opportunity for individuals who are fighting cancer to have access to support that affects a positive mental well-being.

While Dezy passed away in January 2020, his message lives on. His mantra of, “We get to” helps build positivity

with a focus on gratitude in everyday life. His mentality of “strong mind, strong body” continues to emphasize the importance

of a positive mindset and a healthy approach to living for everyone in the Connetquot and Sachem school communities.

The Connetquot High School girls volleyball team faced off against Sachem High School North during their annual Dezy Strong match. Through concessions, contests and a raffle, the event raised $1,500 for the Dezy Strong Foundation. Matthew “Dezy” DiStefano was a Sachem High School North alumni, teacher and coach whose family lives in the Connetquot Central School District. In February 2018, Dezy was diagnosed with stage four kidney cancer. Since that time, he dedicated himself to conquering the disease, while at the same time, creating the Dezy Strong Foundation to help support others affected by cancer. In fall 2019, the Connetquot girls volleyball team held their first Dezy Strong match in support. The Dezy Strong match has become an annual tradition to help

The Connetquot school community came together to celebrate and educate one another on health and wellness during the district’s annual Community Wellness Day. This year’s event boasted 29 vendor tables, all focusing on different ways to be healthy. It was a great turn out with 21 student

volunteers and more than 375 students and their families in attendance. The day was filled with activities and exercise for kids, including making mini sand art and mindfulness jars. The event also included a family wellness workshop, yoga classes, mindfulness workshops and painting classes. Molloy College’s

mobile health van provided blood pressure checks and raffles and prizes were offered through many generous donations. The Mental Health Advisory Council brought the event to the Connetquot school community, and the Connetquot Public Library kindly offered a space to host the event.

WWII Veteran Warren James Turns 100

Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr., retired US Navy Captain and Chairman of Islip Town Veterans’ Advisory Board, recently met with our Town’s newest centenarian, World War II Veteran, Warren James, to congratulate him on his milestone 100th birthday. Born in 1923, Warren enlisted to serve in the United States Coast Guard in December of 1941, and would serve on the USS Mistletoe (WAGL237) coastal buoy tender stationed in the Hampton Roads area. After receiving transfer to the USS Eugene (PF-40) Tacoma class frigate, he entered the Pacific Theater aboard the

ship that would later earn two World War II battle stars. While transporting wounded from the battle of the Philippines, the USS Eugene caught fire, but was saved along with its occupants by the dedicated efforts of the crew in which Warren served. Transferred once more to the USS Lansing (DE-388), he would continue to serve with dedication through to the remainder of World War II. “Warren James belongs to that special group in our Nation’s history,” said Islip Councilman John C. Cochrane Jr. “Part of the greatest generation, his efforts during the

War contributed to the protection of the Pacific that helped save lives and enable the U.S. and Allied Forces to emerge victorious. We wish him nothing but peace and happiness on this milestone birthday achievement,” the councilman added. After the war, Mr. James returned to Long Island and worked for the Fair Harbor Ferry Company, serving as a dock hand and captain. His love for the ocean led him to move to Lonelyville on Fire Island, where he would further serve his community as both Water Commissioner and Fire Commissioner. Happy Birthday, Warren James!

The Bayport-Blue Point School District is pleased to announce Helene Gaissert as the district’s Employee of the Year. The honor was announced during a recent board of education meeting held at Bayport-Blue Point High School. Ms. Gaissert was a teacher’s assistant at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School, working with the district for 20 years. She officially retired as of July 1, but continues in a temporary role with the district to help with the transition. She was selected as the recipient of the 2022-2023

employee of the year award based on a committee selection of almost 20 nominees from various employee units. In an excerpt from one of her many nominations, one nominee stated, “Helene is not only an amazing colleague but truly an exceptional human. Helene is always there for everyone here at Sylvan both as the tech expert as well as a kind and compassionate friend. She truly cares about the students and staff and often can be seen quietly making a huge difference in the students’ and staff’s lives. Helene is generous,

humorous, intelligent but most of all, humble. She is exceptionally talented at helping solve any tech issues particularly when in a stressful time frame crunch, and at the same time, is a master at helping to soothe our stressed souls. I feel privileged and blessed to have the opportunity to get to work with Helene every day. She is truly deserving of the recognition of Employee of the Year.” The Bayport-Blue Point School District is proud to present this well-deserved award to Ms. Gaissert and thanks her for her many years of dedication.

Despite the damp weather, school spirit filled the air on Oct. 7, as the Bellport High School Clippers celebrated homecoming with a football game that brought the community together. The celebrations kicked off during the week of

Oct. 2 with theme days. High school students participated in a float contest where they constructed colorful, decade-themed floats that were on display during the football game. The Class of 2025 took first place with their 1980s float.

Cheers rang out for the Clippers as they took on and defeated Copiague with a final score of 47-12. The game also featured a halftime performance by the varsity cheerleaders and the crowning of the homecoming kings and queens.
