Navigating The College Admissions Process

As my quest to find the perfect college is in full swing, my brother is becoming exposed to the game that we call college admissions. My brother, your typical sixteen yearold, is good in school, plays a sport and is well rounded. He is excited about the idea of selecting the school of his dreams, but lost as to where to start. Thankfully, his big brother is moderately well-versed in the art of the “College Application Process.” In my few years of college research, I have learned that, in order to be a candidate who admissions officers salivate over, a student shouldn’t necessarily be good in

several things, but excel in one thing. As decades have passed, colleges no longer look for the wellrounded student, but for the well-rounded class. This means that every college needs a class full of athletes, academic giants and leaders, among various other classifications. Gone are the days where the jack-of-all-trades student could virtually assure him/herself of acceptance anywhere. Now, the student that is well versed in one particular trade is arguably more appealing to an admissions officer. In addition to excelling in a particular field, a student can benefit from a “legacy situation.” This jargon

is another way of saying that, if a parent attended a specific college, you have a hook. My parents went to SUNY Oneonta, so if I applied there, theoretically, I would have the edge over an identical candidate with parental ties to SUNY Oswego. This link is beneficial to a college in an unexpected way. A long line of graduates with your last name opens up the door for big donations. Although I am just a senior with very basic knowledge of the college admissions process, I should be able to guide my little brother through what was arguably the most stressful segment of my life thus far.

Harvest Sunset Dinner The Fourth Annual Harvest Sunset Dinner to raise funds for pediatric multiple sclerosis (MS) research conducted through the Lourie Center for Pediatric Multiple Sclerosis at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital will take place at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook, on Thursday, November 21st from 6 to 9 p.m. Celebrity Chef Guy Reuge, of Mirabelle Restaurant at the Three Village Inn, is the Harvest Sunset honoree in recognition of his outstanding community service and his commitment and support of the Center’s mission to advance research and provide world-class medical care for children and adolescents with MS. Shari Einhorn, of News12 Long Island, will emcee the event. Also recognized at the

event are two individuals who will receive the “Woman of Distinction” award. Rina Ambrosio, of Wantagh, N.Y., the mother or a pediatric patient of the Lourie Center, will be recognized for her enthusiasm and energy in organizing fundraising events to benefit the Lourie Center. Nancy Rifkind, of East Setauket, will receive the award for her unwavering annual support of the Teen Adventure Camp. Historically viewed as an adult-onset disease and difficult to diagnose in children, MS is now understood by scientists to be a pediatric disease as well. MS affects approximately ten thousand children in the U.S. “Research to help us uncover the mysteries of MS is vital if we are to find better diagnostics for children with MS and develop targeted

treatments for the longterm management of the disease,” says Lauren Krupp, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Pediatric MS Program Director. “We are pleased that this event helps to both celebrate our advances in MS research and support our ongoing programs.” Harvest Sunset cost is $100 per person. Local Boy Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs and Venturing Crews are open for new youth to join this Fall. Scouting, with more than 100 years of tradition and adventure, has been a part of Suffolk County community life since 1910 when the first Boy Scout Troop registered in Huntington, New York. That tradition continues today with Scouting units in every town in Suffolk County. Each year thousands of youth participate in all levels of Scouting from Cub Scouts, which serves boys in grades 1 through 5; Boy Scouts, which serves young men from the ages of 11 through 17, and Venturing, which serves both young men and women who have completed the 8th grade

on up through age 20. Scouting brings skills, adventure and knowledge to the youth who participate. Every year Scouts learn about the great outdoors firsthand by hiking and camping at our local and national parks and trails. They learn valuable life skills through Scouting’s extensive merit badge program and the new STEM/Nova program that focuses on the sciences and math (part of the new Core Curriculum that is part of our national education guidelines). Each year hundreds of young men earn the prestigious Eagle Scout rank, which is recognized by colleges, universities and businesses as a sign of great leadership skills. Many national leaders, business leaders, and even Apollo astronauts have been Scouts and have

earned the Eagle rank. Scouting is affordable and, unlike seasonal activities, your membership is good for all 12 months of the year. Yesterday, Legislator John “Bulldog” Kennedy, Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, honored “RSVP” or the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, who have been serving the needs of Suffolk County residents for over 41 years. RSVP has over 900 senior volunteers whom are committed to community service and has provided aid to those in need. On this day honoring RSVP and its senior volunteers, certain volunteers received special recognition for their efforts. Fred Louka, Christian Specht and Mike Trotta received the Spirit

