The American Red Cross has awarded a $500,000 grant to FEGS Health and Human Services to support mental health and education services for children affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The funding will be used to help an estimated 150 children in Nassau and Suffolk counties who lost part of their academic school year due to stormrelated challenges, such as housing displacement and/or trauma caused by the storm. “FEGS is enormously appreciative of the support of the American Red Cross,” said Gail A. Magaliff, CEO of FEGS. “Children who are still struggling across Long Island will now receive academic tutoring and trauma counseling from FEGS and its partners. These funds will help us address the long-

term impact of Sandy on children which can potentially be even more damaging than the physical effects.” During and after times of disaster, the Red Cross knows that emotional support is a major element in recovery. The widespread devastation of property by Sandy left immediate and lasting emotional needs for adults and children affected by the storm. John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said: “Children were affected by Superstorm Sandy in ways that people often overlook, and this grant will help support the youth of Long Island in their recovery.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received $308

million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of September 30, the Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey a year after the storm. The Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous communitybased organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Community Development Corporation of Long Island, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island,

They must assume I can intelligently speak on things of a journalistic nature, having been employed in this area for the better part of the last nine years. And so, in the interest of evolving to meet these expectations, I have tentatively taken on these speaking engagements, preparing for each in my own unique way – and hoping, fingers crossed, that I can make an adequate impression. So far, so good. Practice does – eventually – make perfect. I will never possess the natural gift that others do; however, I no longer cringe at the prospect of an audience either. I suppose it’s fortunate that the majority of my job can be conducted via the written word.

First it was small groups of college Journalism students at my alma mater, then it progressed to high school newspaper staffs at an awards ceremony… and now add an elementary school newspaper club to my public speaking repertoire. Who would have thought? There was a time when the mere mention of the dreaded words, “oral presentation,” would strike a chord of fear deep within. As soon as the syllabus for the year was handed out back in high school and college, the anxiety began. What would I say? Would I use note cards and attempt to ad lib? Should I write out each word and read from it, never daring to glance up or make

eye contact with my audience? What if I just “winged” it, as they say, and worked it all out on the spot? Well, with rare exception, I can pretty much assure you that two of the three options NEVER happened. Rather, I was a big fan of: write it out, rehearse it to the point of practically memorizing every line anyway, but don’t dare stray from the script – after all, you might mess it up, miss a word, lose your place, whatever… and we couldn’t have that! What captivating presentations they must have been. Fast forward to the present day when, by virtue of my career, I have been afforded several opportunities to speak to those up-and-coming students in the field, ranging from the age of 8 to … whatever age it is college

During the Olympics, have you ever wondered what that funny sport with the eight identical giants in spandex rowing a boat in sync was? Crew, or rowing, is an elitist sport that is gaining popularity due to both its difficulty and its beauty. Around since 1430 BC, Crew is one of the world’s oldest sports. Originating as a punishment for prisoners and as the alternative to a sail, rowers were forced to row for hours on end. Today, Crew is no longer revered for the practicality of transportation, but for the intricacy of technique and the adrenaline of competition. The sport of rowing consists of a crew of oarsmen and, in some cases, a coxswain. The rowers, who are arranged in boats dubbed Shells, can either be solo or in groups

of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. This past weekend, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and ultimately win the race. He is truly the core of a firstclass boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook

technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than six minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless. This weekend, we are competing at the New York State Championships in Lake Saratoga, representing Long Island for St. John the Baptist DHS.

