In an effort to ensure that children are making healthy choices and staying safe Connetquot’s Edward J. Bosti and Idle Hour elementary schools recently hosted important educational programs centered on the topics of stranger danger and saying no to drugs and alcohol. Through an interactive puppet presentation, provided by Matt Barbis and Patrick Chierichella, Bosti students learned
about the dangers that can exist in dealing with strangers. Throughout the event, the presenters spoke about strategies students can develop with the help of their families to minimize those dangers. The program was provided courtesy of the Rose Brucia Foundation. Idle Hour Elementary School students and staff learned about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle during a

For the annual Biography Day on October 31st, fabulous fifth-graders at Islip’s Maude S. Sherwood Elementary School dressed up as and acted the part of their favorite biographical characters, including
figures from history, science, politics, music, cinema and sports. After a parade in the hallways, the students took their places in the school gym, ready for the arrival of parents and classmates.
The fifth-graders then roleplayed as their individual characters, displaying the depth of their research and the cleverness of their costumes.

This morning Deputy Presiding Officer welcomed home Lance Corporal Matthew McGiff before the start of the 2nd annual Suffolk County Marathon. A 2014 PatchogueMedford graduate, Lance Corporal McGiff returned
Saturday evening from a deployment in Iraq and was met by a Boots on the Ground NY escort at JFK. He ran the 5K with his father and brother; his sister ran the halfmarathon with his cousin. The marathon, half-
marathon and 5K started in Patchogue Village. More than 2,500 runners participated in the race and all net proceeds from the event will go toward expanding veterans’ services in Suffolk County.

Good Deeds In a recent effort to promote the importance of kindness and compassion, Idle Hour Elementary School teachers and staff in the Connetquot Central School District have implemented a “Blue Card” initiative to recognize those students in the building caught doing something that positively reflects their school.
Students are rewarded “Blue Cards” for such tasks as helping other students carry their books, returning money they found in the hallway, or behaving extremely well on the bus. Once a student is given a blue card, they are met with positive praise from the office staff and the principal, and are rewarded with a small
token of appreciation for their positive behavior. November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.
The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until
then, let’s try to enjoy the remainder of Autumn, the harvest season. Let’s work on planning our Thanksgiving menus and football-watching marathons if we must; but mostly, let us all work on finding things to be thankful for in our lives. Trust me, the Christmas sales and songs will still be there at the end of the month. The spirit of giving doesn’t need to coincide with actual, tangible gifts, nor does it need to wait for any particular occasion. It’s a feeling, an attitude, a sense of appreciation which should be embraced no matter the time. Sure, things can always be better; but they can also always be worse. Thanksgiving is as good a time as any to remember this.

Play for Peace

In 2011, when Legislator Rob Calarco was elected, he carried on the tradition of presenting the tournament. The mission of Long Island Head Start is to provide a comprehensive learning environment to children, respectful of their culture, and to assist families in reaching self-sufficiency through the combined efforts of parents, community, and staff. The donation will be used to support local programs.
In an effort to instill a lifelong love for reading, sixth-graders at BayportBlue Point School District’s James Wilson Young Middle School were recently asked by their teachers to document themselves reading in fun and peculiar places. This “Books Calling” initiative is based off of a
similar project developed by 23-year-old Slovakian Jakub Pavlovsky, an avid reader who began to post pictures of himself to various social media accounts to portray that reading can be done just about anywhere. With Mr. Pavlovsky’s idea in mind, students in Kelly Petrosino’s and Jennifer
Carpenter’s classes used their creative talents to come up with unique ways to show that they too could read just about anywhere and enjoy it just as much. Students’ ideas included reading on park benches, tree stumps and even in mid-air while bouncing on a trampoline.
The Connetquot Immediately following announced as third-place High School Marching the parade, they were finishers. Band continues to wow audiences this school year by performing their show stopping routine on the Marie Laura local and regional levels. On October 7th, Gershow Recycling joined sponsors and participants of the eighth annual Play for Peace/Jugando Por La Paz Soccer Tournament at Long Island Head Start in Patchogue to present the school with a check in the amount of $2,000. Throughout the month of October, second-grade students at BayportBlue Point School District’s Academy Street Elementary School studied everything there is to know about bats by individually researching a specific species and creating dioramas of their bat’s habitat. As a culmination to their unit, the students presented all of their learnings in a “Bat Cave” museum, where their detailed dioramas of the bat habitats were on full display. Knowledge is Power Sixth-grade students of Connetquot’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently attended a powerful and highly informative assembly led by school music teacher, Dr. Frank Saladino, on the importance of showing respect toward one another. Aided by photographs
displayed on the projector screen, Dr. Saladino spoke to students about his difficult upbringing and urged them to always show kindness and compassion to others. Dr. Saladino’s reflections of his past kept both students and staff enthralled, and his message of reporting misconduct resonated with

National Recognition In recognition of her accomplishments both on and off the lacrosse field, Bayport-Blue Point High School student-athlete Alexandra Alliegro was recently named a school winner in the prestigious Wendy’s High School Heisman program. According to their website, the Wendy’s High School Heisman program recognizes exceptional high school seniors and
their achievements in the classroom, on the field and within their community. To be considered for the honor, a student must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better, be proven leaders and role models within their school and community, and perform in at least one of the 43 school sponsored sports recognized by the International Olympic Committee in the Summer
and Winter Olympic Games or the National Federation of State High School Associations. As a school winner, Alexandra now has the opportunity to continue in the recognition program for the chance to be named a state and/or national winner. As a part of a cultural initiative to learn more about the locations of foreign countries, third-grade students at Connetquot’s John Pearl Elementary School recently exchanged bookmarks with a class in India. After locating India on a map and discussing the geographic and cultural differences and similarities with the country, students fashioned individual bookmarks with the help of librarian Karen Deaner. They chose materials, followed a procedure, and ultimately evaluated their bookmark while looking for ways to improve it.

Healthcare professions continue to be among the most desirable careers in the U.S. In a 2016 U.S. News survey on The Best Healthcare Jobs, Physician Assistant ranked #4 with a median salary of $95,820; Physical Therapist ranked #12 with a median salary of $82,390; and Occupational Therapist ranked #17 with a median salary of $78,810. United We Stand Connetquot Central School District recently took part in the annual “United We Stand Week/ Red Ribbon Week” as an opportunity to teach students the importance living an active and healthy lifestyle. In honor of the week’s theme, Idle Hour and John Pearl Elementary School students had the chance to learn about the dangers of smoking during assembly programs conducted by representatives from the Suffolk County Department of Health. Throughout both programs, the speakers used multi-media presentations and various interactive experiments to explain the power of
nicotine and the effects of tobacco smoking on the body. A United We Stand Literacy Connection section was set up during a book fair at Cherokee Elementary School. This area helped to guide students in the direction of books that promote self-esteem and healthy lifestyle choices. Additionally, bulletin boards near the entrance of the school displayed photos of students and their families partaking in healthy activities, alongside photos of staff and students who posed for “Drug-Free Selfies.” Helen B. recently welcomed talented singer/storyteller Brian Chevalier as an opportunity to entertain the students while encouraging good health, personal development and making good choices in life. In celebration of Red Ribbon Week, an aerial photo in the shape of the letters “USA” was taken of the Slocum Elementary students and staff. Since its inception in 1985, parents, staff and the youth of communities across the country are encouraged to wear Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the drug issue in America.
