Long Island’s largest food drive event, the 9th Annual Bethpage Turkey Drive to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank, will take place on Friday, November 17th, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Donations can be dropped off at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters located at 899 South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage. Long Islanders are

asked to drop off frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items (except those in glass containers), supermarket gift cards, or cash donations. These donations will go directly to Island Harvest Food Bank, which will then help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network

of over 550 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island. “Over the past month, we have seen the great generosity of Long Islanders as thousands helped support people in need across our country and the Caribbean,” said Linda Armyn, Senior

Of Foliage and Fuzzy Friends For as long as I can remember, I’ve always wanted a “furry” pet of some kind, be it a puppy, kitten, bunny, even a guinea pig. Of course, once I moved into my own apartment and realized that such fuzzy companions require far more attention than I, as a full-time member of the workforce, can provide, I settled for my beloved little Buddy the Betta - and, following his passing, my new baby Betta, Norton von Spudly. Not exactly furry, but still fairly entertaining and interactive as fish go. Perhaps I should mention that, in the apartment complex where I reside, one tends to come across all sorts of creatures, from stray cats and kittens wandering the property, to turtles and fish by the pond, robins and blue jays and other assorted winged folk, and even the occasional baby fox roaming near the dumpster. And squirrels. We can’t forget our bushy-tailed friends who spend the majority of the seasons scurrying from tree to tree in search of acorns to munch on and, once the weather begins to turn chilly, store away for winter. My particular building is fairly set apart from the trees and shrubbery which line some of the other, more shaded areas of the complex; however,

as luck would have it, there happens to be one fairly large tree right in front of my apartment, with branches that - until recently - stretched nearly to my second-floor balcony. Every autumn, like clockwork, I would find hordes of acorns - piles, literally - on my deck each morning. Curious how they all happened to “fall” in this one area, I observed one particular squirrel as he made the rounds from branch to branch, fervently shaking each one until he had dislodged each and every nut. Some would fall down below, where he would eagerly gather them and begin digging holes to store them away; the rest, apparently, seemed to settle among my plants upstairs. Each day, I would sweep the acorns off the side of the deck and, peering over the railing, would see my little fuzzy visitor eagerly waiting to collect them. It became something of a routine, and I was only too happy to help him in his pursuit (and clear off my deck in the process). One morning, I awoke to the sound of buzzing and looked outside to see the landscape company trimming many of the trees and shrubs in the area, including “my” tree. Horrified, I looked at the now nearly-barren branches and wondered what had

become of my little fluffy-tailed companion. Was he swept away with the pile of discarded branches? Had he been permanently displaced from his chosen home? What had become of all the acorns he had yet to gather? Mildly concerned, I wondered if I would ever see him again. A few days passed, with still no sign. The next night, when I returned home from work, I decided to dine outside. It was one of those late Autumn evenings when the air was still mild and the sun had yet to set, casting a golden glow over all that the light touched. As I ate, I was startled by the sound of scurrying, and looked up to see my little fuzzy friend scampering up and down the emaciated tree, picking up the acorns that had fallen and galloping down the pathway to bury them in the tiny hole he had dug. I smiled, glad to see he was alright, despite his slightly-mangled home. Not quite a puppy, but a member of the adopted family nonetheless. A few weeks later, it seemed the acorns had all been accounted for. As I watered my mum plants, I saw something wedged between the flowers. Curious, I peered between the stems to find a single peanut shell. I guess this means he’s moving in for the winter.

Often, I stand at my favorite beach Send my thoughts till the horizon they reach To countries I missed and never have seen To other oceans where I never have been. I send elated kisses out to the entire universe My convictions in my mind I do rehearse I am grateful for what I am given now and here Peace engulfs me as I walk briskly on the pier.

Kicks for Cancer During the event, attendees enhanced their soccer skills and learned from the high school players new techniques, all while helping others in need. Kicks for Cancer is a program that began in Hauppauge, New York in 2008 in an effort to support Courtney Tomkin,

a student who had been diagnosed with brain cancer. The event has grown exponentially in Suffolk County as soccer teams across the county have signed on to raise money for various cancer organizations on the local and national level.