Spirits were high despite overcast skies among 650 walkers from 63 teams who turned out on Sunday, October 6th, to raise more than $68,000 in Stony Brook Medicine’s second annual Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis 5K Walk on the Stony Brook University campus. The walk, which raises funds for medical research as well as awareness in the community of the devastating effects of digestive diseases, is a joint effort of Stony Brook Medicine and the Long Island chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). In addition to the participants, more than 100 volunteers came out to help. The day began with prewalk festivities, including music and activities for kids, followed by the 2.3mile walk, which was

were offered along with new recipes, and all were delicious! In addition, for the price of the $10 admission, attendees not only enjoyed a soup/salad dinner, but were able to select a one-of-a-kind handmade ceramic bowl created by Sayville High School Art students and teachers. High School art teacher John Verschure again organized and ran the event with the tremendous help of student volunteers and the support of colleagues (see lists

below). The successful art-department sponsored event, under the direction of John Verschure, had the assistance of Art Department Chairperson Debbie Urso, Evan Hammer, and the support of art teachers Jennifer Berotti, Robin Laxton, and Jeannette Ainslie. Empty Bowls, which is also held in conjunction with the Sayville School Employees Charitable Foundation,* raised an unprecedented total $1,400 for the Greater Sayville Food Pantry.

Employees from Kohl’s Associates In Action program recently partnered with Keep Islip Clean for a volunteer project at Islip Beach. Kohl’s Associates regularly volunteer with local organizations and they chose to work through KIC for a fall beautification of the beach entranceway, which caps off the extensive Town of Islip renovation in the wake of Superstorm Sandy. Joining Kohl’s

Associates, who weeded, spread compost and planted bushes and annuals, were members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints based in Bay Shore and volunteers from the community. The volunteer team was led by KIC Commissioner Kay Erwood, with help from Debora Knutsen. Their extensive gardening knowledge was key to this successful project. Lisa Sotelo led the Kohl’s team and Elder Wilkinson

captained his church group. The Town of Islip supported the endeavor by providing all plants. “This public-private partnership between corporate employees, church members and KIC volunteers shows how much is accomplished when different members of a community work together for the good of all,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran.

The American Red Cross has awarded $2.35 million in grants to support long-term recovery services for people affected by Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. The Community Development Corporation of Long Island, LLC, a nonprofit subsidiary of Community Development Corporation of Long Island (CDCLI), will receive a $2 million grant. CDCLI will use the funding to support mold remediation for homes flooded by Superstorm Sandy. The organization expects to provide services to 325 households beginning this month and continuing for the next 12 months. “We are grateful to the American Red Cross for their generous commitment, which will enable CDCLI to expand its mold remediation services to assist residents across Long Island who were impacted by Superstorm Sandy,” said Marianne Garvin, President/CEO of Community Development Corporation of Long Island. “Since the storm hit one year ago, many homeowners have experienced the impact of mold due to flooding. Many people do not have the resources to remedy the mold problems on their own. This grant from the Red Cross, supplementing the funding received from the Robin Hood Foundation, will allow us to extend our services to all Sandy-impacted communities on Long Island, and help homeowners obtain professional evaluation and remediation of visible mold from their home. We are proud to be a partner with the Red Cross in this effort to help Long Islanders rebuild their homes

and lives post-Sandy.” The United Way of Long Island will receive a $350,000 grant. The United Way will use the funding to award sub-grants to community organizations in the areas of individual casework, housing assistance, interagency coordination and social service provider support. “Almost one year after Superstorm Sandy upended lives throughout our region, we are proud to build upon our long standing relationship with the Red Cross,” said Theresa Regnante, president & CEO, United Way of Long Island. “The grant from the Red Cross will help Long Islanders move forward. Through a request for proposal (RFP) process we will award sub-grants to community partners. We couldn’t do the work we do without the support of the Red Cross. We are certain that this grant will go far and wide in helping families with urgent needs to put the pieces back together again.” John Miller, CEO, American Red Cross on Long Island, said he was proud of the collaborative efforts of the CDC and United Way in helping Sandy survivors. “The Red Cross is committed to helping all Sandy survivors recover and rebuild, and joining forces with local non-profit community entities like CDC and United Way will increase our ability to help people who need it most.” Superstorm Sandy is the largest U.S. operation by the Red Cross in more than five years, and thanks to the public’s generous support, the Red Cross has received

