On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. The Connetquot Central School District is thrilled to announce that Connetquot High School students Samantha Lankowicz and Edward Sollazzo have been named 2019-2020 Suffolk Zone Physical Education Award winners by the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. These annual awards are presented to one male and one female student from each school district based on their effort, leadership, athleticism and outstanding character. Connetquot High School physical education teachers nominated these

deserving students, while Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Peter Melore made the final selection. Samantha currently ranks 28th in this year’s graduating class. She is tennis team captain, Thunder Tennis Camp coach, and is a member of the Jazz and Wind ensembles, Marching Band, Interact Club, Camp Invention, Girl Scouts and serves as the Leadership Intern. She is considering furthering her education at either Stony Brook University, the University of Maryland, Penn State or Indiana University, where she will study astronomy

and atmospheric science. Edward currently stands at 37th in this year’s graduating class, and participates in boys volleyball and tennis. Additionally, he contributes his time toward the Boy Scouts of America, Math League, AntiBias Club, Math Honor Society and Symphony Orchestra. He is an Eagle Scout, volleyball team captain, and is NY State Senate Youth Leadership Award recipient. Edward is considering attending either SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Binghamton or Lafayette College, where he will major in biomedical engineering.

There has been a significant decline in regular blood donors, and the region’s supply has reached critically low levels. In order to maintain a safe blood supply, a seven-day inventory of all blood types must be continually replenished. Right now,

reserves are below that minimum. October has always been the month to recover, to take a breath and know our blood supply will rebound after the tough summer months. Unfortunately, this year, that is not the case. Our region’s blood supply has never been lower. This critical blood shortage stems from decline in donor base and increased demand for

blood. We’re hoping that you will share this urgent message to encourage folks to come out to donate. That little extra action can make the difference in the lives of the patients we fight for together. During the Oct. 23 meeting of the Sachem Central School District Board of Education, the nine esteemed members of the board were recognized for their extraordinary efforts as representatives for Sachem students, staff and community members. Numerous district organizations, including the Sachem Administrators Association, Sachem Classroom Teachers

Association, Sachem Clerical Association, Sachem Nurses Association, Sachem Supervisors Association, and the Sachem custodial, maintenance, facilities and security unions all presented the board with tokens of appreciation or made donations in their name for their continuous outstanding contributions to the Sachem Central School District and

community. Among others, a donation was made to the DezyStrong Foundation, a foundation established by Matthew DiStefano, a Sachem High School North teacher currently battling cancer. The organization’s mission is to individuals with cancer access to experiences that directly instill mental wellbeing.

MARCHING BAND SHINES - On Oct. 14, the Connetquot High School Marching Band participated in the annual Columbus Day Parade held in Manhattan, once again proving to the thousands of spectators that they are a group of highly talented musicians. According to Connetquot High School Marching Band Director Gregory Johnson, the band has continuously finished in the top five position of the 20 total bands that compete since 2006. In addition to their participation in the Columbus Day Parade, the band also stunned audiences at the Newsday Marching Band Festival held at the Mitchel Field Athletic Complex in Uniondale on Oct. 17. “We are extremely proud of all of the hard work our band students put in every year,” said Mr. Johnson.
