Huntington Youth Bureau Suffolk County Legislators Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills), Tom Donnelly (D-South Huntington) and William R. Spencer (D-Centerport) presented a proclamation to the Huntington Youth Bureau in recognition of their 50th Anniversary. The Huntington Youth Bureau’s primary goals are the creation, promotion and implementation of programs and services, which stress youth development and meet the expressed and demonstrated needs of youth and their families in the Town of Huntington. “I want to congratulate

the Huntington Youth Bureau for 50 years of service to the Town of Huntington,” said Legislator Berland. “As the ‘MC’ for the Huntington Youth Writes competition for 16 years, I saw firsthand the benefits that the program has had on Huntington’s youth, and this is only one of many excellent programs provided by the Huntington Youth Bureau.” “I want to commend the Huntington Youth Bureau for its 50 years of service to the residents of Huntington,” Legislator Tom Donnelly said. “The bureau has taken on and

In celebration of Fire Prevention Week, South Country’s Verne W. Critz Elementary School students in grades K-2 visited the Hagerman Fire Department where they met with firefighter Joe Cuccia and members of the department who spoke

about fire prevention and safety. “Fire prevention is every day,” firefighter Joe said. “We hope when all of you grow up, some of you will want to be firefighters too.” The program stressed the importance of knowing how to dial 911 in an

emergency, the use of smoke detectors and safety in the kitchen. The students also sprayed a fire hose, sat in a South Country ambulance, explored a fire truck and executed an escape from the Fire Safe trailer.

The Connetquot Central School District celebrated a number of student accomplishments during the board of education meeting held on October 9th, in the Barney Stejskal Board Room. To begin the night’s recognitions, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda G. Adams introduced Connetquot Public Library teen librarian Angela Breslin to speak of the accomplishments of Connetquot’s representing team, “The Book Hunters.” Mrs. Breslin informed the community that the team finished first overall at the August 11th Suffolk

County Battle of the Books countywide reading program competition. The competing students spanned grades six through nine and were expected to read eight prechosen books in order to participate. In a stunning display of athleticism, Ronkonkoma Middle School seventhgrade student Chase Zere recently took first place at the Metropolitan Junior PGA Championship at The Millbrook Country Club held in Greenwich, Connecticut. Although only in the seventh grade, Chase is on the Connetquot varsity golf team along with his

brother Tyler (11th grade) and Kyle (12th grade), both of whom are also Junior PGA Tour Players. Connetquot High School senior Victor Barsotti was recognized for being declared a ScholarArtist by the Long Island Arts Alliance due to his commitment to the arts and academics. Each year, the Long Island Scholar Artist program, sponsored by the Long Island Arts Alliance, recognizes students who excel academically and in the areas of music, visual arts, dance, theater or media arts.

Conversations with Masters This week I’m turning my column over to some of the Masters I have been priviledged enough to interview. Below are a few eye-opening quotes gleaned from my past interviews. Take 2 Simple Steps To Help Protect Your Family

(NAPSI)—Many people may not realize that it only takes two minutes for a house to be engulfed in ﬂames. The American Red Cross and its Home Fire Campaign partners are asking everyone across the country to take the following two simple steps to help decrease the risk of home fires and save lives: 1. Create and practice your 2-minute drill. Have at least two ways to escape from every room. Select an outside meeting spot at a safe distance

Testing Their Knowledge Students of all grade levels from Edith L. Slocum Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District put their knowledge to the test on September 26th, during an engaging game show, “Brain Challenge,” as presented by Hollyrock Entertainment. An enthusiastic emcee and his assistant worked with the students, who

were divided into two competitive teams, and accompanied by their teachers who assumed the role of team captains. The emcee used a timer to challenge the students to recognize their numbers, letters, gradelevel history, math and spelling questions. They were also challenged to demonstrate their ability to dance, use a hula hoop,

and test their strength in a tug-of-war competition. The highly engaged participants, along with their teachers, were challenged both physically and mentally, and came away from this hour-long game show competition with a higher feeling of comradery amongst their peers.