$308 million in donations for Sandy emergency relief and recovery efforts. As of September 30, the Red Cross has spent or committed $280 million – more than 90 percent of the donated funds. Donations to the American Red Cross after Superstorm Sandy have led to clear signs of progress and hope through New York and New Jersey nearly one year after the storm. As of now, the Red Cross has also partnered with and funded numerous community-based organizations to support the recovery of individuals and families affected by Sandy. These partners include Brooklyn Community Foundation, City Harvest, Feeding America, Food Bank For New York City, Friends of Rockaway, Health and Welfare Council of Long Island, Island Harvest, Jewish Community Council of Rockaway Peninsula, Local Initiatives Support Corporation, National Baptist Convention USA, National Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters, New York Disaster Interfaith Services, Operation Hope, Points of Light Foundation, Salvation Army, Save the Children, Staten Island Alliance, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, The Staten Island Foundation, United Way of Long Island and Visiting Nurse Service of New York on Sandy recovery efforts in the areas of housing assistance, case management, mental health services, volunteer coordination, and food security. Additional community grants will be announced in the weeks ahead.

Dual Goals Okay, so maybe the windshield had a thin film of ice, but the frigid October morning was no deterrent for the 255 children (out of 262 who signed up) for Sayville’s 1st Annual Elementary School Duathlon. The gathering of Second, Third, Fourth and Fifthgrade students and their families was impressive at the 7 a.m. sign-in on Saturday morning. They came with bikes of all shapes and sizes. Some came wearing animal hats and thermal outerwear. They brought their colorful helmets, several helmets even sported spikes, but all came enthused and ready to run-bike-run - with two simple goals - to finish their first-ever Duathlon and to have fun doing it! As the name implies, the Duathlon involves two activities: running and biking; (a triathlon involves three: running, swimming, and biking). Although these are often timed events, the Sayville Elementary School Duathlon organizers emphasized that: “This event is not a race, and all students should be proud for their participation, no matter how long it takes to complete the course. We hope you can join the fun this Saturday! “ It was a rain-or-shine event, however, that day the sun helped warm up the morning in time for the first activity: the 8 a.m. Fun-Run for students in the lower grades and their families. This spritely group enjoyed following the

purple-painted line around the entire Lincoln Avenue field , a distance of ½ mile, to cross the official finish line accompanied by supportive family members. The “Run – Bike –Run” began punctually at 8:15 a.m. with the first wave of participants, Fifth-grade boys, who assembled at the starting line and sprang into action on the “go” signal. Fifth-grade girls followed one minute

the second part: a 2.5-mile ride on a designated route in the Lincoln Avenue vicinity. Once the bikers returned to the Lincoln Avenue School, they corralled their bikes in the parking lot, and took the final 1/2–mile run around the field both to cross the official finish line and to achieve their personal best. Flushed with exertion, these young athletes were greeted with hollers, cheers, and hugs as each accomplished what they had originally intended - to finish the firstever Sayville Duathlon. If you asked them about it just a little later, they did have fun doing it. “The girls and the gym were a sea of pink!” said Sayville Volleyball Coach Deb Urso about this year’s DIG PINK Fundraiser event. “Every player played her part in digging for a cure!” With great determination both on and off the court, the Sayville Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball teams participated in the national effort for Breast Cancer Awareness, organized by The Side-Out Foundation and Suffolk County Girls Volleyball. The Girls Volleyball has been bringing awareness and a sense of purpose in fighting Breast Cancer since 2008. Coach Urso expressed great enthusiasm for different aspects of the fundraiser; from the traditional collaboration

of running a DIG PINK, to scheduling matches during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but specifically for the growth each succeeding year of this High School Volleyball program throughout Suffolk County. After Ninth grader Emily Llewellyn opened with a powerful rendition of the national anthem, it was time to play. “The game was such a great community event. All our parents and fans were so supportive.
