The Connetquot Central School District and Board of Education proudly recognized three heroic staff members for saving the lives of two students during the Oct. 11 Board of Education meeting. On Sept. 22, an Edward J. Bosti Elementary kindergarten student choked on a chicken nugget brought from home during lunch time. The student’s 1:1 aide, Lori Stellwagen,

and general education aide, Amy Loretta, sprang into action. They administered abdominal thrusts to dislodge the nugget from the child’s throat. On Sept. 27, a fifth grade student at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School was eating her lunch when she exhibited the universal sign for choking. Teacher’s aide Samantha Gallo was monitoring and noticed the student’s

cry for help. Ms. Gallo acted immediately and performed the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the food from the child’s throat. The Connetquot Central School District and the Board of Education is extremely proud of the selfless acts performed by all three aides and thanks them for ensuring the safety of each student.

Strategies For Coping With The Holidays Coping with the Holidays, a free forum sponsored by the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline and Support Program, will be held on Thursday, November 9 from 12 noon to 1 pm on zoom. Oncology social worker Cara Livoti, LCSW, offers expertise in the ways individuals can utilize healthy coping strategies during the holiday season. Participants will also learn about the multitude of support services offered from both hospital and community based social workers. Ms. Livoti has been a part of the NYU Langone care team since 2011 with extensive experience in supporting not only her patients, but their caregivers and loved ones.

In 2021 she began working specifically with the breast cancer patient population at NYU Perlmutter Cancer Center. Ms. Livoti is wellversed in the resources available through NYU PCC and the community for her breast cancer patients and takes great pride in providing comprehensive psychosocial care to those with which she works. The Bayport-Blue Point School District is pleased to announce Kim Rall as the recipient of the district’s Teacher of the Year award. The honor was announced during a recent board of education meeting. Each year, teachers nominate one another for this prestigious recognition. Ms. Rall has been with the district for 22 years and is currently a fourth grade teacher at Academy Street Elementary School. During the board of education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Hearney shared a story about an email he’d received from a parent, commending

Ms. Rall’s kind actions. He shared that while the family was dealing with an illness, Ms. Rall went out of her way to help the student to feel comfortable and even had the class create a quilt for the parent. “All of her students adore her. They talk about her and get excited when they see her, years after they’ve left her classroom. She is patient, kind and knows exactly what each student needs to be successful,” said Academy Street Elementary’s Literacy Coach Jennifer Corso. “As a colleague, Kim has welcomed studentteachers and has mentored new teachers. She works side-by-side with her

Simple Gestures To Support Our Veterans Veterans Day is commemorated each year on November 11 to honor the individuals who served in our armed forces. We cannot thank them enough for their service, but we can continue to do simple gestures to show our appreciation and support. · Provide a free meal. Offer to take out a veteran for breakfast, lunch or dinner. If you see a veteran eating in a restaurant, anonymously pay the bill for that person. If you own a restaurant, offer them a meal on the house. · Buy from veterans. Seek out and purchase from veteran-owned businesses. · Volunteer at a VA hospital. Spend time with veterans where they receive care for current health needs or past injuries suffered in combat.

· Participate in a parade. If your town hosts a Veterans Day parade, ﬁnd out how you can volunteer or be a part of it. Oftentimes parade oﬃcials enable youth groups, such as high school marching bands or scouting troops, to participate in the parade. · Ask a veteran to speak. If you work in a school or a community center, ask veterans to share their experiences with area youth. · Thank them for their service and ask how they’re doing. A simple “thank you” and “how are you doing” can go farther than you think.

Wenonah Giving Garden Benefits Local Pantries Fifth graders at Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District are helping fight food insecurity in their own community. Fifth graders, along with

members of the school’s garden club, have been harvesting fresh food to donate to local food pantries. It’s part of a project led by fifth grade teachers Jamie D’Andrea and Deena Kay, that

cycles through Wenonah students each year. Students begin planting the seeds indoors while it’s still cold outside. Each spring, fifth graders clean out Wenonah’s garden and bring the

seeds outdoors. Come summertime and into early fall, fresh produce is ready to be harvested by the next fifth grade class. Not only is Wenonah’s Giving Garden benefitting the community, but it

is also an opportunity for students to get their hands dirty and participate in exploratory learning. The garden has provided students with an outlet to connect with each other and the
