Serving to protect the freedom of the seas, the Navy is another branch of the military that reports directly to the Department of Defense. Among its many missions, the U.S. Navy serves to make the seas safe for travel and trade.

United States Air Force

The Air Force also reports directly to the Department of Defense and trains for and maintains global superiority in air, space and cyberspace. Air Force personnel fly planes, helicopters and even satellites.

United States Marine Corps

The Marine Corps is a component of the Department of the Navy. It carries out global missions on both sea and shore, and serves as an expeditionary force. Marines are a rapid-reaction team and are usually the first boots on the ground in a conflict.

United States Coast Guard

The Coast Guard safeguards maritime interests through both civil and military missions. The Coast Guard operates around the world and in domestic waterways and ports.

United States Army National Guard

The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty. Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations. The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary. The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief. Build Your Own Chair “Either I will ﬁnd a way, or I will make one.” - Philip Sidney When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge. I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry. When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers. Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain. It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview. My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there. The ball was starting to roll. After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position. For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again. Time went by (ﬁve years to be exact), when I had an epiphany. Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

And if I created it once, I could create it again. Once again, I dipped into my bucket of fairy dust and declared that I was going to build a syndicated interview column from scratch. In fact, it was my New Year’s resolution nearly one year ago. I didn’t know exactly how I would re-build these important relationships, get media outlets to come on board or get anyone to say yes to an interview, but I knew I was going to do it. Well, here we are, ten months later, and my portfolio of published and syndicated interviews is more substantial now than it was eight years ago before I ventured out on my own. My question for you to contemplate this week is this: Are you currently waiting for permission to do something you’ve always wanted to do? Is there something creative inside of you that wants to come out, but, “no one will give you the chance”? If a seat at the table is alluding you, it may be time to roll up your sleaves and build your own chair.

November’s Charity of the Month is:

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students. Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom. By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books! Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading. Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material. Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help! Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected! They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%! If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location. You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate. educational adventure into the rich history of Native American culture. The presentations were brought to the school courtesy of representatives of the Long Island-based “Journeys into American Indian Territory” program. Classes were divided amongst different parts of the school, including an outdoor activity session, and a museum/handson demonstration in the classrooms pertaining to different traditional Native American customs. During the museum portion of the day, Journeys into American Indian Territory Director Bob Vetter spoke about the tribes’ daily lives and gave students the opportunity to interact with genuine Iroquois and Algonquian artifacts. The students were informed that women of the tribe primarily gathered essential foods such as corn, beans and berries, while the men would hunt for meat with their go-to weapon, the spear. Celebrated Diamond The most celebrated diamond is the Koh-i-noor, which was presented to Queen Victoria in 1850 by the East India Company.

The Sayville Homecoming Parade sailed down Main Street in enthusiastic fanfare. Leading the way, the Sayville Fire Department truck rolled slowly through town, followed by members holding banners for the Rotary Club, the Sayville Teachers Association, and the Sayville Middle School, while squads of chanting cheerleaders from the High School and Middle School enlivened the crowds. Youth groups from both football and cheerleading accompanied by their coaches joined the march ahead of the parade’s main attraction— the class floats. As both the culminating activity of High School Spirit Week and the pregame celebration for the Sayville Flashes football game against East Islip on their home field, the Homecoming Parade showcased this year’s theme: “Cities.” Colorful and ingenious floats, constructed out of wood and tissue-paper, depicted London, UK (Freshmen), Mexico City (Sophomores), and New York City

(Juniors). However, the Seniors went for the Big Easy with gusto and showed extra carnival spirit by making three floats for their pick-New Orleans—including one for Jazz musicians playing The Saints Go Marching In and another designed coincidentally as…a streetcar named Desire. “Spirit Week went well,” said School Government Advisor Kathy Van Dorn. “It was a high-spirited, high-energy week filled with a lot of fun, with the seniors always in the lead.” Throughout the week, students participated in the daily themes (Monday – Hawaiian Day, Tuesday - Jersey Day, Wednesday - Patriotic Day, Thursday Hippie Day, Friday - Purple and gold), and every day, the social studies teachers recorded on tally sheets how much spirit each grade demonstrated. At tenth period, the tallies were collected by the Student Government and later charted for all to see. After an energizing pep rally on Friday, the final tally from School

Spirit week was given to the judges from the Rotary Club during the Homecoming Game. Once the Rotary Club judges observed the class spirit, the floats and the skits and incorporated the week’s numbers into their final tally, they made the decision. First place went to the Seniors, Second place to the Sophomores, Third to the Juniors and Fourth to the Freshmen. “Our Student Government was really happy with the outcome,” said Van Dorn. “President Jack Davis and Vice President Grace Aversano put a great deal of time and effort into the organization of the pep rally; With Superintendent Dr. John Stimmel and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Christine Criscione attending, it was a great success.” Homecoming 2018 was a success on all counts. Congratulations go to all the classes for their spirited efforts and to the Flashes for winning the Homecoming game with a score of 20-0 against East Islip.

