onnetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School recently celebrated its 2015 Homecoming Weekend. The weekend’s festivities began with a Friday night pep rally, followed by a Saturday morning board gamethemed homecoming parade and culminated in the CHS T-Birds’ exciting 41-0 football win over crosstown rival Sachem East High School. 2,000 were in attendance, showing their school pride.

Finned Wit & Wisdom By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Here I come to save the day, yet again, with my witty observations on life from within the confines of my bowl. The Human, it seems, is busy getting herself ready for a wedding – one, I might add, that I was not invited to. And here I had my bowtie and top hat all picked out for the occasion. How rude. I suppose this means my dinner will be late too. What does a fish have to do to maintain a steady feeding schedule? Sometimes it’s twice a day, sometimes once… four flakes, five… sometimes only a couple when I knock the rest down to the gravel with my fins, never to be seen again. Speaking of which, these

late-night feedings have to stop. Back and forth, I swim my laps, anxiously waiting for my Human to arrive. Eventually, after days of starvation {10 hours or so} I give up hope, putting myself to bed with no supper. But wait, is that a light I see? I groggily press my nose against the glass, dimly making out the shadow of my Human, apologizing for getting home so late. I sleepily bounce from one branch of my plant to another, aimlessly chomping at imaginary flakes, before putting myself back to bed, thoroughly unsatisfied. I suppose I’m always hungry though. I have no concept of time, or quantity. As many times as I find flakes fluttering into my bowl, I will

greedily inhale them, barely pausing to chew in between. From my experience, you have to savor these feeding times, since you never know when the next one may come around. Sort of like the Mets and their quest for the World Series. I haven’t been around long, but I hear this is a pretty rare occurrence. Me, I tend to root for the Marlins. Us fish gotta stick together, after all. But, I suppose I’m a New Yorker, officially. Maybe my Human will buy me some blue and orange gravel so I can root, root, root for the home team…you know, on our trip to the pet store that I’ve been promised since August. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

THE LITTLE THINGS SUBMITTED BY: SOFIA PAPASTAVROU, AGE 16, HHH HIGH SCHOOL WEST Currently, Cancer is responsible for 20,000 deaths a day. 20,000 lives lost to this illness. First off, I want to apologize for the morbidity already displayed one sentence into this essay. If you’re looking to read about average summer vacation stories, or the day someone won their first trophy, I would advise you to stop reading. I don’t write this to receive sob stories from countless people, or even gain sympathetic condolences. I just want to put life into perspective. I want to inform you readers of the true and raw meaning of life, and what many people have forgotten over the years while in the midst of everyday life. The pursuit of happiness is defined as a fundamental right mentioned in the Declaration of Independence to freely pursue joy and live life in a way that makes you happy. I think many people

have forgotten this idea, and it saddens me to feel the need to write this, informing people on how to truly live. I lost a dear friend of mine recently. She was a family friend, but I definitely considered her family - like an aunt. She was diagnosed with cancer about a year ago, and it only took a few months for the cancer to completely demolish her body. It’s not fair how she died so suddenly and irrationally. Life works mysteriously like that. I can’t quite put into words the feelings I encountered the day she died. But that’s a whole other story. One regret I have whilst she was still alive was not laughing and smiling a little bit more when I was still in her presence. I’m a glass half full type of person. I like to see things in positive perspectives. Life is way too short to be anything but happy.

In my eyes, if you have a roof over your head and food on the table, you’re lucky. The countless complaints that our society has adapted to consider “normal” is absurd… Now, I’m not going to lie and say I’ve never complained before. Hell, I probably complain a little too much. But luckily, I have the decency to step back and view the bigger picture in terms of the pursuit of happiness and pure joy and all of that cheerful nonsense. Live a little. Don’t let the little things bring you down. Be grateful for family and love and joy and laughter and all that good stuff that doesn’t cost a penny. Happiness is a free commodity. Only God knows when your life is coming to an end, so take advantage of every day. Say your “I love you’s” and give your biggest hugs and don’t regret a thing. Life is way too short - I can’t stress this enough.

SOCCER STARS - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School T-Birds recently competed in an aggressive game against the Thunderbirds from Half Hollow Hills High School East. Coach Nick Sertz’s T-Birds scored the first goal late in the second half, however the Thunderbirds later tied then broke the tie in overtime by a score of 2-1. Connetquot High School’s boys’ soccer records so far this season is 1-1-0.

NURSING EXCELLENCE - Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center recently held its annual Outstanding Nursing Excellence Awards ceremony. Among those recognized were an array of nursing and support staff members. Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti 5th grade students recently created birthday cards for Beth Catlin, a 52 year-old autistic savant living in Pennsylvania. Beth has memorized the names, addresses and birthdates of almost

