles of pavement on key stretches of the LI Expressway in Suffolk County, significantly improving the mobility of the hundreds of thousands of motorists travelling between Long Island and New York City every day. In addition to hundreds of miles of new road in Suffolk County, the project will also address issues

with entrance and exit ramps in Queens at Kissena Boulevard, Utopia Parkway and Lewis Boulevard. “I want to thank the Hochul administration and the DOT commissioner for hearing our pleas and for advancing the schedule of paving the LIE from Exits 47-65 to fix the unsafe conditions for motorists and motorcyclists,” Assemblyman Keith P. On October 1, representatives from POSCO, a South Korean steel manufacturer, recognized Sal Scarlato, President, Korean War Veterans Association, Department of New York, at a special ceremony at the Col. Connecting Military Parents And Children, One Story At A Time (StatePoint) For deployed service members who are also parents, being away from their kids is often the hardest part of the job. This is why the United Service Organizations (USO) has prioritized connecting military parents with their families. One way to bring service members a reminder of home is through USO entertainment tours, the most famous tour veteran, of course, being legendary comedian Bob Hope. Hope’s legacy of service lives on today through the Bob Hope Legacy Reading Program.

Bringing story time ondemand around the globe, the program connected more than 39,000 military families around the world through reading in 2019 alone. Service members visit participating USO locations, record themselves reading their child’s favorite story and the USO ships that recording and book home to loved ones. Likewise, military kids can record themselves reading a book and share the story time memories with their parents serving overseas. Additionally, local USO reading events encourage kids to use their

creativity and complete a craft that complements a story’s theme. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and many locations had to temporarily shut their doors, this did not deter USO volunteers and staff from finding innovative ways to continue their efforts safely. USO Erbil in Iraq put their ingenuity to work and outfitted the back of a pickup truck with a makeshift trifold to serve as a reading “room.” They then decorated the inside of the room and packed up a box of books, some props and a chair. The USO team drove the truck

all around base, stopping outside popular locations as well as remote areas to reach as many service members as possible with their new, unofficial “Bob Hope on the Road” reading room. Long Island Community Hospital has secured $2.5 million over five years through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to combat the rise in overdoses here in Suffolk County. These funds will allow for the expansion of evidence-based screenings in the hospital’s Emergency Department and medical floors to identify patients who have a substance use disorder. Once identified, these patients can then receive medication-assisted treatment in conjunction with supportive outpatient services. These services include individual, group, or family counseling, peer support and community connections, all offered through the LI Community

Hospital Outpatient Chemical Dependency Program in Shirley. “These funds will give us the tools we need to expand and enhance opioidrelated services and they couldn’t come at a more appropriate time, as the nationwide increase in drug overdose deaths over the past 18 months is certainly hitting home in our communities,” said Richard T. Margulis, President and Chief Executive Officer at Long Island Community Hospital. “This is an opportunity that enables us to identify patients in need of help, provide treatment, and facilitate a direct connection to followup care with an outpatient program, including the one we operate in Shirley.”

The program is grantfunded for the next five years, allowing LI Community Hospital to integrate medicationassisted treatment into workflows, making it a standard component of clinical care for patients. Connetquot/East Islip Swim/Dive Team Celebrate Senior Night With Impressive Win

The Connetquot/EI Swim and Dive team hosted the team from Huntington/Whitman on October 21 and recognized its graduating seniors by earning a 97-89 win! “Our medley relay did a season best time” (2:08.52), according to T-bird coach Alex Scichilone. “There were also many lifetime ‘best’ achievements as well by Grace Platti, Carly Manfredonia Kylie Martiniz, Jess Hendricks, Ella Causin, Jasmine Evans and Karina Fitzpatrick.” The following seniors were recognized by the large, loud and supportive, crowd of family, friends and fellow students: Morgan Cassidy, Karina Fitzpatrick, Jessica Hendricks, Carly Manfredonia and Morgan Shurgin. The seniors were showered with love, funny anecdotes by their teammates, flowers and gifts.