New Principal Named went above and beyond,” Dr. Ihne remarked about the people who influenced her, adding “they put forth their best efforts on a daily basis.” Ihne admired how they “really took the time to get to know each and every student, and as a result, worked with each student’s strengths.” After years in the classroom and with the encouragement of key individuals, Dr. Ihne decided to make the transition from the classroom to the administrative office. “While I was working at Commack UFSD, my Principal, Marilyn Wunder, and Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Terry Horowitz, who worked there at the time, inspired me to enter the field of administration. They are extraordinary women and talented leaders who

made a difference in education.” Following this new path, Dr. Ihne became Assistant Principal for the Elementary and Middle Schools at Westhampton Beach UFSD and more recently, for the past three years, served as an Elementary Principal at Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot CSD before joining Cherry Avenue. Replacing former Principal Dr. John Stimmel (who is now Sayville’s Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction), Dr. Ihne hopes to introduce programs that will allow her to interact with her Cherry Avenue students. One of her favorites is Lunch With the Principal. “It gives me an opportunity to get to know the students on an individual basis and

build relationships with them along the way. It is important that they see me as more than a disciplinarian.” Beyond the classroom and school building, Ihne has played an important role as a member of the Patchogue Woman’s Club for several years, before becoming its 2nd Vice President. The Patchogue Woman’s Club is celebrating its 83rd year of service and raises money for charities and scholarships. Many young ladies from PatchogueMedford, Bayport-Blue Point, Sayville, and South Country school districts have been recipients of these scholarships. In addition, Dr. Ihne is an active volunteer at the St. Ursula Convent and was recently honored with the Phi Delta Kappa Friends in Education Award (June 2013). “I am thrilled to serve

as the Principal of Cherry Avenue Elementary School, “Dr. Ihne said. “This year brings new experiences for everyone. I look forward to creating strong, home-school connections, through which the Cherry Avenue Staff and I can focus on creating a positive and enriching experience for our students.” In turn, Sayville School District feels fortunate to have Dr. Lisa Ihne join our community and wishes her a wonderful first year, with many more to come! With big smiles of welcome, Dr. Lisa Ihne, Sayville’s new Cherry Avenue Elementary School Principal, greeted the wide-eyed elementary school children on their first day of school in September. The new Principal blended well with the many Cherry Avenue school staff members who customarily assured hesitant newcomers or assisted eager returnees as they walked toward the entrance. While Dr. Ihne could empathize with

those students joining the Cherry Avenue community for the first time, there was no hesitation in her ability to assume the responsibilities of principal. Rather, it was a smooth transition thanks to her professionalism. Lisa Ihne launched her career as a Fourthgrade Teacher in Commack UFSD, as Lead Sixth-Grade Teacher at Commack Middle School, and as an Elementary Summer School Principal for three years. For Ihne, “Nothing is better than working with children! Watching them grow socially and academically is very rewarding,” Her enthusiasm for teaching was fueled by positive memories of great educators in her own life. “My High School teachers at Patchogue-Medford were talented educators who

Crew 777 is a co-ed Boy Scout unit for young men and ladies between

the ages of 14-20. While focused on the outdoors, they also take part in other non-outdoor activities and community service. Trips have included: Backpacking in Colorado and New Mexico, canoeing through the interior of Alaska, kayaking, sailing and biking on South Padre Island, whitewater rafting in West Virginia, and caving.

Inspiring Creativity Rather than just learning about the curriculum their children will be studying this year, parents at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District had the chance to experience a taste of it during this year’s open house. Art teacher Carly Gayer illustrated how art classes are conducted by leading

and instructing parents in an adapted version of a first-grade art project. Parents learned about landscape, drew silhouettes and observed as Ms. Gayer demonstrated the painting process using primary colors to make a sunset/ sunrise colored sky. “This was a great interactive open house experience that enabled

parents to see firsthand what their children experience in art class,” said Ms. Gayer. “They learned about art history, the interdisciplinary links we make to science and literacy, some art vocabulary and the process. It was a memorable night for me and the families.”