EELGRASS PRJECT - An eelgrass workshop was recently held at Bellport Village Marina. The workshop is a hands-on event where children of all ages learn the importance of eelgrass to our waterways. The group weaved shoots of eelgrass into burlap discs. Eelgrass has many ecological benefits, which include stabilizing seafloor sediments and shorelines, cleaning coastal waters and providing habitat for a diversity of flora and fauna.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) recently celebrated its 2015 Homecoming Weekend. The weekend’s festivities began with a Friday night pep rally, followed by a Saturday morning board gamethemed homecoming parade and culminating in the CHS T-Birds’ exciting 41-0 football win over crosstown rival Sachem East High School. 12th grade Homecoming King Reese Sclafani and Queen Cerra Ebbecke

were announced during the pep rally, along with the members of the Honor Court: 9th grade Lord and Lady Nick Fanderos and Erin Venth; 10th grade Duke and Duchess Kevin Ferrara and Kaitlyn Velez; and 11th grade Prince & Princess Anthony Melfi and Christina Misuraca. More than 2,000 Connetquot High School students, families, teachers, administrators and community members showed their school pride dressed in red and white, and their class pride by

supporting one of four floats during the parade: the freshman class’ “Hungry Hungry Hippo” float followed by the “Lord and Lady” car, the sophomore class’ “Chutes and Ladders” float followed by the “Duke and Duchess” car, the junior class’ “Clue” float followed by the “Prince and Princess” car and the senior class’ “Candyland” float followed by the “King and Queen” car. The senior class’s “Candyland” car won first place in the float competition, announced during the halftime show.

DRIVING TOWARD PLAYOFFS - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) Women’s Tennis team recently played against North Babylon High School for non-league competition. The ‘T-Birds’ currently enjoy a record of 7-3, and are seeking their fourth consecutive league playoff invitation. The Connetquot High School tennis program, led by Coach Ryan Cavanagh, continues to compete in Division II, one of the most challenging divisions in Suffolk County. Team captains this year are: Kayla Reidy, Christina Lonieski, Grace McGinnis and Veronica Passannate, all in the class of 2016.

Brain Challenge Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently ushered in the new school year by hosting “Hollyrock Brain Challenge,” an interactive game show in which students were challenged to

answer history questions, recognize their numbers and letters, dance, hula hoop, jump rope and test their strength in a tug-ofwar competition. Students were divided into two groups and assigned teachers as team

captains to help build teamwork and introduce students to new friends. The purpose of the event was to encourage students to get back in the habit of mentally and physically challenging themselves.

The association hosted the fundraiser to raise money for much needed repairs to their clubhouse building. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter announced Islip’s Preliminary 2016 Operating Budget, is available on the town’s website at www.islipny.gov. “Now, for the very first time in the history of Islip Town government, the residents of Islip Town will not only be given numbers, but also the very important details and explanations of the town’s operations to help them understand where their tax dollars are going,” Supervisor Carpenter added. This new format for presenting the annual Operating Budget for the Town of Islip demonstrates that Supervisor Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board are committed to responsible government and transparency. “I am pleased to share this Preliminary 2016 Operating Budget with Islip residents as well as the very important details about how their tax dollars are spent,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I am committed to ensuring Islip residents easy access to important information including what the Town

of Islip is doing to manage revenue and expenses in the most efficient way possible. I think it is important for taxpayers to understand the portion of their annual tax bill that actually goes to the town is only 4.73%, one of the lowest of all the towns in Suffolk County,” Supervisor Carpenter continued. During the past several months, Supervisor Carpenter met with all the members of the Town Board, Commissioners and department heads to engage them in the process of developing a very thorough budget report for 2016. The Town of Islip’s 2016 Operating Budget is tax cap compliant. This cap limits the increase of the total tax levy to the lesser of 2% or the rate of inflation. Limitations due to this tax cap present the challenge of maintaining services at a time when revenues are stagnant and fixed costs such as pension payments and health insurance benefits are increasing. The 2016 Budget for the Town’s three major funds reflects a very modest increase of 1.54% over the 2015 budget, which

translates to an additional $19.15 per household. The services that are provided to Islip Town residents include: Administrative, Assessment, Building and Grounds Maintenance, Vehicle Maintenance, Traffic Safety, Tax Collection, Town Clerk, Public Safety, Parks and Recreation, Water Management, Youth Services, Highway Repair and Snow Removal. These funds have a few recurring sources of revenue, including the Property Tax, various Fees for Services, the Town’s share of the Mortgage Tax proceeds and Interest Earned on the Town’s deposits. However, since the economic recession, the Mortgage Tax proceeds and interest earnings have decreased, thus putting a drastic burden on the Town of Islip taxpayers. “Our top priority is to hold the line on taxes and deliver a fiscally conservative, efficient and transparent budget to the taxpayers of our town and that is what I believe we have done with this budget,” Supervisor Carpenter remarked.

Martorana, District Court Judge. “Again, it was a pleasure to be invited to the Cohalan Children’s Center representing the membership of the CTA”, said Felicio. “The association donated over $200 in new books for the children, which will help bring a bit of sunshine to the youngsters that use the center. It’s gratifying to be in the company of so many people that are also supportive and concerned for the welfare of young children. As educators, we support and nurture every child, regardless of their background, where they come from, mental capacity, religious beliefs and/or the illnesses

they face. The Cohalan Children’s Center can count on the continued support of the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association.” For the past 10 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center. The center is open five days a week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Agnes Cento. From January to April 2015 alone, the center served 396 children, and 299 families. Last year the Children’s Center serviced over 1,200 children. Connetquot teachers continue to provide hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center over the course of the school year. The children leave the center with new books, and warm clothes after each visit.

Advocates of the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip were invited to the annual Bagels and Books breakfast on October 21st. Among the invited guests was Anthony Felico, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), who has been a “… huge supporter of the Children’s Center for years,” according to Agnes Cento, the center’s master teacher. Mrs. Sue Fox, District Court Clerk and Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee for the Children’s Center, referred to Felicio and the CTA membership as “ … long time, important, partners, in the work of the center.” Felicio was invited by Ms. Cheryl Zimmer, Supreme Court Advisory Board Co-Chair, to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC).