Skyping with the Chef Inspiration was on the menu for students of Tiffany Ambrico-Wilson’s World at Work class at Sachem High School East as they participated in a Skype call with Ina Garten, American author and host of the Food Network program, “Barefoot Contessa.” The World at Work class helps transition special education students from high school to life after graduation, focusing on life skills such as cleaning, cooking, shopping and managing finances. Students get a chance

to practice these skills as the class partakes in weekly grocery store trips. They are also given the opportunity to work with a job coach twice a week building the skills necessary toward gaining employment. Ina provided the students an inside look into her preparation process, from selecting a recipe to utilizing her home garden or purchasing ingredients at her local grocery store. She then cooked an Italian dish, polenta, and a class favorite treat, chocolate chip cookies. Additionally,

she spoke to the students about how she became a successful chef, reflecting on her inspirations growing up and the steps she took to teach herself how to cook. Throughout the videoconference, Ina reiterated the importance of having passion in anything the students choose to do in life. “Being able to have this experience with Ina adds to what we try to do every day,” said Ambrico-Wilson. “Find what you love to do and do it.”

The Special Career Education students in Lauren Daquet’s Food Prep class at the Gary D. Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) recently made slime. This served as a great first lesson for students since it required them to follow a recipe and measure ingredients, and also provided them

with a finished product that works as a sensory activator. BTC is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides a range of educational services, including Special Career Education classes that teach entry-level, industry skills to students with special needs. “This fun project met

several goals,” explained Ms. Daquet. “These students are new to the kitchen and needed to put basic skills into practice. The slime they created was extra tactile due to the beads that were added while mixing. When done, their slime could also be used as a stress ball at the end of the day.”

The Bayport-Blue Point school community recently came together to help support those individuals and communities who were affected by Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas. Both Blue Point and Sylvan Avenue elementary schools took part in programs which will benefit students affected in Houston. The joint effort focused on collecting essential school supplies for students, includes glue sticks, boxed crayons, loose leaf paper and personal hygiene products. In association with the Where to Turn

Organization, Sylvan Avenue Elementary “adopted” Salyers Elementary School, located just outside of Houston, Texas. As part of this outreach, Sylvan has committed to assisting 100 families with their generous donations. Fifth-grade students at Blue Point Elementary School also collected school supplies to help set up students with the tools needed to return to school. They also adopted the motto “We Choose Kind” as a source of motivation throughout the school year. After applying to Adopt-

A-Classroom, a program created to assist schools affected by Hurricane Harvey, the fifth-grade classes soon after learned that they were matched with a fifth-grade teacher at John and Shamarion Barber Middle School in Dickinson, Texas. Additionally, staff throughout all district elementary buildings participated in a Denim Donation fundraiser, in which they collected denim-clothing items to be sent to the hurricane victims.

Assisting Victims coordinated efforts to provide material assistance to those severely affected by this natural disaster. To date, their efforts have included collecting such items as water, first aid supplies, and diapers as well as organizing fundraisers in an effort to provide humanitarian assistance. “Through the guidance of the organizations, we will be delivering supplies to their designated donation site in Central Islip with the aid of our Connetquot Grounds staff,” said FLHS adviser Adriana DeFelice.

“Collections will, in turn, be securely flown to Puerto Rico and distributed to churches and nonprofit organizations throughout the island.” While every single donation to this relief effort is appreciated, special thanks are extended to SUNation CEO Scott Maskin for his group’s donation of more than $1,000 worth of supplies, and Connetquot Teachers Association who donated another $500 worth of relief supplies.