(NAPSI)—To help protect you and your family from tobacco-related death and disease, researchers from Legacy®, a national public health organization dedicated to building a world where anyone can quit smoking, recommend two actions: stop smoking or never start. If you do smoke or use tobacco, speak to your doctor about quitting smoking. A survey of more than 3,146 adults in the U.S. conducted by Legacy discovered that more than one in 10 smokers have concealed their smoking status from a health care provider—nearly half of them stated it was because they are ashamed that they smoke. Another reason for not disclosing this important information to a medical professional: two-thirds surveyed who did not disclose their smoking status reported not wanting to be lectured about smoking. Fortunately, health care professionals such

as doctors, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, dentists and pharmacists can help smokers by bringing up the subject with patients. To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their

lifetime. Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidence-based treatments, such as overthe-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national tollfree quitline, (800)-QUITNOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www. BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. More than 45 million Americans currently smoke and an estimated 70 percent of them want to quit, but lack the tools to do so. Committing to quit is the crucial first step toward becoming smoke free. Photographs & Still Frames By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am what I suppose you would classify as “slightly” obsessed with photography. Everywhere I travel, whether for the first time or the fiftieth, I am constantly on the lookout for interesting angles, landscapes, candid shots… anything that happens to catch my eye. There is something about preserving the moment that has always appealed to my sense of historical appreciation – because, after all, the second a moment has passed, it is, theoretically, history. This is not to say that every one of the thousands of photos in my digital archive would necessarily qualify as “art” or even as particularly significant to anyone but me. They are just part of the vast collection of snippets from my life, of those close to me, of the places I have been, the

events I have attended – all easily accessible whenever I, or anyone else, is in the mood for a little trip down memory lane. One would think, with such an interest in the art of photography, that I might invest in a “real” camera at some point, rather than relying solely on the somewhat questionable quality of my digital smartphone, portable and convenient as it is. And while, yes, an assortment of lenses and tools would certainly improve the technical quality, there is definitely something to be said for being able to instantly capture the scene before you. With the recent influx of social media outlets such as Facebook and Instagram, there seems to be a newfound obsession with instantly sharing every photo taken, especially among those of the younger generation. While I can appreciate a good photo as much as the next person, there is

such a thing as overkill. Case in point: I recently traveled to Ireland over the summer on what was my first “real” trip – on a plane, overseas, to a land full of countless photo ops. I took what amounted (after many retakes and deletions) to about 800 photos over the course of eight days. Had I taken a cue from the masses out on Facebook, all 800 of those pictures would have been instantly uploaded the second my feet touched American soil. Instead, I managed to narrow it down to maybe a dozen of my favorites. I’m sure all my social media “friends” and “followers” thank me for that. Photography will always be something of a passion for me. And why not? Someday, all those seemingly meaningless photos will be quite significant. Better to capture those moments now.

The Boulton’s involvement with the YMCA of Long Island and the Great South Bay YMCA in Bay Shore was a large part of the rebirth of Bay Shore’s downtown community. Mr. Boulton served as Chairman of the Board of Managers for nearly ten years, and chaired the Capital Campaign that raised $6.2 million to build the YMCA. Among many other endeavors, Karen lent her expertise to help guide the Y staff through the certification process for the early childhood program. The Boulton’s donated the Regent Theater to the YMCA, which became the Boulton Center for the Performing

Arts. As founder and CEO of the Long Island Ducks, Frank chairs the team’s charitable arm, The QuackerJack Foundation, which works with more than 800 Long Island not-for-profits. They raise money for the fight against breast cancer, support Ride for Life to raise money to fight ALS, and support many other organizations. Mr. Boulton is a graduate of Villanova University, which he credits for his success and for shaping his perspective on philanthropy. A member of the President’s Leadership Council of Villanova University, his continuing support and generosity was recognized in 2012 with the presentation of the St. Thomas of Villanova Alumni Medal, the highest honor awarded to alumni. Trick Or Treat At Town Hall This Halloween, trickor-treaters ages 10 years and younger are invited to Islip Town Hall West, located at 401 Main Street, for a fun-filled evening featuring trick-or-treating, a comedy show and costume contest. This is a FREE event sponsored by the Islip Town Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, to be held

Just in time for the Fall Festival in Sayville, and upon the request of the Sayville Chamber, Sayville Middle School and High School art students appeared on Main Street to bewitch the storefront windows with magical designs. For longer than anyone seems to remember, the Sayville Kiwanis Club has been donating painting supplies to the art students to support the annual

Halloween Window Painting. After reviewing the sketches culled from many student submissions, members of the Sayville Art department determine which would be most suitable for those select Sayville merchants who have agreed to showcase student designs. This year, the dry and temperate weather couldn’t have been more perfect. The young artists and accompanying art

teachers enjoyed the sun and warmth as ordinary glass windows were transformed into exciting Halloween visions. Evidence of apparitions of ghouls, goblins, witches, and whimsy decorating Downtown Sayville in the spirit of the bewitching season is proof that the long-standing partnership between the Kiwanis Club and the Sayville Art Department is alive and kicking.

