Eating Healthy Day National Eating Healthy Day is Wednesday, Nov. 2 and as the American Heart Association’s new +color campaign emphasizes, it’s important to BE COLORFUL. Because as the old saying goes, “you are what you eat.” On this iconic day, and throughout the entire month of November, the association wants to remind Long
Island residents that by adding more color to meals through fruits and vegetables, people can take simple yet significant steps to a more vibrant, healthier, longer life. In an effort to improve the diet quality of 55 million Americans, the association’s +color campaign is educating consumers on fruits
and vegetables and the benefits each has to one’s health. Fruits and vegetables typically have more nutrients with fewer calories than other lesshealthy food choices. Eating a colorful variety may help you prevent heart disease, stroke and other illnesses. National Eating Healthy Day and +color provide important

This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect
of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in
other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

The Leader in Me Edward J. Bosti Elementary School faculty and staff in the Connetquot School District recently met to brainstorm ideas about how to make every student a leader. Introduced by Bosti Principal Dr. Gail Cholden in 2015, the “Leader in Me” program teaches 21stcentury leadership skills to students, creating a culture
of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. “Our participating teachers synergize on a regular basis to develop ideas on how to make every child a leader,” said Dr. Cholden. “The ‘Leader in Me’ promotes growth, self-efficacy, self-awareness, positive thinking, character, trust,
relationships, empathy, cooperation, goal setting, listening, motivation and talent.” The program, developed by Franklin Covey, is now being implemented in more than 2,000 schools worldwide. Participating schools are consistently reporting increases in all of the positive aspects the program promotes.
A Day in the Life Blue Point Elementary School students were recently invited to pay a visit to the Blue Point Fire Department for a day highlighting the life of a firefighter and the importance of fire safety. To begin their visit, students attended a safety lesson inside the firehouse.
In addition to viewing an informational video, they were told of the proper ways to extinguish a fire and reminded about the importance of making sure that smoke detectors batteries are changed every six months. Students were then led outside to attend a hands-
on interaction with various tools that firefighters use on a daily basis. They climbed inside ladder trucks, learned about firefighter tools and even had the chance to practice using a real fire hose with the assistance from firefighters.

Affecting Change Students at Ronkonkoma Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently visited by the multi-talented singer/ songwriter Jared Campbell for a presentation about making the most out of life. Dressed in blue shirts symbolizing their commitment to respecting one another, the students were enthralled with Mr. Campbell’s ability to mix
comedy and songs while stressing the overall message of keeping the Connetquot community bully-free. His original tunes such as “When I Was a Kid” and “Change the World” provided stories of hope, and students paid careful attention to the inspiring lyrics as Mr. Campbell performed. Additionally, members of the school’s Dignity or All Students Act Committee, including guidance
counselor Christine Valente and Principal Charles Morea, were in attendance to spread the message that all humans should be treated with dignity and respect. The DASA law was mandated by New York State on July 1st, 2012 and protects students from harassment, discrimination and bullying by other students or school employees. Bright sunshine matched the spirit and generosity of golf enthusiasts and sponsors, enabling the Friends of Mercy Medical Center to raise $125,000 at their 35th annual Golf Classic. The September 15th event included a morning and afternoon shotgun, with 250 golfers coming together at the Garden City Country Club and Hempstead Golf and Country Club to support the Rockville Centre hospital. Due to the initial successful response, the first course was completely reserved within just nine days, and so the second course was added. Many thanks to all who participated! The post-outing dinner honored William Armstrong, CPA, senior vice president of finance for Catholic Health Services, and the presenting sponsors were Sentosa Care LLC and Medtronic. Golfers and dinner guests had great raffle prizes to choose from: drivers, putters, sports tickets, luggage and more. The monies raised will go towards the planned expansion and renovation of Mercy Medical Center’s Patio Grill. Located on the hospital’s main floor, renovation plans include the doubling of dining space, new furnishings and décor and has been designed to reflect a true café. The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrated its final days of the 2016 season with its second annual Pirates and Princesses Treasure Hunt on Monday, October 10th. Hundreds of children of all ages donned their best ball gowns and swashbuckling attire to participate in an expedition around the zoo. Prizes were awarded to all participants, who also had a chance to take pictures with a real-life pirate and princess. “The Pirates and
Princesses Treasure Hunt was the perfect way to end our 2016 season,” says Melinda Novak, Co-Owner/ Vice President, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “The weather was perfect, despite the rainy weekend, and all of the families seemed to have a lot of fun. guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year was the Camel Encounter, where guests hand-fed the camels and learned fun facts from the staff. Healing Heart 5K The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at
10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates

PUZZLE ANSWERS: Members of the public and the Long Island Health Collaborative (LIHC) walked the Sunken Meadow State Park boardwalk on Thursday, October 6th to raise awareness about the importance of physical activity in maintaining physical and mental health. The walk coincided with Mental Health Awareness
Week. With the regional theme of being able to “Shine a Light” on mental health/substance abuse treatment and prevention, the LIHC called the event the Light the Path Walk. There is compelling research that physical activity improves mood and it has been shown to decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety.
“We know that one in every five individuals will experience a mental health issue during their lifetimes,” said Janine Logan, Director of the Long Island Health Collaborative. “The simple act of walking is one way to manage stress, while losing weight and getting in shape at the same time.”
