ylvan Avenue Elementary School students in Christina Law and Katherine Carpenter’s firstgrade classes in Bayport-Blue Point School District recently decorated pumpkins based on some of their favorite storybook characters. After being asked to write a book report based on the story of their choosing, the students then used their creativity and artistic skills to paint, color and dress a pumpkin to resemble the main character from their book.

This presidential campaign is like no other. One candidate is a successful businessman who beat all the odds, plus 16 other Republicans, and became the Republican nominee for President. The other candidate is a lawyer and a lifetime politician, who beat Bernie Sanders and became the first woman Democratic nominee. No matter who you support, nobody condones distasteful words spoken or irresponsible and potentially criminal actions taken by either candidate - and I think you know what and who I am talking about in each instance! Putting all this aside, you have a simple choice to make: Trump - who has earned money, power and fame and wants to help our country restabilize and prosper
once again. He wants to cut government waste, repeal and replace the affordable healthcare act, rebuild and properly care for our military, and secure our borders for everyone’s safety. Clinton - who also has money, power and fame, offers us four more years of what we now have; continuing the affordable healthcare act, big government, big government spending and open borders for a global society. So...to anyone who is still undecided, I ask you - How? The two choices you have could not be more different! Don’t allow the onslaught of the mainstream media to confuse you. Trust your GUT, and go out on November 8th and Vote It!

Science Explorations Woodhull Elementary School students in the Fire Island School District learned more about the world around them during a recent environmental education program focused on living things. After catching various critters in the Great South Bay, the
pre-K and kindergarten students looked at fiddler crabs, snails, and different bones. Additionally, these students worked with the second-graders to observe changes in states of matter and take apart mechanical objects to see “how things
work.” The items they “dissected” included a hairdryer, fan and telephone. The students later had the opportunity to see if they could invent something new from the dismantled items.
Fall Into Fitness Students at Connequot’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School are working to stay active and healthy as part of the building’s afterschool “Fall into Fitness” club, hosted by school physical education teacher Tara West. The third- through fifthgrade members have been participating in teambuilding events that are not only fun, but will also
benefit cardiovascular health as well. Their most recent activity, “Mission Impossible,” was set up in the format of a safe, fun team-building obstacle course, and had students traveling from one side of the gym to another all while communicating with their classmates. “The purpose of the club is to give students an opportunity to explore
more varied and healthier activities,” said Ms. West. “Joining ‘Fall into Fitness’ gives children a comfortable place to meet others with similar interests in sport and exercise.” Permission slips for Part 2 of “Fall into Fitness” are currently being distributed, and the dates will run from November into early January.

Students enrolled in Connetquot High Schools’ Children’s Literature course are taking an upclose look at the teaching profession this year as part of an ongoing partnership with one of the district’s elementary schools. During their kick off meeting with the firstgrade students in Jessica King’s class at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the high schools observed
Ms. King’s teaching methods, asked questions and had the chance to read to the class. They discussed such matters as classroom preparation, choice of material and gained tips for maintaining the students’ attention. “This is a great opportunity for the students to gain real life experience in a classroom,” said teacher Ross Castaldo. “These are students who
hope to be teachers one day, and working with the elementary school children provides them with an introduction into teaching. In turn, the younger students are learning how to better communicate through our pen-pal initiative, which calls for each class to draft letters throughout the experience.”
Characters Come to Life Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students in Christina Law and Katherine Carpenter’s first-grade classes in the Bayport-Blue Point School District recently decorated pumpkins based on some of their favorite story book characters.
After being asked to write a book report based on the story of their choosing, the students then used their creativity and artistic skills to paint, color and dress a pumpkin to resemble the main character from their particular book. “The effort the students
put into reading the books and bringing the characters to life through this activity greatly supported their learning process,” said Ms. Carpenter. “I was very happy with the hard work they put into their pumpkins.”

Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the members of the Islip Town Board recently honored the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition (IBCC) in recognition of their twenty years of service to the Islip community. The IBCC has helped support and comfort
hundreds of victims of breast cancer, and has provided aid to their families as well. The organization has steadily grown, and under the leadership of its current board members, the IBCC has been able to make more of an impact than ever before.
“Thanks to the efforts of this organization, hundreds of residents over the past twenty years have benefited from an improved quality of life during their struggles with cancer,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.
V-Ball Fundraiser The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team recently hosted a productive volleyball clinic to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, all the while helping young Connetquot students improve their
volleyball skills. More than 50 students spanning first through eighth-grade took part in this event, which the team hopes to run again next year. During the event, the high school players acted as coaches to the younger

In an effort to thank the dedicated residents of Holbrook who consistently participate to better our community, Legislator Lindsay and the Chamber of Commerce distributed T-Shirts to all volunteers and had planned for a post cleanup cookout. The inclement weather canned the cookout but that could not stop Holbrook residents from getting involved. “When it started to rain as much as it did, as early as it did, I was worried no one would show” said Legis. Lindsay. “However, I was heartened by the
fact that we have so many people willing to donate their valuable time in bad weather to improve our community. I cannot thank all of the volunteers enough for their dedication and efforts.” Dozens of filled garbage bags were collected by the volunteers this year which made a tremendous impact on our roadways. The tradition of hosting the Holbrook Cleanup is something Legislator Lindsay and the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce are very proud of and look forward to continuing at their next cleanup in May of 2017.
Installation Dinner
The Community Outreach Program at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) was created to highlight issues that are affecting people of all ages on Long Island. Free workshops have been planned for community members to obtain information from area professionals. Program Administrator Donna Singer said, “We want to support community members to find answers to the questions they have about societal issues such as drug abuse and Alzheimer’s.
Providing a forum for open communication is very important to ESBOCES, that’s why our Adult Education Program has taken the initiative to start the process with collaboration from Long Island professionals.” Drug Abuse on Long Island was the first in a series of workshops offered by ESBOCES. Twenty members of the community attended the three-hour workshop. Michael Spaccarotella, school social worker in the ESBOCES Incarcerated Education Program,
facilitated the presentation along with mental health professionals from South Oaks, Amityville; Seafield House, Westhampton Beach; Hope House, Port Jefferson, and Outreach House, Brentwood. The speakers discussed how heroin is used, the effects of drug abuse, telltale signs, and prevention and treatment. “The ‘war on drugs’ has been going on for 45 years and it’s an epidemic on Long Island. We want to help you find a path for yourself or a loved one,” Spaccarotella said.

sure what to expect after such same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be fit, the hardwood floor of the studio shines just as an understatement; and yet, I remembered it, and the somehow, once we all enter steps… well, they’re a work in the studio, those “grown up” progress, week by week, as my problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork in the pale yellow tutu, arms that at one point had been flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class second nature. They say that those onstage for her very first you spend years enjoying dance recital… Where ever did the years go extracurricular activities with become like a second family indeed? It’s nice to know that, of sorts over time, and the as our lives continue to move dance studio is no exception at a frenzied pace day after – especially after 20 years of day, there is still time to step essentially growing up with into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle the same core group of girls. Prescribed Burn Set

The annual event was sponsored by the Connetquot High School Student Government to ensure a fun and safe environment for the children of the community. The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, plans to conduct a controlled, prescribed burn between October 25th and November 30th, 2016 at the Sayville Unit of Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge. The Sayville Unit is the former Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) site and is located in West Sayville on Cherry Avenue next to the Dog Park and Baymen Soccer Fields. Actual dates will depend on weather conditions, favorable winds for smoke to rise and disperse, and the availability of trained wildland firefighters. The proposed burn unit is eight (8) acres and consists of warm season grasses, shrubs and woody vegetation. Approximately 33 acres were successfully burned at the Sayville Unit in March 2016. The use of prescribed fire is a vital part of the Unit’s habitat management program.
The Sayville Unit is a unique maritime grassland community, which supports the largest population of the federally endangered sandplain gerardia (Agalinis acuta) in the State of New York. The Unit also provides habitat for rare wildflowers, as well as butterflies and moths. The objectives of the prescribed burn are to enhance habitat for sandplain gerardia; increase native warm season grasses and forbs; and reduce woody vegetation and nonnative, invasive plants. Anticipated results include healthier native plant growth and better habitat for migratory birds, pollinators and other wildlife. A prescribed burn will also reduce the risks of future catastrophic wildfires by removing standing dead vegetation. Service staff have safely conducted prescribed
burns in previous years to enhance and restore wildlife habitat, and control woody vegetation and invasive plants. Fire breaks around the burn unit will prevent the fire from spreading on and off Service property. This controlled burn will likely be completed within two (2) days or less. Emergency personnel, including the local police and fire departments, will be notified prior to the prescribed burn to ensure public safety. The U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service sincerely appreciates your cooperation and support in this effort.