Success Story Returns Springing from a musical family in Sayville, Douglas Jones is among the Sayville Music Department’s most amazing success stories. With a remarkable career of musical accomplishments since his graduation in 2009, Douglas Jones today is increasingly active as an orchestral, chamber, and freelance musician in northern Ohio where he currently lives. By the age of 14, Douglas Jones was studying at the Juilliard School. As a full scholarship recipient, he performed regularly with the Honors Brass Quintet and the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestra. In 2010, Douglas was one of only two Americans invited to compete in the International Performers Competition for Tuba in Brno, Czech Republic. Recent highlights include concerts with

City Music Cleveland a Cleveland-based dynamic contemporary ensemble, “5-1,” as well as with “Kyodai Brass.” With the Kyodai Brass, Douglas has held fellowships at the Norfolk and Aspen music festivals, performed on Cleveland’s WCLV live broadcast and put on regular recitals throughout Northeast Ohio. Highlights of Kyodai’s upcoming season include residencies with the Detroit and Cleveland Chamber Music Societies along with recitals throughout the greater Cleveland area. As a member of the Kyodai Brass, Douglas has studied chamber music with members from the Empire Brass, American Brass Quintet, and the New York Brass Quintet. His additional chamber music studies include mentorship from Annie Fullard of the Cavani String Quartet and

Raymond Stewart of the Meridian Arts Ensemble. An avid support of public school music education, Douglas has lead dozens of outreach programs throughout the country as a member of the Kyodai Brass and as a soloist. He is in demand as an educator through private instruction and public master classes. Douglas has studied tuba in New York with Steve Foreman, Andrew Bove, and Maruc Rojas. Additional studies include, Warren Deck, Phil Sinder, and Charles Villarubia. Currently, Douglas is a student of Yasuhito Sugiyama, principal tuba of the Cleveland Orchestra. Douglas studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with the late Ronald Bishop, retired principal tuba of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Coming off a great season for Sayville Girls Varsity Tennis, Coach Neil Bernstein admired “the chemistry of the team, especially as the members supported each other in practice and at matches.” That support paid off. On Monday, October 16th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended the Albert Tinnie Senior Club’s Annual Installation Luncheon at the Mediterranean Manor in Patchogue. “It is always a pleasure to meet with the Albert Tinnie Senior Citizens Club. I enjoy joining my friends at the club for their installation luncheons to thank the outgoing

officers for their years of service to the club and congratulate the incoming club officers,” said Councilwoman Kepert. At the event, the Councilwoman presented Certificates of Appreciation to outgoing Secretary Mary Johnson, outgoing Treasurer Maxine Jackson, and outgoing Vice President Vivian Felton. The Sheriff’s safety program includes lessons about the importance of wearing a helmet, where to ride on the road, learning hand signals and how to safely cross an intersection. The obstacle course was set up at the Idle Hour Elementary School

In collaboration with the Lions Club International Foundation, the Long Island Lions Quest Initiative recently announced the awarding of a Core 4 grant of $133,000 to help Long Island schools train teachers and provide materials for the K-12 Lions Quest program, a proactive initiative to create safe, supportive and successful schools on Long Island. Through this grant, proactive schools in Nassau and Suffolk counties are set to create safer and more supportive schools through Lions Quest, which meets the new Dignity for All Students Act curriculum requirement. Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci hosted an information meeting at Farmingdale State College on October 9th during which legislators and school officials learned about the program. Lions Quest, an evidence-based program, focuses on social and emotional skill building, bullying, substance abuse and dropout prevention, and service learning. The Lions Quest program is designed to create a positive and safe school climate for students and teachers, and unite the home, school and community. Highly effective programs like Lions Quest have been proven to decrease problem behaviors while increasing academic achievement, pro-social behaviors and connectedness to family and school. The program includes a carefully sequenced elementary, middle school and high school curriculum and helpful guidelines for parent meetings, service learning strategies and a school climate committee. The grant will be used to subsidize