Festive Storefront Windows Treating Downtown Sayville to fanciful, colorful, and frightful Halloween illustrations, Sayville High School and Middle School Art students brought their paints, sponges, and brushes and shared their artistic compositions on select storefront windows. The annual Halloween Window Painting, held on a brisk but sunny

October 17th this year, has been a tradition for generations. Longer than anyone seems to remember, the partnership between the Kiwanis Club (with their donations of painting supplies) and the Sayville Art department (who matched the students’ artworks with participating merchants) have collaborated to mingle mystery and magic

with imagination. And just in time for Sayville’s Fall Festival and the Sayville Homecoming parade, the entire Sayville community strolling in or driving through downtown could enjoy the images of ghouls, goblins, and ghosts, designed by this year’s fresh talent of art students.

The College Board recently recognized 126 Sachem High School students as Advanced Placement Scholars for their extraordinary performance on Advanced Placement Program exams. The College Board’s

Advanced Placement Program offers academically excelling students an opportunity to enroll in college-level courses while still in high school, to earn college credit. The College Board recognizes varying levels

of achievement based on students’ performance on the course exams. At Sachem High School East, 25 students were recognized as AP Scholars, receiving a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

Attaining an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams, 14 students from High School East were named AP Scholars with Honor. Twenty-three students

from High School East were recognized as AP Scholars with Distinction for achieving an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Earning the highest

honor presented to an AP Scholar was Vincent Zhang. He was named a National AP Scholar for receiving an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

The Connetquot Central School District is proud to introduce the three Connetquot High School student representatives who will be attending the district’s board of education meetings scheduled for the 2018-19 school year. While attending the district’s bi-monthly

board meetings, students Sabah Bari, Nicholas Keddy (alternate) and Adam Moussa will join the elected board of education officials and district administrators as nonvoting members to share their insight about various happenings taking place at both Connetquot High School and throughout the

district. All three students currently hold various titles in the school’s Student Government Club, and partake in a number of other extracurricular clubs and activities currently offered at Connetquot High School.

Gary Jensen has been a Sayville Physical Education teacher for twenty-one years, has organized and coached the triathlons at the Middle School from 2001 to 2008, and in 2013 launched the Sayville Elementary duathlons which will be holding its sixth annual event on November 17, 2018. He has also competed in thirteen previous IRONMANs. And this past July, three days after completing the IRONMAN Lake Placid, Gary was surprised with a slot to race in the World Championships. “Gary is competing,” his wife, Vanessa, had explained, “as a Kona Legacy Athlete.” For a legacy competitor, IRONMAN is more than a race requiring the best times. Congratulations to Gary Jensen on completing the World Championship Ironman! Gary’s official time was 11:44.07. For Gary Jensen, racing in the IRONMAN World Championship was a dream he has had since he was a teenager and now it has come true. This Kona Legacy program at the IRONMAN World Championship took place on Saturday, October 13th in Kona Hawaii and was his fourteenth IRONMAN. To compete as an IRONMAN, an athlete must swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and then finally run 26.2 miles. Learning About Fire Safety the students visited the firehouse and equipment, experienced the smoke house simulator and watched an informative video about fire safety. Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students were visited by West Sayville firefighters Charlie, Gary, Melissa and Captain Liz for an informative assembly about the key components of fire safety. The firefighters informed the attentive students that it is imperative to try to remain calm during a fire and stay low to the ground to avoid

smoke inhalation. The firefighters also displayed a number of their gear and gadgets to the students, including a flat head axe, halligan bar and thermal imaging camera. During both assemblies, students were encouraged to talk to their parents about developing an emergency escape plan and to have smoke detectors on each floor of the house. The students were reminded to call 911 during an emergency and to make that call from a neighboring house in the event of a fire.