Kyle Richards’ Hollywood Upbringing and Booming TV Career By Allison Kugel

Real Housewife of Beverly Hills, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton Rothschild’s aunt; Kyle Richards has emerged as a Hollywood force. She is the breakout star of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, now in its ninth season, and Executive Producer of the new hit television series, American Woman, loosely based on the colorful life of her late mother, Kathleen Richards. Allison Kugel: Your new television show, American Woman, is inspired by your mom’s life. What is the greatest lesson your mom taught you? Kyle Richards: She would always tell me, “If you want something, put it out there and you’ll make it happen.” She would tell me that you have to plant the seeds. When you’re a kid you don’t really understand what that means. Now I realize that everything I was doing my whole life was planting the seeds for what I’m doing now. She told me I could do anything I wanted to if I set my mind to it, and to never take my eye off the ball. Allison Kugel: If she were still here, what do you think she would say about your new show, American Woman, and how she’s portrayed?

Allison Kugel: If you could go back in time, would you choose to be a child actor again? Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I had a

Allison Kugel: You had an unconventional upbringing, as is reflected on this show. What kind of impact did your childhood experience have on what you looked for in a husband and family as an adult? Kyle Richards: I grew up in a house filled with women. My mom, my grandmother, my sisters, my mom’s friends… and my sister Kathy had these two best friends that basically lived at our house. It was like a big sorority house. There was a lot of fun in our house, but then I would go to my friends’ houses and I would see the dad coming home from work and the mom making dinner in the kitchen. I thought, “Oh, those are like the people on TV. Those are fake people.” But I always really admired that, and it was something that I always wanted to have. Allison Kugel: Did you have input into the casting of Alicia Silverstone, who plays the character inspired by your mom?

Kyle Richards: Absolutely. I was involved with every aspect of the show. When I originally met with Alicia, my thought was that the actress we cast had to be a natural redhead. My mom was a redhead and it was a big part of her personality. Alicia loved the script and I thought, “Okay, we’ll have a meeting,” because I love Alicia Silverstone! Who doesn’t love Alicia Silverstone? The second I met her, and I saw how inspired she was to dive into this role, or as Alicia describes it, “this juicy part,” I really felt she was the person to take on the challenge of portraying my mom. Allison Kugel: What was your motivation for signing onto The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills in 2010? What did you hope would come from it?

Kyle Richards: [American Woman] was not the goal (laughs). I didn’t realize what the Housewives [franchise] really was when I started doing it. I didn’t understand the opportunities that would come my way. I was acting my whole life, and then I had pretty much stepped aside from that to raise my children. When The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills came up, I looked at it as just another gig. I didn’t know what it was like to do a reality television show, other than seeing my niece Paris [Hilton] do it. I thought, “This is great because it’s reality and my kids can be with me.” I had no game plan at all.

Kyle Richards: In American Woman, they show her working at The May Company, and with that part the writers took creative license. My mom was our manager growing up, because we were all acting in television. She was a single mom raising us. All of a sudden, she found herself in this big house with no husband. Even though we had this nice house in Bel Air, my mom was very strict. We had to make our own beds. When we got cars we were not allowed to go to the car wash, we each had to wash our own car. My kids now go and get their nails done. I wasn’t allowed to get my nails done. I did my own nails.

Allison Kugel: You’d been working in television since childhood, so it made sense to go back to what you knew.

Allison Kugel: I think that part is a generational thing, because I didn’t get my first manicure and pedicure until I was in college.

Kyle Richards: I’ve been doing television since before I could even read. American Woman happened through a fan. My friend came to me and said, “I have these fans of yours who would love to meet you. Would you mind doing lunch?” I agreed because he’s a very close friend of mine. They happened to be the producers of Shameless (on Showtime). At lunch they started asking me what my plans were for after Housewives. I told them I like to write, particularly about having an unconventional upbringing, and I began sharing some stories with them. Then I got a phone call that John Wells (American Woman’s Executive Producer) wanted to make my mom’s story into a television show.

Kyle Richards: Me either. A massage? Are you kidding me? I never had a massage until I was married.