the cost of training Long Island teachers and administrators in the implementation of this program, which helps reduce the cost to school districts and taxpayers. The implementation of Lions Quest across Nassau and Suffolk counties is in collaboration with the Lions clubs of both counties, and Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), the official charitable organization of Lions Clubs International. Western Suffolk BOCES will be providing the one-day professional development workshops to train educators. Districts that participated in training last spring and who have already received grant awards are Commack, Freeport and Merrick Schools. Other districts in the process of submitting grant proposals include Eastport-South Manor, Huntington, Long Beach, West Babylon and Woodward Children’s Center. Several other districts attended information sessions and are considering the program. “As a career law enforcement officer, I’ve seen the consequences of drug use and the need for quality prevention education. But I’ve also seen firsthand the impact that high-quality programs like Lions Quest have on our communities,” said Al Brandel, Past International President of Lions Clubs International and a member of the West Hempstead Lions Club. “It is vital that schools, families and communities come together and insist on bringing social and emotional education to our schools, and I’m proud to join with my fellow Lions members to expand this initiative on Long

This legislation requires all New York schools to provide learning environments free of discrimination, bullying and harassment. A key component of the law is providing Kindergarten through twelfth grade instruction in civility, citizenship and character education. “Teachers who implement the program discover that strong bonds and positive relationships develop in their classrooms, while students develop important skills such as working collaboratively, making informed decisions, solving problems, and achieving their goals,” explains Joan Fretz, co-founder of the LI Social Emotional Literacy Forum. “Students then choose to contribute positively and that maximizes instructional time. Lions Quest lessons include highly effective teaching strategies and are well-correlated with the Common Core Learning Standards, teacher evaluation competencies, d i f f e r e n t i a t e d instruction, and the Dignity Act curriculum requirements.” As part of the longterm vision for the initiative, LCIF will prepare two affiliate trainers for Nassau and Suffolk counties to help the Lions districts meet their future training needs and create sustainability for the program. Data collection and evaluation will be conducted over the span of the next two years to determine the effectiveness of Lions Quest with a specific focus on the goals of the Dignity for All Students Act. Lions Quest has trained more than 500,000 educators and positively impacted more than 12 million students in 80 countries, making it one of the most widely-used social and emotional learning programs in the world.

Distinguished Citizens The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council is proud to announce the recipients of the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Award. The Distinguished Citizens Award recognizes noteworthy and extraordinary leadership of citizens in our communities. Since 1965, the Suffolk County

Council has honored a list of truly outstanding Long Islanders, such as Ward Melville, Robert Moses, H. Lee Dennison, and Dr. Shirley Strumm Kenny. This year’s honorees are Cathleen Hansen (East Setauket), David Hunt (Fort Salonga) and Floyd Sarisohn (Commack). All three know the value of Scouting first hand.

Two of Cathleen’s sons have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Floyd Sarisohn, Senior Partner in the law firms of both Sarisohn Law Partners LLP and Sarisohn, Carner LeBow and DeVita, is an Eagle Scout and has been a member of the Order of the Arrow since 1942. David Hunt, President of Hunt Corporate Services,

Inc., is an Eagle Scout and is currently an Eagle Scout Counselor. For over a century the Boy Scouts of America has been the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values based leadership training. This “youth” program has long-lasting benefits, to members once they

become adults and to their communities. Quality Scouting programs require resources and well trained volunteers. The council provides those resources and trainings. The Distinguished Citizen Award Dinner is the centerpiece of the council’s fundraising efforts.

Local Businesses Honored Nine small businesses were honored last week for their resilience and determination in a difficult economy. The Islip Town Small Business Awards ceremony brought together leaders from government and industry at the annual event and recognized small biz owners for their contributions to our economy and our community. Each of the recipients has proven their ability to weather economic difficulties while maintaining their level of community outreach. The awards were presented to businesses across a wide variety of industries, but all meet the federal definition of a small business – having less than 500 employees. “The success of a local business isn’t always measured by their profit margin, but rather by what they are able to give back to the community over an extended period of time,” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt. “Each of these businesses, whether they have four employees or four hundred, consistently demonstrates their commitment to the greater Islip community, and it is a privilege to give them a little credit for their contributions.” The recipients of the awards were first nominated by a member of the Islip Economic Development Commission and other local business and community

leaders who help foster a business-friendly atmosphere in Islip Town. Small businesses make up 99% of all New York businesses and employ nearly 4 million workers in New York State.

“As a small business owner I understand the operational and financial challenges faced by each honoree, and this award is a testament to their determination to succeed and adapt in changing circumstances,” said Councilman Anthony Senft. Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., liaison to Islip Economic Development, made special mention of
