o commemorate Fire Safety Month, Blue Point Elementary School students participated in safety workshops at the Blue Point Fire Department. During the events, the students met with volunteer firefighters to discuss the importance of smoke alarms and the need to practice fire drills at home. They also took turns navigating through and exiting a simulated smoke-filled room, exploring the outside of a truck and using a firefighter’s water hose.

Calming the Chaos By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take
that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan
is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

Mr. Scher has taught guitar at the Rock Underground in Commack, saxophone at the Knox School in St. James and general music at Gil Breines Music in Deer Park. Independently, Mr. Scher has taught students from a wide range of abilities and ages, mentoring and preparing them for seasonal recitals, ensembles and performances with the New York State School Music Association. At LIHSA, he will also direct the classical instrumental ensemble, drawing from his background as Music Director for the Sagamore Children’s Psychiatric Center and Classical Guitar Director for the TriCommunity Youth Agency in Huntington.
Mr. Scher holds a bachelor of music degree from Five Towns College and a master of arts degree from Stony Brook University. He also holds New York State certification in music instruction for grades K-12. “Chris has tremendous potential for success,” said LIHSA Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “His

The newest addition to the faculty of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) is an accomplished musical talent. Christopher Scher has a masterful understanding of multiple instruments and has been sharing that gift by teaching others to play for nearly 10 years. He joined LIHSA as a music instructor this fall. The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts has been offering intensive training in the visual and performing arts for more than 40 years. Students from both Nassau and Suffolk counties are eligible to attend. As part of the school’s comprehensive education, Woodhull Elementary School classes are once again engaged in a Mindful Education Program lessons this year. The class begins with students standing up and stretching, in order to focus on connecting their breath and their body. Students learn new breathing
techniques every week and are taught to close their eyes bringing their attention inward, fighting off all distractions, simply becoming aware of how they feel, using the breath as an anchor to remain calm and present. On top of participating in roleplays, which encourages mindful behavior and compassionate actions, the
students engage in many group shares. Mindfulness is increasingly recognized as an essential educational tool. Mindful children are better able to focus and concentrate, experience decreased stress and anxiety, and are more empathetic and understanding of others.
Fire Smart To commemorate Fire Safety Month, Blue Point Elementary School students participated in safety workshops at the Blue Point Fire Department. During the events,
the students met with volunteer firefighters to discuss the importance of smoke alarms, the need to practice fire drills at home and reasons why they should identify a family meeting place.

Mariculture Program educating students about aquaculture techniques and how to raise seed clams and oysters for planting at public restoration sites. As part of the Shellfish Mariculture Program, the Town provides shellfish rafts, mooring supplies to anchor the rafts and shellfish to stock the rafts.

This initiative is part of the John Pearl Elementary School’s science, technology, engineering and math program to interest students in the sciences.

Bayport-Blue Point High School is among five Long Island schools collaborating on a first-ofits-kind Digital Generation elective course this year. The unique interdistrict learning program highlights the growing importance of digital media as it relates to both personal branding and business. The curriculum for the course is aligned to the Digital Generation undergraduate course at Stony Brook University. Throughout the course, students will complete traditional coursework, but will also work with students in other districts to complete projects. Through the use of Google collaborative tools like Hangouts, Gmail and Drive, they will be able to work on documents and presentations together remotely while experiencing what it is like to work in the 21st-century
business environment. The content of the course, which draws from business, technology, social media, digital marketing and more, is highly relevant to today’s technological society. Moreover, students can bring the skills taught in the course with them to college and their professional careers. During a recent kickoff event, which involved program partners Stony Brook University, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Google and Driven Local, the students from all five schools met for the first time. Stephen Fang, regional manager for Google in Education at Google, opened with an address on the importance of collaborative tools in education and how using these tools and developing key skills will benefit students in their careers. Digital marketing experts from Melville-based Driven Local shared real-
life applications of digital marketing and spoke about the importance of building a personal brand online. Stakeholders from all participating school districts, which include Comsewogue, BBP, Westhampton Beach, Northport and Half Hollow Hills, have worked collaboratively to design the course’s common curriculum over the past year. These schools districts, along with Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Department of Technology and Society at Stony Brook University, created the Long Island eLearning Project over a year ago with the hope of developing something that was innovative in design and focused on the 21stcentury student. Students who successfully complete the course are eligible to earn college credit.
World of Learning Woodhull Elementary School students are learning about the world around them in a handson way through their participation in the building’s environmental education program. The school’s prekindergarten/kindergarten class recently studied animal and human responses to seasonal changes in weather. They discussed the different
forms of weather, the four seasons and the types of clothing humans wear during each. Additionally, they learned about different weather instruments and had the chance to make a windsock and rain gauge on what was a very rainy day. Throughout the study, the class also learned about characteristics and adaptations of local animals such as turtles, foxes and rabbits.
The thirdand fourth-grade students learned about genetics and inherited traits by examining spider plants that were seeded from different sources, and identifying and recording differences in their traits. Students also learned about inherited traits in animals and will further this study by raising trout in a classroom aquarium later in the year.
Outdoor Learning recorded observations in their nature journals and visited interactive learning stations in the class room, each of which provided experiences with one of the five sense. Additionally, as part of their project, the students acquired a new
baby box turtle as a class pet. The class will continue to monitor the animal’s growth throughout the year as part of their ongoing study.

Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School recently hosted an induction ceremony for 38 Oakdale-Bohemia students to become new members of the “Tri-M Honor Society,” an international music honor society for junior high and high school students. Tri-M Advisor Melissa
Johnson and Connetquot Central School District Assistant Superintendent Mr. Dean Mittleman welcomed family and friends to the school’s 5th annual Music Honor Society Induction ceremony and explained the significance of membership, citing how Tri-M students frequently go on to become National

Digital Rules Shannon. Leading up to creating the digital piece, the students brainstormed traits that make for a good student then used the traits to develop rules. Each student illustrated David as a cartoon
character and chose rules for him to follow. The class then used an iPad to film the commercial and edited the footage as a class using iMovie. Parents viewed the finished product on open school night.
Moving It Woodhull Elementary School students and staff participating in a program called “Move It! for Military Kids” during the week of October 19th. The idea was created by the Military Child Education Coalition to bring about awareness of the challenges these children face in their
daily lives with moving, transition, and family separation. School Nurse Janet LaViolette coordinated the weeklong initiative at Woodhull, which included a different activity for each day of the week. These included a hula hoop contest, a “mystery hike” and yoga with

Parents, teachers and community members donated plants and helped paint baseball murals to honor Ryan’s favorite sport. Slocum Elementary School teacher, applied for a grant of $500 from Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children to restore the garden. The Edith L. Slocum PTA decided to support her efforts with an additional $1,000 and reached out to the community for any donations to help revive the garden. The Boy Scouts

What better weather for painting windows than moderate temperatures and bright sunshine? It was just such a day for the Sayville High School and Middle School art students who made their annual visit downtown to paint the storefront windows with Halloween themes. Assorted images of ghouls, goblins, and
ghosts, designed by the students and approved by the Art Department’s judges, were meticulously matched to those Sayville merchants who agreed to showcase the students’ artworks. Each year, the success of this venture is due to the long-standing partnership between the Kiwanis Club members, who
have generously donated painting supplies, and the Sayville Art Department. Thanks to such unwavering support, generations of Sayville art students have been expressing themselves artistically for a long time, and again this year, in time for our Downtown Sayville’s Fall Festival.

Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as
meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and inhome support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.