Allison Kugel: What parts of Alicia Silverstone’s portrayal of your mom

Allison Kugel: Do you find it a challenge to keep your kids grounded in Beverly Hills? Kyle Richards: It is a challenge, and the way I deal with that is through having open conversations. I don’t want to be a broken record with my kids because then they’ll stop listening, but I kind of am sometimes. My husband and I always talk about this. When we were first married we were in a very different position. My oldest would say, “When are we going to get a house?,” because we were in a condo. I would explain that we have to make money and save up, and we have to have an extra cushion in the bank. So she would say, “How many cushions do we need?”

Allison Kugel: American Woman takes place in the 1970s, just as the seeds of feminism were starting to take root. It seems that your mom was ahead of her time, in terms of being a feminist more than forty years ago. Kyle Richards: It’s funny you should say that, because my mom did not like the word “feminist.” It had such a negative connotation at the time. Back then, women weren’t supposed to be strong and outspoken. Nowadays it’s somewhat celebrated as empowering for women to be strong. I hope younger women, including my daughters, will see how far we have come and appreciate who they are and the power they have. In my mother’s generation, that was lost. very positive experience as a child actor. I worked with incredible people. A lot of the things I did were in a very family-friendly environment. I got to travel and do exciting things I never would have been able to do if I were a regular child (laughs) living a normal life. I grew up in Bel Air, but obviously my friends weren’t actors. They went to school every day, they went to camp, and did all of those normal things. I didn’t get to do those things, but I was doing other interesting things and traveling. When we filmed Little House on the Prairie, we were filming out in Simi Valley and riding horses and playing in the streams and catching ducks. It was just like going to camp sometimes.

The Connetquot Central School District is proud to announce that three Connetquot High School student-musicians have been selected to take part in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s Showcase A Cappella

ensemble being held at Northport High School on October 27th. The district congratulates students Robert Alvarado (bass), Jake Peralta (bass) and Gabby Perticone (alto). In order to be selected

for the showcase, the students auditioned at Centereach High School, singing a 30-second solo of their choosing. They were ultimately chosen by a panel of four Long Island music teachers based on their auditions.

Suffolk Land Acquisition On Tuesday, October 2nd, the Suffolk County Legislature voted to approve Procedural Motion 13, which authorizes the County Division of Real Property to make an offer to purchase four parcels of land off of Whiskey Road in Middle Island owned by Stone Point

Group, LLC, for open space acquisition. Legislator Anker moved forward the acquisition process in an effort to preserve this environmentally sensitive property. The preservation efforts are supported by local community members, environmental groups, and the Middle Island

Bayport-Blue Point Fitness Center The Bayport-Blue Point High School recently unveiled the completed Bob Venero Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art fitness training facility which grants students access to dozens of cardio fitness tools such as exercise bikes, rowing machines and medicine balls in an effort to improve and maintain optimal physical health. In tandem with the newly renovated center, the students are now able to enjoy a spin class, taught by Bayport-Blue Point High School physical education teacher Tricia Livingston. Using the

numerous available exercise bicycles, the students’ workouts are accompanied by a giant projector wall simulating cycling in the outdoors, along with an impressive sound system. “The Bayport-Blue Point School District is extremely grateful for the remarkable donation afforded to us by Mr. and Mrs. Bob Venero,” said District Director of Physical Education, Health & Interscholastic Sports Timothy Mullins. “This contribution has morphed our Fitness Center into one of the most state-of-the-art facilities within a public-

school setting. The new equipment has already positively impacted hundreds of students and athletes. Not only has this helped better prepare our athletes for competition, this upgraded venue has also transformed our physical education curriculum in a positive manner. taken a strong lead in acquiring and protecting environmentally sensitive properties to protect our natural ecosystems and our vulnerable groundwater aquifer,” stated Legislator Sarah Anker. The County will now send an offer letter to the owners of the property, who will

have 60 days to respond. If the owner accepts the offer, the County will go into contract and prepare an Environmental Site Assessment to determine if site remediation must occur before the County can close on the sale. The purchase will undergo a review by the Council on

The Bayport-Blue Point School District would like to congratulate Bayport-Blue Point High School science teacher Krista Peterson for being recently selected as one of 275 additional teachers throughout the state to participate in Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s New York State Master Teacher Program. The NYS Master Teacher Program is a network of K-12 STEM teachers throughout

robust application process involving an intensive written application, personal essay, multiple recommendations, an in-person interview, a writing sample and a demonstration lesson.