The Connetquot Central School District is pleased to announce Margaret Ronai as the new district director of business and social studies. Mrs. Ronai started her professional career in the classroom, serving as a social studies teacher for more than nine years before taking her first administrative role as a supervisor of social studies grades K-12 for two years in West Orange, New Jersey. Most recently, she has been working as a professor at the College of Saint Rose in Albany and has more than 14 years of

administrative experience, having worked as both a principal and vice principal at two Long Island schools. Throughout her administrative work, Mrs. Ronai established and supported sixthgrade teaming to enhance interdisciplinary learning and ease the transition of elementary students to middle school. She also initiated a sixth-grade advisory program that implemented a tablet program for sixth-graders to enhance career and college readiness skills. In addition to her administrative positions,

Mrs. Ronai has both garnished and contributed toward a number of prestigious awards, including, but not limited to the Lynbrook Village Youth Character Award, Lynbrook South Middle School being named a U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award and the New Jersey State Department of Education Best Practices Star Schools Program Award. Mrs. Ronai has also contributed greatly toward furthering collaborative community efforts, as she fostered schoolcommunity relations by visiting elementary schools, creating a “buddy program,” and creating professional learning opportunities for staff. Mrs. Ronai holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Stonehill College, and a Master of Science in social studies education from Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus. She is also a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, along with the School Administrators Association of New York State. Jamie Burks, daughter of Donna Burks of Lindenhurst, graduated from Western Suffolk BOCES School of Practical Nursing, where she was inducted into the National Association of Licensed Practical Nurses Honor Society. Working with the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Day Parade, Inc. and Ana Caraballo Gonzalez, the program director of La Fiesta (WBON) Radio Station in Ronkonkoma, the honor society

Getting Energized In an effort to share best practices of conserving the energy utilized on a daily basis, students at Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary and Idle Hour elementary schools were recently treated to a production of “The Energized Guyz” by PSEG Long Island and the National Theatre for Children. Carley and J.P., professional actors

with the NTC, put on a spectacular performance for the students as they transformed into colorful characters such as “Nikki Neutron” and “Bert the Dirt Expert,” each with their own important message about the best ways to conserve energy and reduce pollution. Additionally, students were taught the scientific composition of energy, its multiple uses and how to avoid the most common

wastes of energy. “The program provides an opportunity to see education brought to life,” said George Coburn, customer experience manager/community outreach for PSEG Long Island. “It’s really important that we educate and help children and their families understand the importance of our natural resources and using energy wisely.”

Junior Commissioners Welcomed A new group of high school volunteers was inducted into the annual Keep Islip Clean Junior Commissioner program during a recent ceremony at historic Brookwood Hall in East Islip. Junior Commissioners are civic minded high school students chosen by principals and school advisers from districts throughout the Town of Islip and nominated to the elite program. This year, forty Junior Commissioners representing ten school districts will work on litter cleanup, beautification, recycling and educational activities designed to

further the KIC ideal of a clean, green community. Guests who shared in the ceremony included Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter, who swore the Junior Commissioners into the program. KIC’s First Vice Chairman Nancy Donohue and Matthew Teich, who graduated from the Junior Commissioner program two years ago, were the featured speakers. Kay Erwood, KIC’s Chairman and one of the community leaders who helped found KIC in 1989, encouraged the young volunteers to make a positive difference in our shared community. “The idealism and

enthusiasm that Junior Commissioners bring to KIC initiatives are truly inspiring. They are a great example of how much can be accomplished by young people who care about the environment,” said Nancy Cochran, Executive Director of KIC. Keep Islip Clean is a not-for-profit affiliate of the national organization, Keep America Beautiful. Dedicated volunteers like the Junior Commissioners work on numerous community enhancement projects and programs throughout the twentyfour hamlets of Islip.

Genetics Conference Students and staff from several Long Island districts gathered in the Sachem Central School District’s High School North auditorium for a lecture on groundbreaking cancer genetics research topics by Indiana University professor Dr. Sam Rhine. The college-style lecture covered multiple areas

of the genetics scientific discipline, spanning from causes of different forms of cancer to the possibilities of correcting genetic diseases. Dr. Rhine also spoke to students and educators about ongoing organ transplant research involving pigs and promising new research with the capabilities to

edit genomes known as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats. Students and staff were encouraged to ask questions throughout the lecture, and educators were provided with information to perform their own inclass genetic experiments

On Friday, October 13th Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connequot Teachers Association (CTA), hosted a ‘Welcome Back’ Dinner Reception for new teachers, as well as over 100 veteran teachers. Lombardi’s on the Bay was the venue for this year’s event, as veterans welcomed their new colleagues who will be teaching in the district’s 10 school buildings.

Felicio welcomed the new and returning teachers saying, “It is a pleasure welcoming our newest teachers to the Connetquot Teacher Association family. They are joining an elite group of educators. They are now part of the foundation that makes the Connetquot schools what they are, which is the bedrock that makes Connetquot the great community that it is.

Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School celebrated the musical talents of multiple students during the seventh annual Tri-M Music Honor Society Induction ceremony on October 12th. The Tri-M Music Honor Society highlights studentmusicians of outstanding

academic accomplishment, with a focus on community and school service. The candidates are selected based on robust music participation, at least a B average grade or equivalent in music classes and a strong sense of character. Tri-M Honor Society adviser Melissa Johnson was proud to name the

21 new members, as well as recognize the 17 continuing members of the OBMS Tri-M Honor Society. A reception was held in the cafeteria following the ceremony for the inductees, their families, staff and friends.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School’s fifth-grade students recently took audiences “under the big top” as they showcased their newly acquired circus skills during their “Cirque du

Jour” circus performance. Prior to the big performance, the fifthgraders worked for two weeks in physical education classes to learn the special circus skills required to entertain their fans, including clown

humor, juggling and stilt walking. The “Cirque Du Jour” program is designed to motivate students to participate in physical education and cultural arts activities.

MUSEUM OPENS - On October 15th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Neil Foley were on-hand for the ribbon cutting at the grand opening of the Greater Patchogue Historical Society Museum. The museum is located on the lower level of the Carnegie Library on Main Street in Patchogue Village. The historic building was constructed in 1902 and was recently restored. The museum contains historic photos and other artifacts that chronical the history of the Greater Patchogue community.

A Confirmation Service Project was recently completed and presented to Sgt. Major Fortenberry from Fort Drum, NY at the AMVET Post 76 in Bay Shore. The boys collected socks, foot powder, gel shoe inserts, books, DVDs, basketballs, footballs and soccer balls. Gold Star mom Dawn Esposito promised her son she would remember his Infantry unit and gave the

boys this wonderful task to complete. The boys are from Good Shepherd RC Church in Holbrook. The religion teacher attends Our Lady of Lourdes in West Islip. Hundreds of items and notes of appreciation for our military serving around the world were collected from the folks at Our Lady of Lordes and the surrounding area. Many residents of Maria Regina Nursing Home

in Brentwood also wrote beautiful notes, as well as residents of Sonrise Assisted Living in Holbrook and a children care center. The folks at Our Lady of Lourdes also contributed cash donations, which were used to purchase an Air Hockey Table sent directly to Lt. Colonel Wence at Fort Drum. In a program that was organized by Connetquot High School Foreign Language Honor Society (FLHS) Advisors Cheryl Sosa, Eileen MGinnis and Adriana DeFelice, the CTA President dropped off more than $500 worth of badly needed supplies on October 11th to help our friends on the island of Puerto Rico.

Felicio said that, “The Connetquot Teachers Association is proud to support our students and teachers with their effort to help the people of Puerto Rico. The Association hopes that our contribution can help make a difference for families struggling to survive during the long recovery process, caused by the horrific storms.” Currently, despite assistance from the U.S. government, and from around the world, people are suffering from a lack of simple necessities such as clean water, electricity, canned food and simple communication

availability. The FLHS posted fliers around the high school and made daily announcements asking students to help in whatever way they could. Ronkonkoma, and Oakdale-Bohemia, Middle Schools also joined the effort to help our friends to the south. Calls went out for sunscreen, wipes, cases of water, feminine products, bug spray, first aid supplies, diapers, baby food and formula. Fire Prevention Demo Fire safety took precedence at the Sachem Central School District’s Lynwood Elementary School as students participated in fire prevention-week activities this October, including an informative assembly presented by members of the Farmingville Fire Department. During the assembly, students enjoyed multiple demonstrations by the firefighters, learned
